PostSubject: Muggle Studies: Lesson 1 (All Years)   Sun Apr 30, 2017 9:35 am

Blake looked around the class, a light frown on his face. This wasn't exactly what he had in mind when he volunteered for a long-term undercover role, but he supposed it wasn't all that bad; he'd always loved teaching, and with both sides of his family being Muggles it was surprisingly easy for him to get the job. It helped, naturally, that Jake was also there -- not that they acknowledged knowing each other before this. Both were professionals, and both knew the risks of undercover work, even if in a school of mostly children.

Still, he wanted -- needed -- friends, and a wink sent to Jake when nobody was around was enough for the other party to know that, sometime soon, they would 'meet' for the 'first' time. It was difficult, being away from Andi like that, since there was a 'no-contact' rule for his safety, and Blake was pining for his girlfriend -- his One Good Thing -- already. The irony was, of course, that she'd found out he liked her while she was undercover at a University.

Pushing thoughts out of his mind, Blake focused on the current task at hand. With a flick of his wand, Blake's somewhat messy, but just legible handwriting appeared on the chalkboard.

"Muggle Photography".

He'd managed to get his hands on a few old polaroid cameras, about one per pair of students, and these were arranged on the desks. It wasn't going to be too hard a lesson, he hoped. Perching himself on the edge of his desk, he checked the time and waited for student to arrive.

Cade had been excited for this particular class, being the only class he was good at. Which lead him to make his way to Muggle Studies. Knowing that they had a new professor, and had been pretty thrilled as it was nearly cut the year prior. Which caused Cade to hope that maybe this year would be different and class would actually last. He had been coming close to the muggle studies classroom.

He had been curious to see what they were learning, and wondering if maybe that could be a class he actually succeeded at. Cade had been smiling as he entered the classroom taking a look around the classroom noticing the new professor, which made smile. The professor had been a man which meant it would like all the other professors.

Since it seemed the school lacked girl professors, but he didn't care. Since he had barely liked any of his professors, only doing things to get him by. And with that Cade took a look on board to find out they were learning about and read it had been Muggle Photography, and he had a smile show up on his face.

As he took a seat wondering if maybe phones counted.

The...discussion she'd had with Toryn had really shaken Stephanie up. Before, she'd been so set in her way of thinking and living. It was just the way she'd always done things as she strived to follow in Verena's footsteps, almost like a checklist. Be popular. Show off wealth. Shun all Muggleborns. Make as many friends as possible. Make her name and presence known in the school. But since that day at the lake... The talk she'd had with Toryn was as welcome as a bucket of ice cold water in the dead of winter, but also quite necessary. There were times she almost agreed with what he'd said, but her pride wouldn't ever let her admit that to him. Still, it gave her a lot to think about.

It didn't help that their exchange had been done right before summer. Through all the balls and parties they attended, Stephanie could not keep her mind off his words. It was safe to say that she did not enjoy herself as she normally would at the Pureblood functions, even stepping on a few dance partner's toes and so lost in her thoughts she didn't hear when poeple called. She'd been so uncharacteristically quiet and unfocused that her siblings had noticed. Thank Merlin she'd managed to pull through the functions well enough - through various means of lies and excuses - that their acquainatnces didn't question her. Perhaps they talked about her behind their back, but Stephanie found that she didn't really care. She was too busy mulling over what her life had been and what Toryn had pointed out to her to bother with gossiping old ladies.

Which was why she'd signed up for Muggle Studies, the last thing she ever thought she'd be doing in Hogwarts. The decision to attend the class was a war she'd fought with herself. To attend it was to show Toryn that she was giving thought to his words. To not attend it was to cheat herself of the opportunity to see if what he said was actually true. In the end, she swallowed her pride. Every theory had to be tested before it can be proven true. If not, it just remained a theory. She would test out Toryn's theory for herself.

She entered the class and seated herself after giving a demure greeting to the professor, her heart pounding over her decision and her mind praying that she wouldn't regret it. Reading what was written on the board, she breathed a little easier. Photography was something she was good at. Not the actual taking of the photographs or working a camera, but she could pose pretty well and knew which angles she looked best at. Perhaps this wouldn't be as unrelatable as she thought it would be.

Cassiopeia's summer had been an interesting one for sure. She had met few new people and same old. She even had some new adventures. Many of those meetings or adventures didn't end so good but she didn't care. She was no back her in school and she knew this year she will have exams end of them. She had no idea how she will do on them. She didn't worry about them yet much, she had so much time until those happen.

