Teacher Orientation? [Jake] Empty
PostSubject: Teacher Orientation? [Jake]   Teacher Orientation? [Jake] EmptyWed Aug 02, 2017 12:48 am

Andrei missed Marie and his kids already. It had only been earlier that morning that they had said their tearful goodbyes before his train rolled off from the station, but it felt like a lifetime away to the man as he stepped off the train onto the eerily familiar Hogsmeade platform. The trip itself had been uneventful; he caught up on the news he had neglected to read the day before because Helen needed new school clothes and he slept or rather he tried to sleep—every time he felt his head begin to grow heavy the train would jolt or the noisy kids in the next compartment would screech about something or another. Suffice to say he was not in the best of moods.

Yet, upon reaching the crossroads that led to Hogwarts, as so often happens to a man about open a new chapter in his life, he temporarily forgot about his old woes. Each step brought back memories of his time at the famed school for witches and wizards. His first kiss by the lake, the time he got hit by a muting spell, and, of course, the small group of friends he used to play chess with on the weekends. All these memories and more began to blur together to such an extent that the man was surprised when he looked up and found himself at his destination, Hogwarts.

The school looked as timeless as ever. As a student, he hadn't really appreciated the beauty of the place with its sloping arches, tall spires, and looming gargoyles. However, now, walking through the grounds he found himself in awe of the school's unique architecture and picturesque landscape. There really was no place on earth like Hogwarts and, in realizing this, he felt the cool tingle of excitement run down his spine.

The childlike excitement only swelled and swelled as he made his way to what he knew to be the staff room and in spite of himself butterflies fluttered around madly in his stomach. He had always wondered what the staff room looked like, but he had never expected something so, for lack of a better word, boring. The door closed soundlessly behind him and he found himself alone in a deafening silence unique to schools nearing the summer time.

All at once any excitement he had evaporated only to be replaced with his old woes once more. Somethings are never quite as magical once you have seen their inner workings; looking at the exceptionally normal staff room Andrei had a sinking feeling this would be the case at Hogwarts. So far it seemed like this job was going to be like any other, work. Not that he minded work, but he had expected something...different?

Shurgging to himself he fell into one of the larger armchairs allowing his earthtone robes to billow around him. Pulling the worn leather breifcase he had with him onto his lap he rifled through it for bit before finding and removing a map he had been given upon being hired. In his years as a student he hadn't taken much time to know every nook and crany of the castle, but now, as a teacher, he felt it his duty to do so.

Step one, he furrowed his brow every so slightly and looked down at the map, find my classroom.

PostSubject: Re: Teacher Orientation? [Jake]   Teacher Orientation? [Jake] EmptyWed Aug 02, 2017 6:00 pm

Summer was nearing, which meant two things to Jake, he'd have more time for his children who were in desperate need of more of their father's time now more than ever, but also, he would be leaving his students. Jake had always been a devoted teacher, always pushing students to their potential so that they could grow in to well rounded young individuals.

Jake didn't like the thought of summer like many teachers did. Whilst many of them were ready for the break, Jake would miss the faces of his students, but, he supposed, for the most part, he would see them again.

However, as Jake made his way to the staff room, his mind was not on the students. His mind was on Ivan. Come September his eldest child would be starting pre-school, there was a lot to think about. And, Adrienne... Adrienne was getting better with her talking every day. His mom was doing a great job, helping him out, and Jake could not have been more grateful, but he needed to be with his children. He was their father, and he was going to make sure the summer was spent spoiling them rotten with the extra time he had with not being at the school.

Turning in to the staff room, Jake headed straight for the refreshments, getting himself a cup of tea, and adding a few grains of sugar -- it was becoming habit now, to add just a small amount of sugar, barely enough to make a difference, but enough to give him the idea he was giving himself a sugar boost. After all, you didn't keep yourself in shape by not watching the intake of food you took.

It was as Jake turned, leaning back against the counter that he noted someone else in the room. The man before him was not one of the professors he recognised, though he had heard that there were a few new faces coming on board. Never one to shy away from conversation, Jake moved to take a seat on the sofa opposite the man and cleared his throat softly.

"Hi there." He greeted the man, his Auror senses peaking a little bit -- just in case -- because a new face was not always a good thing. "I'm Jake, Jake Newbury, I don't think we've met before... Are you going to be one of the replacement teachers for next term?" He asked, his features friendly, as always, though his mind was alert. "Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, personally."

Jake added the last, simply to put him in place for the man before him. It was what it was, and there wasn't really anything more to add to that really.

