James was not the kind of man who believed in love. It existed, of course, but he was not the kind of man who believed that love held a place in him as a person. So, when it had come up on the syllabus that he must concoct the potion with his students, he had not been happy. To spend time with people who were recounting the smell of the people they loved, or the things they loved.

This was not something he wanted to do, hence he'd chosen to do it first, get it out of the way, and forget he had ever had the misfortune to teach it.

Looking down at his magazine - a potions subscription - James waited for the classroom to fill up, and for the sound of the bell that would signify it was time for him to get on with his work. Until such a point, he would acknowledge nobody, and by now, the older years would know not to annoy him with their mindless chatter.

Lux took her time walking to class, knowing she was very early. Although not fond of potions, she did not hate the class and quite enjoyed it actually, because the professor was amazing. But of course, she didn't mean his teaching; she meant his behaviour. It was very fascinating to have a professor who seemed to care about nothing for his students and who seemed to be perpetually having PMS. It was a refreshing change from the rest of the usual professors and for that very reason, Lux did not hate the class.

She walked into the room and smirked when she saw the professor, not bothering to greet him and knowing he would not appreciate it either. She took her seat and as she waited, pondered upon whether the professor actually liked potions. Well, he was reading a magazine on it so maybe he did. Then it had to be the fact that he did not like teaching it that made him so...moody. Or maybe it was just teaching them. But it didn't matter to her. She liked the professor's rudeness; it suited her just fine.

Mei Xin entered the classroom and saw the professor reading a magazine. This professor confused her a little and she never knew how to behave or what to say when she was around him. She paused for a while, debating within herself if she should greet him. The training drummed into her by her parents to respect her elders screamed for her to at least say 'hello' and yet he didn't seem to want to talk to anyone.

Deciding to stay true to her culture - she could just see her mother's frown if she didn't greet the professor - she moved her feet forward a little hesitantly. "Hi professor," she said, a small shy smile on her face. Conscience eased, she made her way to a desk, taking one near the front.

Potions was a touchy subject to her. She didn't have trouble with following the instructions and her concoctions usually turned out well. What she struggled with was how precise everything had to be. Whenever she cooked, which was quite often, she never followed any recipe. Cooking was always agak-agak, an estimate of every ingredient with no set recipe and instead relying on one's sight, taste, touch, and intuition. As such, she found potions rather restrictive, having to measure everything out carefully wasn't as fun as tossing a bit of this and a bit of that. But it was the way things were done so she had to get used to it.

[[OOC: http://www.peranakan-kl.org/?page_id=216 More insight into the agak-agak method of cooking. Very Happy]]

Potions was one subject she didn't quite mind, only because it was easy; she didn't need to focus or think, because following instructions were super easy. Anyone with half a brain could do it, and so, naturally, she found it boring as well. What was the use of doing something that only required following a set of steps? If she could get someone to do the work for her, she would, but in class itself, she had to attend and do the things for herself, something unfortunate.

Still, as she slid into class, taking a seat, she frowned. Finley wasn't yet there. Placing her stuff on the seat next to her to book it for her boyfriend, Maddie turned to the front of the class, looking for any hints on what they would be making, and came up blank. There wasn't anything written on the board, nor were there any sample potions on desks or a list of ingredients.

Sighing lightly, she made no movement to greet the Professor or say anything to him, simply because she knew that he wasn't one for small talk or polite conversation. That was, at the very least, a redeeming factor for this class.

Potions was a tough class, all Arden was hoping was that he passed the class with flying colors but he knew that the moment he walked into the classroom there was no messing around. Fellow classmates were already in there and waiting for the class to start, but then Arden let his eyes set on the Professor and he knew this Professor didn't like messing around. There was no doubt in that. Arden loved the Professors tough, that would mean they would push him harder and that was the first sign in him passing.

The young Ravenclaw sat in his seat and waited for the class to begin, he just hoped that he didn't get any points deducted from his house because they needed all the points they could get. Slytherin had won the previous year and it was time for the Ravenclaws to take back the points and he was going to try his best to get as many points as he possible could.

