Background

To say that Lyra had a difficult childhood was the understatement of the decade.

It wasn't for her parents' lack of trying. Katy and John had done their best to pamper Lyra. They bought her toys, books and the latest gadgets, and whenever Lyra was interest in a certain hobby, they hired instructors for her without thinking twice. It was due to Lyra's zest for life that eventually had the Browne's favouring her over Luc, and though Lyra often tried to be on Luc's good side, her older brother pushed her away.

Soon, Lyra started to experience various accidents. Sometimes she would randomly fall down the stairs, and there were times when she would discover cuts and boils on her arms. At first, the Browne's thought it was just due to Lyra's fatal clumsiness, but they soon discovered that Lyra was actually quite graceful, as she was considered to be the best ballerina in her school. The injuries from her accidents soon prevented her from pursuing a career in ballet, and at seven years old, Lyra had to accept the fact that she would never become a prima ballerina.

It was perhaps all for the best, since her parents had their sights on naming Lyra as the heiress of the oil company. Though Luc appeared to have great leadership skills, Katy and John feared that their firstborn was too impulsive to be a CEO. Lyra, on the other hand, was the sophisticated younger daughter who did well in school, was well-liked by most people, and had a variety of hobbies and interests which they were sure would impress her future universities. At eight, Lyra's future was set in store for her—she would keep attending the elite school and then move on to either Cambridge or Oxford, and eventually marry another corporate heir who could strengthen their family's connections.

Lyra didn't mind. For her, her family was the most important thing above all, and it made her happy to please her parents.

Life, however, was full of surprises, and the biggest one came in the form of a man who talked to her parents about a school Luc could go to. Though her parents avoided talking about it in front of her, she knew that it was a magical school, and that Luc had the blood of a wizard. For once, it was Lyra's turn to envy her older brother. The idea of magic actually existing almost made her go mad—until her eleventh birthday, all she could think about was if she had the blood of a witch, and whether she would be allowed to go to the magical school as well.

She didn't even notice how in Luc's absence from home, her random injuries and accidents also stopped.

When the letter came to let her know that she was accepted as a Hogwarts student, Lyra had to be calmed down by her parents for once. Though she hadn't screamed (as screaming was just uncouth and declasse), she couldn't stop talking rapidly and asking her parents questions about the pets she could bring and the classes she would take. With Lyra's excitement came the realisation that the Browne's would be parted from their daughter, and it was with much reluctance and a heavy heart when they let their daughter go.

Despite being the younger daughter, Lyra, as the family favourite, is being prepared to take over the company someday. Her excellent marks in school made her parents think she would be more responsible, and besides, it seemed to the family as if Luc was not to interested in becoming a future corporate name.
