It had been with.......reluctance that he had been led to this lesson.  Originally, he had only anticipated teaching the older students.  Ones who already had a foundation of magic to draw from..........this was not what he had expected.

It had come after a rather, well pointed conversation that he had finally agreed to teach dueling to the younger students.  His job, to point out the finer points, and the most basic of rules.

Flipping through one of the books he had checked out from the library he couldn't help but hold on his disgust for the pageantry of British dueling.  The bows and the flourish, and the seconds.  His required reading had also been a challenge, though in the end he was able to get flourish and blotts to carry it.  It was an American text on dueling which offered more reasonable approaches like a handshake, and not having someone to cover for you if you took a nose dive.

Yet, he was here to learn international dueling, so as a curtesy a copy of the book he currently flipped through also sat on each desk.  His mission, teach the basics, and do a comparison and contrast of several major countries dueling practices.  Easy enough, if the mini-humans could keep up.

The classroom was how he had originally crafted it.  Two sets of desk groupings divided by the dueling line.  It stretched across the room to where two could face off.  Littering the walls were the mannequins for practice, and with soft thuds the bludgers chained to stone continuously rammed the wall, though after several migraines they were now hastily clad in pillows.

As for him, his hair was slicked back.  A simple grey polo with khaki pants.  Definite muggle attire which would probably confuse some, and really baffle others depending on their knowledge of muggle dress.  Taking a sigh he flicked his wand causing a mannequin to zoom over to the opposite starting area.

Standing with only a minor twinge he would take his place at opposite and wait for the students to enter.  A demonstration once they were seated, and then.......education.

Mercy was excited when she found out Hogwarts had a dueling class. She wasn't too familiar with etiquette and such, but in theory, once you actually got down to it, the practice seemed well-suited to her tastes. It was fast-paced, physical, and carried some real risk. She thought she'd be good at it, since she was quick on her feet, and she'd even made sure to study a hex or two before she came (before the excitement of having new books wore off).

So she was quite looking forward to some practical lessons this year. As she stepped into the classroom, she noticed two things. Yes, there were dueling mannequins around the room, and what looked like a dueling ground in the center, but there were also desks, and on every desk sat a book. A flair of disappointment shot through her--it looked like they wouldn't be getting right into it today.

She looked around some more as she picked a seat near the front. She was the first one here, but she saw the teacher standing across from a mannequin on the open strip in the middle of the room. Ooh, perhaps they'd get to watch something! Her earlier anticipation returned. She put down her things and sat down, waiting (ugh) for the class to begin.

Watching as the class trickles in he could feel his face fall to a frown. It was one of those odd disappointments, where you didn't actually want to do it in the first place, so being disappointed seemed out of place. Regardless the census, like the Italians dueling style, was found lacking. Sighing inwardly, and subconsciously outwardly he stood as the last few found their way to their seats.

"Well........hello." He said a touch awkwardly. The lack of individuals had thrown him, and it really looked like only one of the students was really paying attention. "Dueling, 101 I suppose you could say." He would begin standing and opening his hands to welcome the class. "My name is Quinn King, and I'll be your teacher for the year. So, let's call attendance and move to the lesson." His voice began to become more relaxed as he started to talk and move into the lesson plan.

Moving quickly he gave each student only a half second to chirp a here or present. "Mercy.......Aaron". The last couple names would fly even faster, sometimes acknowledging ones attendance two names back from the actual call.

"Well then, I bet everyone here is wanting to see a bang. Learn how to defend, or fight. Two valiant things, both useful for the right, and yes the wrong reason. It is with that in mind, I want you to ask yourself why you are here, why dueling?" He would say calmly and pointedly. It clearly called for a self reflection that perhaps was even more mature than that of the audience he stood in front of.

"For me, it was sport. The thrill of the fight. To test oneself against the mettle of another. There are few things in this life more fulfilling than that. To put every inch of your being on the line against another's, and experiencing for better or worse the outcome there in. This class will focus on the pleasantries, the customs, and the formalities of the duel. Though, I understand that that may or may not hold your interest." He would finish with a wide smile and wink to those in the front row.

"Your books aren't like many. The opening chapters are a little wordy, but any great game needs rules. As you press beyond them.....". He would flick his wand causing all the books to open moving beyond the opening chapters. If the students looked down they would see nothing but pictures. Classic duels and famous duelists competing in a plethora of places.

"Now, if that's not enough to get you excited for the boring stuff, I thought a demonstration was worth it, and then a lesson." Again he had that same boyish smile, the kind that made an individual look years younger than he actually was.

Moving to one end of the dueling platform a shimmer would move out around the desks protecting them from any stray spells. Another flick and a mannequin would take its stance. As for Quinn, he bowed at the same time as the mannequin. The autonomous creation moved to a fencing position, while Quinn's wand remained unseen presumably tucked in an unseen pocket. His stance was loose, his right hand twitching a couple inches from his hip.

What happened next was a blur of motion, one that only a seekers eyes could probably adequately keep up with. The mannequin moved first, several blasting spells, and a stupefy flashing towards Quinn. As for his own motions they were even faster. His hand moving quickly and drawing his wand, two flicks causing each blasting spell to veer off, the stupefy dancing across his shoulder, but missing by a hairs breadth. A third flick, and the mannequin seemed to turn to attack an unseen enemy behind it, as the last motion caused its legs to sink into the ground, just as a last decisive step sent a curse to cause the wooden man to snap forward crashing it's makeshift head into the solid stone it's movements ceasing.

The entire exchange had occurred in under 10 seconds. Just as one might register it was over, Quinn's wand was gone and he stepped back through the shimmer, the shattered mannequin however remained still. His smile wider than ever. "Now, dueling. It's a sport with real life implications, thus politeness is key.....any questions?" All the books would turn back to chapter one, and he would begin to detail the start of duels.