The muggle studies were one of the classes what Cassiopeia didn't really enjoy. There were so many reasons for it. She wasn't just interested in muggle stuff that much one of them and she didn't know much about them was another. She still ended somehow taking this class this year. She had no idea why she did it even.

She walked into the classroom and sighed. She didn't even bother to say hello to the professor like she usually did. She walked back of the classroom and took a seat there. She looked chalkboard and read the words there. Photography she read there basically.

She had no idea what they will talk here even. She noticed here was a boy who she had met summer in a sweet shop, who wasn't very nice to him. So right now she even ignored him there right now. She wasn't really in the mood of start some kind of fight again over some ridiculous thing. She basically had decided to ignore everyone unless they had to do something all together.

She wished this lesson will start soon and also will be over soon. So she could to do something else with her time than sitting here and talk about the thing she doesn't know anything about.

Muggle studies had been a class Cabhan didn't actually have to attend but did anyway, for two reasons -- well, many, but two main ones. The first was sheer curiosity: he wanted to know how wizards thought of his kind (or his heritage, rather). Secondly, it was an easy enough A, since he didn't really need to study or anything.

There was also a new Professor (he wasn't sure what happened to the old one nor did he want to ask) and, from what he'd heard, it was a decent enough guy. Professor Mason, or something akin to that.

Stepping into the class, his jaw all but hit the floor as he noticed a familiar face (or rather, hair) in one of the seats. He stopped dead in his tracks, eyes growing wide, and almost dropped the bag he was holding. It was probably not a good impression for the Professor, but all he could think in that moment was: Empty night!, a swear phrase he'd adopted from a book series he'd recently read.

What was she doing here? He couldn't understand it. Unless... Oh crows. She took my words to heart? Cabhan very nearly turned around and booked it out of there, but made himself take a few deep breaths, and, as calmly as he could, he walked over to her, where he paused.

"Stephanie..." he started, then took another breath. "Look, I just..." He brought his hand to the back of his neck, which he could already feel starting to heat up. "I want to... to apologise. For what I said. It wasn't right of me. And... and I don't expect you to forgive me, but..." But? he asked himself mentally. He didn't have an answer to that. "But I'm sorry," he concluded, rather lamely, and then, without waiting for a reply, moved past her and to the front row, where he sat, greeted the Professor, and waited for class to begin.

Already he'd noticed the cameras, but the excitment that came with that had been distinguished by one Stephanie Richardson.

Severine would be lying if she tried to say she wasn't at least a tad bit excited for Muggle Studies, of course had her parents seen it on her timetable - they would've flipped but they hadn't. Severine had decided after much mulling over her options with her twin, Leoni, that if she were to eventually get a real career, she needed to at least know something about Muggles, especially if she wanted to operate in the Muggle world on occasion. Leoni, of course, thought it was ridiculous that Severine could actually bare to even attempt taking a class that gave a glimpse into the Muggle world but Severine thought she was smart.

The seventh year regardless, was pretty happy about her class choices for her final year at Hogwarts and with a renewed energy, she set off to class. She felt like she could easily accomplish this year. After all, the better she did, the better chances her after graduation goals were to be reached meaning moving out of the Palace of Monacco.

The Gryffindor had spent a bit of extra time getting ready this morning before leaving the towers and managing to find her way to the classroom. She had noticed that several other classmates had already beaten her there but that was fine, they were all younger anyways. Severine walked in, straight back, feeling like she was the Queen of Hogwarts and took a seat looking to the board and then back to the Polaroids. This would be interesting, that was definitely a given.

Lainee had never been one to hold anything against muggles, and despised the idea of blood purism. Since she wondered where the acceptance had been in the world, the girl had no clue, and despite growing up a mostly wizard life, she had still wanted to know somewhat about the muggle world. Not just what the muggleborns told them, and she had some knowledge from some of her family members. Even though most muggles in her family had been deceased, leaving her only with half-blood relatives.

The girl had also heard that the class would have another professor. And it seemed strange since it seemed the school always had a new professor. But then again some people just found better jobs, then teaching students. Not like she could blame them, teens were the worst, and she didn't even consider herself being as bad as the others.

She had been very mature for age, well that she was thought. Then again the girl was not always good when she was under pressure. The Ravenclaw had soon arrived at the Muggle Studies class, and had entered to see the new professor. Lainee had to give him credit the guy did not even look like a old person.

