PostSubject: Making Friends in Unlikely Circumstances (Zander & Victoria)   Sun Sep 13, 2015 5:00 am

The first month of university had flown by without Victoria really knowing where it had gone. The classes were simply eye opening in their vast spectrum, but Victoria was lapping up the opportunity to take all of the information in. She'd made new friends as well, many from her class, and more from the social side of the university life.

Which, in itself, had been an eye opener with 'Freshers Week'.

Victoria didn't drink, not because she was a prude, but because she found she had more than enough fun without it. And, unlike many of her friends, she remembered all of it the next day (much to her friends dismay at times).

Today, however, had been a much quieter day on the social side of Victoria's life. It had been a study day, with Victoria working tirelessly on her essay that wasn't due for another couple of weeks. To say it was above and beyond the expected would have been an understatement, but like with Hogwarts, Victoria planned on coming out top of her class - no matter the cost.

The cost - for today at least - was to lock herself out of her dorm room. Sighing to herself, Victoria gave her door one last shove before turning around and leaning against it, slowly sliding down the door until she was sat down. "So, so stupid of me." Victoria muttered to herself, trying to conjure up the memory of what they were supposed to do when they lost their keys. She knew it was going to cost her, but where did she have to go again..?

And, where was she supposed to go at almost midnight to get someone to let her in?

During his first year of university, Zander really learned what it was like to be out on his own without anything being given. There was nowhere there who would love you or make sure you weren't starving or dying of dehydration. There was nowhere there to hold your hand and pat your back and tell you that everything would be okay. This was the real world where you had to have a job if you wanted to be able to live comfortable and not die of starvation or cold.

The boy luckily, had the luck of finding a part time minimum wage job and lived well for his first year. Now, he was a month through his second year and he was feeling better than before.

That day, Zander had been out and about the town for a bit after class, visiting shops before his shift. Tonight's shift had been a bit longer, he wasn't to get off til midnight and when he had, he had the long trek across campus and upstairs to his dormitory. Usually, it wouldn't have been so bad, however, he was exhausted.

Typically when he worked this late, the corridors were quiet, due to all the students being responsible and going to bed, or at least ending their parties at a respectable time. Unlike most nights, tonight the boy walked down one of the girl's floors in order to get to his floor a bit quicker.

He didn't get halfway down the corridor before realising what was off. Zander stopped in his track, his eyes trailing to the girl who was hunched up at the bottom of a door. He could see her muttering, but he couldn't hear what she'd been saying. He found himself walking over and stooping down in front of her, all the while his heart was beating crazy due to the fact he was about to speak to a girl.

"Hey, what's wrong?" His voice was gentle as his ice blue eyes focused on her, brow furrowed.

Victoria simply could not recall the procedure for getting in to her dorm now that she had locked herself out, and was on the verge of getting herself comfortable for the inevitable night's sleep in the corridor. Of course, she could have gone to a friends room and asked to stay the night, but at this time of night... There was simply no way she was going to disturb her friends for a moment of stupidity.

However, it was a moment later that someone spoke, and Victoria's head whipped up, searching for the source as a smile graced her lips despite her situation. "Hi!" The witch greeted the man before her brightly, thinking of how to answer his question. Well...

"I forgot my key this morning, so I locked myself out my dorm. And, I've forgotten who I need to see to get back in, but I'm sure it's only in usual working hours. So..." Victoria paused, eyebrows furrowing as she thought through the solution. "I'm going to have to wait here until morning then go and find out what I need to do." She summarised with a soft sigh.

The boy slid down the door until he was sitting aside the girl. He felt that from down on the floor, he'd be able to hear her better, plus to him, it seemed a more respectable thing to do as opposed to standing over her, hovering. He was sure it would make her a bit more comfortable, well, as comfortable as possible since there was a random guy sitting with her, outside her dorm, at midnight.

"I'll wait with you," the boy smiled to her, hoping he came off as nice and concerned as opposed to creepy. "I'm Zander," he introduced, assuming an introduction wouldn't hurt if they'd be spending all night together.

Her situation was a tough one, as he didn't believe alohamora would work on doors that weren't magically locked. Unless they broke in, they'd have to look for the guy that had access to all of the dorms. "Maybe we could try to pick the lock?" Zander's eyes focuses on the girls as he shrugged his shoulders, sort of as a way to show her it was only a suggestion.

