Lesson Two - 1st to 3rd Years - Basic Information Empty

With a cup of coffee in hand, Ryan walked to his new classroom among the students. It was fun to see the younger students hurry off and try to get to class before anyone else, as if it were a race to prove one’s academic worth. Then there were the older students who had been through the same routine for too long to be interested anymore. Smirking, Ryan continued up the steps until he finally reached the wooded doors of the classroom. This moment should have been a stepping stone to a bigger goal, something that Ryan should take with great pride. He should have stopped for a second, admired the wood of the doors, and beamed with pride at his accomplishment. But Ryan wasn’t like that, so he quickly opened the doors and walked in, leaving them open for the students to come in.

He wrote down the topic of the lesson, Basic Muggle Knowledge, in his cursive writing. The t’s on his words were darker than the rest, while most of the letters slanted to the right in lighter strokes. He wasn’t the best at writing by hand, he would rather use magic to do it, but he liked the idea of using absolutely no magic in the class. It would enhance the feeling of what muggles went through on a daily basis. Taking a step back, Ryan wasn’t even sure the students would be able to read his markings, but he hoped it was alright.

It looked strange, to have only a few words up on the board, so Ryan erased all of it with his own hand, the white, chalky dust staining his skin. Instead, he wrote down the rules for the class.

Rules

- NO MAGIC
- Participate
- Make sure to study
- Learn about the internet
- Learn one fact about muggle life
and bring it to class to discuss
- Don’t sit alone

This was the last class of the day and then Bennett could go take a nap in the Common Room. Just one more. He had quickly registered for Muggle Studies despite being a halfblood. He was familiar with his muggle side of the family but he wanted to truly understand muggle life. He wanted to go deep into the core of their culture. It was like taking History of Magic, surely.

As Bennett made his way from the Quidditch Pitch back into the castle, he couldn't help but wonder what they would learn. Would they study traditions? Would they see the similarities between wizard life and muggle life? Would they use the internet the muggle so talked about nonstop? Bennett was excited and intrigued for this class, but he was also hungry and tired. As he reached the classroom, he found the professor and did a quick analysis. He seemed friendly enough, maybe a bit messy, but someone Bennett could stand listening to.

As he took a seat towards the front of the room, Bennett read over the writing on the board. He liked the professor's handwriting; a pretty, somewhat slanted cursive. They were just rules, though, and the first one was enough to scare Bennett. No magic? As in...no magic at all? What would they write with? No magic quills? The participation one seemed normal, as did the studying one but the no magic rule was too much already. Bennett had grown up with magic! Turning to look at the professor, slight shock still in his eyes, Bennett greeted the new face.[colo=yellow] "Good afternoon, professor Ackerman."[/color] Maybe if he was nice to the professor he would lift the no magic rule.

Muggle Studies wasn't an overly difficult subject, which was why Nirek had decided to take it. After all, it was quite easy when your family lived in a good mix of Muggle and Magical life styles. Entering the room, Nirek moved to an empty table, sitting nearest to the wall so that he could lean against that.

His eyes moved to the board, noting the rules that had been set in place. The magic rule wasn't exactly difficult in this lesson, they were learning about Muggles after all, but he didn't like the note about sitting next to someone. Well, he wasn't going to move, someone would have to sit next to him.

Taking out the book they had been told to bring, and a notepad, Nirek sat waiting, watching the door to see who else was going to come down to the class. Hopefully someone vaguely interesting.

Naomi probably didn't actually need to take Muggle Studies, since her da was Muggleborn and she spent most of her time with her Muggle grandmother and cousins, but she signed up just in case it would prove useful. Besides, she probably relied too much on magic anyway and wanted to make sure that what she did know about the Muggle world was correct. Besides, the class sounded fun.

The one downside was that Finley, as a Muggleborn, had absolutely no need for the class and therefore wasn't taking it. So Naomi walked down to class even more subdued than normal, though she smiled at the nice-looking professor.

Everything was going fine until Naomi read the last rule on the board. She blanched. Don't sit- Oh no. Normally, it wouldn't have been a problem, except for the lack of her best friend, AKA the only person in the school she was actually comfortable with. She looked at the two students already in the room. Nirek: definitely not. Well her other two options were Bennett, who seemed nice enough, if a little snobbish, or sit by herself and risk breaking one of the rules.

Beggars and choosers, Naomi told herself firmly and slid into the seat next to Bennett, staring at the table and hoping the other boy would ignore her of the duration of the class.

Finley had realised, much too late, that he had forgotten to tell Naomi he would be taking Muggle Studies. He didn't need to, being a Muggleborn meant he could probably take the exam without attending any classes. However, Finley had opted to take the classes anyway, interested in finding out what would be taught.

He had sighed to himself finding out Naomi had already left for the class, and hurried after her. He was going to have to apologise, and hope that there was a space next to his best friend that he could take up.

However, Finley was not a lucky person, so when he opened the door, he found his best friend next to Bennett. Of course, he didn't mind, and instead moved towards and empty seat in the class. Or, at least, he would have, if a voice that made his skin crawl had not made itself known so early on.

"We're not allowed to sit on our own, F-Finley." Nirek told him, the amusement of the situation quite clear in the Gryffindor's tone. Finley looked to the professor, and then to the board and felt his heart drop. There, in writing was the truth of the situation.

With a hopeful look towards the professor, Finley slowly moved to the seat, hoping that this wouldn't be true, but it seemed it would. Taking his seat, Finley made himself very small, not daring to look at his bully that sat right beside him.

Truth be told, Muggle studies was not something she particularly enjoyed. It was quite boring to have to listen to things she already knew, so most of the time, she avoided the classes. However, after her little.. conversation.. with Nirek, she needed to make sure that he not only understood but was following the terms she had given him. So, with a slight pang of annoyance, Madison found her way to the first floor.

True to her suspicions, Nirek was already there with Finley, and she hid a frown as she skipped towards the two. Nodding a greeting towards the Professor, she didn't bother to greet him - he was of no use to her - and instead took in the words on the board. There weren't any single people around the class, and that helped.

A smirk crossed her face for a split second before she corrected it to a smile and said, "Hello, Finn! I do hope you don't mind if I join you. Mum's making me take this class - Merlin knows why. It's not as if she married a Muggle or anything." The sarcastic tone showed that this was actually true, and she kept up the light banter for two reasons.

Firstly, she wanted to put Finley at ease and show him that he was not alone.

Secondly, she wanted to show Nirek who was really in control, although he didn't actually know that.

Plonking herself down right next to the Ravenclaw, she shifted her attention to the Gryffindor, and faked a look of surprise. "Oh, hey Nirek. I didn't see you there for a moment." With a light shrug, she turned back to Finley. "By the way, I was hoping you could help me with the transfiguration homework we got yesterday. It's text book stuff and I'm completely stumped!"

Leaning back in her seat with a casual smile on her face, she waited for replies from both her boys. Two games in the same room; she was in for some fun.
