PostSubject: Introduction to Ancient Runes Lesson 1 [1st-3rd years]   Fri Sep 01, 2017 12:26 am

Holding his glasses up to the light for the third time in five minutes, Andrei looked for any inconsistency in his eyewear. Of course, much like the first and second time he’d looked, he failed to find a single smudge on or scratch in his glasses. Tilting the frameless glasses back and forth yielded no results either; try as he might he could not find anything to keep his mind from the next hour and a half.

Oh well.

His vision snapped back into focus as he temporarily gave up his quest for a distraction and slid the pair of glasses back up his nose. Thankfully, all he saw before him was an empty classroom. Save for the artifacts of every shape and size that lined the walls of the room and the oaken desks spread out before him Andrei was alone. On each desk sat two sheets of paper—his time in Muggle academia made him partial to paper over parchment—one sheet had the syllabus printed on it while the other had a string of shapes and symbols that the practiced eye would quickly identify as rather basic runes.

Each paper was meticulously centered on its respective desk, the chairs were perfectly placed behind said desks, and even the stack of books on Andrei’s desk seemed to be in perfect order from larger at the bottom to small at the top. Everything, in the older man’s opinion, was perfect for his first class of the term and, more importantly, his first class teaching at Hogwarts. He’d spent the last week making sure every detail was in order down to the last verbal flourish and explanatory gesture.

He worried about this class in particular as he would be teaching students much younger than he was used to. The upper division classes, he felt, were much easier to plan for as he could move through the material quickly and expect that his class would keep pace without being babysat. However, when it came to an introductory course he had worn himself ragged in preparation as the burden of teaching lay primarily on him, not his student’s initiative, which for most first, second and even third years had yet to develop fully or so Marie, his wife, had told him—she was always better with children than he was.

And so, the runes professor would wait for the first of his students to trickle in. The blackboard at the front of class was blank and Andrei—wearing robes of the deepest blue—sat behind a large desk to its left idly reading the textbook he’d assigned for the class, Runescape. If his glasses couldn’t offer a distraction, then he would content himself with reading a text he already knew like the back of his hand.

Yeah, that would work...

Cora hummed quietly to herself as she wandered up the stairways towards the sixth floor. She'd never had need to venture this high before, and her legs were beginning to tire as she reached the fifth. Her mind wondered why the school hadn't looked into elevators or escalators by this point, but then remembered what she had been told about Muggle technology not functioning well, if at all, within the grounds of the school.

Finally reaching the sixth floor she let out a huff, placing a hand against the wall and looking down at all the staircases, a few lower down begining to shift and change. For the first two years of her schooling at Hogwarts the ever changing staircases had confused the life out of her and she regularly had to be sought out by prefects and teachers when she had gone wandering and got lost down some darkened unused hallway thanks to the staircases. Of course, it wasn't all the staircases fault... had she ever actually concentrated on where she was walking rather than being lost in a world of her own she probably would have noticed when she headed in the wrong direction quick enough to be able to turn back round.

Just as Cora was thinking this the Banister atop the staircase shifted as the stairs she had just been walking up detatched from her ledge and span on a 90 degree angle to another. She watched as it moved, glancing down at the students gathering at the bottom, waiting to be able to ascend. Finally, Cora turned and headed down the corridor to where her first Ancient Runes class would be.

Pushing open the heavy door to the classroom Cora glanced around, realising she was the first to arrive. She bit the corner of her lip lightly as she scanned over all the seats, before glancing to the teacher at the front who appeared to be reading something. Tilting her head, Cora recognised the cover as the book she had in her bag. It was strange to see a teacher reading the students book material that he was meant to be teaching them. Shrugging, Cora moved as quietly as she could amongst the seats to take one at the front, placing her bag down next to her and taking out the book to place on the bench. She sat down carefully, shifting her chair up closer to the deak and leaning over the pieces of paper there. The fact it was paper and not parchment amused her and she smiled lightly to herself, before beginning to read over the syllabus... a lot of which simply confused her at this point.

