An Introduction to Potions (All Years) Empty
PostSubject: An Introduction to Potions (All Years)   An Introduction to Potions (All Years) EmptyFri Jan 04, 2019 2:13 am

Annika Blackwood was... certainly something, Azalea reflected as she gathered up the student roster and syllabus at lightning speed from the Potion Mistress's desk. Not only had Miss Blackwood not shown up at the Feast but she had forgotten all about it until the next morning. Indeed it had been a sight to see the Head of Slytherin walking down the Great hall in billowing robes of leaf green to a breakfast table populated only by the sort of students who could make it down to for Breakfast a whole hour before classes began. Upon finding out that she had missed the official feast by a whole twelve hours, Annika hand't been too perturbed, instead curling up on her chair like a child and yawning widely, complained of how she hadn't slept all night thanks to all the root beer in her system.

Azalea had managed to work out from her first meeting with the witch that students would likely not be Annika's first priority. So she had gone to great lengths to tell Annika where she could be reached, how to deliver papers and books to her and how remarkably easy it was to have house elves do all these things. The young Miss Blackwood had nodded vaguely, chewing a bit of toast before deciding she needed a nap right there on the staff table. To her credit though, the Potion Mistress had woken up fifteen minutes later completely refreshed and sharp as a tack.

The sharpness however was not reserved for everything. Today, Annika was supposed to be holding a combined lecture for all years on the basic theory of potions, a lesson that should have begun twenty minutes ago but clearly hand't because five minute ago, a house elf had arrived with the note saying Professor Blackwood was busy and could Azalea please teach the class instead. It had taken Azalea another five minutes to gather up everything she possibly could in such short notice and the witch was now speeding down the hallway leading to the classroom, her heels click clacking on the stone floor while she kept up the fastest pace her fitted skirt allowed her to.

And still she arrived in he classroom twenty two minutes late, to a sea of students all ready and seated. Even the latecomers had arrived and taken their places at their stations. thanks to Annika and Azalea's combined tardiness.

"Good morning all," the brunette greeted, trying to play off her late entrance as casual. "Ah, nice to see everyone managed to get out of bed early today. Give yourselves a round of applause please."

Dominique was excited for potion class. It was one of her favorite classes. Even though it was also her father favorite. After everything that had happened this summer, she could never forgive him. Right now she was going to through herself in to school and also quidditch. Then she would try and deal with it when she would come home for winter break. Right now she was going to focus on the class. As she knew that she had to keep up her grades. Dominique knew that she could always write Victoria. As she knew that they wrote letters last year.

Well it was more like she was writing her uncle who was super busy. Victoria was just being polite and answering them. Which she really liked her and hoped that she would have came for a visit. But after everything that happened, she was glad that she didn’t. Early was something that she was glad of as she hoped that Mercy or Mimosa would be here. But she then noticed that the professor came in and she was late. It was something that Dia wasn’t going to point out.

An Introduction to Potions (All Years) Empty
PostSubject: Re: An Introduction to Potions (All Years)   An Introduction to Potions (All Years) EmptySat Jan 05, 2019 8:53 am

It had started up again as if it had never left, truly. The way everyone fell in to step hadn't changed from where it had been left in June, but perhaps there were a couple of hopeful second years joining in to the circle, and a couple of fourth years holding back to be around the group. Mimosa's group, as Nikolai always called it in his head, though in reality that was exactly what it was. People drawn to the witch because of the name she had dropped in their first year, the constant appearances of Jacques Clement, and the never ending supply of gifts that came from hanging around Mimosa.

But none of the group gathered had what it would take to truly know the influence of House Clement. None of them were clever enough to work that out.

Except him.

Keeping towards the middle of the group -- Mimosa was busy talking to others that Nikolai didn't care to bore himself with -- Nikolai followed the group down from breakfast to Potions class in near silence. The only two conversations that had ensued was the silent glaring talk with Ji Hyun telling him to back off, and the softly spoken 'hello' to Bushrah who had turned almost as red as her tie and not returned the sentiment. Odd witch, Bushrah Alamudin, but Mimosa seemed to like her enough so she stuck around the group.

They had arrived in the Potions lesson in the large group, and seeing as the tables were split in to groups of four, they were forced to split off. Ji Hyun had tried to take up the seat beside Mimosa, but Nikolai had shoved the other boy out the way of the seat and quickly sat himself upon it. Ji Hyun had quickly recalculated and sat himself opposite Mimosa, whilst Bushrah had taken up the seat opposite Nikolai.

