Treasure Hunt - Mathew Howard Empty
PostSubject: Treasure Hunt - Mathew Howard   Treasure Hunt - Mathew Howard EmptyMon Apr 17, 2017 7:11 pm

The Great Hall begins to empty as the students trickle out from breakfast. Eventually, the Hall is bare of any students except for you, and as you stand from your seat to leave your attention is pulled away from the treasure hunt by something unusual out of the corner of your eye. At the front, where the Professors usually sit, is a pedestal. It’s not that tall, perhaps only half your height, and is pure white. You can see intricate designs of leaves carved around it.

On top of the pedestal is a chest. You take a few steps closer to investigate. It’s not too large but you know that with magic, it could hold far more than meets the eye. It is a bit shabby and old looking, as if it's gone unopened for many years, a layer of dust and what seems to be cobwebs covering it. There are hints of water damage; the lock is tight and made of a strong metal that has some traces of rust on it, and there is moss growing on the side of the chest.

What do you do?

a) Approach and investigate the chest
b) Open the chest with Alohomora
c) Ignore the chest and leave the Great Hall

PostSubject: Re: Treasure Hunt - Mathew Howard   Treasure Hunt - Mathew Howard EmptyMon May 01, 2017 2:59 pm

Signing up to the Treasure Hunt had been a decision made on a whim. Not something Mathew did often, but he had done so on the guess that others would follow him. More specifically, he was wondering if a certain Ravenclaw would do it. This would create an opening in conversation. Not that Mathew was a big talker. But an opening.

It was therefore unsurprising that as the hall emptied, Mathew was presented with a chest upon a pedestal. The Hufflepuff gave it very little regard before he got up, wand almost instantly in his hand as he moved closer. He might have been born Muggle, but the wand he'd gotten on his eleventh birthday had been something of a welcome, empowering addition to his life. Something he never went without, either.

Mathew's eyes took in the chest, though. Water damaged. It had been in the Lake, perhaps? Maybe there was a portal... or some kind of creature that could walk on both land, and in the water. Narrowing his eyes, but not moving any closer, Mathew opted for the safest option. Open the chest from a distance, and then deal with the consequences.

b) Open the chest with Alohomora

Deciding that the best option is to use Alohomora, you get out your wand and cast the spell, moving the wand in the familiar ‘s’ shape. The purple light hits the chest and a click echoes around the hall as the lock opens and drops to the floor. Nothing happens for a moment and you take a step closer. Suddenly, the top bursts open and there are squeaks that fill the empty hall. There is a blur of blue as something emerges from the chest and flies over your head.

The door to the great hall slams shut and you turn to find that it’s being guarded by six creatures. They are eight inches high and are electric blue. They have long pointed ears and long arms, three fingers on each hand. You recognise them as Cornish Pixies.

They start chattering to each other, loud, shrill noises that hurts your ears. You notice one of them is holding a piece of paper -- that must be the clue! Gripping your wand tightly, you prepare to fight them.

a) Defeat the pixies in order to receive the clue. End your post with picking up the clue.

Using Alohomora to open the chest was a wise decision, even if not necessary, Mathew had summarised when six blue creatures flew from the box. In an instant, he knew that this was definitely the Treasure Hunt, and seemingly the professors were not going to make it too easy for any of them.

Mathew's eyes followed the creatures, setting two of the beasts on fire before they could do much more damage. But, after the second had fallen in a ball of flames, the Hufflepuff had noted that one of the creatures was holding a note. A clue. Biting back the word Incendio in that moment, Mathew's eyes focused on the pesky creatures left.

"Immobulus!" He spoke, voice deadly low, as the spell hurtled towards the four creatures, and froze them in place. "Accio clue." Mathew added, snatching the piece of paper from the air once it was close enough.

A small, sinister smile touched the Hufflepuff's lips. Perhaps this wasn't going to be as bad as he first thought...

The clue reads:

Brewing potions isn’t easy unless you have all the ingredients and the skill. Luckily, three have already been made for you. Find them where you first learnt how to use your cauldron. Choose wisely and your next clue will be revealed.

Quickly, you make your way down to the dungeons, bypassing empty classrooms until you reach the Potions Classroom. Stepping inside, you find, as the note had said, three small glasses on the table. You approach them.

The first contains liquid that is clear and has no special scent, instead appearing to be water. Upon closer examination, you realise that it’s slightly thicker than normal water, but other than that there’s nothing to give away what it could be.

The second glass has a light gold liquid inside, reminding you of the sky at sunset. It’s got swirls of orange inside, and smells faintly of carrots, but other than that has no scent. It’s thick, like medicine, but doesn’t look unpleasant.

The last glass contains a beautiful dark blue liquid that sparkles in the light. There appears to be bits and pieces of glitter inside it as it refracts the light. It smells familiar, but you can’t quite place it. It makes you feel safe and relaxed.

You are now faced with a choice.

Which potion do you drink?

a) The clear, almost water-like liquid
b) The bright golden liquid
c) The dark blue, sparkly liquid

Identifying potions was no easy feat, Mathew knew that, and thus he was quite intrigued by this clue when he made his way down to the dungeons under the obvious location of the next task. His mind, however, was elsewhere as his feet followed the familiar path down to the dungeons. The Hufflepuff was deciphering what the clue meant by the clue being revealed.

