PostSubject: The Study & Appreciation of Ancient Runes (Open to all years)   The Study & Appreciation of Ancient Runes (Open to all years) EmptySun Jan 06, 2019 7:15 pm

There was no theme this year.

Normally, the professor turned headmaster spent a good chunk of time setting up his classroom. This year, however, was different. His duties as headmaster prevented him from decking out the small room in the artifacts of civilizations long past. Last year it was Scandinavian culture, the year before it was Egyptian, and this year? Well, this year the walls of the classroom were filled with stacks of books that stretched to the ceiling on either side of the room. The windows, those small portals of light, seemed to give off only a muted glow of ambient life as they were mostly covered by books of every shape and size. Truthfully, the only clue that the classroom was not an excess storage room or wayward extension of the library was the large blackboard at the front and professor Kessler himself.

Sitting at his desk by said blackboard, the blue-robed Andrei waited for his first class of the year to arrive. Much to his dismay, his previous class evaluations mentioned the overwhelming amount of theory inherent to his class. As such, today's class would be a bit of practical rune work; the creation of a lamp stone. The whole process was quite simple, but he hoped that it would be enough to capture the interest of his students and give them a little taste of why theory was so important to his favored discipline. That was the idea anyway, time would tell whether it amounted to anything.

Upon arriving, each student would find a perfectly smooth river stone on their desk. A few were different colors and some were more smooth than others, but they would work all the same. All that really mattered was that the students had a blank canvas on which to inscribe the requisite runes on to.

The distant toll of the bell soon found its way into the room, fifteen minutes until class.

And so began another year.

It was only the first week back and Mimosa was already expected to do things she wold rather not, like pick out class schedules and took over whatever it is they would be studying for the year. Of course, not doing any of those things her first two years had served her well so why should she start now. As usual, the young Slytherin had foisted off her schedule on someone else to sort through and now found that this year, she was taking Ancient Runes again. Mimosa didn't care either way, simply noting that she would be with most of her housemates in the class which was better than being stuck with just Bushrah and Jia En.

The twelve year old arrived amid her usual entourage of fans and admirers, flanked by Ji Hyun and Squid Boy on either side with the meek Gryffindor following somewhat closely behind. Was it Mimosa's imagination or was Bushrah's hijab a slightly brighter red than usual? The color did not suit the witch's dark complexion, making it stand out even more.

Upon entering the classroom, the Slytherin extricated herself from the group and made her way to the professor. He was Headmaster now which must be pretty great because now he got to be her Headmaster. "Hello Sir!" she squealed, walking right over to his desk. "How are you, how was summer? Mine was great! I went to India and I got everyone presents!" With that, the child produced a bright pink package wrapped in a bow of pure glitter that would leave the shiny material all over the classroom for days to come. Inside the package, the professor would find a neatly framed blue disk with the Hindu symbol of Aum inscribed upon it.

"Hey Mimosa!" someone called out, interrupting her conversation with the adult and forcing the young witch to hurriedly take her leave before she turned to see Catherine and Karan. Waving to them, Mimosa walked over to the duo to catch up. She knew her seat was saved between Squid Boy and Ji Hyun.

Nothing had changed this year either.

Nikolai didn't really want to attend his dad's classes. Not really. The older Kessler was, in Nikolai's opinion, boring. Perhaps it was because the man was his dad, or maybe it was because he didn't really enjoy the subject his dad taught, but it didn't much matter to Nikolai. He hadn't been able to reduce his classes down for good reasons, so for this year, his schedule was going to remain completely filled with all the lessons available to the third year students. He would make a decision next year as to what he wanted to drop, so for this year... his dad was under scrutiny.

Nikolai had entered the class, as he always did, with Mimosa's posse. He'd cast a look towards his dad with a vague notion of a hello, before moving to the desk where Mimosa, Ji Hyun and he always sat. From there, it was the glare towards Ji Hyun as they sat down on either end of the table that told him once more that he needed to back off, before he turned his attention to getting his desk ready for the lesson.

And then, Nikolai realised that someone was missing.

Mimosa.

Looking up from his desk, Nikolai saw the witch handing a pink gift wrapped present to his father and groaned softly at the sight. Seriously? Did she really think this to be appropriate? With his dad? Grumbling softly to himself, Nikolai opened his note book and set to reading over the notes he'd been making from their previous classes this week, pretty much using any means possible to ignore the fact he was in his dad's class right now.

Going for classes was a good thing since you can learn different things in them. She soon entered into Ancient Runes classroom. The girl had never been good at this class. Reading runes didn't come quickly to her. She didn't let that stop from trying.