The young Hufflepuff never really knew much about potions but she knew the concept of it and that was all that mattered to her. Arden was better at school then she ever was and that would never change, but it didn't mean that she wouldn't try her best to try and be like Arden. In a way she hated being a twin because Arden was like the child her parents had always dreamed about having, but she loved her brother to death and would do anything for him if he had asked her to. Yes her parents loved her just as much but sometimes it didn't feel like it.

After shaking those thoughts out of her head, she walked into the classroom and tried to gain some kind of confidence but it wasn't working. Anyone with a nose could tell she hardly had any, but in a way she did have a lot. The young girl took the seat next to her brother and waited for the class to begin.

Though Gabrielle often didn't understand how love and all that crap worked, sometimes she felt like she understood it whenever she was on her way to Potions class. Nevermind the fact that Professor Balan barely paid attention to her (or to any of his students, for that matter)—he was a genius, perhaps the only one she had ever looked up to, and it was always a pleasure to be in class.

They weren't able to meet and discuss her Draught of Hope before the last schoolyear ended, and so Gabrielle looked forward to that moment after Potions class when she could ask him for an appointment. She couldn't wait to hear what he thought of her theory and ingredients, and if there was anything she could do to improve her experiment. Of course, there were times when Gabrielle was scared of Professor Balan—she sought his approval, after all, and so sometimes she dared not approach him out of fear of being called a failure.

But she wouldn't let that fear take over her, not today. Not when it was her last year, her last chance to impress him and learn from him. Holding her chin up, she walked into the classroom and politely smiled at Professor Balan. 'Good morning, Professor Balan,' she greeted. As she walked towards an empty station, she felt a sense of determination surge through her. She would get an O in this class when the year ends, and she would soon move on to become one of the brightest Potioneers the wizarding world had ever seen.

Potions was tough but it was a good class for Kaleb. He loved being challenged and accepting the challenges. It was a great thing for him and no matter what he was going to succeed in what he did. He needed to when it came to school and no matter what it was going to happen. Kaleb was just entering the class when he saw that there was a few people in the room. He made sure he had his potions book and when he found it in his bag he was glad he didn't have to go back to get it. That would take a little bit for him because he wasn't the fastest person in the world.

The Gryffindor entered and took a random seat in the front of the classroom. He didn't care if he was in the front, back, or middle. A seat was a seat to him.

Violet had a love-hate relationship with potions, or rather the teacher. Yes, she did enjoy potions thoroughly, but the teacher... In all fairness, she deserved the detention that she received the year before, didn't mean that she had to like him for it. Then again, she didn’t really like anyone all that much, so it was nothing new for her.

She was in no rush to get to class, she knew that she had plenty of time, and her common room was pretty close, so she sauntered in and took her usual seat at the back of the classroom and didn't bother to acknowledge anyone, taking out her equipment to be ready for the lesson. She was curious as to what potion they’d be learning this lesson, as there was no indication of which potion it was.  She did hope that it’d be a challenge, and she had no doubt that it would be, considering it was Professor Balan after all.

It was Potions again and Verena wasn't sure whether to be glad or bored. She was never excited for a lesson, so that was out of the question, but if it was good enough, it could at least intrigue her. And Potions did intrigue her, but not because of the subject or the Professor. But because of one specific person she was sure would be there before her.

Gabrielle Fontaine.

The Ravenclaw nerd that she had been paired with quite a few times in the past. The only person smart enough to work with her, yet she got on Verena's nerves more than anyone in this world. Not even her sister could get her that worked up. And it was frustrating to say the least. But this was exactly why she was so drawn to that Ravenclaw. Because she had that something that made her blood boil. It made her want to stumble upon her and drive her mad.

So Potions were the best choice, as she slowly made her way through the Dungeons and towards the Potions Classroom.
Pushing the door open, she walked inside without a word, only giving a small nod of acknowledgement to the Professor.

The girl scanned the classroom until she spotted her friend, Gabrielle, and made her way to her with an evil smirk. At least there was going to be a bit of fun.
