PostSubject: DADA: Lesson Three (All Years)   Wed Mar 08, 2017 7:12 pm

Jake was ready for the summer - as he was sure a number of his students were too. It would allow him more time in the day to spend with his family, and to get away from the school for a month or two and recover from the horrors of the Deadly Nightshade attack and the toll it had taken on the school. Jake had not been on duty that day - instead he'd been with his wife and children.

And, he had felt so very, very guilt.

Veronika had tried to assure him that it was okay, but some of their students had died... He could have, possibly, done something to make it not happen that way. But it had happened, and Jake could not change the past.

So, instead, he'd come up with a more practical lesson. The Full Body-Bind Curse the board read, for those who looked up when they entered, they would know in an instant what they would be covering. It was only a second year spell, Jake was very aware. But if the older years could already do this they could perfect it. Or, Jake could create a dueling scenario, so that they tested their abilities more. He was flexible, he just hoped the kids were too.

As usual, Jake sat atop his desk, a desk that sat before an empty room, because he'd always been a practical teacher.

DADA had always been Prim's favourite lesson, not counting Potion's, but the reason why she did like it was because Jake always managed to make the lessons fun even if at times people complained about his style of teaching. It made the hour pass by quick and it didn't bore people to death, no matter how much they wanted to complain about them.

As was usual, Prim tugged Max with her to DADA, she had no plans on being alone in that lesson no matter how much she liked Jake as a Professor, a soft hum and a small smile on her lips; she noted with amusement that many people shot her bewildered looks as she dragged Max behind her, many people probably wondering how a small girl like her could drag a guy like Max without even breaking a sweat.

Pushing the door to the classroom open, Prim beamed at Jake and waved her hand, skipping over to her usual place in the room. "Hey Jake!" The chirpy girl said as she hummed, placing her book bag down near the walls of the class so that it didn't get in the way.

The last Defense Against the Dark Arts class hadn't gone so well, what with the boggart and Aunt Sally and... Serenity held back a shudder. The tears had been unnecessary, as tears usually were, and she hated herself for having given in so easily to sadness. No, she knew she was stronger than that -- raised to be stronger than that -- and so, with her head held high, she promised herself that no matter what happened today in class, she would not cry.

Tammie right beside her as usual, she entered class, sticking to the walls as usual. With a murmur of greeting to the Professor, she glanced at the words on the board. Full Body-Bind Curse she thought, mulling over the words and trying to recall the spell.

Tracing the wand pattern with her finger, movements subtle and hidden behind her back, she murmured, "Petrificus totalus," trying to get the pronunciations right. Once satisfied she was correct, she relaxed a little more. It wasn't going to be too hard a class, from the looks of it.

Amber hated DADA. It wasn't that the Professor wasn't nice -- he was one of her favourites -- or that the disliked the subject in itself. It was simply the fact that magic and anything that had to do with verbal queues were simply not something she could do well, if at all. She had to focus solely on non-verbal magic, which, for her age, was verging on impossible.

With a sigh to herself, she stepped into the classroom, noting with a sinking feeling in her chest that the class was empty. On the rare occasion that there were chairs, she knew that it was more of a theoretical lesson, and she could relax. But, those days were rare, and Amber stood off at the side as her eyes took in the words on the board.

A simple spell that she should, by right, know. But a hard one to do without the words. Signing a simple hello to the professor with as genuine a smile as she could manage, Amber waited for Elleon to arrive; he'd understand how she felt.

Elleon more his way to DADA, dragging his feet and sighing. He didn't particularly like DADA - he never did - mostly because he was usually behind on the practical aspects of it. He knew the theory well enough and could probably tell you the use, incantation and -sometimes - even the history of it. Having to repeat the year helped a little in the sense that he already knew some of what they were doing, but he still struggled with it. His sister had less and less time to go through the pronunciations with him, leaving him to try and guess which part of the word he got wrong and how to correct it.