"Can I help you..?" Jake continued, motioning to the map the other man was holding. Hogwarts was quite a confusing place, but Jake supposed that was because he was American, schooled at Salem Academy, and coming to Hogwarts without the luxury of growing up within the castle walls.

Tracing a route with his index finger, Andrei did not hear anyone enter the staff room or if he did he showed no sign of it. In fact, it was only the mention of a familiar name, Jake Newbury, that he even bothered to look up from the map with an apologetic smile. Folding up the map and putting it to the side to give the man across from his full attention, Andrei looked upon a person he had only read about in the papers.

“Yes, yes I am,” he replied, matching Jake’s friendly tone. “Andrei Kessler, I’ll be taking over for Cynthia Blackwater as the new Ancient Runes professor next term.”

He paused slightly as he so often did when deciding the appropriate way to proceed.

“Though,” his tone shifted sharply to mild disbelief. “Surely I misheard you. You’d be far better suited to being a flying instructor, no?”

Andrei didn’t much like American Quidditch teams. They had, as of late, a bad habit of showing up the English teams he rooted for in any international tournament or expedition. However, his dislike did not preclude him from reading anything and everything he could get his hands on about the teams across the pond. And, while a bit dated, the name Jake Newbury stood out in his memory for the splash he made in the media.

“As for help,” he continued along fluidly. “I remember most of the castle from my time here as a student. That said perhaps you could refresh my memory just a bit. I seem to recall there being a secret passageway from the second floor to the fifth, but I can’t, for the life of me, remember where it was…Anything to avoid those godforsaken stairs.”

He offered a weak smile with his last remark. Andrei could not count the number of times he had been late to class as a student because the stairs decided it would be a good idea to go to the seventh floor instead of the third.

Jake smiled at the man as he introduced himself as the new Ancient Runes professor -- honestly, he'd never really been too good with that subject, and he didn't really know how to hold a conversation on the subject. Jake had, however, seen the Cursebreakers at work, and he had to say it was quite something to behold. Though, definitely not his own forte.

"Very nice!" Jake commented upon the other man's conclusion on how he would be taking over from one of Jake's current colleagues. "Well, best of luck. You will be in for a lot of fun, that's for sure. The kids are great, there are a couple of rule breakers, but for the most part, they're a good bunch."

Though, of course, Jake believed himself to be lucky, because he had a thoroughly engaging working environment that seemed to keep the kids on course. He couldn't be quite so sure that Ancient Runes would be quite as enthralling, but he was open to the possibility of being wrong, of course.

The comment that came forth in respect of Jake's own teaching job brought a wry smile to the man's lips. He knew what the other man was getting at, and knew the logic. "Perhaps it might have been, eight or nine years ago." Jake replied, not offended in the slightest. "I was, for a time. But, my true calling has, and always be, in the defence against dark arts. As an Auror now, I think we can both agree that I'd be of more use doing DADA."

The explanation might not be enough, but that was all there was to it, really.

The question of a hidden passageway from the second floor to the fifth floor. Jake frowned slightly, before giving a small shrug in answer. "Truthfully... I don't go past the third floor..." Jake admitted, before considering once more. "I know there is a passageway from the ground floor to the second floor hidden behind some tapestries, is that the one you mean?" Jake asked, though his tone denoted he didn't really know himself. The passageways Jake had left to the students, deciding he'd rather not come across some loved up teenagers whilst trying to find a shortcut.

No, they were 'secret' for a reason, and Jake was fine with the stairs.

"Ah. Oh well," he shrugged at the lack of information on the secret passageway. "I guess I'll have to do some exploring then."

Secrets, in Andrei's opinion, were there to discovered and uncovered. Perhaps it had to do with his line of work. For him there was a certain thrill to the investigation followed by the final reveal; it was one of the few things in life that really got his blood pumping and mind working.

"That's respectable though," he admitted referencing Jake's preference for defense against the dark arts. "It's rare nowadays to meet someone who is pursuing their true calling in life. "

He wanted to press Jake for more information about his Quidditch days but thought better of it. This wasn't the time for such things. Were he younger and his curiosity not so tempered by his cautious nature, he certainly would have unleashed a torrent of questions, but this was not the case. So, he reigned in his curiosity and contented himself with fact that he would have the entirety of the coming school year to tease out the information he so wanted.

"As to the the students," his face reddened ever so slightly and he leaned forward as if to confide a well-kept secret. "I'll be honest with you I don't have an overwhelming amount of teaching experience, do you have any pointers?"

Among many things, age taught Andrei to not be afraid to ask for help even if it is from the younger generation. He had made the mistake of not asking for help in his undergraduate studies and, much to his mortification, failed a class. The next semester he attended every office hours available and continued to do so throughout his academic career. He reasoned that sacrificing a bit of evanescent pride for ultimate success was a more than worthwhile trade.