She greeted professor and tried to find an empty seat where to sit. There were empty seats here and there. She took the seat somewhere middle of the classroom. She didn't want to sit very far and then again at the front.

The Ravenclaw took her needed stuff for this class from the bag and put them on her table. She glanced on the rock in front of her, and she had no clue why everyone seemed to have fun. While she looked around, she could tell none of the stones looked same. She soon looked back at her table and just kept waiting for class to start soon. So they can begin to learn.

She wasn't really into chit-chat before class.

After a busy summer at the Ministry, Clara was glad to be back at school for her final year. She was now balancing her schoolwork with her job, but she had always been very organized, so it wasn't too much of a problem. Most of the stuff she did for Bo wasn't all that intellectually stimulating, so she was grateful for something else to do as well.

Now that she had reached her seventh year at Hogwarts, Clara knew she should be thinking about the future. She knew she wanted to go to university - she had known that since her first year - but her course of study was still a little up in the air. Initially, she had been determined to study potions, but after taking Ancient Runes for the past few years...well, she thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. She had always liked the theoretical aspects of potions more so than actually making them, and Ancient Runes was very much a theory-based class.

She also couldn't get the idea of alchemy out of her head. She had only taken one class the year it was offered, but she got the feeling there were a lot of avenues to explore should she choose to pursue them. Perhaps a combined course of study could be a possibility. She would have to look more into it.

Clara entered the Ancient Runes classroom wondering what this year's theme might be. She had always liked having a theme to tie the curriculum together. She had her personal bets placed on South Asia, but when she took a look around, there didn't seem to be any noticeable decoration, unlike previous years. She was a little off-put by the broken pattern, but she tried to shake it off. The professor was the headmaster now. He was probably too busy to decorate his classroom.

Still, she did quite like the atmosphere the room gave off. It was almost like a library, and the light was dim enough not to hurt her eyes. She nodded to Professor Kessler and took a seat near a stack of books, examining the smooth stone resting on her desk.

Ah yes, the cabbage girl, of course, she was the first one to bounce her way up to Andrei's desk. Maybe he was getting old, but it seemed to the Headmaster that the young Slytherin had far too much energy for her own good. Nonetheless, he offered her a kind smile that he so often wore when humoring Helen and Nikolai.

"Hello, Miss Harrington," he pulled the glasses from his desk and pushed them up his nose to better see the girl. "And thank you, my summer—"

Just like that, the small witch was off leaving only her glitter covered present behind as proof that she was indeed there. No, maybe it wasn't his age, after all, that kid just had way too much energy. Indeed, the brief episode elicited a silent sigh from the Headmaster as he watched the rest of his class arrive in fits and bursts.

There were a few familiar faces and a few new ones, which was good to see. He gave Miss Goldstein—typically one of his best students—a half-nod of acknowledgment as she entered, greeted Miss Larson in kind, and then there was Nikolai, his son. The Headmaster had tried his best to remain distant from his son while the two were at school to save the boy from the grief his friends would surely give him for it. Normally, he made up for such distance by spending his summers indulging his son's hobbies and generally taking time to be present in his life. This past summer, however, Nikolai had grown distant; he got a job and spent less and less time at home. Marie assured him it was normal for a boy his age and, though he knew his wife was right (as she so often was), it pained him even now.

"Good Morning everyone," he put Nikolai from his mind as he stood and began class. "I apologize for the mess."

He waved a hand vaguely at the chaotic walls around him.

"I did not have the time to decorate properly, but I do, however, have a good lesson for us today," he began to walk to the far side of the chalkboard, away from his desk. "In fact, with any luck, it's a lesson you will be able to actually take home with you."

He pulled a smooth river rock from his robes, held it up, and inadvertently brought a small cloud of glitter from Mimosa's gift that had fallen on his sleeve along with it.

"Each of you should have one of these on your desks," he didn't bother stopping to check if anyone was missing one, he'd double and triple checked before class that everyone would. "Today, these will serve as our canvases for a particular magical enchantment that will turn these stones into lamps."

Having made his way back to his desk, Andrei placed the stone down and turned back to his class.

"So," the chalk on the board behind him clicked away as it took notes for all the class to see. "Who here can tell me the incantation for the wand-lighting charm?"

Pausing, his blue eyes danced around the room waiting for a student brave enough to speak up...

Amanda looked around here and hoped that someone else would reply to the professors question there now after he had started the class. She did knew the answer but she didn't wanna stand out that much today. She was sure there was more people who would love the attention.

She raised her hand there now and soon after that she could tell answer. "If I'm correct then it's Lumos what you are looking for answer," she said there now with a small smile on her face. It was one of the spells she knew and she was good at it.

