Global Citizenship - Lesson 1 (closed) Giphy10

Adelaide had never made her dislike of both children and the teaching profession a secret, and yet through the most ironic of ways she had found herself playing Headmistress to nearly seven hundred students. As if that hadn't been enough, she had been asked by the board to justify her position - a position the board had foisted off on her in the first place - by doing actual teaching.

Still, at least she had been allowed to pick her own subject. The higher ups might be vindictive but they were not unintelligent. They knew not to force her into a subject or syllabus she had no command over so at least here she was given the option of instructing in something she had a decent grasp of. A woman who had grown up and spent her adult life in the cutthroat world of business could only think of one thing to teach.

Sociology.

Of course, other topics they would touch on would be history, politics, current affairs and even the economy. But all this was neatly packaged into year long lectures that would be delivered hopefully with minimal interaction from the students. If the stars shone in Adelaide's favor, the kids would simply take notes and leave.

Taking her place behind the large wooden desk and crossing her legs as if in preparation for a formal interview, the redhead swiveled her green gaze to the door. Her class would allow limited students and as soon as it was filled to maximum capacity, the door would close of its own accord and lock the people within from the outside world.

Beside her on a huge chalkboard at the front of the class, only four words stared out into the empty room. The words were vague, inviting the students to think for themselves and not ask any questions.

"WHERE IT ALL BEGAN"

A new class had become available this school year, a class that Elenore was very curious to have seen as an option. The details on the class seemed somewhat interesting, if not also being quite vague in the same moment. However, Elenore had decided to go for it, after all, if she didn't like it, she could always not turn up to the next one, after giving Professor Goshawk a note to say she no longer wished to be a part of the class.

Though, of course, Elenore would ensure she came up with a sufficient reason to excuse herself.

Entering the classroom, Elenore pushed a smile up on to her features as her eyes met with the Headmistress'. "Good morning, professor..." Elenore greeted the older witch, a clear question in her tone as to whether the use of 'professor' was the right way to acknowledge the woman.

After that, Elenore made her way to the second row, and took out her notebook and a quill, making sure she was ready for the lesson. She couldn't help but wonder if Alexei or Tess would turn up to this lesson, but she hoped they both would, so that she had her friends around her in this new class.

The new class of Global Citizenship sounded fun to Alexei so the man took the chance to join in the first lesson to see what it was all about. It wasn't like he had any other lessons to go to and with this being his final year, the man had decided to get the chance to try out new things.

Entering the classroom, Alexei wasn't even surprised to see his... friend(?) in attendance, Elenore certainly seemed like the type of person to try out a class just because it was new and sounded intriguing. "Good morning, professor." He would've gone with Headmistress but seeing as this was a classroom setting the man decided to just go with the easiest form of acknowledging the woman who was going to lead this lesson.

"Morning Elenore." The Slytherin tipped his head as he made his way towards the desk that the Hufflepuff witch was occupying. "May I join you?" He nodded his head towards the empty chair next to her and waited for her to accept or deny his request before he joined her on the desk.

Dominique walked into the Global Citizenship classroom. She was a little nervous as she thought this class would be different. As she wasn’t sure what she was expecting to get from this class. She then noticed that there were two older students. Right now was the only first year student. But she wasn’t going to let that bother her. Dom then walked to the front row, that way she would not miss anything.

She then took her notebook and quill out. Just was ready to start taking notes. Because she knew that she would need them. Just so that she could look back and help her with her homework. Looking around, she wondered if more people was going to show up. She had no idea if another first year would be here? Or was she going to be on her own. But she was here to learn from this class. Then she would worry about making friends. Right now was the time to focus on her studies.

Zoey walked into the Global Citizenship classroom and her eyes were immediately drawn to what was on the black board. Where it all began. That had to be the Big Bang theory, right? It was how muggles explained the forming of the earth and the solar system and all the planets and such.

She nodded politely at their professor and took a seat. She kept thinking about the words on the board and stared at the intensely as she thought. Always a Ravenclaw, through and through. Where it all began. Where it all began. Where did it all begin?