The offer from the young man to stay with her made Victoria shake her head in an instant. "Oh, you really don't have to! I will be more than okay!" Victoria insisted, hoping she hadn't made herself a burden on him. "I'll be more than okay on my own until the morning, you'll be so uncomfortable waiting out here with me... I couldn't ask you to..."

The introduction made Victoria blush a little, she'd been quite rude and not introduced herself. Cursing herself inwardly, the American witch tucked her hair carefully behind her ear. "I'm Victoria, Victoria Newbury. It's lovely to meet you, Zander." She replied to the introduction, hoping he would forgive her rudeness in that moment.

The suggestion of picking the lock made Victoria look up to the door in thought. "Do you not think they have some kind of magical seal, or something to stop that happening?" Victoria asked, though she was uncertain on that point. "And... I've never picked a lock, so I would have no idea how you would do that..." She added a moment later, not managing to keep the small look of wonder off of her features at the idea of learning something new.

Her eyes moved back to Zander a moment later, a smile on her lips as she lowered her voice. "Have you picked a lock before?" She asked, wondering whether the boy might be able to help her out.

"I insist," he said, looking eye to eye with her. Perhaps if he had been Veela, he could have been compelling, someone who could make her accept the fact that he'd stay with her no matter what. "I'm sure you'd enjoy the company," he added on, nudging her. If she wasn't okay with it then he'd leave, but he really preferred to sit and give her company, or perhaps, it'd be her giving him the company.

"Pleasure to meet you Miss Newbury," he greeted her, pretending to be a bit more proper than he actually was. In that moment, there had been a hint of German in his voice, but just as quickly as it'd come, it'd gone. She was a sweet girl, he'd admit, and to him, it was such a shame for her to be in this predicament.

"Then maybe, Alohamora would work, if there's magic on the door? Either way, it couldn't hurt to try," he smiled towards the girl. She seemed to be curious about his lock picking skills, which to be honest, he lacked. "Do you have a small hair pin?" He had seen people in movies pick locks with hair pins so maybe he could do the same thing?

When the girl smiled and lowered her voice, he couldn't help but give a little chuckle. "No, but I've seen it done in Muggle movies and I've read a book about it," his eyes lit up as he answered her.

Victoria's blush crept up her cheeks a little more at the idea of enjoying the company. She couldn't deny that company would be very nice if she was going to have to sit out on her own for the evening, but she would never insist upon someone sitting with her. "Well then, I guess I should thank you for being a gentleman." Victoria said brightly, not being sarcastic about it, but truly meaning the thank you in that moment.

The idea of Alohomora working made Victoria's eyes widen. "Why... did I not think of that?" Victoria asked, feeling highly stupid in that moment for forgetting about being a witch and more than capable of doing that. Fumbling in her bag, Victoria pulled out her wand (one made of a wood that naturally grew with a pink hue, but not one she could remember the name of) and pointed it towards the lock.

"Alohomora!" The witch tried in that moment, before pushing on the handle. It worked to no avail, and Victoria turned back to the young man beside him. "Perhaps a little too easy for people to break in if that would have worked!" She jested, slipping her wand back in to her bag.

The question on a hair pin made Victoria sift through her bag, taking a few moments to move the copious amount of items around until she found her stash. Taking one out, Victoria handed it to the boy with a smile. "Here you go." She told him, hoping that this would work.

"Muggle movies?" Victoria asked, letting out a soft chuckle. "I didn't think that was actually a way of opening doors, I thought it was for comedic affect... I guess we'll soon find out!" She explained, moving out of Zander's way so he could give it a go.

"It's an honour, really," Zander insisted. For a pretty girl like her, he'd do whatever he could for her to make her life easier. The blush on her face was noticeable, in fact, there was no denying it, and for a moment, he wondered if he was blushing as well. It was odd behaviour for him to not be nervous from talking to her. Usually, girls made him extremely nervous, he wasn't exactly sure why, but they did. He'd start stuttering and he'd turn bright red before he'd have to turn away and forget the girl, but with Victoria, everything was different.

"Perhaps because you were just in distress," he said gently, cautious not to offend her in anyway but to merely inform her of his opinion. He watched as she fumbled in her bag to find her wand before she cast the simple spell. However, it did not work and he agreed with her. "It would make robbery extremely common and pranks too." At least now they both knew that security was not a need for the University.

He found himself a bit thankful when she handed him a pin, yet at the same time, he felt a bit nervous. Would she laugh at him if he couldn't pick the lock? Would she be upset? Mad? What if he did get it open, what happened next? Would they just go about their own business like the never met or would they talk for a bit longer? These were important questions that needed answers, but he couldn't find it in himself to ask.

