Defence Against the Dark Arts: Lesson One (First to Fourth Years)

After a busy summer, Jake was welcoming back the normality of the classes he took. It would mean he was busier, but routine would set back in, and routine had been missed over the summer holidays. Though, of course, it had not all been doom and gloom. He'd managed to spend a lot of time with his kids, and his wife, something Jake was more that happy with.

Especially seeing as they'd come to the agreement that they would try for just one more child.

This had brought more happiness to Jake's life. He'd always wanted a lot of kids, and now, that was coming true. First, though, he had to deal with the kids in the school. Not his own, but still cared for deeply by the professor.

This year, Jake had chosen to split his classes out, meaning he could focus on the capabilities of the students in smaller sections. He was taking the younger students in the morning, the older ones in the afternoon, hoping this would help both parties.

On the board this morning were two words. Cornish Pixies. Jake sat atop his desk, and, as per usual, he had cleared the room of desk and chairs, denoting a practical lesson.

Cade had disliked the idea of being back to Hogwarts, because he enjoyed summer being spent posting videos on Youtube. Managing to hit about seventy thousand subscribers, and had been sad that he was leaving the Youtube world until about winter-break when he would return, and had found himself making his way to class. Wondering if he could possibly just skip class, but his parents had his sister on watch duty over him.

Which annoyed him, because he was fourteen. The boy did not need a babysitter, but knew that if he tried to say something, it would not end well. But the boy just decided that might as well attend his classes. As he had been making his way to Defense Against the Dark Arts, the class that seemed somewhat okay. Only because the professor had been kind of cool, but he only attended classes, cause it was required.

The boy had arrived at the classroom, that he dreaded the idea of entering. Then again the boy could simply sleep in class, if that was an option. He smirked entering the classroom, seeing no one had been in there just yet. Which made him slightly smirk, as he walked over to back of the room to the closest wall.

Reading the board as it read Cornish Pixies, wondering if maybe they would learn how to defeat those mischievous little creatures. Or maybe even find some way to set them off on others.

Julienne's steps were weightless as she tried to remain unnoticed on her journey into her first class of the new school year. She wore her hair in short waves that cut off at the shoulders, accompanied by a slight bang with the purpose to hide as much of her gaze from the world as possible. The Hufflepuff enjoyed being able to curl up and hide from the world, as most conversations ended after the,"Hello how are you?" stage. It was not that she did not like people. In fact, Julienne found great interest in the stories of those around her. She enjoyed hearing about the triumphs and hardships that others had been through, but she simply did not know how to respond to the stories that she heard. Usually, she just hid within herself and listened to the world without having to tell her stories in return. It was better this way.

As she entered the classroom, Julienne made sure to stand towards the back wall. She looked around to notice that only one other student had arrived before she. The board informed her that today's lesson would be about cornish pixies. The young girl could feel a shiver crawl through her spine. She'd read about these creatures before. They were tricky and obnoxious. She hoped that the professor had not brought them with him today. Hopefully, the lesson would be pure theory. God only knew what would happen if they were unleashed on the class.

Elleon trudged into DADA, wishing that such a class didn't exist. So far, it was still the class in which he received the lowest grade. Transfiguration and charms were close rivals for that position, but DADA still took the crown for worst grade in the history of students at Hogwarts. Perhaps he was exaggerating that last part but it represented his feelings pretty well.

It was rather discouraging to look at his grades and see DADA always at the bottom. He worked hard, he really did, but perhaps he just wasn't cut out for this particular class. The theoretical part was fine; it was just the practical part he suffered in. At least Jake was nice. That helped a ton. If he'd been a nasty teacher who scolded and degraded him for always scoring the lowest, Elleon probably would've quit the class.

Entering the room, he gave Jake his usual greeting of a wave and smile. He'd actually assigned the professor his own name sign - which was in ASL for Amber's benefit - but he didn't think Jake would know what he was saying so he didn't use it. Glancing around the class, he noticed two other students there, both also Hufflepuffs standing to the side but near the front of the room.

Not really in the mood for socialising and not wanting to tire his eyes out trying to lipread two people at once before class started, Elleon turned his attention to the board. He knew about Cornish Pixies and loved that they had such life and spunk in them. For tiny creatures, they really knew how to wreak havoc. Most likely, they were going to learn about how to defend themselves and most likely, Elleon wouldn't succeed.

DADA was one few lessons Delilah did like now. It seemed interesting and useful one in future. She has never really been that good in this lesson. She barely even answers to questions here. She just doesn't wanna really stand out or say something that is wrong when she isn't completely sure about her answer.