Small talk had ensued from this point, with no professor there, which, obviously, meant they were all treated to yet another rendition of how amazing Mimosa's summer in India had been. As if they hadn't heard the story enough times already, they were going to hear it again. Though, this time, Mimosa had explained about how she and her Jacques -- Merlin the witch was stupid if she truly thought you could own someone, let alone the Clement heir -- had gone to the temple in the garden of their hosts and prayed, or something. Nikolai's attention had waned away at this point, leaving the younger witch to just talk, and talk and talk some more.

The talking went on for way too long, though, and after a while, Nikolai found himself glancing to the clock, wondering where the professor was. Ten minutes late... Fifteen minutes late... twenty minutes late.

"Do you think we should tell someone that the professor hasn't arrived?" Nikolai asked his table, cutting across Mimosa's boring stories that had Ji Hyun hooked and Bushrah hanging on to her every word, though her eyes seemed to have been on him even before he'd spoken. Bushrah's response was an eager nod, but no words. Ji Hyun just scowled as if Nikolai had committed some heinous crime, whilst Mimosa went to open her mouth to speak and the door opened to admit... not their professor.

Frowning to himself as the Potions Assistant entered the room instead, Nikolai's attention moved from his table, and instead to the words being spoken. The humour, at least in Nikolai's opinion, fell flat on the room, but it didn't really matter all that much. Now that he could see Miss Harrington up close, he couldn't help but actually feel glad for his dad's efforts this year. Finally, they had some teachers that might well just keep their attention.

Or, at least, his attention.

PostSubject: Re: An Introduction to Potions (All Years)   An Introduction to Potions (All Years) EmptySun Jan 06, 2019 5:30 pm

Being back in Hogwarts for another year was interesting for sure. She had no clue how this year will go and when she arrived to potions she saw there bunch of student she barely knew. She sat down one of the seats away from them. She didn't wanna have some chit-chat before class she had enough durning feast with her housemates.

Awhile looking more around she noticed professor wasn't here which the girl found very odd. She didn't say anything about it at all. She kept quiet about it. Soon someone arrived and all Amanda could tell that this preson wasn't their professor. She heard who she was trying feast but that wasn't such important fact for her but she still remembered. The potions assistant. Someone who she didn't know well.

Anyways she was curious more what they will do in class rather than questioning why she was late. That wasn't her business there. So waited there what needs to be done today. All she knew that she will try her best has always.

An Introduction to Potions (All Years) Empty
PostSubject: Re: An Introduction to Potions (All Years)   An Introduction to Potions (All Years) EmptyFri Jan 11, 2019 2:57 pm

When her joke fell flatter than a can out of opened diet coke left out all day, the witch gazed out at the class full of students. "Wow, tough crowd," she managed, her eyes landing on a certain brunette beside a lanky boy. "Well, as I'm sure you've noticed, I am not Professor Blackwood. She was unable to join us due to an urgent matter so I'll be taking over."

It was a struggle to remove her gaze from the table of four on the right but Azalea managed. She was the one who had insisted she could do this so now was the time to prove so. "For those of you who were otherwise occupied at the feast yesterday, I'm Azalea Harrington-."

"That's my name!" the brunette squealed out from her place, not at all shy about interrupting someone to have her say.

"Indeed it is," Azalea continued, trying to suppress a smile at the confidence the young lady exuded. "Well, it's my name too. And I'll be your Assistant Professor for the year. Your instructor, Professor Blackwood, is a very important person in her field and she may not always be around to answer your questions so that's where you come to me. I have all the information on your homeworks, assignments, what you should be studying up for exam and so on."

Once the witch had made sure everyone understood, she began the class properly. "So Professor Blackwood wanted you all to get a knowledge of the theory of potion making, but before that, we need to figure out why Potions are important. A swelling solution can make something grow in size, but so can an engorgement charm. A raskovnik plant can help open locked doors but so can an Alohamora. So why do we even bother with potions in the first place? Any guesses?"

An Introduction to Potions (All Years) Empty
PostSubject: Re: An Introduction to Potions (All Years)   An Introduction to Potions (All Years) EmptyMon Jan 14, 2019 1:00 pm

Mariah wanted to pay attention to her first potions class. Well, she wanted to pay attention to all of them, but she figured just the first one shouldn't be too much to ask for.