Thank Merlin for Amber. At least he wasn't alone in this.

Entering the classroom, he gave the professor a wave and read what was on the board. Petrificus totalus he thought to himself, seeing the words clearly in his mind. Now he just had to pronounce it properly - or try and do it non-verbally. His non-verbal spells had improved quite a bit since the previous year, but he wasn't sure if he was good enough for this. There was only one way to find out.

Spotting his best friend, Elleon made his way to her, greeting her with a bright smile. "Amber, hey! How've you been?"

Another mixed class brought forth another groan from Corbin as he headed up the stairs from his common room to the third floor. It was rather annoying to be stuck with the younger ones learning basic things that he'd long since mastered. Still, if they had split into upper and lower, that meant Naomi would be there. And she, quite honestly, was fun.

Stepping into class, he took in the words on the board with a hidden roll of the eyes; the spell was so basic, so easy, that it almost wasn't worth his time attending. But the last thing he needed or wanted was a detention, lest it fall on the day of a party and he had to cancel the whole thing. That and the fact that it would be an opportunity to show the younger ones how things were really done.

"Professor," he greeted, moving to the front of the class and waiting for it to start.

The moment Lux's eyes landed on the board and saw what was written there, she groaned. She'd been hoping for something more...exciting, something more dangerous and damaging too. The Full Body-Bind Curse was one she'd already perfected. At first, she considered just marching out of there, but her desire to graduate was far greater than the threat of boredom.

Shooting a dirty are-you-serious look at the professor, Lux walked to the back of the classroom where she crossed her arms and waited for the class to start. Her only hope now was that Jake would allow them to use the spell on each other instead of just dummies. Her eyes wandered to the two deaf kids and a plan formulated in her mind. She'd seen them talking with their hands. If she were to use the curse on them...it would just be like shutting people up. They wouldn't be able to move their hands and therefore, wouldn't be able to communicate at all. That could be fun. It would, of course, be more fun if there wasn't a counter-curse for it, but one couldn't always have their way all the time. Unfortunately.

As Roxy stepped into the classroom, her eyes instantly fell onto the board and she groaned, cursing in German before her eyes roved over the students only for them to light up when she saw Serenity; the young girl had impressed Roxanne and the third year had taken an instant liking to the first year so without even thinking about it she made her way over to where the Seer was, a small smile on her lips.

"Hey Serenity." She said with a soft smile upon her lips before she turned back to the class. "Hi Jake!" At first Roxy had been weary of using a Professor's first name but well the man had been adamant about it so she couldn't refuse him.

As she stood in the class, she thought on how their lesson was going to go; there were many people there who already knew that curse, herself included, but there were also quite a few firsties who had no idea so it could go either way. Sighing, she just decided to wait on what would happen.

Skipping into class, Eleonora took in the lack of desks and let out a happy squeal; that meant they were going to do something practical. Sure, most of the time this was the case, but it still filled her with joy each time. It meant she didn't need to sit down for long periods of time and try and focus on someone talking for what felt like days on end. It also meant she got to practise magic, and what witch didn't enjoy casting spells?

Making her way to the front of the class, she grinned at the professor.

"Hello Pro-" she started, then frowned and stopped herself. She'd been corrected enough times by now to recall that the Professor didn't like being called that. "I mean Jake." She paused, smile returning. "I remembered all on my own! Isnt that great? Maybe next time I won't even have the 'pro' part. We're doing the full-body-bind curse? Isn't that the petrificus totalus one? Oh! I remembered it, yay! I sometimes forget spells..."

Trailing off, she shrugged, almost to herself, and stopped talking, practically bouncing on her feet as she waited for the lesson to start.

Defence Against the Dark Arts was one of the few classes that Naomi got a little bit of a kick out of. For one, the professor was very easy on the eye - the fact he was a dad hadn't changed Naomi's opinion, either. And, on top of all of that, the class was normally always a practical one. You couldn't not like a practical lesson - surely!

