Defence Against the Dark Arts Lesson One - Fifth to Seventh Years Empty
PostSubject: Defence Against the Dark Arts Lesson One - Fifth to Seventh Years   Defence Against the Dark Arts Lesson One - Fifth to Seventh Years EmptyThu Apr 30, 2015 7:56 pm

Despite being the first lesson back, Jake had something rather heavy in mind for the students. He hadn't done it on purpose, but he wanted to get it over with to hopefully mean they could move on to some of the more practical lessons for the future.

This meant that Jake's classroom was uncharacteristically filled with desks and chairs for his students. And, just in case they hadn't come prepared, he'd put a notebook and a pen on every desk to avoid people from trying to get out of the work.

On the board for the day was the subject they would be studying. Unforgivables. He knew many of the kids would probably never have seen them, and hopefully, none of them would ever see them again. But it was best to be prepared for the worst, and Jake was their route to doing so. Sitting on top of his desk, Jake waited for his students to file in so that they could start the lesson for the day.

Defence Against the Dark Arts was the only subject that Victoria really struggled with. The slip in to using offensive magic, and the fact you could potentially harm someone had always made it hard for the witch to enjoy the subject. But, she persisted for the sheer fact that Victoria never gave up on anything.

Heading up to her brother's classroom in the usual manner, Victoria paused to catch her breath before pushing the door open. Unlike normal, desks lined the room, and Victoria couldn't help the small frown on her features as she took that in.

But her smile resumed a moment later.

"Good morning, Jake!" Victoria greeted her brother, moving to one of the desks at the front of the room, taking a seat. With her books on the table, Victoria opened her notebook, looking to the board for an indication of what they would be studying. Her face paled almost instantly, and Victoria looked away, not wanting to dwell on the information for too long.

He breathing had sped up, and her heart sounded like it was trying to pound itself out of her chest. But she reminded herself she would be okay, Jake wouldn't let anything happen to any of them.

There wasn't much that Bella really enjoyed at school, but when it came to Defense Against the Dark Arts, she was more than happily willing to attend the class. With her backpack swung over her shoulders, Bella made her way to the Third Floor in order to attend her favorite class. Lunch had been relatively okay; there weren't many of her friends around so she had sat down with some Ravenclaw people she knew mostly by name. They were nice enough, but she really just wanted to see either Ivan or Effie. Her brother was weird, so she wasn't worried about what he may be doing, but she missed him almost as much as she missed Effie, that perverted weirdo. She held a music book as she walked towards the classroom, she had been trying to learn some muggle song she'd heard in London over the summer, but it was hard to learn it when she didn't know the actual name of the song, rather she was writing down the notes she remembered. Or what she thought she remembered.

As she held her book tightly, she opened the door to the Defense classroom and found only the Professor and his sister. Giving them both a grin, she walked up to take a spot near the girl. Bella didn't know much about her, other than she was related to Professor Newbury and that her name was Valeria or something like that, but she seemed pretty nice so there wasn't any weirdness or anything. Reaching in her bag, she took out her notebook and some quills, ready to start whatever lesson Newbury had planned for them. "Unforgivables?" Bella's blue steel eyes widened as she read the board out loud. "Are you sure we're old enough for this, professor?" She was sure the older girl was, because she was more experienced and far more talented than Bella, but Bella wasn't so sure about herself. Tilting her head to the side, Bella wondered why in the world they would even have to learn Unforgivable curses at school. Hopefully, it would all be taken from books and Newbury wasn't about to pull an Imperio on them.

Defense Against The Dark Arts was probably Peter's favorite class. With his backpack over one shoulder, Peter thought about what a fun class Newbury had planned for them this time. He liked the professor enough to respect him, so he always expected greatness from people he respected. Hopefully Newbury would never fail him. Hastily making his way to class, as he wanted to be there somewhat early, he pushed his way between the crowd of confused first years, not bothering to stay back and help. They would eventually find their way, his help wasn't a requirement.

After a few minutes, he arrived only to discover Bella, Victoria Newbury, and the professor himself. Sweet. Since Bella was sitting one seat away from the Hufflepuff, Peter immediately made the decision to fill that opening. He'd always though Victoria to be an attractive girl - smart, good-looking, powerful. However, he'd never once made an effort to start talking to her because she was exactly what he despised in society, a perfect child. Truthfully, though, Peter saw beauty in every woman he encountered, so maybe Victoria wasn't so beautiful after all.