Her chuckle was what brought the blush to his face as his thoughts shifted to thinking about how adorable she was. "I guess we will," he added as he turned to kneel in front of the lock once she had moved aside.

The idea of being in distress over the situation made Victoria pause for a moment. "I'm not usually easily flustered..." Victoria told him softly, feeling a little embarrassed for losing her head over something so trivial. After all, it wasn't life or death, only a comfy bed for the evening. "I'm sorry." She added a moment later, because she really didn't want to come across in the wrong light.

"As if there aren't enough pranks!" Victoria said, letting out a soft giggle. "Especially the first week, Merlin I don't think I've ever seen so many pranks in one place!" The witch explained, shaking her head at the memories before she remembered what they were doing.

Whilst Zander started to pick the lock, Victoria stood out of the way, allowing him space to work. After a few moments, however, Victoria felt a little useless, so she decided to try to help if she could. "Would you like me to do anything?" She asked softly, hoping not to distract him from the work.

"It's okay," he reassured her, "it's after midnight and you didn't know what to do.I would've been the same way," the boy admitted. He stressed out over the smallest things and something like what Victoria was going through would have caused him great distress, to the point of panicking and pacing the hall. However, he wouldn't admit that much to her.

Zander chuckled, "I remember what that was like," he said, thinking back on his first year. Now, his age group didn't often play pranks, but usually, the first years take advantage of their first week of school. "First year, huh?" he directed towards her. "I'm a second, but it doesn't feel like it." The fact that the past year had passed by so quickly was a shocker for him.

The boy had all of his concentration on the lock when Victoria spoke. "Oh, uhm, I'm not sure there's anything you can do to help," he thought, his brow beginning to furrow, "but maybe you can sit here and keep me company?" He chuckled as he winked towards her, a huge grin across his face.

The insistence that it was okay to have panicked made Victoria smile a little bit. Usually she was quite good with being in control of herself, but tonight was different. Not that it mattered, Zander was here to help and it made her feel much, much better.

"Yeah, it's my first year. But I'm loving every minute of it so far." Victoria told the man beside her with a smile. "I'm doing my degree in Muggle and Magical Law." Victoria added, hoping that wouldn't ruin their impending friendship because she was quite adamant that law was going to be her field of work. "What are you studying for?" Victoria asked, truly interested in the choice of the man beside her. For a moment, she guessed Potioneer, because he looked like that kind of person, but Victoria wasn't sure at all.

Not being able to help wasn't something that Victoria liked, but she couldn't help but chuckle at the wink in her direction. "I guess I can do that." Victoria replied sweetly, completely oblivious to the flirting that was going on. "So, how come you're up so late? Party?" Victoria asked, though her eyes were trained on the lock, willing it to open.

He was glad to see the smile on her face. By the looks of it, his job of reassuring her had worked and she no longer felt bad about having been distressed. Zander returned her smile.

Her confirmation of being a first year made Zander nod. For being a first year, she seemed to have her life together pretty well. "Law?" he questioned, quite impressed with the girl's choice. "Impressive," he added, his head turning to look at her, his eyes lighting up. If she was studying Law, it meant she was smart and for some reason, intelligence on a woman was quite attractive. "Auror," he answered her question, tasting the word on his lips.

He chuckled at the sound of her chuckle, glad to see she didn't resist being there to keep him company. "Well I'm sure glad you can, or else I'd have to find someone who could," he chuckled towards her once more. "Actually, I was at work," he smiled shyly. He wasn't exactly the partying type, though occasionally he wouldn't mind being invited to some sort of social event, but he never was. "What about you?" He hands fumbled clumsily with the lock.

Hearing a click, he jiggled the knob, but it wouldn't budge.

The comment on law was one that Victoria wasn't sure of to begin with, but the moment he said it was impressive, Victoria couldn't help but blush. "Well... I wanted to get a firm grounding in the law before I move on to remaking it with equality in mind. For different species, and the like." Victoria explained, not caring if anyone thought it was impossible. To the witch who had been told at the age of eight that she would never walk again, nothing would seem impossible ever again.

"An Auror?" Victoria asked excitedly. "My brother works as an Auror, and teaches. But it's such a good job! I bet your parents are so, so proud of you!" She gushed, her smile showing the sincerity of her statement in that moment.

