PostSubject: Potions: Lesson One - Herbicide Potion (All Years)   Potions: Lesson One - Herbicide Potion (All Years) EmptyWed Jan 04, 2017 1:40 pm

Another year, but not quite the same James. With Circe now four months pregnant, and showing quite prominently, he was relatively distracted. He wasn't sure at the moment how he felt about watching his girlfriend's stomach swell with the son's (James was sure it was going to be a boy) life. But he didn't mention it, too scared to upset Circe as he tried to explain himself.

Coming back to the school was a welcome relief, though, James would admit. This year, he could throw himself in to his teaching, and try to ignore the impending arrival of a child that was his own. Whilst James had wanted the baby, he was nervous about the child, so distractions were welcome.

Turning to the board, James wrote up two words, Herbicide Potion before turning back to his desk. He didn't take a seat, instead waiting for the students to come in so that he could begin the lesson he had in mind.

Following DADA, Potions was her second favourite subject; it just amazed her what sort of things you could make with the ingredients. It was fun and educating watching the different ingredients react with each other in Potions and while Prim didn't actually think that Potions was her forte she figured that it would be a good hobby to focus on apart from her photography.

Stepping into the classroom Primrose limped over to her desk a tight smile upon her lips. "Good morning Professor Balan." She said softly as she plopped down on her chair, her eyes instantly moving to the board to see what they would be doing that day.

Seeing the name of the Potion, Primrose got her book out and she leafed through it towards the correct page to where the potion was. It wasn't a hard Potion to make but it would take the whole lesson to make, that was for sure.

Potions was one of those subjects that Carlotta both loved and hated. She loved learning what sort of properties ingredients could produce, depending on how you mixed, heated and treated them. She also rather enjoyed making her own mixtures of things, and noting down what happened. Yes, that has gotten her into a bit of strife a few times, but she didn't shy away from it- she'd grown rather fond of it.

She walked into the classroom "Morning professor," she said brightly, taking a seat and taking note of the potion they'd be learning today. Herbicide Potion was relatively simple, if Carlotta remembered from her research- a nice way to settle into the year. While waiting for the other students to arrive, she decided to ready her work station, and to refresh her memory of the potion by looking through her book to see what ingredients she'd need.

Potions was, by far, the better class to attend for the simple fact Naomi didn't have to travel too far to get there. Add to that that the professor didn't really give too much thought to what you were doing, so long as you didn't mess around, it made for an easy class. Which was why Naomi was (relatively) early to the class.

Slipping through the door, Naomi took in those who were already there, and with little knowledge of those before her, she took a seat away from the other two girls. Naomi was quite popular, and she wasn't going to have her name brought down by two unknowns.

Looking to the board, the Slytherin witch took in the subject for the day and grumbled a little bit to herself. They were basically creating a gardening potion, how uninspiring could that be?

Eli felt that he might need to take this class a little bit more seriously than the others, if his sister's word meant anything (and it usually did). Apparently Professor Balan wasn't overly fond of, well a lot of things, he guessed. Alas! He wasn't wise, and he guessed that he'd crack sometime within the first lesson- purely unable to keep his hilarity under wraps.

He walked into the classroom, finding an available seat and setting himself up for the lesson. Upon finally looking at the board to see what potion he'd be doing that say, he found himself resisting the urge to say something along the lines of "Herbicide? But what did the plants ever do to you? You sick bastard", and acting shocked, hand over heart and anything. Jokingly of course. It was rare for him to mean any sort of insult. And for him, it was the hardest thing ever- holding back. Because apparently some people found it offensive to be called a sick bastard...

There were many things about potions that Emily didn't get on with. The first, that it was literally as far away from her room as it physically could be. The second, that she hadn't seen anyone's concoction explode in their face for about a year, now, and that didn't sit well with her either. The third, that the dungeons were always so horrendously cold, and while a simple warming charm would arguably do the trick, it was the principle of the fact that stopped her.

The fourth, she decided, crossing the room with a small, courteous nod to her professor, sitting alone away from the other students, was that she was immensely disinterested in Herbology for a number of reasons, and a Herbicide potion was the last thing she wanted to do.