Zoey looked around and bit her lip before looking back at the board. She took out a quill and parchment and wrote the words at the top of the page before writing out possible solutions. Maybe it was a riddle? Or maybe a joke? Although their professor did not look like she cared for jokes.

Looking up when the door opened, Elenore couldn't help the smile that touched her features upon seeing the familiar Slytherin male enter the room. Not that she was surprised, after all, Elenore had told the Slytherin that if he didn't attend classes, she would come and find him and drag him, instead. Or, the ladylike equivalent of such an action, which would likely mean borrowing the house elves to carry Alexei behind her as she walked to class.

As amusing as that idea was, Elenore didn't actually wish to make it happen.

Watching Alexei greet the Headmistress, Elenore's eyes fell away from the Slytherin as he moved over to her, not wishing to be caught staring. At the greeting, though, Elenore looked up at Alexei with a smile. "Good morning, Alexei." The French witch replied, motioning for him to take the seat he'd asked for a moment later.

"Today's topic looks... interesting, if not obscure." She commented, softly so the Headmistress wouldn't hear, but loud enough for Alexei to.

PostSubject: Re: Global Citizenship - Lesson 1 (closed)   Global Citizenship - Lesson 1 (closed) EmptyMon Jan 08, 2018 5:44 am

Her brother had asked that she attend the new class that the Headmistress had opened. She in turn had been incredibly nervous to do so, but he had promised her that it would be a great opportunity for her to meet the woman in charge and learn more from her.

So the morning of, she found herself taking time in getting ready. She got up early, planned her day ahead and pinned her hair back to look as responsible as possible. The last thing she put on was the pin on her chest and she rushed off to help younger students find their way through the castle.

Her mind briefly went over to her brother who seemed so much colder than usual. She tried calling him but it was no avail, she was not interested in doing so, or said he was busy. She took it to heart and instead went on her way.

As she reached the second floor, she tentatively pushed the door open to find that most seats had been filled up. She cringed at the thought of being so irresponsible and being late. Still, she quietly greeted the Headmistress before taking in the classroom.

She was automatically heading towards Elenore till she realized she was already accompanied by a fellow Slytherin. Not wishing to intrude, she found herself sitting alone near the back nervously awaiting the lesson to begin.

Global Citizenship - Lesson 1 (closed) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Global Citizenship - Lesson 1 (closed)   Global Citizenship - Lesson 1 (closed) EmptyTue Jan 09, 2018 1:59 pm

As the class filled up, the Headmistress was glad to see it mostly comprised of older students. Students who, one could hope, wouldn't require as much hand holding and "nurturing". When she had first submitted the final syllabus to the board, Adelaide had done everything in her power to make it as bland as possible. No outdoor activties, excessive homework and self study components, everything that would a child of today pick this particular subject last on their list.

And yet she supposed there were at least a few children here not of today. A nod to Ms. Clement and Ms. Holmes who had at least taken care to make themselves presentable for the occasion. The rest were one and the same. The only other student who stood out was a first year who must have gotten lost on her way to a more interesting lesson.

Regardless, it was now showtime.

"Welcome, ladies and gentleman, to Global Citizenship," she began as the door snapped firmly behind them, signalling the class closed. "You may address me as Headmistress or Professor, to prematurely answer that particular query. I only have a few simple rules, yet they may be the hardest to keep so i advise you listen well. Listening well is a skill you will need for this lesson especially."

While other professors may have written out rules on a board or made them prominent in some written fashion, Adelaide had no such intentions. She would speak and the students would keep up. "i do not appreciate late comers, so you will be on time if you choose to continue this class for the rest of the year. I also do not appreciate noises, whispering, irrelevant discussions or  complaints. If you need to see me, make an appointment with my assistant and keep it, most of you are old enough to realize this is a useful habit to develop now."

Drawing another breath she added. "Your homework is for your own benefit, not mine. So if you submit it, you will be graded. If you do not, you would have wasted an opportunity to learn. This is not a subject included in your OWLs or NEWTs so the results may not impact your score sheets, but if you listen well, it may add to your knowledge of this world we live in."