Making the job of learning ten times easier, and she soon saw the board had read Muggle Photography. The girl had smiled she had like some photography, even though the only one she knew was from a having phone that she rarely used due to not having any muggle friends to even talk to. Not many wizards had social media, which led to the girl to spot the polaroid cameras on each of the desks.

The girl smiled as she took a seat at one of them, and waited for the lesson to begin.

Delilah liked muggle studies lessons mostly because they were interesting and she did understand most of the things in this lesson. She is muggleborn and she did grow up in the muggle world. She has never even lived in wizarding world if you don't count Hogwarts.

She walked into the classroom and noticed there was already few people. She barely knew anyone here. She walked towards one of the empty seats in the lesson. She didn't really wanna sit next to someone who she barely knew. She had met one of the persons in this classroom in summer but that didn't mean they will be talking now always.

She looked at the board and saw there word photography. It was something about what she actually knew a little bit but not that much. She has barely taken pictures really. Lately, there is no reason even do it so.

Muggle Studies. A complete waste of an hour in Mathew's opinion. But it was a waste of an hour that would allow him to instead not waste the hour, and people watch. Of course, there were only a handful of people Mathew actually wanted to watch, and he was taking something of a punt on those he was going to watch turning up. If not, well, then it would be a waste.

Except, they did have a new professor. And that was mildly interesting.

Mathew would, at least, from today learn about their new professor. Which was why he had pushed through the door to Muggle Studies, given the professor a very cold look up and down, before moving to the back of the room and settling. His eyes befell the subject of today with no interest. This was not why he was here today, he had no love for Muggles, truthfully.

Only those who took the subject.

Roxanne hadn't really been up for taking Muggle Studies that year but she had so much time on her hands that she decided to see what the lesson was on about, not to mention she had seen the new Professor and some eye candy certainly wasn't going to go amiss, though truthfully no-one beat Professor Vasquez, in her opinion, on the looker scale.

Slipping into the room, the Ravenclaw found a seat somewhere near the back of the room and sat down,
unknowingly sitting down in front of Mathew Howard, the Hufflepuff boy that she had met only once last year. Taking notice of her fellow students, Roxanne turned her eyes back to the front of the room, taking notice of the topic on the board, before they settled on the Professor and she instantly blushed lightly; okay she could see why the girls were in such a tizzy about coming to Muggle Studies, the Professor was hot.

Maybe she would carry on the lesson for the rest of the year if only to enjoy the sight of the Professor.
No-one said you couldn't enjoy some eye-candy while in a lesson.

Zoey walked down the castle halls towards her first class of the day, Muggle Studies. She had no issues what so ever with this class, being a half blood. So she knew a bit about muggle items and what they were used for. As she entered the classroom, she noticed a few students were already there. She scanned the classroom until she found an empty corner and sat in a chair in that area. She took out her supplies and spread them out in front of her, her normal preparation for a class. Quill, ink pot, parchment, text book, backup quill, back up ink pot. It was the same every class. After preparing she looked around again. Her eyes eventually landed on the front of the classroom and a wide smile broke out across her face when she saw the subject of the days lesson. Muggle Photography. Zoey loved photography. It was a form of art in her mind, and Zoey loved all kinds of art. She grew up taking pictures of her friends and family with her fathers muggle camera. She loved it. She couldn't wait for the lesson to begin

Muggle Studies was one of the lessons what Brayden seems to tolerate. He doesn't have anything against muggles really but yeah he isn't really that big fan of every muggle technology. This class could be at times boring for him but he still did come here at times since this class can be at times even fun too. It all depends on what they will learn there.

As usual, he walked into the classroom and greeted professor. He did sit down somewhere were still free seat. He looked over the board and sighed. He actually knew a little bit about the topic but he wasn't really a very big fan of taking pictures with muggle cameras for sure.

He knew that someone of his friends like taking pictures so he decided to enjoy this lesson as much he can. Maybe he will even learn something new from this class. He has taken few pictures with his phone actually. He isn't really very into the social media stuff but he uses it at times. To keep up with his some friends who he has there.

Now, muggle studies wasn't really something that Corbin would say he particularly enjoyed. It was mostly just entertaining to see how muggles did things -- that and there were some particularly interesting things he then could buy for himself later on. Not only that but he had friends in that class, and even if he didn't, he used it as a chance to watch others and see if anyone was talking about parties or things they shouldn't.