That, in itself was a clue. He was sure of that much as he stepped in to the Potions classroom to find the three potions the clue had spoken of.

Mathew moved to the table and picked up the first potion. It was clear, which gave off the idea of water, though the Hufflepuff was not so stupid as to think it would be just that. Swirling the vial around, he could see that this mixture was thicker than water was, thus confirming his earlier thought. A sniff of the vial, however, gave him nothing. Placing it down, Mathew considered it for a moment, thinking through the potions he knew that fit this description.

None. That was what he came up with.

Drinks, then...

A small, wry smile touched the Hufflepuff's lips at that much. Gigglewater.

Whoever made the mistake of drinking this one...

Turning his attention to the second vial, Mathew repeated the process of working out what it could be. The thick golden substance looked like a healing potion he knew of, but upon smelling it, and looking more closely, the carrot smell and orange ruined that theory. Frowning to himself, Mathew placed the vial back with an air of uncertainty.

The third potion, though, after one sniff made Mathew sure that wasn't the one. The smell... he frowned, it was familiar to him, and yet he could not place it directly. His mind was reeling to place it, trying to work it out. He was sure...

The Hufflepuff flung the third vial against the wall, watching it explode as he glared at it. The qualities of the Draught of Peace almost too tempting to resist. Almost.

Turning back to the second potion, Mathew picked it up with a suspicious look on his features before firmly deciding this was the right one. Pausing for only a moment longer, Mathew downed the second potion.

b) The bright golden liquid

The golden liquid seems to be a wise choice and you down it. It’s not unpleasant, tasting only slightly of carrots, but it’s thick and hard to swallow. For a while, nothing happens and you wonder if you’ve wasted your time -- but then, slowly, your start to see a tint of gold around your vision. You blink a few times, trying to clear it, but it only gets worse until all you can see is a film of gold.

Abruptly, the film clears, and as you look around, you realise you can see something written on the wall that wasn’t there before. Written in gold letters, it says:

Make your way to Greenhouse Two to find the next clue. Remember to watch your step, but don’t be afraid to take a leap of faith!

You leave the potions behind and make your way outside to the Greenhouses, finding Greenhouse Two easily enough. Opening the door, you find it’s pitch black. You take a while to adjust, but once you do, you realise that in front of you is a pit. Remembering the instructions of the clue, you take the jump and find yourself being grabbed by a plant! It twists itself around you and starts to squeeze.

You realise that you can’t reach your wand.

What do you do?

a) Struggle
b) Don’t struggle

PostSubject: Re: Treasure Hunt - Mathew Howard   Treasure Hunt - Mathew Howard EmptySun Jul 02, 2017 7:45 pm

Mathew swallowed the potion and his features turned up in to a look of disgust as the aftertaste took hold. However, it was not the taste that bothered him, it was the arrival of the gold tint around the edges of his eye sight. Blinking once, twice, three times, the tint did not clear, and the Hufflepuff frowned to himself. What had he drunk?

However, after the fourth blink of his eyes the tint turned to a film, and it was vaguely unsettling. Mathew's calm exterior did not falter, but his mind was running through the list of spells he knew that might be able to aid him. Even before he came up with an answer, though, the film cleared, and Mathew could see writing out of the corner of his eye.

Taking it in, Mathew read the clue twice, committing it to memory.

Many people may have just left in that moment, though, but Mathew turned back to the vial of golden liquid, and picked it up. Putting it in his pocket for research at a later point.

From there, the Hufflepuff hurried along to the Greenhouse as directed. A leap of faith, in the Herbology greenhouses? He wasn't quite sure how that was going to work, or what it was going to involve, but they were in the magical world, and absolutely anything would be possible. Finding the greenhouse, Mathew let himself inside to find the place pitch black...

A careful step inside, and the door closed behind him. A moment, two, but seeing didn't become any easier. Sliding his foot forward, Mathew felt the edge, and he deduced that the leap of faith would be in the pitch black, down a hole no one could see. The professors, it seemed, were pushing them.

Unafraid, because fear was an irrational feeling, Mathew took the leap of faith they'd been instructed, to find himself surrounded by plants. But not just any plants. As the tendrils wrapped around him, the darkness made perfect sense. Devil's Snare. A tricky plant, but one that could easily be manipulated. All you had to do was sit still, so Mathew did the only thing he needed to do, and waited for the plant to let him through the plants and through to the other side of the hunt.

b) Don’t struggle

10a.
You relax, deciding not to fight the plant. The tentacles tightens a little, but still you do nothing, and a moment later you feel it stop. Bit by bit it loosens its grip until you find that you are slipping down, past it, and a few seconds later you drop down softly and unharmed onto the ground below. Already adjusted to the dimness of the area, you look around and find that you are in the middle of a small hallway. In front of you is a door with a note on it.

Your next task brings you into the lake. Choose wisely.

To your left is what appears to be a dead tree stump on top of a bottle of something green. From where you are, it looks like slimy, grey-green rat tails. There’s a label on the jar, but you can’t make it out from here.

To your right is a small table with ingredients and a cauldron in the middle of it. There’s a piece of parchment beside it, and while it appears to be a list of instructions, you can’t read what the potion is or how to make it.

Which do you choose?

a) Investigate the potions table
b) Investigate the mysterious jar under the stump