That being said, the redhead stepped tot he side, making the chalkboard and the written question the center of attention. All around the classroom, the lights dimmed as if a movie was about to start.

"Global Citizenship, if broken down into each individual word, can easily tell you what this class is about. We are not simply citizens of a country but this entire world. Everything that happens around the world, affects us in some way or the other. Be it magical, muggle, animal, plant, astral body or changes in the course of nature. We would be foolish to believe we live independent of a larger system. And that larger system is what we will try to delve into this year."

The words on the board, which had been written in normal hand only a moment ago, began to grow in font, until they dominated the entire board. The question "WHERE IT ALL BEGAN?" glowed softly on the board as the lights dimmed even further.

"Where did it all begin? Some people claim it began a long time ago with a loud bang. Fitting how the universe felt it had to nosily announce itself as it came into being. However, we will look into the beginnings of magic." the redhead rescinded to her desk, completely drawing the students' attention to the board where the words were now replaced with an mage of the perceived Big Bang. The image was soon replaced with that of a lone wand, emitting sparks.

"We now take it for granted that magic comes from our wands, or the more educated of us claim it is the most efficient tool to channel our magic. After all, it is recognized globally as a symbol for witches and wizards. And yet few of us realize that using a wand is predominantly a result of European influence. Earlier civilizations had their own ways of utilizing magic. Would someone care to name a few methods by which our ancestors channeled their magic?"

To say that she was nervous was an understatement; the Headmistress played no games when it came to teaching. Subconsciously her frames straightened all the more and sat as primly as possible to show respect for the woman before her.

It was fascinating for Tess to see a pureblood woman actually have a career on their own without a man controlling her.   It was so enthralling that as the Headmistress began to intimidate them, she found herself smiling.

As the lesson really began Tess automatically raises her hand in hopes of showing her she had some potential. A slight signal was sent her way and she found herself responding in an even tone.

“History states that indigenous communities sought to concentrate their magic through their bodies. Wandless magic was one of the most crucial ways that magic was released.”

Once she finished she ignored the slight nervousness coursing through her body. The Headmistress could not see that or deem Tess weak, so she clasped her hands together.

Global Citizenship - Lesson 1 (closed) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Global Citizenship - Lesson 1 (closed)   Global Citizenship - Lesson 1 (closed) EmptyTue Jan 09, 2018 9:14 pm

Elenore had been disappointed when Tess moved to sit on her own, the youngest Clement had turned slightly to see Tess when she walked past, and when she caught the older witch's eye, Elenore mouthed a sorry to her friend. Had she known Tess was going to be here, Elenore would have made sure a space was saved. Though, of course, they could have made space, but Tess seemed to not want to burden them.

It made it known, though, that Elenore needed to speak to Tess when they were both free as she turned back to the front of class.

It was quite soon after that the Headmistress started her lesson, laying down some rules, and explaining what to call her. Elenore had no problem with anything the red haired witch said, and waited patiently, quietly, and expectantly for the lesson.

The lesson was quite cryptic at first glance, but when the Headmistress explained what they would actually be looking in to, Elenore had to say she was relieved this wasn't going to turn in to a science lesson, or a debate on how the world started. That, was not a subject Elenore wished to dive in to again any time soon.

Elenore's hand raised a few moments after the question was posed, waiting politely to be called upon, but Tess Marie beat her to it. Lowering her hand, and turning slightly to see her friend, Elenore smiled fondly at the knowledge of her closest friend. A smile that stayed on her lips as she turned, raising her hand once more and waiting to be called upon.

"Runes," Elenore stated simply before continuing. "The use of Runes has been used for a very long time -- we will all note quite clearly the hieroglyphics of Egypt being the most poignant of examples. Through these writings, spells can be performed and have been for many thousands of years. However, this technique is... somewhat less common now most likely due to the more modern method of using a wand." She explained, hoping this would be a full enough answer for the Headmistress.