Also, he was prefect, and it looked good.

How in Merlin's name he had made prefect, Corbin would never, ever understand. Him and Lucy, the ones who held parties and brought in alcohol for underaged kids, prefects... It was almost laughable -- no, it was laughable, and he and his friends had almost wet themselves when he got the letter.

But a prefect he was (and with that came the benefit of prefect bathrooms) and so Muggle Studies it was. He entered the class, glancing around. The new professor looked like he'd be a load of fun (and from what he'd heard, was a load of fun), but he hadn't expected him to be so... shaggy.

Still, as Corbin took a seat in the front row and nodded a greeting to the Professor, he couldn't help but wonder what was going to happen. So far, nothing looked interesting.

Joshua had decided that he would not take his personal troubles into his classes. If he planned on leaving his seventh year anytime in the near future, he would try to at least smile and nod as if he was listening to what the professor was saying. Plus, he now had a secret weapon. He had already unleashed this special item on his Defense Against the Dark Arts class, but his sweet new ride was so incredible that it would be unfair for only one group of people to feast their eyes upon it.

As every cool wizard does, Joshua wheeled his way down the hall on his way to Muggle studies carrying a small black bag. How could he waste the opportunity to show the wizarding world just how cool muggle-borns could be? After all, his current whip had come from a muggle furniture paradise.

Thinking back to the time in which the chair was purchased, Joshua decided that he like to live in an IKEA. Life would be easier within such a magical place. He would never have to leave; there would always be food and water available to him. The other upside to living in an IKEA; no rent. His parents would have to call or visit him if they wanted to make sure that their son was still breathing. But who knew? Maybe they didn't care.

The sound of his wheels against the ground rang through the hall as he finally reached the Muggle Studies classroom. Being the intelligent individual that he was, Joshua almost fell face first into the door as he struggled to open it from his seated position. But because he was awesome as he was, the boy managed to enter the room without dying.

Clutching the pouch to his side, he wheeled over to where the ever-famous Corbin Henderson was sitting. In front of Corbin, sat a polaroid camera. Joshua smiled. He knew that he'd chosen the right day to ride a chair.

"Like my ride?" He asked Corbin. "It's IKEA."

Muggle studies seemed to be one the lessons where Hazel actually seemed to be good. She just knew few things about muggle world and those things she knew she even used them herself. She knew what was a phone and few other things around for sure. She was halfblood but she did spend some time in muggle world too. Since that was interesting there.

She walked into the classroom with a small smile on her face. She looked around the classroom for some empty seats. She soon enough found one and she took a seat there. "Oh, hello, professor," she said with a small smile on her face still. She seemed to be in good mood today.

She looked at the camera what was basically on her table there. She had never really used one like that before. She lately seems to use her phone camera when she wants to take pictures but she has seen one camera before for sure. She basically probably even knew how to use them.

Muggle studies. There was not a single letter in the name of this class that could possibly begin to convince Ambroise of this class's necessity. As a Pureblood, he lived in a world of constant magic. Every aspect of his world could be controlled by a wand without any need of intervention from the trivial inventions of muggles.

How could he be in need of a million single objects that were each devoted to a single purpose when he came from the world in which one single piece of wood could do an unimaginable amount of things at once.

He could not have begun to describe the objects that sat atop each of the tables. The board told the class that they would be talking about photography, meaning that these small boxes were cameras.

Muggle photography was one of the biggest jokes of the muggle world. They captured still images of things that wizard photography would capture in living colour. Why would he want to use inferior technology to obtain an inferior outcome?

He sat in the middle of the room, waiting to see how the teacher would sugar coat the work of the muggles.

Rebekah dreaded going to Muggle studies, but she promised both her mother and Zoey that she would attend the class this semester to learn more about the muggle world, being a half blood. She did not want to go, but she would end up doing it.

She slowly got out of bed and made her way to the classroom for the Muggle Studies lesson. She raised an eyebrow as she saw the muggle cameras and scoffed "Pictures? We are going to learn about taking pictures?" She rolled her eyes before scanning the classroom for people she knew.

