The first lesson of Flying had not been as Jake had anticipated with split years, so he had put his classes back together. Hopefully this way there would be more achieved in a lesson. Debating on what to do for the lesson had taken a lot longer than he'd anticipated, but only because he currently had a lot on his mind.

Mostly, however, it was concern about his girlfriend.

Veronika had been sick recently, and hence she had not been able to teach. After a period of sick leave, an extended sick leave to catch up on everything she needed to do, Veronika had been on her way back to teaching the current term when beautiful news had greeted them.

They were expecting their first child.

As of yet, Jake had not told his family, wanting to make sure nothing went wrong in the early days, especially with Veronika having been under the weather, but he was, simply put, glowing with the news. The first day he'd found out, he'd been utterly shocked, as it hadn't exactly been planned for now, but as each day passed, Jake felt more and more happy about the prospect of being a father.

But, the thought was quickly pushed from his head as he set up the Quidditch Pitch for his lesson, trying to keep the smile from his lips so that people wouldn't ask.

Naomi's broom was slung over her shoulder and she was dressed in a comfortable sweater and she was headed to class with Jake; today was a good day. She skipped along happily beside Finley, grinning. The weather was clear and she couldn't have asked for a better day for flying.

The pair of Ravenclaws approached the pitch and the professor and Naomi was just about to call out a greeting when she felt a vision start. She grabbed Finley's arm, trusting him to lead her while she was blind.

A wall, a pale cream color...

Dust motes whirling through a beam of warm sunshine...

Sun, burning in a white-blue sky and the sound of birds in the trees above a meadow...

A flash of short, brown hair and a kind smile that resolved itself into Jake, clearer now that he had appeared in her visions before. Beside him, a flash of longer, darker hair and the high pitched wail of a baby's cry, coming from a blurred patch of light blue. The beautiful picture slipped away as she watched-

-leaving her once again on the Quidditch Pitch, looking at Professor Jake in real life. A grin split her face. He and Professor Hollands were having a baby! Most likely a boy, from the coloring.

"Congratulations on the news, Jake," Naomi piped without preamble, not feeling self-conscious, since there was no one else around to hear. "Professor Hollands and the baby both seemed pretty healthy, which is great!"

Finley had - quite happily - missed the first lesson of Flying under the premise that he was busy with other homework. But now that Professor Newbury had joined the classes back up again, Finley had found it too hard to say no to Naomi, so he hadn't tried to say no.

Walking down to the Quidditch Pitch beside his best friend, Finley was hoping the class wouldn't be too hard this lesson because he was more than certain he wasn't going to do very well at it.

Just as they were about to get close to the professor, however, Naomi held on to him in a manner he knew meant something wasn't right. So, rather than tensing at her touch, Finley moved to support her as much as he could, worry touching his features instantly.

Whatever it was didn't last very long, however, and the moment Naomi came back to, she was talking to Professor Newbury about... a baby... tilting his head, Finley looked to the professor, wondering how that could have happened... It took nine months for...

Finley's eyes went wide a moment later though as he realised what Naomi had just said, looking to Professor Newbury and then blushing at the realisation of what happened for that... well, to happen.

Lux made her way to the quidditch pitch, her day getting better at the thought of being up in the air. Flying was probably her favourite class. The thrill of being high above ground sent adrenaline pumping through her veins. The constant risk of falling and breaking her neck made it better. Not that she'd ever fallen. In fact she made it a point to go higher every time she climbed onto her broom. There was little else that could compare to free-falling.

She could already see three people gathered, two of whom were students. As she approached the group, she thought she hears something about a baby. She didn't hear the whole sentence but definitely the word baby. Why would they be talking about an annoying piece of flesh? Unless...the professor had a baby? Well, not the professor but whomever he was with.

Lux rolled her eyes. She wouldn't congratulate him. Having a baby wasn't something to be happy about. They were nothing but a crying stinking pile of work. She would know, having had to take care of the babies at the orphanage. She greeted the professor politely, said nothing else about a baby and stood to one side impatient for the class to begin.

As two very familiar faces entered the Quidditch Pitch, Jake couldn't help but smile a little warmer. Whilst he knew he shouldn't have favourites, he did, and he couldn't help it. However, his smile wavered a little when he saw Naomi lean in to Finley in more than a joking kind of manner. Moving forward to help, it seemed Naomi had righted herself before he could be of use.

And the words that came from her mouth made Jake's face fall.

Mostly with confusion because he didn't have the slightest idea how she could know about that yet. But then his memory kicked in, out weighing the shock of the situation. A small smile touched his lips as he processed the second part of what Naomi had said, throwing a huge weight off of his mind. "Thank you." Jake murmured in response, putting a finger over his lips in a manner he hoped Naomi would know that it wasn't yet known by the rest of the school.