"Where do you work?" Victoria asked Zander the moment he'd told her. Curiosity was something that came naturally to Victoria and she had never seen anything wrong with working hard - whether that was studying or otherwise. "Me? I was in the library looking up the latest laws on centaur roaming rights." She admitted. "Was quite fascinating, actually."

When the click came, Victoria's eyes shot back to the door, and holding her breath when Zander tried it, Victoria couldn't help but not want it to open so she could keep talking to him. Her luck - or perhaps misfortune depending on what angle you looked at it - was in that evening, because it didn't open. Letting out a small sigh, Victoria gave a shrug. "Never mind, you tried. Thank you." Victoria told the man beside her. "Looks like I'll be sleeping her tonight! You really don't have to stay, I'll be fine!"

He nodded his head in order to show her that he understand exactly what it was that she was saying.

He smiled, "I guess I'll be meeting him soon won't I?" The boy gave her another look and smiled, wondering what her brother looked like. From the girls looks, it seems like the family had some pretty good genes, or at least Victoria was lucky enough to get the good genes if not. At the mention of his parents, the boy stiffened. He never spoke about his parents much, but he felt the need to let her know. "I wish I knew," his arms dropped down beside him and he sat back on his heels, his body now facing hers, "I lost my parents when I was five, grew up in an orphanage in Berlin." He didn't tell her to make her feel bad, but merely because he felt the need to talk about them as it had been entirely too long without their mention.

"A small Muggle bookshop, out in the main streets of London," he said, answering her next question. Her curiosity didn't bother him, in fact, he appreciated it. For the first time during his years of university, he felt like he had someone who cared and it was nice. As he listened to her explain why she was up so late, he smiled, "It does sound pretty interesting."

The boy was quite glad that the door didn't budge, though he felt like he had let her down. "I'm sorry," he turned to her, a look of sadness in his eyes. At the sound of her sigh, he frowned a bit more, "No, no, I can stay, or" he paused, "I can even offer you my bed and I'll sleep on the floor or the couch." The boys dorm would be empty as he didn't have a dormmate, but he didn't exactly expect her to take his offer, especially since they just met.

"I'm sure you will!" Victoria replied. "His name is Jake, he's been in the Auror division for... two years now, I think." Victoria explained, trying to think if that was correct, she was quite sure it was. "He loves his job, but it does worry me." The witch admitted, though she was sure that Zander would understand that.

However, when Victoria realised she had put her foot in it, her face dropped, a saddened expression taking the place of her usual smile. "I am so sorry, I didn't realise..." The American witch insisted, not really knowing what to do in that moment. But, even though she didn't know, Victoria reached out for Zander's hand, giving it a small smile. "I'm sure, wherever they are, your parents are super proud of you though." She told him, giving him a small smile in the hope of making amends.

"A bookshop? That has to be one of the best jobs in the world, especially with Muggle literature! Merlin, I think I would read the whole store if I had such a job!" The girl explained, letting out a soft chuckle at the idea. "I don't have a job at the moment, my brother pays for my tuition fees because he wants me to concentrate on the studying." Victoria explained, giving a small shrug.

The offer of staying in Zander's room made Victoria pause for a moment. The very obvious trouble - to anyone except Victoria - was not thought about in that moment. The only trouble Victoria could see was the burden she was turning in to the more they spoke. "I really couldn't accept such an offer from you, Zander. That would be asking way too much of you..." Victoria replied, though in complete honesty it sounded so much nicer than the corridor. "Unless you let me sleep on the floor, so I'm not putting you out any more than I already have, and I promise to be out of the way the moment I'm awake!"

He smiled, feeling a bit excited to meet the girl's brother. Maybe he'd be lucky enough to have him train him. "It's understandable that it would worry you," Zander said softly, taking in the girls features, her long hair and her soft, doe-like eyes. "It's a dangerous career."

"It's okay, really," he reassured her, "in fact, it feels like a relief to be able to talk about them." The boy gave her a sly smile. To most, his parents seemed to be forgotten, but to Zander they were his life. Everything he did, everything he said was to discover what exactly happened to them. The girl's hand reaching to to his was a sweet gesture, one that made him smile and want to hug her, but he didn't. Though he did smile as her next phrase. He too, was sure that wherever his parents were, whether dead or alive, they were extremely proud of him.

"It really is," the boy said, sharing Victoria's excitement. "I've read a majority of the books already," he admitted sheepishly. He knew she wouldn't think him a nerd as she just told him that she would do the same, but for some reason, he still found himself embarrassed. "That's really great," he smiled to her. He had been awarded scholarships to pay for school but he enjoyed having the extra money, especially since he'd have to have money to take his girlfriend out, if he ever got one.