"You don't mind, do you?" He asked the Head Girl, mostly an automatic phrase than an actual question. He obviously wasn't going to wait for her answer, and he didn't. Peter took his spot before the girl could even manage an answer. Immediately turning to the Gryffindor, he said, "I think this is is the first time I've sat at the front of the room." Shrugging more to himself than to her, Peter turned his attention to the board. Ah, the unforgivable curses! Smirking, Peter took out his DADA textbook. Of course Newbury would never fail him.

The class was smaller than Jake would have hoped for, but he didn't let that get him down. No, once the three students were seated at the front of the class, Jake checked the clock before deciding to start the lesson.

"Good morning, everyone!" Jake greeted, a smile touching his lips almost instantly. "Very good question, Isabella, the Ministry believes that you are old enough to see the effects of the spells within the Unforgivable category, so therefore today will be theory based, with a small demonstration. Of course, you will not be subjected to any of the spells yourself." Jake explained, hoping the answer would settle the witch.

"Now, Unforgivable curses, what do you already know about them? Anything you can tell me at all, and we'll work on getting a full background on the spells. Your exam could cover these curses, so I would suggest making notes if you don't intend on reading the text book between now and the end of the year."

The question that came from the Slytherin boy, Peter if Victoria's memory was right, made Victoria shake her head almost in an instant. "Of course not." Victoria responded, though the boy was already taking up the seat beside her. The Head Girl offered him a small smile before turning her attention to her brother.

Jake's confidence was always something Victoria admired, but when his confidence didn't even falter when he was questioned on the difficulty of the lesson, Victoria couldn't help but feel much more admiration for her brother in that moment. His answer was helpful, or at least, Victoria believed it to be helpful, and then they were launching in to the lesson.

Victoria had waited to see if the other two knew anything, but when neither of them spoke up, Victoria raised her hand, waiting to be called on before she spoke. "There are three spells that have been classified as Unforgivables." Victoria started to explain, checking whether the other two had raised their hands to add anything. They hadn't, so she continued.

"They are called unforgivables because casting any of the three spells is completely unforgivable, and will get you a one way ticket to Azkaban - or the equivalent of such a facility depending on the country you are in." She explained, taking a steadying breath because for once she felt nervous. "Not everyone can cast the Unforgivable curses, to create the full effects of the spell, you must truly intend on using the spells for them to work."

She paused one final time, before adding her last thought. "The Imperius curse, in my opinion, is the worst of the Unforgivable curses, because the spell allows the caster to control a person, or people in some cases, and make them do whatever they desire. The person under the spell cannot go against the wishes of the caster, unless... unless they are a very strong wizard who has mastered the capability of resisting the curse."

The Head Girl then looked away from her brother, because she didn't need to be told twice that there was going to be a demonstration, of what nature, Victoria didn't wish to know.

Jake wasn't surprised when his little sister gave such a detailed answer. Anyone who knew Victoria knew she read extensively. He nodded along with her points, not needing to correct anything she said because she had nailed it. "Well done, Victoria, very good answer. Whilst the last point is a personal view on the seriousness of the spell, everything Victoria has said is true." Jake explained to the others, making sure they knew that there wasn't any ranking on whether the spells were 'not so bad' or not.

"Now, to show you the effects of the Imperius Curse, I have borrowed a plant from the Herbology department. You might think it slightly ridiculous, but most people forget that these spells can work on other living organisms, not just humans." Jake explained, enlarging the pot that he'd borrowed. Inside was a Bouncing Bulb, and Jake tipped it out, once again performing the enlarging spell. Checking everyone was looking, Jake clearly spoke. "Imperio." He said clearly, watching the plant go motionless for a moment.

"Now, I could have the plant be good, just bounce around the front of class." Jake explained, and the plant did exactly that, not destroying anything, or hurting anyone. "Or..." Jake added, using his wand to send the plant towards the back of the room. "I could have it destroy this classroom." Jake explained, and almost instantly the plant began to trash the desks at the back, reducing them to splintered pieces as it bounced around. When it got close to the students, Jake stopped the mayhem, and returned the pod back to the front of the room.

"I'm sure, you can understand why using this against humans would be deemed unforgivable?" Jake prompted the class, hoping he wouldn't have to spell it out for them that the possibilities were endless. "So, does anyone else know of another spell?"
