PostSubject: Defence Against the Dark Arts - Lesson Two (All Years)   Sun Feb 05, 2017 4:37 pm

OOC: This thread takes place before the site plot.

With Christmas nearly here, Jake was very excited. Time with his family was a treasure, a treasure that he did not get to savour nearly enough. Work, however, was almost as important to Jake, and though he felt bad for leaving Veronika often, he could not not work in the Ministry. Or the school.

It was a part of him.

Jake's lesson plan had been done some time, and in the middle of the room sat a trunk. It rattled occasionally, but other than that, the room held no clues as to the subject of the lesson. Some students might guess, but it didn't matter if they could not. Sitting atop his desk, Jake sat watching the trunk that was the only other peice of furniture in the room. Waiting, patiently, for his students to arrive so they could have a highly practical lesson.

Oh, and of course, Jake had laid out a mixture of Santa hats and elf ears, chocolate beside each one, as a small Christmas treat for the whole room. Jake, personally, had a pair of antlers atop his head. He loved Christmas, and he was most certainly not going to pretend otherwise.

With Christmas nearly here, Nirek was looking forward to the time away from lessons. Though he did not celebrate the holiday, he was gifted with the free time. Caramarienne's birthday was the twenty-fifth, too, so Nirek had to get her both a Christmas present (for she did celebrate) and a birthday present. That, however would be the next trip to Hogsmeade.

Today, however, he was stuck with the fact he had to attend lessons. Descending the steps from the Gryffindor common room, Nirek slipped through the door and took in the trunk in the middle of the room, and then the festive hats. Smiling to himself, Nirek picked up a pair of elf ears, and the chocolate, before turning his attention back to the professor.

"Thanks for this, Jake." The younger male acknowledged the gift, opening the chocolate and devouring it whilst he waited for others to arrive.

DADA was literally Prim's favourite subject out of them all; there was not one lesson of DADA that she missed nor was there any piece of homework that she did not up to at least an EE standard. The subject was her passion and many people thought that she would either join the Auror force when she graduated or she would try to get a Mastery. In truth what Prim wanted was to graduate Hogwarts with O's in DADA, get a DADA Mastery and then join the Hit Wizard force.

Making her way into the classroom and with Max's wrist clamped in her hand she beamed at Jake. "Hey Jake, it suits you!" She waved her hand as she let go of Max's wrist and skipped over to where the Santa hats and elf ears were, grabbing the Santa hat for Max while she grabbed some elf ears for herself.

Turning back to her friend she didn't even give him any time to protest before she placed the hat on his head and then the ears on her own. "You look cute in that Max." She teased as she handed him the chocolate that she also picked up.

"Your hat suits you too, Kapoor." The fourth year nodded her head in greeting to the Seventh year Gryffindor.

Defence Against the Dark Arts was quite a difficult class. Okay, it wasn't as difficult as Potions, and the professor was really good. But some of the things they looked in to in this lesson had complexities that Max had to struggle through to master. It wasn't that he couldn't do it, no, it was just that sometimes he wasn't decisive enough to know what he wanted to do.

Following Prim to Jake's classroom, Max wondered idly what they would be doing this lesson. Hopefully something fun, what with it being Christmas time. As they arrived, Max was adorned with a Santa's hat, and couldn't help but smile as he took the chocolate. "Cute?" Max asked, chuckling and shaking his head. "You look rather silly, if you ask me!" He insisted, but his laugh showed that he was only teasing her.

"Hey Jake." Max added to the professor, holding up his chocolate. "Thanks!" He added, putting it in his bag for later. Best not to have too many e-numbers before class began.

Christmas was approaching which meant the being alone again a home or then staying her in Hogwarts with a bunch of other students who don't go home. People all around her seemed to really enjoy this holiday but not Delilah. She hated it actually. She began to hate it after her mother died because holiday without family isn't fun and when you don't even get any gifts because simply your father forgets it then yeah. She hates this coming holiday.

Anyways she walked into the DADA lesson. One of the lessons what she liked actually even if she wasn't that good in it. "Hello," she said with a small smile on her face which was a fake one. She really wasn't in the happy mood today. Since everyone around her kept talking about how much fun they will have in Christmas holiday. And she saw all that Christmas stuff. She walked over it and took from there just chocolate. She didn't really care about that other stuff. She didn't find a joy in Christmas. She probably was one of few who didn't like it. She just even can't pretend she likes the holiday.

