Nikolaj walked into the dark, cold classroom and looked around at his new workspace. Had hadn't had long to accustom himself to the new school, but the potions lab was not all that much different from ones that he had worked in before. Except the damp, almost rotton smell lingering in the air. He marched forwards through the center of the room towards the main desk, his long, black cloak sweeping along behind him. Reaching the desk he put down his large briefcase with a heavy thud and started looking around. A large, wooden, self-standing blackboard stood behind the desk and chair, covered in old chalk dust from the previous year. Nik approached the board, picking up the white chalk and writing in clear letters on the board Professor Andersson - Potions Master.

Underneath his name Nik started a bulletpoint list of objects, of which he would expect his students to realise would be the items needed for the class and he hoped that they would have the initiative to get it out and put it on the desk ready once they had taken their seats. The list commenced as follows
  • Parchment
  • Quill and Ink
  • Magical Drafts and Potions by Arsenius Jigger
  • Wands

He paused briefly before writing the first one, but, considering that it was one of the first classes of the school year and he would probably have a couple of first years who will have left their wands somewhere and wouldn't realise right away.
Having prepared the board, Nikolaj turned back to his briefcase and popped it open. On the front of the desk he placed a beaker filled with a clear, thick, oily liquid. After a slight shake he popped open the beaker and the liquid released green smoke up into the air and a slight fresh, floral fragrance mixed with the cleansing scent of alcohol. It helped to eradicate the rotten smell in the air at least. Following his set up, he set about to searching the rest of the room behind the board to try and find the source of the foul stench, having left the door open for students to enter and find their seats ready for the start of class.

(( OOC: Please can all students aiming to participate post their entrance post prior to the 6th September when class will officially begin. You may enter after this date but please try and catch up on professors posts prior. ))

Janet whipped her books off the ground and grabbed her wand. Some idiot came running around the corner, knocked her down, and ran away. Granted, it wasn't on purpose but still, really?! The least they could have done was stayed to help pick up the books. She shook her head and stood up with a sigh, tucking the books back into her bag before continuing her way to the Potions classroom.

As she arrived, she looked around, seeing she was the first one. She shrugged and sat down at a table near the front. She hung her bag over the back of her chair and got out the stuff on the board. She also got out a spare piece of parchment and began to doodle. Wait, stop, she shouldn't be doing that right now. She sighed and put it back away before opening her book to do some studying as other students filed in.

Clara made her way down several staircases toward the potions classroom in the dungeons--it was quite the trek from the Ravenclaw tower, the highest point in the castle, to the dungeons below the ground. She was looking forward to the first potions class of the year, with a new professor--she hoped he knew what he was talking about.

Though she hadn't had a bad teacher yet in her previous three years of schooling, she was always aware of the possibility whenever a new one was hired. Although she recognized that change was a part of life, that did not stop her from being wary of it. She especially did not want an incompetent potions professor to ruin her favourite subject. The previous one, although notoriously unkind, had been knowledgeable and possessed enough expertise to earn Clara's respect. She could only hope that the new one measured up.

Entering the classroom, she saw that she was one of the first ones there. Glancing toward the chalkboard, she picked a seat and took out the required materials. No cauldrons or ingredients. Looks like just note-taking today, she thought to herself. That was a little disappointing--she'd already read the textbook, and it was full of mostly basic stuff. She hoped to learn something new.

I wonder what we need wands for? It was rather rare to use a wand in potions class, except for clearing cauldrons. Perhaps this would be interesting after all. She sat still and waited for the class to fill up, trying to keep an open mind.

Potions, a subject that Roxy excelled at and had no problems doing her best in. Even when James Balan had been the Professor and tended to not give students more than an EE, Roxy had done her best to impress him, even if he hadn't wanted to acknowledge her efforts. It hadn't deterred in, no in actual fact, it had made her more eager to get the Professor to acknowledge the effort she put into the potions she made and the homework she handed in.

As she slipped into the Potions' classroom, she blinked her eyes at the slightly floral scent that hung in the air and breathed a sigh of relief at that, she didn't want to sit in a stinking classroom at least for the first lesson where she was quite sure the only thing they would be doing was theory work though she didn't rule out the possibility that they would do a practical.