Another person had arrived, but Jake didn't elaborate on the situation, simply smiling at the new arrival and waiting for more people to turn up.

Once again, Nirek found himself heading outside for lessons. The Gryffindor was excited for Flying, after all it was something he did quite well being one of the Chaser's for his house. He'd missed the commotion from Finley's girlfriend, turning up just after it all had happened.

He noted the girl from Herbology, and seeing as the only other option was the Stutter King and his Queen, Nirek didn't have much choice but to stand by the Slytherin. True, there would be a rivalry because of their houses, but Nirek was popular, and he could pull off an alliance with a snake, of that much he was sure.

"Professor." Nirek greeted the man at the front of the class, wondering how many other people would be heading down for today's lesson. Hopefully not too many, then they were likely to do something a little more fun.

Evelyn had never been on a broom but she read a book about how to fly which was the same thing right? Actually, she hadn't just read books on flying, she literally read books about anything and everything, enjoying whatever was written on the pages in between the two covers. If anyone ever actually thought about it, the girl was the stereotype of a typical Ravenclaw.

As she walked out onto the Quidditch Pitch that was now, covered in snow, she mumbled a bit about how all the classes seemed to mostly take place outdoors. As her winter coat flapped behind her in the slight wind, feelings of anxiety rose among her. She wasn't one for trying new things, especially something as dangerous as flying. She could fall and hurt herself or even worse, die.

Like her other classes, she greeted her professor before she turned and went to stand near the back of the class. Several other students were there, but none of them seemed like first years, which didn't help her small feeling of anxiety.

As a couple more students arrived to class, Jake smiled in their direction. At least one of the students was new, but he was happy to have people of different abilities in his class.

Seeing as it didn't look like anyone else would be attending his class, Jake decided to get on with the lesson. "Good morning everyone, I hope you're all doing well?" Jake posed the question, though it was rhetorical because there wasn't time for an individual answer.

"Today, we will be doing... well, whatever you feel you need help with. As everyone is of a mixed ability, I would like you to tell me what you need help with, and I will teach you how to do it. Or, if you think you're good enough already, I'll show you how you can improve. Remember, I've played professionally, so I know a lot about Quidditch, and flying. Bring me any technique, and I'll show you how to do it." Jake insisted, before remembering. "If you haven't got your own broom, please collect one from the shed. Once you're ready, come and talk to me and I'll get you started on how to do what you want to know."

Lux grinned as the professor said that he would be teaching them anything they needed help with. She had been expecting a set lesson but this was way better than she expected. The one thing she wanted to learn and improve was doing tricks in the air. She'd tried a couple of times to do loops and tight zigzags but couldn't get them quite right, especially the loops. She could get relatively high and fast but once she reached the peak of the loop, she couldn't come round to make a full perfect circle.

Lux's main concern was that doing tricks were...well, trivial and not quite necessary, but it was something Lux wanted to do for the thrill and excitement. Not knowing if she should ask the professor about it, she took her time with her broom before deciding she should just ask. The worst he could do was say no, right? And he did say to bring him any technique.

Raising her hand and approaching him, she posed her question in as polite a tone as she could manage. "Sir, I'd like to learn to do a few tricks like loops and zigzags. Would that be alright?" She would be disappointed if he said no but she would also understand. If he did reject her request it would simply mean more hours of practice for her.

When the first person stepped forward, Jake gave the witch a warm smile, hoping to be encouraging towards the Slytherin so that she felt comfortable. Especially seeing as she was new to his class.

Her query made Jake smile, nodding as she explained what she wanted to try. "No problem!" Jake replied, grinning a little because this was an interesting choice of topic for the evening. "But, you don't need to call me sir, Jake will suffice." The professor insisted, summoning his own broom from the ground.

Mounting up, but not taking off, Jake made sure the Slytherin was watching. "When you're at a good height - to begin with, I would suggest the height of the Quidditch hoops, to be safe - you need to get your broom level." Jake explained, showing her with his broom flat, parallel to the ground. "You will need speed, so lie yourself flat to your broom, and for a good... ten meters, gain as much speed as you can."

As he spoke, Jake showed the witch, not moving, but showing the different positions she should take on to be successful. "Then, once you're at a good speed, you nee to pull back, lock your arms straight, hold tight to the broom, and lean back as much as you can. Your speed will keep the momentum going, your weight - I'm not being rude - will pull you around the circle. You need to keep your arms locked until you're just over three quarters of the way around the loop, then you need to flatten yourself to the broom for the final pull round to finish the loop."

The professor smiled towards the Slytherin. "Does that make sense? I can try the first one with you, if you would like, talk you through it?"