It was growing frightfully close to Christmas, which meant one of two things. Staying at Hogwarts and being stone cold bored because Merlin knew Ellie would be going home to her army of a family, and he'd be stuck with Cara and Elenore. Or, he could go home, and be stone cold bored as he dealt with the illustrious parties his parents would undoubtedly throw, and he'd be stuck with Cara and Elenore. Either way, he was not going to enjoy the season.

Stepping in to Defence Against the Dark Arts, though, it seemed like Professor Newbury (of the male variety) was in the mood for the season. Taking in the hats laid out with chocolate, Jacques moved to the side of the room without picking one up. Placing his bag on the floor beside him, the Frenchman waited patiently for the lesson to begin. He was quite sure that Professor Newbury would have at least chosen something fun.

Noting the shaking of the trunk, Jacques' eyes turned to the box, mild curiosity playing on his features as he... guessed, he knew what might be in there.

Lux eyed the trunk in the room the moment she stepped in. Her jaw clenched as she gave it a death glare. If it was what she thought it was, she was determined to not let it affect her again. The previous boggart had blindsided her and she hadn't been ready for it. If it was a boggart in that trunk, she had an idea of what to expect and would not let it get the better of her. After breaking down in that memorable DADA class, she'd renewed her vow to never cry again, and she was determined to keep it this time.

Sparing a glance at the things Jake had laid out, Lux grabbed a handful of chocolates - because nobody could resist the perfection that was chocolate - and made her way to the back to the classroom. Her ears picked up the conversation that was going on and the words of one particular female Gryffindor.

"You all look downright ridiculous!" she called out, rolling her eyes. She wanted to make a jab at Jake for wearing stupid antlers but managed to hold her tongue. Being head girl meant she had to show some respect and though that was equivalent to torture for Lux, it was worth keeping the position.

As the classroom filled up (and the majority of students took to joining in with the festive cheer) Jake smiled warmly, responding to each greeting with a 'hello' in return, or a 'you're welcome' in response to a thank you. It was only small things he'd bought, nothing too expensive, but a bit of fun. With the flow of students slowing down, Jake checked his watch and nodded to himself.

Getting up from his desk, Jake moved through the mill of student. "Good morning, everyone. I hope you enjoy the chocolate, if not anything else." Jake told them, amusement playing on his own lips because he doubted anyone would call him out on that much. "Oh, and Miss Bailey, we may look ridiculous, but we're having fun." Jake replied to the Head Girl - he wasn't starting anything, just putting the witch back in her place before anyone else could.

"So, today," Jake continued, tapping the top of the trunk which gave a shake almost on cue. "We have this to deal with. Tell me, does anyone have an inkling as to what I have brought along to class today?" Jake posed the question, seeing who knew anything about Boggarts.

Jacques could not help but smirk to himself as the Head Girl was put down quite some by the teacher for trying to berate those who had decided to put the hats on. Served her right, really, if she was going to try and act smart in front of authoritative figures. But it wasn't a complete bashing, much to Jacques dismay, like that which would probably have been handed out by Professor Balan.

As Professor Newbury, Jake, started the lesson, Jacques' eyes turned back to the trunk that rattled on cue. Shaking his head slightly at that much, Jacques tuned in just in time to hear the question being posed. Shaking his head in derision that their professor could really ask such an obvious question, Jacques replied.

"It's obviously a Boggart, professor. I'm not sure that question was wholly necessary." Jacques replied to the question, not bothering to look towards their professor as she replied, his eyes simply boring in to the trunk, wondering what might lie beneath.

The reply - a lazy reply at that - which came from Jacques was right. Jake wondered if the boy had read ahead, or had past dealings with the beast trapped inside the box, but decided not to ask. Instead, Jake focused on the answer. "Correct, Jacques, have five points for Slytherin." Jake acknowledged the answer before continuing on once more.

"So, the Boggart is an unusual creature - no one knows what form a Boggart takes when you can't see it. Why, might you ask, then, do we have it today? A Boggart is a dark creature, a shape shifter, which takes the form of your greatest fears." Jake explained, allowing a small pause. "Yes, I know, great, just what you wanted. But, today is actually fun. Upon seeing your Boggart take shape, you're going to picture it turning in to something amusing, and, using the spell, Riddikulus, we are going to repel the creature with laughter.