Regardless of her internalised resentment for the subject in question, Emily took it upon herself to erase that mindset. Maybe it would be different - maybe it would be good. Enjoyable, perhaps, was a stretch - especially with such a lively group of classmates. But... well. She'd managed to sit through it before, she could just as well do it again.

The class was relatively small, but James remained undeterred by this fact. Those that had not bothered to attend were only hurting themselves, not him. As the polite hello's came, James simply nodded in return. He wasn't really the kind of professor for idle chit chat, but he'd at least acknowledged the children as they entered.

Waiting for his watch to announce the hour, James cleared his throat. Those who had been here before would know not to test his patience, but today James was not his normal self.

"Good morning, class." James greeted them all, somewhat out of character in the fact he'd actually said 'good' in that sentence. His voice was not soft, no, still the same tone as usual, but he'd used a word he would never normally use. "As you may have noticed, we will be producing the Herbicide Potion today. Now, who out of you can tell me what this is? Who might use it the most? And, for those who have actually bothered to read the textbook, tell me which ingredients are in the potion? Don't be shy." James instructed, taking up a piece of chalk and looking expectantly towards the students.

Today, they would do more than just make the potion. Today they would understand the potion.

Prim looked around the class and frowned slightly; there weren't many people in and she was quite sure that Professor Balan was going to be a bit annoyed though as he spoke up, she blinked her eyes at him and let out a quiet snort. No way in hell was he annoyed. He was probably not even bothered by it.

Listening to the Professor, Prim licked her lips as she flicked her eyes down to her textbook before she focused back on James. The pretty brunette straightened her back and slowly rose her hand before softly speaking up. "The Herbicide Potion is used to kill or damage plants Professor." The normally bubbly teenager said in a bit of a shy voice, ignoring the looks that were being aimed at her. She was only answering the question after all and she knew that James' hated people who just answered as if reciting the book word for word. "It's mostly used by Herbologists who want to kill off weeds or just general annoying plants."

Licking her lips, the Gryffindor fourth year was suddenly glad for her ability to retain what she read with clear clarity and that she actually liked Potions. Flushing darkly, she lowered her hand and slid down into her seat, hunching her shoulders and ignoring the other students. She rarely spoke up in class unless there was a friendly face in the countless students.

Lux stalked into the classroom, taking one glance at the blackboard and sighing. Looked like they were going to make a boring potion this time. At least it was considered relatively difficult to make, though Lux could not see what was so difficult about it. Completely ignoring the professor, as usual, she made her way to the back of the room, sinking into her seat and waiting as the other students arrived.

It wasn't long before the professor started speaking and Lux raised an eyebrow at his words. Was is just her or did the professor seem to be in a better mood than usual? Shrugging it off, she waited until the Gryffindor girl answered before speaking up. "A potion that murders plants, people who want to murder plants, Flobberworm mucus, Standard Ingredient, Lionfish Spine, Horklump juice," Lux replied in a bored tone, answering the three questions that were asked. Contrary to popular belief, Lux did care about her studies and usually read the textbook ahead of the class.

"Can we just get this thing started?"

As the first answer came, James could tell the witch had read ahead. Read ahead, but not learnt by heart - i.e. it came in the witch's own words, not textbook language. Turning to the board, James wrote up the points the witch had made, in note form, before turning back to the room. Waiting for the next answer.

The second answer was a full one. And James wrote down everything the witch had to say. At least it got the theory over with a little quicker than expecting each student to pick something out individually.

But the question made James grind his teeth a little, before turning around. "No, Miss Bailey, we can't 'just get this thing started', you need to know what you're doing. But, by all means, if you think you know everything there is to know - leave." James replied, no-nonsense as usual. He wouldn't keep anyone here that didn't wish to be.

"Now. For those of you that are here to listen. Today we will be making, and testing our potions on plants. The ingredients have been laid out in the store cupboard for you. Please go and collect your trays. Your potion is located on page two hundred and one. Take care to note which cauldron you're using when reading through the instructions. I will be walking around the class to check your progress. You will be graded.

"Begin." James told them, waving them off to get their stuff.