Slipping through the door, Naomi's eyes met Corbin's first, and her jaw set a little bit. This was all she needed, that wretched boy in lessons! "Henderson." She greeted, moving to stand by his side. She was not going to be so petty as to stand on the other side of the room, or something, she was bigger than that.

"Morning Jake." She added to the professor, setting her bag down against the wall and waiting for him to make a start on the lesson. Her eyes landed on the spell, and she had to try to contain a smile. Naomi already knew who she'd be partnering.

Defence Against the Dark Arts was a tolerable subject - often linking Charms with a more practical use and adding things in to play that were interesting enough. Dimitri's talent definitely lied in the Charms area, though, so he was hoping it would be a building on that subject today, rather than anything else.

Hurrying up to the third floor, the Ravenclaw slipped through the door in to the classroom and cast his eye immediately to the board. Looking approvingly at the subject, Dimitri's eyes then scanned the classroom for people he knew. Primrose was there, but she had Max in tow, so he moved to stand on his own, waiting for the lesson to begin so that they could make a start, on what the Ravenclaw assumed, would be practicing the spell on dummies.

Sliding his wand from his pocket, Dimitri twirled it idly in between his fingers as he waited for the lesson to begin.

Being dragged back to Defence Against the Dark Arts was not something that Max was going to thank Prim for. The last lesson he'd attended had been horrible. Why would he want to go back? But, he'd relented when Prim had started to pull him towards class, following her instead because it was easier than arguing with her.

As they'd stepped in to the classroom, Max had acknowledged the professor by his first name, before taking in what was on the board. Looking around, there didn't seem to be any dummies in this class... Unless Jake had hidden them. Putting his bag down next to Prim's, the Gryffindor voiced his worries on the subject.

"Do you think we'll be trying to do this to each other?" Max asked Prim because his mind was already reeling with the idea of being hit with the spell. How in Merlin's name was that going to feel?

Defence Against the Dark Arts was slightly more interesting than most classes, because it was almost always practical, and normally involved learning spells that could be used in an offensive manner. Though, not always directly, Mathew would admit, he did enjoy the lesson a little more than the others that were on offer at the school.

It didn't, however, mean that the boy was going to hurry himself to be on time, no, he pretty much walked through the door on the dot of the hour, just about avoiding being late.

Taking in the board, a small smirk touched the Hufflepuff's features as he moved to stand on his own. He couldn't help but wonder if they would be working on their own, or in partners. Mathew was hoping for the latter, aiming a spell like this at a younger student would be great fun. Especially seeing as he was more than a little confident in his ability to block their response...

This lesson was, Mathew hoped, going to be quite interesting indeed.

"Good morning, Prim - I see the catch of the day is one Maximillian!" Jake joked softly as the young witch dragged Max in to the classroom. Jake had felt bad - for both of them - after the last lesson, but he was definitely glad to see them both back, even if the male had been dragged.

"Morning Serenity." Jake replied to the Ravenclaw's murmured hello, giving her a small smile, even though she wasn't an overly talkative student, it didn't hurt to be nice.

As Amber and Elleon entered, Jake switched from a verbal hello, to a small wave to each of them, noting to himself to make sure he looked in their direction when he started the class so that they could keep up with the lesson. Jake, unfortunately, didn't know sign language, and even more unfortunately, didn't have the time to learn to aid the two of them, but he was definitely available to help them, or repeat things if they needed him to.

"Morning Corbin, Lux!" Jake added at the arrival of the next two students - noting Lux's look, Jake gave her a small, apologetic smile, but one witch was not going to change his lesson. Unfortunate as that might be for her. "Morning Roxy." Jake added to the Ravenclaw witch who turned up next, smiling warmly at her as she made a beeline for the other Ravenclaw.