"Now, who would like to try to take on the creature first?" Jake prompted, looking around for a volunteer.

Lux merely rolled her eyes at Jake's words. If he'd wanted them to affect her, he would be disappointed. "Right, fun at the price of your dignity," she muttered under her breath, too soft for anyone to hear. Her definition of fun definitely did not include wearing outrageously childish hats. Fun was more like, inflicting torture, or scaring toddlers witless. Seriously, if Jake wanted to be taken seriously and respected as a professor, he should've shed the stupid reindeer horns.

At Jacques' words and Jake's confirmation, Lux narrowed her eyes. She'd been right. This was going to be easy. She knew what to expect and she wouldn't let it affect her. She was ready. "I'll go first," she volunteered, stepping forward, chin held high with pride.

She steeled her backbone, reminding herself that this wasn't real and she could defeat anything that came her way. A thought entered her mind right before the trunk was opened. What if it wasn't the scene she was expecting? After all, she'd found her parents and dealt with everything that came with that. It was a part of her life that was closed. She didn't have time to ponder more on it though.

The Boggart was starting to shift. Lux, wanting to see what it would be this time, didn't cast the spell immediately. This time, she saw herself. It took her a moment to recognise herself because she was dressed in a light pink dress and she was being [i[nice[/i], handing out candy - that wasn't poisoned - to little children. And she was enjoying it.

Quickly, before she let what she'd seen get to her, he lifted her wand and casted the spell in a firm voice, picturing Kamren in a ballerina tutu flapping around to Swan Lake. "Riddikulus!" Laughter bubbled up and she let it lose, dispelling the Boggart.

She made her way back to the classroom but didn't pay attention to anything else as she thought over what she'd seen. Boggarts revealed fears so there was no denying the fact that Lux feared becoming a softie. But what brought on this fear? She'd never been afraid of changing; she'd always struck fear into those who knew what she was capable of doing to them. Was it because she had been living with Kamren and Clarinda? Did they have anything to do with it? It was the only explanation. Living with them had softened her.

Her eyebrows drew down in determination. She wouldn't let that happen.

As Prim listened to Jake, the brunette female suddenly felt apprehensive about what her boggart would be. At first, she thought it would be her looking dead to the world but than an image of her father, of Walter Byrne, flashed in her mind and she shuddered and wondered what she would do if that man appeared as her boggart. It would make everything more complicated, it would make people question why the man appeared as her boggart.

As the Head Girl, nastyrudeandpossibleenemy stepped forward to go first, the brunette watched as the woman's boggart turn into a nice version of her which just made Prim wonder what type of person Lux actually was and truthfully she was thankful she didn't know the seventh year or that she never even talked to her. Prim had a feeling her sanity wouldn't survive.

"...I'll go next." She spoke in a shaky voice as she stepped forward, her eyes wearily eyeing the mass in front of her as the boggart slowly gained a female-like posture before it quickly changed shape to that of a male in his forties, a haggard look, old, messy clothes and a crazed glint in his eyes; her own eyes, oh so familiar to that of his though her attention wasn't on that flitted down to the Dark Mark on the man's arm before she took a much closer look at the man and, recognising some of the features that she herself had seen in the mirror whenever she looked into it, took in a sharp breath that rattled her ribs.

"Father..." She breathed the word out so quietly, so brokenly, no-one would've been able to hear but Jake who was standing close by. And she hoped that he hadn't heard because there would be uncomfortable questions from her Professor should he try to inquire about her boggart.

Her arm shook as she rose it and, imagining one of her fellow orphans who had ended up being used as a doll by the older girls and who had been dressed in dresses because of his androgynous looks, she firmly spoke the incantation. "Riddikulus!"

Letting out a soft, forced chuckle pass her lips the fourth year shakily made her way to the back of her classroom and collapsed on one of the chairs, her hands shaking as she placed her face in them, the shivers of dread wrecked her body.

Prim had told Max about her dad. Well... she'd tried. The poor witch had probably ended up very frustrated when Max kept coming back to the point she had a dad - even if he was on the run. Max was, unfortunately, finding it hard to see why Prim was struggling with it, because he couldn't put himself in her shoes. However, Max was there, when she wanted to talk, he would listen, but he didn't have much in the way of advice.