The summer holidays had been a precious time to Ceyal. He'd spent the days with Esther, playing with her and enjoying their time together, taking her to parks and for walks. He had, of course, kept in touch with Brooke, exchanging a few texts here and there. He was sure that she too, was elated to have some time with her daughter.

Besides time spent with Esther and Mr. and Mrs. Brown, Ceyal had taken every opportunity he could to ask around for Elouise. He went to hospitals, orphanages, police stations, anywhere he could think of that Elouise could be. His search turned up nothing. Brooke had encouraged him but he'd begun to think that the worst had happened. If she was nowhere to be found, she had to be dead.

Shaking his head slightly to dismiss the thought, Ceyal entered Ancient Runes, seeing that he was the second to arrive. He frowned a bit but took his usual seat right a the back of the classroom. He always strived to be one of the last ones to each class, not wanting to have to socialise in the few minutes before the class started. Still, even if he was early, no one dared to approach him anyway. He was too sullen and taciturn for that to happen.

Sitting back, he waited for class to start.

One...two...three...four...

Keeping a mental count, Andrei's eyes darted up from his book each time he heard a student enter the classroom until he had done so about twenty times. He had expected a few more people, but the distant toll of the bell told him class had to begin with or without the stragglers. Closing the book in front of him and carefully placing it back atop the pile on his desk, Andrei stood.

“Good afternoon everyone, I hope you enjoyed your summer break. My name is Andrei Kessler and I will be your Ancient Runes professor this term.”

He paused and picked up a copy of the syllabus from his desk.

“On your desk, you will find a copy of the syllabus and your first homework assignment. Being that this is an introduction course we will be focusing on the foundations of Rune study. As such you can expect our curriculum to revolve around theory, learning the more basic runes, and, if all goes well, some rudimentary applications of the field.”

Runescape, in Andrei’s opinion, was the perfect book for an introductory course. It walked the reader through the history behind runes while also instilling the importance of precision. Too often neophytes to the field of runes failed to understand the importance of precision—how a rune is written is exceedingly important and not unlike how important pronunciation is to a spell.

“Now, I will be honest with all of you,” he spread his arms gesturing to the class before him as he began to pace slowly in front of the blackboard never allowing his gaze to linger in one spot for too long. “This is not an easy class. In fact, it will probably be one of your harder classes as you are learning an entirely new language, but this does not mean it is impossible. I strongly recommend forming study groups to supplement your learning and, naturally, I will always be available for questions before, after, and during class.”

He paused again for emphasis. In Andrei’s opinion, asking for help was what marked a good student. He’d seen far too many students fail to make the most of their education by not bothering to talk to those around them. Learning wasn't a solitary endeavor, but rather a collaborative one or, at least, so he thought.

“That said, let’s start with something easy,” he clapped his hands together enthusiastically. “Starting with you here…”

He nodded in the direction of a blonde girl sitting at the front of the classroom.

“…and going around the room please introduce yourself and tell the class something you know about ancient runes. There are no wrong answers just yet, so don’t worry.”

Andrei then fell silent and folded his arms across his chest loosely. The first lesson would be, more or less, a freebie for both him and the students to get acquainted with each other. Furthermore, it would allow him to gauge where the class stood on previous knowledge, which was always important.

[Alrighty, I'll be starting this class up. If you haven't posted yet/want to be in the class never fear! You are free to enter whenever, just try not to be too late.]

Hearing the teacher suddenly stand up Cora looked up from her paper, a headache already forming from trying to wrap her mind around what they were going to be doing. She reached into her bag and grabbed some parchment and a quill as the teacher started speaking, quickly scrawling his name, Kessler onto the paper and putting it aside for now. She looked at the paper alongside the syllabus and groaned inwardly as he mentioned that it would be their homework, grabbing her parchment and noting this down also. Her memory wasn't great when it came to homework so she'd made a promise to herself to write it all down this year.