She saw a few of her housemates, like Cade Sawyer, Cassieopia Mercer, and Toryn Callagham. She also saw that awful boy Ambroise Durand, who she just stuck her nose up at and continued to look. She smiled as her eyes landed on Zoey and she walked over to her friend and sat by her

As students began to trickle in, Blake couldn't help but marvel at the number of Purebloods taking the class, according to the roster of those who had signed up. There was that Richardson girl (he knew, naturally, about the Richardsons). The interaction from a fellow Muggleborn, though, caught his interest, and while he pretended to be fiddling with his camera, he was listening intently. Was there anything suspicious about it? No. It sounded more like a lover's quarrel than anything else.

More students came in, and Blake greeted those who greeted him with either a nod, a smile, or both. But then a Hufflepuff boy came in and Blake's instincts went off the moment the male looked at him. He'd seen looks like that before -- cold, calculating, sometimes intimidating -- but he'd never seen it from a (he went through the list of students quickly) fifth-year male. Mathew Howard, he noted, was someone to watch out for -- and never, under and circumstances, underestimate.

The following student made him chuckle inwardly; she had blushed, albeit lightly (but Blake was trained in human body language observation and hardly, if ever, missed anything). He'd have a field day telling Andi -- if he could get a letter to her -- although he was certain she'd take him down a notch.

And then, to his utmost amusement, an echoing squeak reached his ears and he glanced towards the door in time to see a Hufflepuff male enter in a ... chair. Blake watched, a single eyebrow raised, as he rolled over to a Slytherin.

"Next lesson, Abbott," Blake called out from his position on the desk, "Perhaps you'd like to give us a history on IKEA, since you seem to love their furniture so much? I mean, they do have pretty awesome stuff -- and equally weird things, too -- so, for extra credit, you could write me an essay on your favourite furniture in IKEA and why you like it."

The last few students arrived before Blake checked his watch and noted it was time to begin. From his position on the desk, he cleared his throat. "Good morning class. I'm your new Professor -- obviously; unless he (I?) took a polyjuice potion for whatever reason, although I don't see why I (he?) would. My name is Blake Mason. You can call me Professor Mason, Professor Blake, or Professor Whatever-the-heck-you-want. I'm not fussy."

He paused for a moment, then motion to the cameras on their tables. "Obviously, you already know that's a camera. To be more specific, it's a polaroid camera. What are differences between a normal digital camera, a non-digital camera, and a polaroid? One answer each. And for Merlin's sake, don't say 'one's digital and the other isn't' because that's just a lazy answer and I'm already providing it for you -- yes, I'm that lazy."

Zoey smiled as the lesson began. She was actually really excited to be learning about this subject. Even though she knew a bit about cameras, it would be interesting to learn the more in depth details of the camera.

When their professor introduced himself she giggled a bit "Professor whatever the heck we want?" She asked mumbling under her breath as she did so. This professor was funny, she had a feeling she would enjoy the class. Even Rebekah might enjoy. She looked over at her friend, who naturally, was the last to arrive before the lesson had started.

She smiled before turning back to Professor Mason when he asked a question. She thought for a moment before raising her hand "Digital cameras provide a playback option to show the taker the picture they just took. If they dont like it, they can simply delete it and try again. You do not get that with Non digital cameras."

As more students arrived, Stephanie began to feel rather self-conscious and awkward. Would people question why she was attending the very class she dissed? Would anyone notice that the high and mighty Pureblood - who made sure none of her friends associated with Muggleborns if they wanted to stay friends - was now attending Muggle Studies? It was no well-kept secret that Stephanie Richardson did not associate herself with anything to do with Muggles. At least she knew that none of her "friends" would be here. That brought her some comfort. She wouldn't have to explain her presence in this class to them.

There was only one person she hoped would feel like taking a leave of absence for this particular class.

Unfortunately, things did not always turn out the way she hoped.

The moment her ears registered her name said in that familiar voice, her heart sank and her face heated up. This, if not anything else, was embarrassing. She kept her eyes down as he fumbled over his words - something that surprised her. Was he going to tease her? Mock her? Ask her why she was here when she'd been so adamant in her dislike for his kind?

But then she heard the word "apologise" and her head shot up, eyes locking onto his, wide with shock. He was...apologising? Of all things he could've said or done, he wanted to say sorry? Too stunned to come up with a reply, Stephanie's gaze followed him to his seat as she tried to digest what had just happened.

