The Sound of Silence (Tess) Empty
PostSubject: The Sound of Silence (Tess)   The Sound of Silence (Tess) EmptyMon Oct 16, 2017 2:27 am

Clara had enjoyed a relaxing break. Her family didn't do too much for the holidays, but she'd gotten several new books for Christmas, which she was currently working through. She'd managed to finish three out of five before the break ended, and was almost done with the fourth.

They'd only been back for a few days, so classes weren't too strenuous yet. The holiday spirit was just beginning to wear off. Clara sat in her usual place in the library, doing a little leisure reading at one of the tables. She also had with her two books on magical artifacts, which she was planning to check out when she left. Their latest Ancient Runes class had piqued her interest in the subject, so she'd decided to learn more on her own time.

The library wasn't as busy as it usually was. She was one of maybe three or four students in the studying area, and all of them were working quietly by themselves. She lightly kicked the leg of her chair as she hunched over Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, her cheek leaning against her fist. She only had forty pages left. Then she could start her research on Ancient Runes and magical artifacts, and hopefully learn something before dinner.

The school was back in session and for once Tess couldn't be any happier at that. During the break, she went to multiple balls hosted by so many pureblood families. There she wined and dined pretending to show interest in the men available who wished to possibly be her suitor. It seemed highly pompous of her to scowl when a compliment went her way, yet she felt more like a trophy after every ball. Her own one was atrocious as well with her feet hurting more than she caed to admit. But with her sixteenth birthday celebration over, she could now concentrate on doing what she did best: hiding within the shadows.

The Library had been one of her favorite locations since she moved to Hogwarts. She enjoyed the large selection, the quietness and the way people only came here for the same purpose: to read.

Smiling slightly at the thought she walked through the aisled attempting to figure out what to read. She refused to look for Elenore and bother her, so finding a book was the next best thing. When a book of zoology caught her attention, she stopped and slightly caressed the spine of the book, mulling over taking it or not. Her gently nudged seemed to accidentally push the book through the other side making a noise as it fell. She winced. Why was she so clumsy?! Before rushing off, she found herself moving to the proper aisle and find the book.

Clara looked up at the telltale thump and rustle of a book hitting the floor. Glancing to her right, she saw the book in question lying on the ground in front of its shelf, its cover open and pages bent beneath it. Through the space it had once occupied, she saw a flash of movement.

Moving automatically, she stood and wandered over to the book, bending down and picking it up. She straightened the pages and closed the cover, brushing it off gently. Magizoology, she gathered from the title. Not a subject she was particularly interested in, but a book was a book, and all books were to be handled with care. She held it gingerly in both hands, and looked to her left to see who had dropped it.

From the brief flash she had seen through the space in the shelf, she guessed someone must have accidentally pushed it off, and was probably coming around to pick it up. Unsure of what to do, Clara simply stood there with the book in hand, and waited for the person to arrive so she could give it to them.

She supposed she could probably just put it back on the shelf, but then whoever it was would come looking for it, and would probably be confused when it wasn't on where they thought it would be. So Clara looked toward the end of the row of shelves, waiting a few seconds for the person to round the corner.

Clumsiness was not something that she thought herself to be; yet there she was, wondering if there were any more socially awkward things for her to do. She was supposed to be graceful and gentle, but her eagerness ended up being just embarrassing. For a brief moment, she considered rushing off, and she actually took a few steps...that is until the curiosity of the subject made her stop.

'You can't leave that book behind Tess, it's very disrespectful' she thought shamefully.

Biting her lip she turned to the next aisle. She figured that no one would be in this corner, that is until she found another girl. Her cheeks instantly flushed at being caught in a graceless moment. Tugging the ends of her hair she smiled shyly.

"I do apologize for bothering you, but that's my book" she murmured. She hoped that this could be as painless as possible, but she had seen the girl if only a few times and only in classes.

Oh, it's the new girl, Clara thought as she laid eyes on the student. She'd seen her before in a couple classes, but only this year, and they'd never spoken. She was slightly older, if she remembered correctly, and French, judging by her accent.

The girl looked...embarrassed? That would make sense, she decided. She'd accidentally knocked a book off the shelf, and then was caught in the act of retrieving it. That was a reasonably embarrassing situation.

The girl smiled, but it was small, and Clara was fairly certain that she wasn't happy. It was weird when people smiled when they weren't happy, but apparently it was polite to pretend to be happy just to make other people comfortable. Clara didn't really understand it, but she was aware of it, and she assumed that was probably what was happening right now.

As the girl apologized and claimed the book as hers, Clara nodded and held it out toward her.

"I know," she said simply. She'd already deduced what had happened, she wasn't sure why the older girl felt the need to explain, much less apologize. "Don't apologize, you didn't do anything to me. I picked it up because I wanted to, and I was intending to return it to you."

The moment that her smile was not reciprocated, Tess' smile slowly dimmed. The girl in front of her was clearly not amused and could not bother to even play to social niceties. And for the first time in her life, she wasn't sure exactly how to react to this. Tugging the strand of hair behind her ear, she briefly replayed the scene in her head. Had she done a faux pas? No she hadn't.