OOC: You may GM Jake doing the loop with Lux if you would like to, but it is not a necessity. He will call out the main points, i.e. "Keep yourself flat... Hold it... Hold it... Pull back!" throughout the flight.

If Lux wants to try it on her own, that is also fine!

But most of all, have fun with it!

Evelyn's anxiety was steadily on the rise every minute she spent in this class and when Professor Newbury started class, she gulped. She could feel her heart begin to race , the pounding causing her chest to clench up, her breathing to become deeper. She shuffled up to the Professor so only he could hear her. "Professor," the first year squeaked out, "I don't think I'm comfortable on that," she pointed to the broom that was laying beside her.

She had completely embarrassed herself, not in front of the class, but in front of the professor and to her, that was just as bad. She was sure to fail this class and if she did, her life could never grow worse because failing was the most dishonourable thing that existed.

She was nervous about flying, but she was even more nervous to see what the professor's reaction would be like. Would he just tell her to get over herself? She couldn't do that. She was a reader, not an outdoorsy, athletic person. She could feel a sting in her eyes but she refused to cry, not here, not now.

When the next person came to him, Jake once more gave the new witch a warm smile. The explanation that the witch wasn't comfortable on the broom made Jake nod once. Moving to the broom, Jake brought it back to the witch, laying it down on her right hand side very carefully.

Kneeling before the first year so that he wasn't towering over her, Jake began to explain how to go about riding a broom. "The first thing you need to know about riding a broom, is that a broom always likes to be told what to do. So, as long as you know what you want to do, you will maintain control of the broom." He explained. "Now, take your right hand, and place it above the broom, palm down." Jake explained, showing her what he meant with his own hand.

"Now, to get control of the broom, you need to say 'up'. But, you need to say it like you mean it, and just really think about it coming up in to your hand. Think you can do that?" Jake asked the witch softly, his smile encouraging her to give it a try.

Lux grinned at the first two words out of the professor's mouth after she posed her question. We're gonna get some action today she thought, the corner of her lips quirking up in anticipation of what she was about to learn and do. She knew she might not get it perfectly right the first time but with enough practice, she knew she could accomplish it.

Listening attentively to the directions and tips Jake gave her, she repeated them to herself mentally, making sure never to forget them. Her eyes took in his demonstration and she nodded once he was finished.

"Some coaching would be good. Thanks Jake," she replied as she mounted her broom, adrenaline pumping through her veins at the thought of being up in the air. She took a steadying breath before taking off to the height Jake suggested, using the Quidditch hoops as her guide. She flew to one end of the pitch to give herself enough space. Knocking into another flyer was the last thing she wanted to do – right now.

After glancing down at Jake to confirm she was in a safe spot, she got into the position that he showed her and sped up, going faster and faster, reveling in the feeling of freedom. She didn't quite know how long ten meters was and relied on the instructions Jake called out to her. Hearing him calling to her to pull back, she kept her arms straight and leaned back, feeling herself start to make the circle. She held on, seeing the world rush past upside down and feeling her blood flood her head, until the cue came from Jake to flatten herself. A little disoriented from being upside down, responded too late and instead of making a perfect circle, it was a mutation of a circle and some other shape until she got herself upright again.

Swearing profusely under her breath and hoping no one heard her but not caring either way, Lux made a turn back to the starting point, determined to try again. She set her jaw and kept herself steady before accelerating once more. You can do this. She made the turn upwards, starting the circle and leaning back as much as she dared, keeping a tight grip on the broomstick. In her head, she imagined the circle she was forming and approximately when she would need to lean towards the broom to bring herself around. Now? No. Little bit more. Now? You can't be too late again. Now? Her sparring thoughts weren't doing anything to help with the disorientation she was once again feeling with being upside down.

She wasn't expecting Jake's cue but when she head him call out to her to flatten herself, she closed her eyes against the dizzying rush and leaned towards her broom, opening her lids once she was upright again. She noted her position and pursed her lips although a little part of her was rejoicing. She had come close to making a full circle. She hadn't quite ended where she started and had instead made an oval with a sort of tail. She'd just have to practice more but for now, Lux descended to the ground and dismounted to take a breather.

The idea of practicing what they were not very good at made Finley both relieved and anxious. Admitting flaws was not something Finley was unaccustomed to, oh no, he could tell you a full list of things that he was rubbish at. But it was the idea of picking one thing to work on that made him anxious - which part of his flying would he need to work on?

Watching the Slytherin girl go first, he could see that Jake was busy, so he hung back, waiting to see what she needed help with. It didn't take very long to find out as she took to the skies, Finley watched her intently from the ground, hoping she wouldn't hurt herself. Jake seemed to have it under control though, and soon moved on to the first year, Finley once again waited, before shuffling forward once they were done.