If it had been about any other subject than the one they'd discussed so heatedly, she would've expected an apology. She would never let anyone talk to her the way he did and get away with it. In fact, she'd made many people apologise to her when she felt they did not treat her with the respect she deserved. But Toryn? Toryn had a point in his argument - the whole reason she was here. Sure, the way he'd spoken to her was unacceptable, but what he had said was a whole other matter, and Stephanie didn't think he had to apologise for that.

The unprofessional-looking professor started the class, but Stephanie's gaze remained glued to the back of Toryn's head, her mind whirling with so many thoughts that she completely missed everything the professor had said. It wasn't until a girl spoke up that she shook herself out of her stupor and listened. She hadn't heard the question but could guess from the Ravenclaw's answer that it had to do with the different types of cameras. Since she didn't really know that much, Stephanie kept quiet.

This new professor appeared to be someone with whom Joshua would get along with rather well. He seemed casual, yet not too casual whereas he'd be too invested in being the good guy to actually show the class that he was the teacher. The Hufflepuff had encountered the "I'm just like you, dude" professor before. It was not as effective an approach as one would assume. But this guy seemed to know that he was the boss. And he seemed to want the rest of the class to know this as well.

"I would be honoured to hand in such an assignment," Joshua told him, putting a hand over his heart in order to show that this was a statement of genuine sincerity. After showing his appreciation to the professor, the boy felt an impact on his shoulder, more than likely caused by the Slytherin sitting next to him.

"What the hell, Henderson?" He asked, momentarily turning his attention from the professor to his friend-ish-person, Corbin Henderson.

"You may want to let the professor teach the lesson, Abbott," Corbin stated, a smug expression on his face that Joshua assumed was meant to hide his satisfaction with Joshua's actions. "That is his job, as long as you haven't driven him to an early retirement."

Joshua laughed at the male. He'd taken in exactly none of what Corbin had said, yet did the Hufflepuff ever actually pay attention to what others said?"

"Oh shut up," He said. "You know you love me." Joshua's eyes grew as if this joke of a statement had actually sparked an idea in the boy's mind. "In fact," he began.

With a sigh, Joshua left the comfort of his chair and lowered himself to the floor. From this position, he nonchalantly whispered an Accio charm towards one of the female students' hands. A small ring flew into his grip and the boy held it firmly in front of Corbin Henderson.

"Corbin I-do-not-know-your-middle-name Henderson," He began, a fake tear building up in his eyes. "I know that it has been only a short while that we have known each other, but it feels as though I have known you for a lifetime. I love you, Corbin and I want to frolick together in our chairs forever."

A part of him felt sorry for the professor, having to deal with this bullshit on his first day. But Joshua was nothing if not a handful. He smiled to the professor. Maybe he'd write the IKEA paper just for the sake of not being a complete disappointment.

'Late,' she thought, panic erupting from inside of her heart. Julienne rushed quietly throughout the castle, her feet light as she rushed to the Muggle Studies classroom. She'd gotten the time wrong. Her mind had recalled the class as being an hour later than it realistically was and the girl had not realised this until minutes after the class had begun.

'Everyone is going to notice,' She told herself. She would open the door to the class and be greeted by the gazes of her classmates who had come into the room on time. They would judge her inability to read simple details, such as the time in which a class was set to begin.

Slowly, Julienne pushed the door to the Muggle Studies classroom open, her heart beating quickly as she anticipated the ridicule that was about to come towards her.

But there was nothing.

Instead, the main attraction of the class was a boy that she recognised as being a seventh year who belonged to the same house as she. He was on one knee, supposedly proposing to a boy whom she had never seen before. Part of her knew that this must have been a joke, but there did appear to be a hint of honesty in the Hufflepuff boy's eyes. She doubted that the other classmates would see this.

Carefully, Julienne snuck into the back of the classroom and took a seat next to a polaroid camera. She allowed herself to sigh in relief as she focused her attention on the professor. She wondered how he would react to the public display of affection.

Mathew's thoughts on the subject had been correct, as only shortly after he'd entered the classroom did Roxanne enter the room. She did not lay eyes on him, but did, instead, sit before Mathew. Just about close enough to touch... if he so wished.

He did not move to do so, though, instead, his eyes moved from their original location, to the auburn locks of the witch before him. He did not mind that she had not acknowledged him, it meant he could watch more easily.

Though, of course, should the Ravenclaw turn, Mathew's eyes would have averted subtly before she could catch him.