She had arrived determined and ready to learn, taking up a seat in the back half of the classroom with a couple of her housemates and trying to blend in. She didn't know many people's names yet, but she thought at least one of the girls at her table was named Cassandra...or maybe Alexandra. Or maybe those were two different people. They were all friendly enough, but they seemed to be good friends with each other already, and most of their conversation was unintelligible to Mariah - something about a boy on the Hufflepuff quidditch team and what a keeper he was? She couldn't pitch in even if she wanted to.

Instead, she took out one of her brand new notebooks and a pen, and settled her attention on the front of the classroom where the teacher should be walking in any minute now.

After the first five minutes of waiting, her mind started to wander. Her eyes drifted across the classroom, and she noticed a couple students writing with what seemed to be old-fashioned feather quill pens. Strange.

The more she immersed herself in this wizarding society, the weirder it revealed itself to be. Quill pens, and carrier owls, and parchment paper...at least one of her dormmates had confirmed that Hogwarts did indeed have WiFi, so it was possible to send emails instead of letters. Still, she considered trying to use an owl one day, just for the heck of it.

She was able to catch snippets of some other students' conversations. One girl had apparently gone to India over the summer. That sounded like fun. Mariah had always wanted to travel. She figured it would be easier to do that now that she lived in Europe, since all the countries were so close together.

She was fully immersed in a daydream about quaint little cottages nestled high in the Swiss Alps, when the door suddenly opened and a woman walked in. Mariah recognized her as the one who was reading the names at the sorting ceremony. Was she their potions teacher? Mariah couldn't quite remember. She'd been so overwhelmed when she'd first arrived that she hadn't thought to pay much attention to the staff table.

Only when the woman cracked a joke about being early did Mariah notice the actual time. It was a good twenty minutes past the time when class was supposed to start.

The woman continued talking, and Mariah leaned in to hear the information she was giving out. Okay, not the potions professor, just a TA. She found herself silently appreciating the woman's skirt, which had a pattern of what looked like cogs and gears and gave off a sort of steampunk-y vibe.

She snapped back to attention as she registered the question. Why bother with potions? That was something Mariah had been asking herself for a while now. In fact, it was something she had once asked Mr. Weber in a fit of frustration after yet another concoction had blown up in her face. His answer had made sense, though she still didn't find it entirely satisfactory.

As she saw no one else raising their hand, she slowly raised hers to about ear level, thinking maybe she could get some points for her house. When the TA noticed her, she quietly summarized what Mr. Weber had told her.

"If you don't have your wand, or you're not allowed to use magic for some reason, you can still use potions. They require magic to make, but if you've already made them, anyone can use them, even muggles."

Mimosa was the first one to speak, her answer coming out even before the child's slender hand was fully raised in the air. Azalea indicated for the young Slytherin to go on and the child continued happily.

"It's because potions are pretty, and colorful!"

"Indeed they are, and while that's a good reason to brew them, would someone else like to give it a try?" At her words, a Hufflepuff hesitantly raised her hand, not seeming used to answering questions here. Azalea remembered the teen vaguely from the sorting ceremony, her age and height among a group of first years about the only thing to draw the brunette's attention away from the Gryffindor table where her daughter sat.

"If you don't have your wand, or you're not allowed to use magic for some reason, you can still use potions. They require magic to make, but if you've already made them, anyone can use them, even muggles."

"Well said Miss..." The Potions TA looked at her register, not having commuted everyone face to memory yet. " Berkeley-Benton. Five points to Huffllepuff. Would anyone else like to follow these ladies' excellent lead?"

"Don't I get any points for my answer," Mimosa chirped up.

"You get five style points, those buttons are on fleek," the older witch responded, watching the girl happily go back to her whispered conversation with the boy beside her. "Now, let's see what the rest of us can come up with."

An Introduction to Potions (All Years) Empty
PostSubject: Re: An Introduction to Potions (All Years)   An Introduction to Potions (All Years) EmptySat Jan 26, 2019 9:23 pm

Apollonia scowled in annoyance as she rushed up to the Potion's classroom, her heels awfully loud in the empty corridors as she sharply turned around the corners and dodged the last of the students that were also late to their lessons. It wouldn't be her first time arriving late at a lesson but it would certainly be the first time she arrived late for a Potion's lesson.

Huffing, the girl slowed her run into a walk as she approached the Potions Classroom, she could already hear the lesson having been started and she grimaced. Breathing deeply, Apollonia slipped inside the classroom with an apologetic smile that she sent at Professor Harrington. "Apologises Professor Harrington," She had totally overslept and the reason for that had been because her year-mates had totally ignored her sleeping form - she made a mental note to not wake them up the next time one of them overslept for a lesson, it would teach them to not leave other people asleep.