'Well then, honey over vinegar' as her brother would always say. Another charming smile was sent towards the young girl.

"Don't apologize, you didn't do anything to me. I picked it up because I wanted to, and I was intending to return it to you."

"Well...thank you" she said softly and took the book delicately from the younger girl's hands. "I was merely apologizing for the bothersome incident but...it is no matter" she tilted her head.

"You're in my classes yes? I'm Tess" she said so politely. "Other than the books, why the library?"

"You're welcome," Clara said. Such was the proper response to the phrase 'thank you,' as dictated by social norms. She shrugged as the older girl explained her apology. She hadn't found the incident especially bothersome--she could have easily chosen not to get up from her seat, after all. It was her own fault that she'd gotten involved at all. She would have said as much, but the girl seemed to have moved on already.

"I...yes. I'm Clara," she replied when Tess introduced herself. She hadn't really expected to engage in a conversation with the girl--she'd just thought she'd give the book back and that'd be the end of it; they'd go their separate ways, and she'd return to reading without a second thought. But Tess apparently wanted to talk for some reason, despite the fact that they didn't know each other.

"Other than the books, why the library?"

Clara blinked at the sudden change in subject. Now they were making small talk? It took her a moment to switch gears, the question not really making sense to her previous mindset, which had not expected a question at all.

"Um...it's quiet, I suppose. I wouldn't know where else to go."

After a long, awkward pause, the thought occurred to her that maybe she was supposed to reciprocate the question, or ask one of her own. But why? I don't have any questions for her that I care to know the answers to...it will just make the conversation last longer, which is not my goal.

Her mother's voice nagged at the back of her mind. Be polite, don't make people feel bad after talking to you.

She racked her brain for a suitable question that might actually interest her. May as well make the most of the situation, and satisfy whatever curiosity she might have. What did she want to know?

"Why did you move here from France?" She finally settled on. On second thought, was that too out of the blue? Well, she'd already said it, too late now.

Tess could call herself many things, but a social butterfly was definitely not a quality she possessed. The idea of small talk would usually have something eerie crawl up her back, but this time that was not the case. She had never met someone less antisocial than her, and she had to admit that she was a bit intrigued. This time around though, she figured she could try. The small smile that would usually prompt more interaction did not work and she didn't know exactly what to do.

But when the girl looked a bit uncomfortable, Tess felt that it was best to let it go. Just grab the book and go, you're embarrassing yourself' she thought horrified. Still when Clara actually introduced herself Tess found herself smiling. It was a small one that soon turned a bit more genuine as the girl explained why she was there. She too loved the library and Tess found herself curious.

That is, until the question came out of the blue. It was not necessarily unexpected, but the way it was mentioned surprised her more than anything. She supposed there was nothing to be embarrassed about, it was clear she recently moved so she found herself simply taking it in stride, and answering the question.

"I-I moved because my father is involved in politics here in Great Britain; he thought it suited me best to be in this environment, especially at my age. I've seen you in class before yes?"

Clara cocked her head at the girl's explanation. "Well, I suppose it is reasonable for a politician to want to introduce his daughter to new cultures, especially the one in which he works...and your teen years are the best for learning without necessarily assimilating. You'd familiarize yourself with Britain, but you're old enough to retain your loyalty to France, having already formed connections there." She was really just reasoning it out for herself, making sense of it in her head. Doing it out loud simply allowed her to solidify her thoughts, and perhaps gain confirmation--she was sure Tess didn't need to hear this, she probably already knew her father's reasoning.

"Yes, we had Ancient Runes together," she confirmed. "I don't think I've seen you in any other classes...you're a year older, and that's where most professors tend to split their curricula. Though, personally, I don't see how the 'advanced' curriculum would be too difficult for a fourth year student...of course, I'm not acquainted with too many other fourth year students, perhaps I overestimate them."

Was she rambling? Probably. The older girl probably didn't care much about her opinion on the matter...then again, Tess had been the one to attempt to strike up a conversation, so it was really her own fault.

Tess didn't really know what to expect, but as Clara began to really delve into the logistics of her move she was taken aback by the sheer information being emitted from the younger girl. There was some logic to it and she was not too far off. The first mention of the loyalty to France was correct, her heart belonged in France and if she was ever forced into a marriage she hoped her future husband's love of France was there, or he respected her enough to do that. It was a haunting that she was now in that age range were it was a serious thing to think about.

"I....well it is important that I get involved in the British politics of today. A lot of political movements are in Britain and my father's position is the best"

She was honest in her statement, but she would not go into too many details in the reality of the move, but it was in the background of her mind.

"I am impressed by how easily you dull down the lesson plans as them being a bit beneath you." if she wasn't a bit defensive she would have had a little more tact. "You find yourself to be very intelligent don't you...is it the fact you are in Ravenclaw? Or just you?" There was no malice in the last question, just genuine curiosity.