There was commotion with another Hufflepuff boy - the kind of Hufflepuff that Mathew was more than willing to deal with should he continue - but Mathew paid him no attention. Unfortunately, the professor - whom Mathew didn't believe to be adequate to the job - acknowledged the stupid behaviour, which could only lead to more of it. And, even as Mathew thought that much, it happened.

The drama continued, and, beneath the desk, Mathew pulled out his wand. Thinking of the Pus-squirting hex, Mathew willed it quite hard - which would invariably make it a very severe case of the spell's effects. There was a loud bang that filled the room, so all they could do was wait.

Mathew, meanwhile, returned his wand to his pocket - with very subtle, unnoticeable movements. His features turned to faux concern as if he did not know what had happened. But, before another ruckus could occur.

"A Polaroid camera is a camera that prints photos in the instant they are taken on to a piece of paper. You usually have to shake the paper to help it develop. You can't delete, or edit these pictures on the device. They just are." Mathew explained, his tone even, with little interest in the subject, but he knew the answer.

OOC: Jake was granted permission to send the spell at Joshua. FYI - there is no beam of light, or incantation, and Mathew did this subtly, as not to cause anyone to be suspicious. Please PM me if you want to work with this point further.

Elleon walked into the room, his hand already holding the piece of paper with his usual note on it. Hi, I'm Elleon Caverly. I'm Deaf. When you speak, could you please face the front of the class so I can read your lips? Thank you. He'd heard that they were going to have a new teacher for Muggle Studies and had prepared the note ahead of time. He gave the note to the professor with a smile and waited, expecting a nod and a smile in return. What he did not expect was for him to sign.

"Hi, E-l-l-e-o-n. I speak little BSL. Can talk but not understand a lot. Sorry."

Elleon was so surprised that he remained silent for a while. Once it registered that the professor had actually spoken to him in sign language, Elleon broke out into a grin. He didn't fault the professor at all for not being able to understand well. He knew some Hearing people who also had trouble with their receptive skills. It was enough that the professor knew BSL, even if just a little.

"It's okay. My name, Elleon," he responded, introducing the professor to his name sign and going very slowly.

After settling his things on the desk, he spotted the polaroid camera in front of him, eyes lighting up in excitement. He loved photography, the artist in him always looking out for the perfect moment to capture and keep forever. It fascinated him how one second of a person's life could be etched into a picture that lasted for such a long time. He had a camera of his own - not a polaroid - which he used when he wanted to capture a moment and paint or draw it later.

The professor started the class and Elleon frowned, already feeling a headache coming on. He hadn't expected the professor to interpret everything he spoke, considering his limited knowledge of sign language, but he also didn't expect for him to speak like that. He was very hard to read from the way he rambled on, and Elleon found himself rather lost trying to keep up with the pace of his speech. There was something about a potion, and the repeated word of professor. Was he trying to say that he'd taught potions before? Things only got a little better and he managed to make out a few words of the professor's question, filling in the blanks for the words he missed. The rest after that was a big jumble. He'd have to write the professor another note requesting that he speak slower.

But before he could do that, the professor began signing and Elleon watched, surprise showing in his eyes. The grammar wasn't perfect and he fingerspelled big words like polaroid, digital, and non-digital, but it was enough for Elleon to follow what he was saying.

"I'm new teacher, unless old teacher drank p-o-l-y-j-u-i-c-e potion."

Oh, so that's what he meant by the potion. Already, Elleon liked his sense of humour.

"Call me Professor M-a-s-o-n, B-l-a-k-e, or whatever. What difference polaroid, digital, and non-digital camera have?"

From the position he was sitting in, he couldn't really make out what Zoey said (he finally learned that Zoey was her name, not Chloe or Joey), but a movement caught his eye and he turned his head to see Professor Blake interpreting for him. Elleon really did not expect for him to go to such lengths and it only made him like Professor Blake more. He signed a "thank you" to Professor Blake before opening up his sketchbook.

Turning to a clean page, Elleon began to write his answer, lifting it up for the professor to see once he was done.

A non-digital camera relies on a film roll which is then later developed into pictures. This is usually done in a darkroom.

Although he really appreciated what Professor Blake did, signing out his answer would take too long as he would have to go really slowly and fingerspell almost everything if he wanted to be understood. It was just better to write it out.