Next in was Eleonora - or Nora as she preferred - and as always, she was a little bouncing bundle of a child. "Good morning, Nora." Jake replied, his smile growing as she managed to correct herself. "Well done, you're getting there with it, huh?" Jake added, before nodding vigorously at her words, before bringing a finger up to his lips. "Don't tell everyone just yet." He told her with a small wink.

The last few students were, thankfully, a lot less chatty, which meant Jake didn't have to do more than wish them good morning. Checking his watch after Mathew arrived, Jake clapped his hands together to get everyone's attention.

"Good morning everyone once again. I'm glad so many of you have turned up today - this will hopefully make it a little bit more fun. Now, for those of you who have cast your eye across the board, you will see that we are today studying the Full Body Bind Curse." Jake explained, motioning to the board behind him. "Now, as Nora has already told me, the incantation is Petrificus Totalus - take five points for that, by the way!" Jake told the Hufflepuff with a warm smile.

"But, that's not nearly enough, is it - who can tell me the wand movement? What this spell does? What are it's uses?" Jake prompted, all the time making sure he spoke towards Amber and Elleon to make it easier for them to follow. Only when he'd finished speaking, did Jake look around the room for an answer.

Florrie was late. Late? That was unacceptable. But, there was no use in worrying about it now, there was nothing she could do except hope that she hadn't missed too much. Thankfully, arriving at the classroom, they were only just getting started learning about the body bind curse, or petrificus totalus, Jake had stated, giving five points to the student who'd stated it.

She slipped in silently, making her way over to her friend Serenity, not offering an explanation for her lateness- that was that she had stayed up far too late and had overslept. In all fairness, her lack of sleep had been for a good reason- reading. She'd lost track of time, something unusual for her. But it had just been a very intriguing book.

She dropped her bag to the floor quietly, not wanting to bring anymore attention to her than she already had by being late.

Roxanne loved DADA if only because it gave her a grasp on the Defensive side of Dark Arts and enabled her magical core to be more adapted to these types of spells as well; there was a reason why she was always having trouble with some of the Light charms and spells in class and that was purely because her core was more attuned to Dark Magic.

The fact that they were learning the Full Body-Bind Curse didn't bother the Ravenclaw in the least and instead. she eagerly leant forward to listen; the fact that they were going to be paired off to do the lesson made her eager to get a start on it.

"The spell basically paralyses a person." Roxanne piped up with a small smile upon her lips as she rocked on her heels. "It snaps the person's legs and arms together and causes them to fall backwards."

As the Ravenclaw witch spoke up with an answer, Jake turned his attention to her, and smiled as she explained the effects of the spell. "Very good, Roxy - take five points for Ravenclaw for your answer." Jake told the witch, turning back to the class at large.

"The wand movement for this spell is as follows." Jake added, taking out his wand and drawing a hook like shape with his wand. "Please remember, as always to enunciate the words clearly, and have a clear picture in your mind as to what it is you would like to accomplish in this moment.

"Now, today, you will be working in twos. The younger students I want you to simply try to cast the spell on one another, and then I will come around to aid you in undoing the spell. The older students, or those who are confident with this spell, I would like for you to turn this in to something of a duel, using only this spell, and shield spells." Jake explained, so that this could be more enjoyable and practical for the older years.

"Please pair up with someone of equal abilities to yourself, and, when you've found some space, please begin." Jake explained, flicking his wand to create a cushioning charm on the floor so that nobody could get hurt.

Teamwork? That was a good thing right? Lana looked around the crowded room that had been void of desks. Several first years but none she had actually spoken to and so she shied away. She was usually quite outgoing except she had absolutely no clue what she was doing, in fact going to these classes made her feel like she was a part of this huge joke.

She didn't feel magical, she didn't feel as though she could cast a spell. The girl looked down slightly to her wand. It was just a piece of wood. She should be back home, swimming and chasing colorful fish. Though with her luck, this was am ploy to send her away. Her parents had proven that they loved her, clearly more than her real parents did but what if now she was too adventurous, too strong willed? Was this all a ploy to rid of her?