"Exploring, or ask the students... if you can find any that you trust not to send you in to the girl's toilets, or something equally as embarrassing." Jake mused with a soft laugh. Of course, being thirty he didn't care if he accidentally stumbled in to the girl's loos -- he'd turn straight back around and head off in another direction -- but teenagers thought this was the height of hilarity, and Jake couldn't remember if he'd ever found something so trivial that funny.

The rarity of following his dreams made Jake give a small smile to the other man. A light hue of red touched his cheeks, but the beard that covered them did enough to hide it. "Thank you, but, truly, I was just lucky to get a second chance." Jake replied, not elaborating on the point, but making sure Andrei knew it wasn't quite so spectacular as the older man might believe.

"The students..." Jake mused, thinking over it. "I have always found them to be good if you come across more as the firm but fair professor. Though, in truth, I don't ask them to call me professor, I ask them to call me Jake. Not all of them listen, but it makes me more approachable, I think.

"Truthfully, just keep them entertained. Bored children are very problematic, and they play up when you're not keeping them occupied." Jake continued, pausing for a moment. "I would also recommend starting your first lesson off with a bang. Capture their attention from day one, make it clear from day one that you're in charge, and they normally don't bother you. We're quite lucky here, there are very few children who don't enjoy the school and all it has to offer."

Jake finished with a small nod to show he was done. There wasn't much else he had to add to that.

"So, have you done work in the field? Or... just an avid Runes reader?" Jake asked, hoping it was the former, because the latter would not be at all exciting, and the kids most certainly needed excitement to keep their interest.

Teacher Orientation? [Jake] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Teacher Orientation? [Jake]   Teacher Orientation? [Jake] EmptyThu Aug 10, 2017 2:09 am

Nodding along with Jake, Andrei took careful mental notes. He hadn’t necessarily told the whole truth; he had taught before. Of course, he had no malicious intent in hiding this fact from the man across from him, but every time he talked about his time teaching at a muggle university people looked at him strangely as if he were some strange animal that they couldn’t quite understand. Suffice to say he did not much like that look, so it was much easier to breeze over the fact by, if he mentioned anything at all, saying he taught in ‘university’.

Plus, he knew, vaguely, that teaching in the university was different. As a teacher in university it was his job to present materials, but here at Hogwarts he understood he would have to teach the materials. There was, in his mind, a difference between presenting and teaching. He planned to take Jake’s advice and undertake a shock and awe approach to teaching—he had just the demonstration in mind.

“A bit of both,” he responded with a wave of his hand. “I started my career as a translator and nothing more, but you know how it goes.”

He smiled bashfully—Andrei knew he had, thus far, lived a blessed professional life.

“One moment you’re sitting in your office deciphering a Slavic text and the next you get an owl that you’re needed on-site. It all happened rather quickly, but I can’t rightly say I regret a minute of it as it allowed me to travel the world and see sights I’d only read about in books. I spent a few years in Egypt, a few in Hong Kong, and more than a few in Russia.”

People always seemed to think that ancient runes were confined to the Egyptian culture. Personally, Andrei found such an assumption strange as while Egyptian runes were a large portion of the field they were still only a portion. Magical cultures the world over used runes in their own unique ways. And it was such uniqueness that kept the older man coming back for more each and every time he thought he’d seen it all.

“Thankfully, I never found myself under the yoke of Gringotts,” Andrei hated the Curse Breakers employed by the bank, they were only after profit and plunder not true discovery. “I like to think of myself as more of a scholar than a treasure hunter. But that’s enough about me, what about yourself? Surely, balancing the life of an Auror and a teacher is a hard one, no?”

Teacher Orientation? [Jake] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Teacher Orientation? [Jake]   Teacher Orientation? [Jake] EmptySat Aug 12, 2017 4:24 pm

It was, probably, understandable that the man before him had spent time learning the runes from a book for a time before stepping in to the field. That was, after all, the safest way to do it, dealing with real Runes as a newbie would be quite disastrous, Jake imagined.

"Russia?" Jake asked, looking more than a little surprised by that country being named in the field of Ancient Runes -- though, he had to admit to himself, his studies on Runes were more than likely distracted by a rather attractive brunette at the time, and therefore he didn't really remember doing very much studying on the subject in the end.

"I'd never have put that on the Ancient Runes maps, truthfully. But, I'm sure that's quite different to the runes you found in Egypt. Both places sound like quite interesting places to go. Though, obviously, you have to go quite careful in Russia, or, so I've heard." Jake replied, thinking about it for a moment. With two children, he doubted either plan would come in to fruition just yet, but maybe one day he could take them both on an educational tour.