She had no clue yet how to turn stone ti lamp but it seemed like interesting thing to do. Amanda was aware that they soon will learn how do it. She hoped if wouldn't be very hard.

After her answer The Ravenclaw kept looking at the stone.

Mimosa found her seat between Ji Hyun and Squid Boy as usual and even took out her book which she had remembered to bring all on her own this time. Indeed, the young witch looked terribly pleased withe herself as she settled into a serious pose which was only marginally ruined by sneaking glances at Squid Boy's book to make sure he knew what he was doing. He was slow sometimes but Mimosa liked to help.

When the professor mentioned the river stone, the child noticed for the first time that there was indeed something on each of their tables. Reaching out to the object, Mimosa picked it up in wonder, watching the yellow surface almost glow in the otherwise drab classroom. Not everyone's stone was the same. While her's was gold, round and smooth, Ji Hyun's was longer, and a plain grey.

She hand't really heard the Headmaster's question, which meant it probably wasn't important. But the Ravenclaw's answer did sway her away from admiring her stone. Automatically, her hand was raised in the air when the older witch was done speaking and Mimosa spoke more to correct the Ravenclaw than she did to answer the question.

"Unless you want a really bright light," she added, having retained the information from all the times she had been around the ligating and camera crews for her work. "Then you add "Maxima", I think for maximum effect." The words were close enough, so it had to mean what she thought it did.

"Correct, Miss Larson," an almost devious small slipped across his face. "Five points to Ravenclaw. Now—"

He began to speak, but a familiar voice broke in, the voice of Mimosa Harrington. Perhaps, along with toning down her energy level, she also needed to learn manners. Nonetheless, the wizard elected to humor her at the very least and allowed her to say her part.

"Yes, Miss Harrington," his brow furrowed ever so slightly. "That is mostly correct as well."

While by no means a charms expert, Andrei was pretty sure the young witch needed to brush up on her etymology. This was, however, an ancient runes classroom, not a charms one. Furthermore, he suspected correcting the cabbage witch would only lead to more grief. And he had a class to teach, after all.

"As I was saying," his cold gaze shifted from the Harrington girl and warmed as it danced past that of his son. "We will be inscribing lumos onto these stones and by the end of class all you will need to do is squeeze the stone to make it as bright as a lightbulb."

He pulled his wand from within his robes and picked up the stone from his desk.

"The process itself is quite simple," the tip of his wand began to glow with a brilliant red light. "Using the inscription charm you should have been practicing you will be able to carve the requisite runes onto the stone itself."

As he spoke his wand moved in an elegantly fluid series of loops and dips causing blue sparks to cascade from his stone.

"You will find the exact process on page 24 of your textbooks," he sheathed his wand once more. "Remember, the efficacy of your runes is predicated on your intent during inscription. Lose focus for a moment and you will find your enchantment weaker than it otherwise might be. So, be sure to focus and..."

He squeezed the now perfectly enchanted stone in his hand releasing a light reminiscent of the lumos charm. Squeezing it once again, the light disappeared.

"And you will have a fully functioning lamp stone," the chalk on the blackboard scribbled wildly as it showed the proper runes to use. "So, let's get started. If you need any help I will be making my way around the room."

In the two years since she'd been seeing Professor Kessler, Mimosa had learned not to take the man too seriously. He was old and sick after all, so if he couldn't hear or understand her properly sometimes, it was okay. One day he would get better and then he would be able to see how smart she really was. Until then, the young witch would have no reason to worry seeing as she only ever ventured near the Runes' Professor once a week and that wouldn't change anytime soon.

Though the child had to admit, once she started listening, the lesson actually sounded fun. Mimosa didn't get much beyond how they were supposed to make a lamp out of their stone but both Ji Hyun and Bushrah were kind enough to turn her textbook to the right page and bring her up to speed. Squid Boy was probably confused because he'd already started fiddling with his stone, he didn't know you were supposed to read the book and the black board first.

The most difficult part of Runes for the American model had always been to match them with the normal words and text styles of today. So she was immensely glad that Professor Kessler had the good sense to write out the runes on the board, leaving her to simply copy them. Having learned to treat runes like drawings more than letters, the third year began working slowly, copying the weird patterns on her yellow gold stone as she thought about the lights of the Clement Christmas tree that decorated the main keep of the palace every December. The staff always decorated the tree but grandpere made sure they left the star for her to place.

Whenever Mimosa was a the palace in December, Jacques would lift her high up and let her put the final touches on the tree, because only a star could put a star on. And it was the flashing light of that star Mimosa focused on as she worked.
