At N.E.W.T. level, Jake had no manner in which he could give his students an easy lesson. The topics would slowly grow harder to pick out those who were really good at his subject, and award them for it, or show those who weren't quite so capable that a job in this field was perhaps not for them.

Today was just as hard as the last lesson, and despite the Christmas break, Jake was still pushing them to achieve. Not to be mean, but because he was quite sure his students were very capable individuals.

The room was once more devoid of seats because they weren't necessary, and on the board behind him two words were already written in his handwriting.

Spell Resistance.

There were many and more forms of this, but Jake was going to look at a few in the hope his students would be better equipped in the wider world. Checking his watch, Jake looked to the door, wondering how many students were going to turn up today.

After something of a disaster in the first lesson on Victoria's behalf, the witch had gone away and researched more in to Patronuses. Some people simply couldn't cast them, others could only cast them after something big happened to them, some could do them on their first go, and some people took a lot of practice. There was no way of knowing which category you fell in to, and Victoria had done her best not to feel too deflated with this notion.

But Allegra, being the sweet witch she was, had simply pointed out that it didn't stop Victoria being one of the brightest witches she knew.

Victoria had been blushing at that point, and the memory made her blush a little now. But she pushed it away as she entered her brother's classroom. Instead, a smile flourished on her features as she moved to the side and put down her bag. "Hi Jake!" She greeted her brother with a smile, looking to the board. A good topic indeed, interesting, challenging. "I'm looking forward to this." Victoria told her brother, motioning to the board behind him.

After the recap on Patronuses last lesson, Josh had noted that the Defence Against the Dark Arts grade was going to be a relatively easy one. He hadn't been surprised of being capable, he'd learnt the skill a while ago as a way of sending messages to servants when he didn't wish to see their faces. His mother and father had fielded the Ministry inquiries of underage magic, though the Minister had only been half-hearted in his attempts.

He wasn't overly fond of the professor, but then Josh was never overly fond of anyone. But he'd decided to keep turning up despite seemingly not needing to.

Pushing the door open, Josh moved across the room and put his bag down, leaning against the wall and taking in the two people already there. No one of interest. His eyes turned towards the door, wondering idly who else might be joining them for the lesson today.

Louise followed the other students into the defence classroom and smiled seeing there were no seats again, good she was starting to appreciate more practical lessons. She'd done a little practice on the patronus charm since last lesson but could still only cast a shield form. Better than the wisp she'd produced the first time at least but she still wanted to improve.

She looked at the board and wondered what that could mean. Defensive shields or just simply tolerating spells being thrown at you, she hoped for the former, the latter sounded painful. As she made her way further into the room she spotted Josh looking at her or rather the door but not wanting to seem impolite she smiled and gave a small wave before finding a place to stand. She could see Victoria here too and gave the girl a little more friendly greeting, not vocalised but still a greeting none the less.

With the class seeming to get as full as it was likely to, Jake decided to move on now. Smiling to those who had turned up, the professor looked around the room at the familiar faces. "Good morning everyone." Jake acknowledged to the trio there, his smile falling in to place quite easily in that moment.

"Now, for the observant among us, you have probably noted that we are going to be looking at Spell Resistance. You may have covered it without really realising in the past, but today it will become more apparent." Jake explained a little vaguely, but it was purposeful.

"Now, can anyone tell me anything about the idea of Spell Resistance? Try to keep it to one point each so that everyone gets a chance." Jake asked, looking between his students expectantly. It would be better this way, so that then he could work out what he had to work with in this instance.

As the door opened once more and Louise entered, offering him a small greeting, Josh looked away. He didn't much take to acknowledging others, mostly because he didn't really want to. Turning his attention back to the front of the room, Josh waited for a few more minutes before the professor spoke of what they were going to be doing.

Josh remained quiet after the question, wondering if one of the others was going to field an answer, but when none came, he softly cleared his throat before speaking.

"Spell resistance comes in many forms. You can resist a spell through a magical shield, or defence. You can use a non-magical defence such as ducking out of the way of spells. Or, I would suspect this lesson will cover the last, you have the mind control to resist a spell. The most common example would be Occlumency." Josh supplied, his tone disinterested in the whole thing.

Josh's answer was a well rounded one, and Jake found himself nodding with each point because the answer was a very well rounded one. As the boy finished with a correct guess as to what the subject they were going to be looking at was given, Jake nodded happily.

"Correct, Josh, take five points for Slytherin." Jake told the boy with a smile before he turned his attention to the group as a whole. "So today, as Josh correctly guessed, we will be looking at the use of Occlumency. Now, the art of Occlumency is relatively difficult, so please don't be disheartened if you don't get it on your first go. Practice is the best way to move forward."

Jake paused, giving the students a moment to collect their thoughts. "You will need to learn to clear you mind, and push the other person from your mind. You'll each come up one at a time and give it a go. You can try as many times as you like, too." Jake explained, summoning the bag of sweets he'd collected on his way in from Honeydukes. "There's some chocolate and sweets in the bag to give you a boost once you've tried because this spell is quite exhausting.

It was a good thing that Allegra ran regularily, so she was one of the fastest people she knew. But even that didn't help that she was late. So late. She'd been tending to her plants, one of them had been ill lately and needed special attention. So the girl had sacrificed punctuality in favour of registering medication to the poorly plant at ten minute intervals. Now perking up the plant seemed well enough for her to go, so without much effort she sped off to Defense where Victoria would no doubt be waiting.

Victoria. A smile flashed across the tall girls pretty features at the thought of her best friend. More than friend. They weren't officially, but, well, come on. They acted like they were married for Merlins sake. And when Vic was ready she'd say something. Until then Allegra was happy being with Victoria like this, as best friends. Though she wouldn't deny that she didn't mind the rumours surrounding them that kept others away from hitting on Victoria. Definitely didn't mind those.

"I'm so sorry, Jake," She said entering the room, "Herbo emergency." She explained briefly before moving over to Victoria and following the lesson, eager to pick up what she'd missed. Though defense was truly not her best or favorite subject, Allegra took it. Perhaps because of a certain brunette. Perhaps.

Jake waved away the apology from Allegra as she entered the room, he knew the witch would only be late if there was a very good reason. Turning back to the class as a whole, it didn't seem like anyone wanted to give this a go, so with a soft sigh, Jake amended his words, because he'd noted the time.

"Okay, we'll change things up seeing as we have run out of time. Anyone who wants to gain house points, please submit an essay to me on the pros and cons of Spell Resistance in any form. There are no limits, extra points will be given for creativity. Best of luck, until then, have fun with the rest of the week." Jake explained, waving them off because they were dismissed.

Class now closed.