She was quick to slide into an empty seat and just as quick to softly question one of the other students on the topic. Having gotten caught up, Apollonia turned her attention back to the Professor.

Raising her hand in the air, Apollonia waited to be called on before she politely answered the question though you could hear slight hesitation in her voice. "Could one reason be that, unlike a spell or an enchantment which you can undo with a simple finite, no matter who cast the spell, you cannot undo the effect of a Potion unless using an antidote or waiting for it to wear off which can either be days or sometimes even months...?"

An Introduction to Potions (All Years) Empty
PostSubject: Re: An Introduction to Potions (All Years)   An Introduction to Potions (All Years) EmptySun Jan 27, 2019 2:23 am

The next answer came from the striking redhead who had entered the class even later than her. The Slytherin (as indicated by the finishings on her uniform) had apologized and been forgiven quite easily seeing as Azalea herself had arrived late and the witch was now more certain than ever that young Miss Leandros will be able to catch up given the answer she had been provided with.

"Excellent, take five points for your house as well," the assistant professor replied before turning to write both well made points on the blackboard. "Both Miss. Berkeley-Benton and Miss Leandros have touched on two of the more useful applications of potions making. The young lady from Hufflepuff spoke of stored magic, magic we can create and store to be used in a moment of need when we don't have access to our wands or other instruments. Some potions also strengthen over time so there is a lot to be said for making and storing them. Miss Leandros spoke of the complicated nature of potions. You need to understand what a poison is before you can craft an antidote. Contrary to popular belief, shoving a Bezoar down the throat isn't a universal remedy."

The witch waited for the polite laughter of those who understood the joke to quiet down before she spoke again.

"But above all, potion making is a discipline that requires patience, something that isn't everyone's forte. Fortunately, being an average potion maker will not have a great impact on most of your lives so you only have to stick it out til your OWLs or NEWTs. Though if you are taking Potions for NEWTs without a particular zeal for the subject, I advise you to reconsider."

The brunette paused once more, letting her students think it over. The older ones would need that moment to rethink their choices, and Azalea had no problem affording them that moment. As she began to speak again, letters and punctuations flew onto the black board, but instead of the traditional potion recipe and ingredients, something of a word puzzle appeared.

ggdvah ftu tnlhoid raie

maervsiuret

"So let's get started on the patience bit. On the board you'll see a list of... well, nonsense. But once unscrambled, they do form the name of a potion. Could you all please work out one of those names and offer a few characteristics of the potion you have uncovered? You may raise your hand when you think you have it."

PostSubject: Re: An Introduction to Potions (All Years)   An Introduction to Potions (All Years) EmptySun Jan 27, 2019 11:02 am

Apollonia smiled at the Professor when she had been given the five points for her answer - while Potions was not her strongest subject, she was still well-versed in it even though sometimes an answer escaped her and she needed to research it to find out. Not that she particularly cared, it was best to research then just flounder about with no answer to a question.

As Miss Harrington carried on with the lesson, reminding them all to re-think their choice for NEWTs should they wish to carry on with Potions, Apollonia watched the board as random letters and words appeared. Her brows furrowed in thought as she tilted her head.

Unscrambling words was something that Apollonia enjoyed and she took her time trying to figure out what Potion was hidden within those words. It wasn't until her eyes rested on the third word 'maervsiuret' that the answer instantly jumped at her.

An eleven letter Potion that had the letter V in it - there weren't many and as she slowly unscrambled the word, writing it out on the parchment she had pulled out, Apollonia's lips pulled into a grin as the letters finally made sense to her.

'VERITASERUM' also known to Apollonia as the Truth Serum, a Potion that is just as hard to make as say Wolfsbane or even Felix Felicis. Taking her time she wrote down the handful of characteristics that she knew about the Potion.

Her hand rose up along with a handful of others and she waited for Miss Harrington to call on her before she answered. "The third word is Veritaserum also most commonly known as a Truth Serum. It's a difficult Potion to brew as it requires a full lunar cycle to mature and it requires patience and a steady hand to make." She paused to take a breath before carrying on. "Veritaserum, when brewed correctly, turns clear thus making it colourless and it's also an odourless Potion. When ingested, either in a tea or some other juice, no-one can tell whether they have taken it or not as there is no taste at all. No tell-tale sign until they are spilling their worst secrets. However there are a few limitations and those are that it can be resisted by the use of an antidote or, if the witch or wizard is fairly strong, by Occlumency."

She looked at Miss Harrington as she finished.