"Umm... P-. Jake." Finley said, making sure to have the man's attention. "I w-wondered..." The Ravenclaw paused, looking back to Naomi who was a very good flier, and probably thought his flying was abysmal. "I was w-wondering how you g-go fast on your b-broom whilst keeping c-control of it." Finley continued, his eyes not quite meeting the professor's because he felt silly admitting he couldn't do something so simple.

"W-when I go f-faster, I seem t-to lose the control of the b-broom, but I'm not s-sure why." He finished flatly, hoping that the professor would have an answer, and not turn him away as a lost cause.

Jake could not deny that he was immensely proud of Lux as she took to the sky, whilst he didn't know much of the witch, he was quite sure his students were not stupid enough to ask him to show them something they weren't both confident in trying, or at the right level to try in the first place.

But what Lux was about to attempt was difficult, even for the very skilled fliers.

Watching her take to the sky, Jake called up to her the best he could with instructions to follow to perform a perfect loop. He wasn't expecting perfection, of course, but you would have to be taught right from the start if you wanted to achieve that with time. After the second attempt, Jake couldn't help but grin up at the witch triumphantly. "Well done, Lux!" Jake called up to the witch once she'd finished the loop.

"You can keep practicing if you want, but don't do too many too quickly, otherwise you'll get a head rush!" He added, his voice raised higher than many of his students might have heard before so that it traveled up in to the air high enough.

When the next student came to him, Jake smiled at the boy beside him, lowering his voice so that he and Finley could have a private chat despite the others there. Nerves were something Jake had looked in to upon noticing Finley's stutter - something a number of the professors were trying to help the Ravenclaw with - in the hopes he could be a little bit more help to the boy.

"Well, Finley." Jake started softly, trying to make sure the boy knew he wasn't thinking badly of him for asking a question the Ravenclaw no doubt thought to be silly. "It's to do with confidence in your broom skill." Jake told the boy, not for a moment saying the boy didn't have it, because Jake knew that he did, somewhere.

"You're capable of flying, quite well, at slower speeds. Which is absolutely fine." Jake assured the boy with a smile. "So, you just need to know that, here." Jake pointed to Finley's head. "That's all that is stopping you, I can assure you of that much. So..." Jake reached out for one of the school brooms and held it between himself and the Ravenclaw.

"Tell me, Finley, what can you do?" Jake prompted, raising an eyebrow when the boy faltered for a moment. "Okay, repeat after me: I can fly, and I can fly fast." Jake told the boy.

Finley looked to the side for a moment, but Jake held the broom out still, waiting for the boy.

"I c-can fly, and I c-can fly f-fast!" Came the Ravenclaw's response, with an uncertain smile.

"Again, a little louder." Jake prompted, grinning at the boy, oozing enthusiasm.

"I c-can fly, and I c-can fly f-fast!" Finley repeated once more.

"Now, get up in the sky, Finley. Repeat those words, and gradually get faster. I believe you can do this, so now I want you to show me." With that, Jake let go of the broom, allowing Finley a little space to get himself ready for the class.

Naomi watched the other students asking for help, doing a little warm up flying. She did listen to Jake's instructions to Lux about loops, deciding that she might try one towards the end of class. She grinned proudly as Finley moved forward to ask about flying faster. When Jake was done with Finley, Naomi touched down lightly.

"I'm having some trouble with tight turns, especially the faster I'm going," she explained. "Do you have any advice? And after I practice that for a while, I'm going to try a loop, like Lux. I heard your instructions for that."

Naomi hoped Jake could help her. Her turns were always overly wide and it bothered her. It was one of the few ways her flying wasn't great; she could handle everything else but the sharp turns. And hopefully, those wouldn't be a problem soon either.

The next question that came made Jake think for a moment, sharp turns were something he could do, but it was something he'd just... done. Thinking about how he did it, Jake took up his own broom, mounting it but not kicking off the ground, motioning for Naomi to do the same.

"So, when you normally corner, you lean a little, and ease the broom around with a gently pull of the broom in the direction you wish to go, right?" Jake asked the witch, though it was a rhetorical question. "To do a sharper turn, you need to exaggerate the latter, pull the broom harder, and bring your speed right down - I know that seems weird if you're going fast, but trust me.

"The slowing down makes the turn easier for you, you will need to hold on tightly to the broom, and really show it what you want. You might do... kind of like a skid but in the air, the first couple of time you try it, because your broom will think you're trying to stop and then turn, but stick at it." Jake tried to explain, along with a small demo on the spot.

"And, you can try the loop, but go careful." Jake told the witch, giving her an encouraging smile.

Class Now Closed.