As the teacher went on to warn them that it wasn't going to be easy Cora gulped, glancing around at the other students in the room to see if they looked as worried as she felt. If they did... they weren't obviously showing it. She wasn't entirely sure whom she would form a study group with, but it sounded like a good idea... though Cora was easily distracted, especially in groups, so maybe it wouldn't work out in her favour.

Cora was taken by surprise when the teacher rounded on her to start introductions. Why did I sit at the front?! Cora thought in her head, wincing slightly at being put on the spot so suddenly. She gulped as the instructions for what she would need to do were given, taking a deep breath before speaking.

"I'm Cora...I'm a hufflepuff... uhm..." Cora winced slightly, the yellow on her robes should have been obvious that she was a hufflepuff so she wasn't sure why she'd felt the need to tell everyone that. "And I know... uhm... I did some reading in the summer and one of the runes looks like a unicorn... I liked that one... I think it meant '1' because of the horn... I don't know..." her voice kind of faded away at the end and she sunk down in her seat, hoping that meant her moment in the spotlight was over, looking to the person who'd be next.

Seraphina was in quite a state. She had gotten lost in the castle and couldn't seem to find the Ancient Runes classroom. Finally, running a whole ten minutes late, she burst into the classroom tripping over her robes. She windmilled her hands to the side trying to maintain her balance. After regaining her equilibrium, she looked up through her veil of hair, cheeks burning as a hot blush spattered across her cheeks. Playing it as cool as she could she walked to an empty seat a good distance from the other students; the apology for her professor awaiting his scolding on the tip of her tongue.

After seating herself she caught the professor's instructions. She began wracking her brain for anything about ancient runes that she had read over the summer. Having a firm answer awaiting the professor, she patiently awaited the students that had been there before her to respond. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, exposing her face more and scanning the class with her chocolate eyes. Watching them carefully she noticed the blonde girl who had spoken, she was older, perhaps third or maybe fourth she wasn't sure. She had a feeling that this class would be far more useful than something trivial like Divination. She supposed that she would soon see about the validity that thought.

“Very good, very good.”

Andrei offered a conciliatory smile to the Hufflepuff’s rather shaky response. Certainly, the girl, Cora, had a long way to go both in her knowledge of ancient runes and in public speaking, but the same could be said of pretty much every student in the classroom it would seem.  The older man paid no mind to the latecomer—why bother disrupting class to hand out a mindless reprimand? Instead, he continued up and down the rows of students and got much the same response Cora gave: a vague answer with more than a bit of stage fright though a few tried to give more long-winded answers than he would have liked and time, as it always did, ticked on faster than the new professor would have cared for.

Suffice to say, despite his best-laid plans, he found himself running short on time especially after one student, a Ravenclaw it would seem, found it necessary to give a running summary of the first few chapters of the textbook. So, after the veritable dissertation, he spoke up in hopes of getting through introductions in a timely manner or at least before the impending bell.

“Alright, in the interest of time let’s continue, but just say your name, your year, and your house if you would.”

He pointed at the latecomer after which the torch would pass to the rather sullen-looking young man in the back. So much for his carefully constructed class plan.

Oh well…Next time!

[Dreadfully sorry, funny how time seems to slip away isn't it?]

Let's break for lunch!

Class closed and such.

Let's tally points and such...
Point structure:
-10 points for attendance
-10 points for participation
-10 points for answering questions

Please forgive me ahead of time; I don't have the patience for coding colors and such:
Students:
Cora Jackson {Hufflepuff} = 20 points for attendance and answering questions
Seraphina Priestly {Ravenclaw} = 10 points for attendance
Ceyal Kalhoun {Ravenclaw} = 10 points for attendance

Now, let's tally these points up so we can get those bragging rights in order:
Ravenclaw: 20 points
Gryffindor: 0 points
Hufflepuff: 20 points
Slytherin: 0 points

Alright alright alright, not my best work, I will admit. I'll work on making something a bit more engaging next go around. With any luck, I'll see you guys and more next time. If not, well, thanks for playing and or attending. I need six more words here.