But as Primrose took to the floor to try to the spell out on the Boggart, Max had been taken aback to see a man. Max didn't know for sure, but he could guess this might be her dad. He didn't look very nice... Clenching his fist, Max willed her on, hoping she could defeat the Boggart. Prim did, on her first go, and as she moved away - and not back to him, Max took the hint, his smile that had formed on her success fading as he looked back towards the Boggart.

"I'll try, Jake!" Max called out, pulling his wand from his belt and stepping in front of the beast. This was, probably, one of the only creatures Max knew he never wanted to own. And he could feel the fear growing inside of him as he waited for the creature to change.

What Max had not been ready for, however, was that the Boggart would not take one shape. Much like Max's mind, the Boggart didn't seem to be able to focus on a single fear. Instead, it flipped first to his parents, standing before him, and telling him (and the rest of the room) how they thought he was useless. How they were so dissappointed to have him as a son when they could have had someone who made them feel proud.

They'd barely finished that sentence before the image shifted. Replaced with what many would assume to be a pile of twigs. But Max didn't need to look twice to know that this was Buckle and his family that were currently out in the woods. Max's eyes began to sting in that moment, looking on helplessly. He could hear the muffled sound of Professor Jake's voice, but it didn't register.

But the Boggart shifted again, this time with two faces the whole class would know. Together, though, in this representation, Elyah and Prim leered at him, their nose turned up in disgust. "Why would we think of you as a friend? You're so weird. And quirky looking. Nobody likes you, Max!" The Boggart said, because both girls laughed in a manner that was not their own.

Max's arm had fallen to his side, his shoulders sagging in defeat as the Boggart amalgamated the three of them together.

Max barely noticed Professor Jake step across him - nor the Boggart change, before laughter filled the room, and the trunk snapped shut. It was only then that Max realised his cheeks were damp, and his hands moved quickly to brush the tears, but it was much too late. The damage had been done.

Turning on his heel, Max ran from the room without looking back, trying to put as much difference between him and the Boggart as possible. He did not want to go back to DADA ever, ever again.

Learning magic was, Serenity found, quite fun. The Professor for Defense Against Dark Arts was a nice man, someone she found herself trusting automatically. That particular class was also interesting, since she got to use her wand and cast spells -- except today.

As always, Serenity stood at the back; while she normally preferred the front row for note-taking, during practical lessons she favoured the wall, simply because she was nervous about performing magic. She wasn’t exactly the most powerful, and her spells often failed unless she practised really hard, so being forced to practise in front of others wasn’t something she enjoyed.

And today was even worse. They were going to be trying to get rid of a boggart. A boggart, that would reveal her biggest fear to all her classmates. A boggart, and Serenity was beginning to wonder if she could somehow get out of it. But the more she thought about it, the more she realised she had absolutely no idea what her greatest fear was, and not knowing was annoying her far more than her fear was preventing her from stepping forward.

Before she quite knew what was going on, fist curled around her wand, she walked through the crowd of students, Tammie following dutifully behind, and approached the trunk. Almost in slow motion it opened and a figure stepped out. Her heart started pounding as she recognised it as Aunt Sally, barely registering her own movements of raising her wand, spell on the tip of her tongue.

”I don’t want you to live with me anymore.”

Serenity faltered.

”The Ministry wants nothing to do with you.” Aunt Sally continued.

“Why?” The question left her lips before she knew she wanted to speak.

Aunt Sally crossed her arms and rolled her eyes. ”You’ve outlived your purpose.”

Serenity blinked, a strange wetness spilling onto her cheeks and tracing an itchy, slow line down to her chin. The last time she cried was when she Saw and Felt a stranger murder someone a year ago. After that, she saw no purpose in tears; they didn’t change anything. “Where will I go?” she whispered, her hand dropping, wand almost falling from her hand.

And then there was a warm hand grabbing her wrist, pulling at her, and she glanced down to see Tammie there, shaking her head. “Serenity need to leave now. Boggart not safe,” the elf said, tugging once again. Automatically, still reeling from being told by Aunt Sally that she was no longer wanted, Serenity allowed the elf to lead her, breaking into a run to keep up; it was, after all, what she was trained to do by the ministry.

Leaving the classroom entirely, Tammie led her to a quiet corner of the school, where Serenity drew her knees up to her chest and wept.