Looking around the room, the Ravenclaw noticed she was the third one in the classroom and the second one of the Ravenclaw's; narrowing her eyes the woman made her way towards the second row of seats and seated herself in the first available desk before she pulled out the required items from the board; a handful of parchment, quill, ink well and the potion's book. Her wand she kept stashed in the wrist holster she had; she'd rather not have people openly look at it, thank you very much.

Sitting in her chair, she patiently waited for the lesson to start, not even bothering to open the book up; she had read it over the summer holidays and she pretty much knew it from front to back. She had nothing to do over the holidays so studying for the upcoming year had been, more or less, what she had done.

The fact that Max had only just scraped an Exceeds Expectations in his O.W.L.s in the previous year -- mostly, the boy believed, because Professor Balan was not the one marking their exams. The Gryffindor Prefect had studied as hard as he could (which for Max was an achievement in itself) to get him that grade, and had been very surprised to find that this had been the case.

Pushing open the door, Max took in those who had arrived, and glanced towards the professor with a small -- already apologetic -- smile on his lips, before disappearing to find a seat at the back of the room. Primrose was not here yet, though he expected she would be, his girlfriend had a flair for Potions that he had never fully appreciated before.

Looking to the board, Max took in the things they would need and grimaced slightly. All he had with him was the book, Professor Balan had never been one for making them take notes. Hoping Primrose would be here soon, so that he could ask to borrow some parchment, Max took out his book and his wand, placing it carefully on top of his desk, and waited.

Leg jigging slightly under the desk, because he was nervous, and sitting still in this classroom was simply an impossibility for the boy.

Elleon was devastated. He had barely passed his potions test. He'd been expecting so much since potions was the one subject he excelled at; it was his pride and joy, that even if he were to fail all other subjects, he could count on an excellent grade in potions. His result had him doubting in his abilities and talent. Was there nothing he could do right?

As he trudged down to the dungeons, Elleon began second guessing himself. Perhaps magic just wasn't for him. He struggled so much, and though he was improving in his spell and charm casting, it took him way to long to master something that other students got easily. It was exhausting to put so much effort into something and get so little in return. The only thing that gave him some hope was that he had been made prefect. If someone saw that he was worthy enough to earn the title, maybe he wasn't so bad after all.

Stepping into the classroom, the first thing he noticed was the mixture of smells. Being Deaf, his other senses were heightened and beneath the floral scent - that he suspected came from the beaker sitting on the Professor's desk, he could detect a foul odor. Hoping that it would soon be masked by the pleasant smell, he took a seat and read what was on the board.

He'd already learned that they were going to have a new potions professor and he'd hoped with all his heart that Professor Andersson would be a lot less unkind than Professor Balan had been. He took out the necessary items and waited for class to begin.

Potions, a subject that Prim wasn't as good at as she wished to be put she had passed the OWLs with an EE thus she had decided to carry on with it in NEWT level purely for the fact that if she didn't she would've only had two subjects to contend with and even she wasn't that lazy. Slipping through the throngs of people milling about, Prim double checked to make sure she had everything in her bag as well as her fold away cane, she had needed it during the summer so she didn't doubt that she would need it during school as well.

Ducking into the open doorway, she blinked her eyes when she noticed her boyfriend of a year sitting in one of the many empty spaces in the class. Well, that certainly was a surprise. Moving towards Max, she dumped her stuff on the table and plopped down next to him.

"I thought you weren't going to carry on with Potion's after OWLs." She teased her boyfriend as she pulled out the stuff that she would need, automatically passing over a handful of parchment along with one of her spare quills and an ink-well to Max when she noticed he had neither of those things.

Sasha loves to go back to Hogwarts since this school seems to be more home to a girl than her own house, where she feels so lonely most of the time. So Hogwarts is like second home for girl. She is always happy to come back here and this year wasn't really any expectation.