The comment on Gringotts brought a small smile to Jake's lips. He knew the complaints of his own division of the Curse Breakers from Gringotts. Personally, though, Jake had no qualms with them, or their job. After all, he was not one to judge others.

"Auror, teacher and father. Though, I wouldn't rank them in that order." Jake corrected the man gently, before giving a small smile that probably showed just how tired he was from trying to balance that. "Recently made single father, actually. As to how I balance it... with difficulty, but I wouldn't change it for the world. My parents have been a great help with it all, but... I should probably think about what I'm doing a little more. I love both of my jobs, though. I'm crazy, I know, but, that's me and my life.

"Work all day, look after the kids all night, repeat." Jake said, but the way he said it showed that he didn't begrudge it. Not in the slightest.

"What about you? Kids? A wife?" Jake asked, he'd offered up his own information, so he didn't feel like he was overly prying in that moment.

"Yes, Russia," Andrei affirmed with an energetic nod. "It's a common misconception that people like myself spend all our time in Eygpt."

He really wanted to go on and explain the differences between the two texts but thought better of it. Early in his marriage, Marie often had to stop him from rambling on when at parties about various technicalities few people understood or cared about. In time he came to temper his enthusiasm with a bit of self-awareness and mastered the art of commenting on the subject without losing himself in it. That said, sometimes he couldn't help himself.

"If you're even mildly interested in the subject I can lend you a few books. One of my good friends, Karl Hinter, wrote up a rather comprehensive history on the different varieties of ancient runes with an emphasis on those coming from the East. It's a book and a half, but it is well worth the read in my opinion..."

He trailed off once more flashing a bashful smile upon realizing he had started to ramble and ceded the conversation to Jake. Thankfully, the other man steered the conversation towards another one of Andrei's passions, his family. Hell, he was sitting in this exact room, because of his family. After all, bills had to be paid. It was just a plus that he could indulge his love of ancient runes while he was at it.

"Both," Andrei stated simply. "My wife, Marie, and I have been married for..."

He paused here. Normally, Andrei was good at remembering things, but when it came to how long he'd been married for he always forgot much to Marie's dismay. All he knew was that it felt like forever and that he didn't regret a moment of it.

"...Oh, it must be going on twenty years or so. My youngest, Nikolai, will be going to Hogwarts next year and his older sister Helen will be going into her fourth year at Hogwarts next term," a small fire burst to life in his eyes as he talked about his family. "I'm not entirely certain Helen is all that pleased with the idea of me being her teacher, but that's teenagers for you, right?"

He smiled wryily—he doubted any kid would enjoy having a parent as their teacher.

"I don't know how I'd manage without Marie though," he mused idly. "Color me impressed, I don't think I could handle being a single father."

He wanted to say something more: words of encouragement, advice, anything really. However, he felt it would be overstepping his bounds and more than a bit preachy. Andrei was many things, but preachy was not one of them.

[Sorry about the wait; I've had one hell of a week.]

Teacher Orientation? [Jake] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Teacher Orientation? [Jake]   Teacher Orientation? [Jake] EmptySat Aug 19, 2017 7:51 pm

Jake couldn't help but feel more than a little bit self-conscious when Andrei said that many people made that mistake. Giving a small sheepish smile to show his apology for not knowing better, Jake offered no further comment on that conversation.

The offer of being given a book brought a wry smile to Jake's lips. "I would love to say I'd take you up on the offer, but truthfully... I'm not that big of a reader." The professor admitted. "My sister, however, is always attached to the things. Just one of many ways we're different, I suppose."

The last sentence was said with an air of fondness.

Jake's eyebrows raised in surprise at the length of time Andrei and his wife had been together. Pleasant surprise. Twenty years was such a long time, the six or seven years he'd been with Veronika had seemed long, but it was dwarfed by comparison. "Congratulations." Jake told the man, with genuine feeling. His parents had been married for much longer, but you didn't see it as much in the younger generations.

"I don't think our kids will ever realise that we were their first teachers in life. The irony being the mood swings you'll get now, I guess." Jake commented with a soft laugh. "As for the teenager thing... I'm dreading mine coming to that age, truly. Especially Adrienne. My little girl growing up..." Jake shook his head. She was nearly two, he still had time.

The comment of being impressed made Jake give a small grimace. He didn't want to correct the man and say that he wasn't doing a good job as a single dad, that was a heavy topic, for anyone. And not fair. "Thank you..." Jake managed, instead, sipping his drink to avoid any further conversation on that point.