She walked into the classroom and noticed there were few people already. She said hello to the professor and walked over the wall another side of the room. She sat down there on the ground and waited for the lesson to begin now there.

Delilah looked at the board and saw there two words which were Chronix Pixies. She didn't know very much about those creatures. So she figured she will be today the one who will listen to others there. She looked around the classroom since she was actually a bit of bored right now. She wasn't so excited about this lesson today really.

It was overly exciting to be back at Hogwarts for a second year! Lana was glad her parents had allowed her to go back but more importantly she was grateful that Hogwarts had actually wanted her back for she cheered when she received her second year shopping list.

The Hufflepuff was excited to see both old and new classes when she looked at her timetable for the year. Early classes didn't bother her as much as later classes because at some point in the day, she wanted to go for a quick swim. Seemed like this year, all of her classes were pretty early on, starting with Defense Against the Dark Arts. It looked as thought that class was split this year which to Lana meant that maybe it'd be a bit easier to learn since the older students would be gone.

Lana had gotten ready in a minute and walked down to the classroom, her curly hair was pinned back and up today, mostly to keep it out of her way since Jake's classes seemed to be more hands-on. Entering the classroom, she smiled and gave a little wave to Jake, "Goodmorning Professor." She was excited. She liked Professor Jake, he was nice and he had a family and all men with a family were usually nice but Jake was exceptionally nice.

Lana took a position alongside the class walls and waited for today's lesson. The board said Cornish Pixies and if Lana was right, that was some annoying creatures that fly or something. She thought she had skimmed past it in a book at one point but she didn't remember. Hawaii was still on her mind.

Being back at Hogwarts after a summer in Germany was certainly different but Roxanne did enjoy the school and loved the people there as well as the lessons; it was no secret that she especially enjoyed DADA and Potions, even if the Potion's professor did leave a little bit to be desired when it came to teaching.

Running through the halls, the Förstner Heir skidded to a stop in front of the door before she walked in,
brushing away the hair that fell into her face and wiping away the sweat that was gathering on the base of her neck.

"Hey, Jake!" She called with a wide smile on her lips, waving her hand as she moved towards the back of the room where she could comfortably see Jake but also the rest of the class. She flicked her eyes towards the board to see what they were focusing on today, Cornish Pixies before she turned back to Jake.

Hopefully, the lesson would be a fun one today.

Zoey skipped joyfully into the classroom and smiled when she saw a few people there. She smiled at Professor Newberry "Hello professor." She said before entering the classroom and took a seat next to the same boy from her potions class "Hello, Elleon" She said as she sat down. She got out her stuff for the class before looking up at the board to see what the days lesson would be. She giggled a bit when she read the words 'Cornish Pixies'. She looked over at Elleon and giggled "Cornish Pixies? Really?" She could not believe they were going go be learning about something so.... childish. She wanted to learn about dragons and dangerous things. Not little blue things she could kick across a foot ball field. She sighed and just rested her head in her arms as she waited for the lesson to begin. Its not like she could just leave, sop Cornish Pixies it was.

Shaun wasn't sure how he felt about this class even after taking it for two years. It wasn't that he was afraid, far from it. He was very happy to learn how to defend himself against magical creatures as well as people. And while this class taught that, he guessed he wished there was no need for it. As he entered the classroom, Shaun looked at the board seeing what was written there and became confused. Was there more than one type that they had to have Cornish added? And it looked like others knew what they were, at least the Ravenclaw did.

Flopping down onto the floor, he crossed his arms and tilting his head back to stare at the ceiling, a finger tapping. What would they be like? From what he'd seen and learned so far, things here were far from what they appeared at first. So if he thought pixies were like Tinkerbell, he was sure that it was far from it. Pixies were probably more like biting monsters or something.

OOC: Hey guys - just a note from a (somewhat) annoyed Jake - please take time to read posts. You would note then that Jake does not have chairs in his classroom. Thanks.

The classroom slowly filled up and Jake replied to the greetings he was given with a soft response of 'good morning' or 'hello'. Even to those who didn't speak, he offered them a word of greeting, or a wave in Elleon's case. Most of the kids he knew quite well, so as they came in he noted those he thought capable, and those who might need a little more guidance than others.

Not that it made a difference to Jake either way.

"Right then, good morning everyone. I hope you all had good summers?" He asked, looking around for the general consensus that they had had a good break. "Today, as some of you might have already noticed from the board, we will be looking at Cornish Pixies. Now, does anyone in here know what they look like?

"But, also, what are their uses? What do they do to those who fall upon them by accident? What spells do we use to defeat them?" Jake prompted, moving from his desk to the board, a piece of chalk in hand, waiting for some of the students to aid the brainstorm that they were going to have.