The fifth year Hufflepuff walked towards the potions classroom, the lesson what she actually some how seemed to like. She might not be the brightest student in that class but at least she gets her work done. Also, enjoy the lessons what are taught for her here.

The girl a few minutes later walked into the classroom. Sasha took a seat one of the empty seats in the classroom. She wasn't really that close anyone in here. She glanced up towards the board once she was seated. She read what was written there a smiled a bit.

Once she had read it she took out all needed things for this class from her bag. Now what she needs was a wait to this lesson to start. She had no clue what they will do since seemed like they won't do any brewing today. It seemed to be more likely some note taking day. So she really couldn't tell what teacher was up for today.

Potions was sure to be interesting this year seeing as there would be a new potions master. Koda was unsure as to whether or not the idea of someone else teaching potions appealed to her. Sure, professor Balan had been someone of a douchecanoe but she was sure that he meant well. Some people were probably not meant to be teaching children. Then again, some children were not meant to be taught.

Before she could even rest her eyes on the words on the board the thoughts of someone in the room filled her mind. It was someone worrying about a grade that they had received on a potions test in the year prior. Koda tried her best not to chuckle at the idea that one bad test score could make you question a passion of yours. It made no sense to her because people always told one another to try try again.

Trying her best to disregard the thoughts of the boy, Dakoda sat in the back of her room and took out the objects listed on the board.

After several minutes Nikolaj managed to find the source of the stench in the air - a family of dead rats sat decomposing in the back corner of the classroom. He sighed, pulling his wand out from inside his cloak. He pointed it at the pile, muttering an incantation under his breath. The rats frosted over gradually before becoming a block of ice. It hadn't got rid of them, but it would atleast stop the smell for the rest of the class, after which he would look for one of the school House Elves and get them to sort it. He was surprised that they had allowed it to fester there for as long as it had... there was obviously not much discipline when it came to the elves.

Returning to the front of the class, Nikolaj cast his gaze over the students who had gathered, standing at the front. He coughed to clear his throat and hopefully grab their attention. "Class, I am Professor Andersson and I will be your new potions master." He said, as loud and clear as he could - although his thick swedish accent did break through somewhat. He gestured to his name on the board in case they had misheard before continuing.

"Todays class will be a little different to what you have done before I'm sure - but I have heard great things about the students of Hogwarts and I have high expectations from all of you. I hope they are not misplaced." he reached back into his briefcase, pulling out several smaller beakers and lining them up.

"Potions is not just about learning to brew potions - it's also about learning how to recognise them. Knowing a potion by smell or appearance could save your life one day. But it's not just about learning and memorising the attributes of a potion, but knowing how to find out what it is if it is unfamiliar." he reached out and lifted the beaker infront of him. "This one is unfamiliar, but by the end of the day, you will have learned what it is, what it does, who created it and what its made from - and I will not have told you any of this." he began to pour the contents of the larger beaker into the smaller ones, making sure there was enough for one each for the students, plus some extra for anyone arriving late.

"How are you going to do this? By using Scarpin's Revelaspell. Some of you may have studied this previously but it is not necessary. The specifics of the spell are detailed in chapter 8 of your books, page 94. The spell will reveal to you the ingredients for the potion infront of you. Using this knowledge you will locate the potion in your books. It will be listed under chapter 12, Ointments."

He lined up the now filled beakers at the front of his desk. "I will give you one last clue - the creator of this particular ointment currently has a statue on Hogwarts 5th floor... I'm sure some of you will have passed him many times."

He pulled out his chair, taking a seat. "Now you will each come and retrieve some of the potion, and give me your name whilst doing so. You may work alone, or in pairs on this task. House points will be awarded for the first who can give me the name of the potion, the creators name, and details of the effects."

He paused, casting a final glance over the room. "Also... you should be advised not to allow the ointment to touch your skin... the small amount provided won't have too much of an effect, but some of you are small and so... may be easily..." he didn't finish, instead, gestured for them to begin.

((OOC: The statue in question hides a secret passage discovered by Fred and George Weasley in their 1st week at hogwarts. Hopefully this will help you find the potion via wiki.))
