- Smooth talker/charming; this comes with the job, really, and he can smooth talk himself and his people out of many a situation, and also to get what he wants.

Weaknesses:
- The song of a Pheonix; while rare, the rumours that it strikes fear into the hearts of the evil is apparently true, although Lawrence has never told anyone how he knows.
- Sob stories; while his heart may be somewhat hardened, there is still a gap in which certain stories can slip past and touch him, but it is difficult to say which.
- Closed-mindedness; he seems to think that stereotypes are accurate – not mainstream ones, but the ones that he himself coins up about those he’s met.

Background

Born on a beautiful day, just as the sun began to set, Lawrence was welcomed to the world by a nurse and a pair of smiling people – his mum and dad, who had decided to use a surrogate witch so that Savannah could maintain her looks and they could still have an heir. Raised with only the best tutors and instructors, Lawrence grew up learning how to be poised, and move with all the grace that a Pureblood should have.

When he was three, his sister was born – again through a surrogate witch – because of his mother’s insistence that growing up alone was ‘not good for one’s social wellbeing’. Growing up together, Savannah’s words were proven true when the two formed a close bond. Lawrence always saw himself as a protector for his little sister, and she looked up to and admired her older brother. Everywhere they went, they insisted on being together, even ending up in the same house – Slytherin, although as a Hughes, that was a given.
Excelling in everything, the pair very quickly graduated, with Lawrence going on to University while Teala prepped for marriage, rather unhappily; while in Hogwarts, she had met and fallen in love with a Muggle-born wizard, a kind Gryffindor with the brightest blue eyes, a lopsided smile, and the kindest heart she had ever gotten to know. Lawrence, knowing of their dating, kept it a secret, secretly helping his sister send letters to the boy during the holidays.

Fulfilling her duty as required, Teala was never truly happy for her first two years of marriage, until suddenly, one day, a tiny baby bump showed up. The two families rejoiced. 9 months later, the baby was born and at once Lawrence realized something was wrong – her husband had hazel eyes, but the baby girl, Kaitlin, had familiar bright blue eyes. At once he knew the truth, but, quickly performing a concealment charm, handed the girl over to the parents.

Confronting Teala the next day, he found out the complete truth – for the few months before the baby came, she had been secretly seeing her boyfriend from her Hogwarts days. The two formed an unbreakable vow that this would remain a secret between them for life.

Exactly a year later, news reached Lawrence that shattered him in his entirety – Teala’s body had been found in her home. No blood, no mess, it was clear that a certain forbidden spell had been used. Beside her, lay the ex-Gryffindor, whose name has been wiped from all accounts – his identity remains a closely guarded secret, with him being referred to as ‘the muggle-born’ by both families.

Kaitlin was found, alive and in a mess of her own poo, screaming in her cot, unharmed. At once, without consulting anyone, he apparated with the girl to a court and charmed a judge to grant him full custody. Nobody knows what promises were made or what deal passed between the judge and Lawrence, but he left two hours later with Kaitlin listed as his child.

An investigation was carried out by authorities, but nobody was ever caught or charged for the two murders – in Lawrence’s mind, there was no doubt who did it. His parents, on the other hand, quietly swept everything under the rug, not wanting the fact that Teala had been ‘unfaithful’ to get out. Due to this, he pushed aside all thoughts of getting a wife and instead focused on his daughter.

Joining the Ministry a few months later, he worked his way into office, and, by the time he was 29, became the Minister of Magic. Running office was something he was good at, and gained the support of many people.

Kaitlin, meanwhile, grew up in the MoM, from sitting in Lawrence’s lap as he did paperwork for the then Minister, to running around his office chasing an enchanted paper plane as he worked at the desk. A complete spoilt brat, she gets what she wants when she wants, because all Lawrence can see in her is his beloved sister.

As of now, she is 9, and, having been already given the best education money can buy with the best tutors, she is more than capable of passing the first two years of Hogwarts with flying colours.

Family Background

There really is nothing much to say about the Hughes – as it always is, it was arranged. Garrett picked Savannah from the list of possible suitors (of which there were many) mainly due to her looks; Savannah never was and never will be among the brightest witches. A faithful servant to her husband, she does as he wishes, when he asks. Vain, she refused to carry a child of her own, instead insisting that a surrogate mother be used – Garrett, loving his wife only for her beauty, did as she wished. There is no real love between the two, and no real friendship, either. The only thing there is that can be said to exist is a mutual understanding.