PostSubject: Re: Muggle Studies: Lesson 1 (All Years)   Thu May 18, 2017 9:51 am

He'd spent a month or so undercover at a place that taught BSL (he was tracking a suspected squib sleeper agent) and picked up some basic things during said month. At the bare minimum, he could fingerspell fluently -- although not as fluently as a Deaf person could -- and knew basic sentences that would help. So, after speaking each phrase (and after each student gave their answer), Blake spent some time interpreting (not translating; Deaf culture and terminology was one of the first few things he learnt) it for Elleon. It was clunky and he had to fingerspell a lot of the time, but he hoped it was enough.

He'd have to take a course during the summer to improve. They offered those kind of classes, didn't they?

"Five points to Ravenclaw," he said, at the first answer given. "That is correct; you can view the images you take in digital cameras."

But then, before much of the class had a chance to answer, the Hufflepuff with the chair obsession was ... proposing? Blake's expression turned into a smirk as he watched what was obviously a joke taking place. Was he annoyed at the interruption? No. Was he amused? Definitely.

He watched as the Slytherin accepted the proposal in a manner not quite as dramatic as it had been delivered, and then cleared his throat. He was about to make a comment when he heard the explosion; reacting automatically, he glanced around, wand already in hand.

The pus was obvious, and Blake didn't even hesitate, flicking his wand in Joshua's direction. The pus was cleared up almost at once, leaving no trace of it behind. Another flick cleared up any remains on the floor or table, and then Blake slid his wand back into his pocket and glanced around. It had been done non-verbally, and obviously in spite.

Who was it? He hadn't seen any movements... His eyes fell on Mathew for but a moment before he let his gaze continue. There was something about the boy that read as off, as dangerous, and Blake didn't discount his instincts for a moment. There was no proof it was the male, and Blake wasn't going to even try and accuse him, but he couldn't help but think that, if it was anyone in the room, it was Mathew.

He ignored the answer given and turned to Joshua once more. "If you could give the ring back to its rightful owner, that would be much appreciated. Next time, I suggest purchasing the ring yourself; it's much easier that way." He paused for a moment, and then added, "Congratulations, by the way. I expect an invitation to the wedding."

Then and only then did he nod towards Mathew. "Take five points for that answer. That's the fun with polaroid cameras; the pictures appear at once and are printed out at once. It's got to do with light and dye and chemicals and things that we won't get into, mostly because I can't understand it. Maybe it's even magic. I don't know. All we know is we press the button and out pops the thing. A few minutes later, we have a picture."

The last and complete answer came from Elleon, and he nodded. "Good. Hufflepuff earns another five points." He paused, then read out the answer. "This is put perfectly. Are you sure you didn't copy that from wikipedia?" he joked, translating it to bad BSL before continuing. "I won't go into details of darkrooms today, but basically, they're a place you develope the pictures on film. It's technical and sciency and I'm not Bill Nye -- and all you muggleborns who don't know this, shame on you -- so I'll not bother trying."

"Next class, we'll try out digital cameras. This class, though, we will practise taking pictures on polaroid cameras," Blake went on. "Now, this is how it works." He picked up the camera, pointing to different parts as he spoke. "This is the on button. Press it once to turn it on. The lens will come out. Aim it at what you want to take a picture of, and look through the small hole. What you see is what you get. Make sure your fingers aren't covering the flash or the lens."

He moved the camera slightly, as though randomly choosing a location. In actuality, he was making sure that Mathew was directly in frame and unhidden, although not the only one in the picture. "Once you've got what you want, press this button; the flash is bright." He demonstrated, and then removed the piece of plastic that came out the bottom, placing it face down on his desk.

"Now, as Mathew pointed out, sometimes you shake the picture to help it. Do not do it this time. I repeat: do not do it! This brand doesn't need shaking; if you shake it, it will be less bright or sharp. Lay it flat down, photo down, for a minute or so."

He paused, making sure everyone got that, and then went on. "You each have ten film. That means each camera holds twenty pieces of film. In groups of two or three, practise taking pictures." Blake took out his wand and gave it a wave; in the corner of the room, objects that he'd hidden were revealed -- random costumes and other dress-up items. "Have fun. Out of the ten, you may keep nine. On the back of one picture of anything, write your name and date it. This will be your classwork."

Picking up the picture he'd taken earlier, he glanced at it and smiled. It came out how he wanted, with Mathew in the corner, and other students around as well; he'd send it back to his team leader with a note asking for them to perform a background check on Mathew. Holding it up for the class to see, he said, "This is how it should look like. Now shoo. Have fun."