Lana supposed she could try to talk to someone, after all these were the people she'd know for the next seven years right? Another glance around the room reminded her that everyone else seemed to have already chosen a partner and she didn't want to be the girl stuck working with the professor.

Lux stood at the back of the classroom, an intensely bored expression on her face as a Ravenclaw answered and Jake continued with the lesson. She wished she were somewhere else, perhaps off experimenting with those very interesting torture devices she found in a shady shop in town preferably on one of the annoying younger years. That would be much better than going through a class on something she already knew how to do.

She rolled her eyes as the professor asked them to pair up before telling them they could start. No, that would not do at all. One glance told her that she was the oldest year there- she silently cursed her misfortune at having to repeat a year - and going up against any of them would not be challenging or fun at all. The closest year to her were the fifth year students and she hated them all - except perhaps Corbin. He was tolerable. But perhaps already taken. Lux swore again. Then a smile, one full of mischief, began to grow on her cheeks.

Taking her wand out, she cast the spell at Elleon and the next second, casted it on Amber, watching how the two people who depended so much on their hands would react. It wouldn't be as fun as she would've liked since Jake would undo it, but she deserved some amusement for having to endure the class.

Listening to the Professor, Prim was actually also signing away towards Elleon and Amber, knowing that Elleon would be hard pressed in reading the Professor's lips. She was thankful for her knowledge of the sign language even if she did mess up on some spellings of the words.

The moment Prim heard that they should pair up, she instantly turned towards Max and grinned at her boyfriend. "Well, let's pair up then." At least with Max, she knew she was on the equal terms when it came to abilities not to mention she wasn't going to be too afraid in actually hexing her boyfriend. "Do you want to start or should I?" She wouldn't mind either way.

The spell wasn't too hard to learn and while Prim already knew it, well in theory she knew it, she needed to learn how to cast it. Her attention though turned towards the spells she could see sailing towards the two deaf children, her eyes widened and she whipped her head around to stare at the person it came from; she would be much too late in putting up a shield to stop the spells from hitting the two children.

"...Bailey." She hissed and dug her fingers into her palms as she held herself back from running over to the Slytherin and nailing her in the face. She doubted Jake would enjoy having a bitch-fest in his lesson.

As the explanation of the class was given, Naomi turned to Corbin almost the moment Jake was finished, raising an eyebrow at him in silent question. Slipping her wand from her belt, Naomi moved slightly away from her fellow Slytherin, before turning back to him with an amused smile.

"Come on then, Henderson. This should, at least, be fun for one of us." Naomi insisted, readying herself for the attack. She might be a third year in the school's eyes, but she'd been working much harder this year to get back to her rightful year. She was not someone that Corbin should underestimate in the slightest.

And, though Jake had said only the older years were to duel, Naomi was not going to have herself belittled by the professor, either. She was going to have Corbin Henderson rigid, and falling on his ass, even if it was the last thing she did this lesson.

With Prim turning to him almost immediately when Jake told them to pair up, Max let out a small laugh at her enthusiasm. He expected the Prim would likely be better than him at his, but he was more than willing to give it a go. After all, it was a useful spell, should the Nightshades turn up again.

"Umm..." Max gave a shrug when she asked who should start, standing at the ready with his wand poised. "You can, if you want?" Max suggested, though he was quite sure he was supposed to try and block it, like a mini duel.

Before they could start, though, two jets of light flashed across the room, and Max moved absentmindedly towards Prim - as if he could do anything that she couldn't do herself - and turned to see who had done it. Prim had seen, though, and Max's hand went instantly to hers to stop her from doing anything stupid. Lux Bailey was a force to be reckoned with, and Prim... well, she was a Gryffindor for a reason.

"Jake will sort it." Max told her softly, not wanting a fight to start in the middle of Defence Against the Dark Arts.