At her suggestion, he found himself rolling his eyes and chuckling. "I could never let a lady sleep on the floor." He was far too much of a gentleman to allow Victoria to sleep on the floor just as he was far too much of a gentleman to push himself onto her like other guys would. While it would be nice to finally have a girl in that way and in any way really, the girl was far too nice for that, besides, Zander would like to actually keep her as a friend and not make her hate him. "At least take the couch," he replied, "or I camp out here with you."

"I know it is..." Victoria replied softly, trying not to think about it too much, but failing. "He recently got injured on a mission... he was... lucky." The witch explained, a small crease forming on her brow. "But, he's a fighter, he's always been a fighter, and he'll always come through." The determination, and certainty in her voice showed in that moment, and a smile touched Victoria's lips once more. Whatever Jake might do, whatever he got up to, Victoria was sure he would always pull through.

"If you want to talk about them, I'm always here. If not now, then another time. I don't mind." Victoria assured the man beside her with a smile. She could never imagine losing her parents, the thought was horrible, but Victoria would do her best to help Zander if he needed her to.

"The majority? Wow, that either makes you a speedy reader, or the bookshop isn't as big as my imagination thinks it might be!" Victoria replied, her smile showing she meant it good naturedly and not in a mean manner. "I'll have to pop by some time and get your recommendations on good reads!" She added, hoping that it wasn't impertinent of her to suggest such things.

"It's nice of him, yes..." Victoria replied to Zander about Jake's generosity. "But I plan to pay him back, every penny." The American witch insisted, because she really didn't wish for Zander to think she was just going to take the money.

"Okay, okay. I can't ask you to sleep out here, so I'll sleep on your couch. I'll be out of your apartment first thing in the morning though, I really don't want to be anymore hassle than I have already been." Victoria said, giving in to his wishes. "And, you must let me repay you for your kindness, at some point. You really have been way too kind to me."

"He is lucky," Zander agreed, "but he also sounds like a very, strong man, which makes you lucky." He thought about what it would be like to have an older sibling that worked a job like that. He also thought about what it would be like to have someone that was protective of him, someone that loved him and cherished him and would do anything for him. He knew his parents did, but he'd been raised without them so he didn't remember what those feelings felt like, especially since he was brought up in the orphanage. Looking at Victoria, he could see a girl that was loved and well cared for and he smiled, happy for her.

"Thank you," the boy replied, looking to the girl. Her eyes held such kindness and a hell of a lot of promise behind them. It was eyes that he could get lost in but he chose not to. He didn't really need to creep out his new found friend, not yet anyways. "It's really kind of you Victoria," the boys voice was soft, maybe too soft but he didn't care.

He nodded. "Well both sort of," he chuckled. "It depends on how exciting the book is," the boy shrugged. At her suggestion of stopping in, his smile grew and his eyes lit up. "You should," his exclamation made him blush, "I mean, I would love to help you." He could feel his face growing a bit red at being so excited to be around her.

"That's a very honest thing for you to do," Zander admitted. People who payed you back were the best kind of people, whether you wanted to to pay you back or not.

He smiled as he listened to her finally agree. "Just don't tell your boyfriend," he chuckled, "I wouldn't want to be beat into a pulp." Pretty girls like her had boyfriends right? If not, then he would surely be shocked and even more nervous to speak to her. "I'll see," he smiled, not feeling the need for her to give him anything in return. Finally, he led her towards his room already thinking about the breakfast he'd make for her in the morning.

The blush from Zander made Victoria wonder for a moment why he was blushing at the talk of seeing him at the book store, but Victoria decided not to question it, it was probably not something worth worrying about, anyway.

After giving up on the notion of getting in to the room, Zander had commented on a boyfriend, and Victoria let out a very soft giggle at the idea. "Oh no." Victoria said, shaking her head at the thought. "You're quite safe in that respect. I've never had a boyfriend." The witch explained, smiling warmly. To her, relationships were something that had missed her, they had happened to her friends, but Victoria had never been in a relationship. Not that she minded, she studied way too hard for such things to get precedence in her life.

"The only men in my life are Jake and my daddy." Victoria insisted, following Zander to his room. "And, both of them are great, so you're quite safe." She finalised as they entered his apartment. After a quick show of the places she would need, Victoria had thanked Zander once more, and made herself comfortable on the sofa with a blanket, thanking Merlin for the luck she'd run in to with her new friend.
