For the first few years of his life, Ryan didn't have a family. He jumped around from one care home to the next, never knowing who his real parents were or why they weren't around. It wasn't that Ryan was an ill behaved child; the homes just didn't know how to handle him. He wasn't like the other children. He opened the closet doors, and he lifted the teddies from the end of the bed without touching them. Once, he started a fire in the kitchens when he was upset - and none of the homes were able to keep him very long.
Then he met the Magness family.
His first potential adoptive parents. Ryan, at age six, had grown to be hostile, distant - he rarely associated with the other children, because he knew he wouldn't know them for very long. He met the two strangers for the first time on a Wednesday - Ryan remembers it vividly; he was called inside from his "exploring" (walking through the bushes on his own) and told to change into his nice clothes, because there was someone who wanted to meet him.
Once changed and scrubbed up, Ryan was left alone in the room with the lady and the gentleman. They tried to talk to him - ask about him, about his friends, but all of the little boy's answers were short and shy. Josephine and Alexander fell in love with him anyway - they signed all the papers and it was agreed that they would have a probationary period with the boy in their home, six weeks for him to settle in and then there would be a review.
The two had a daughter of their own. Selena, her name was - a little girl with blonde hair and a toothy smile that made Ryan's skin crawl. She bounded towards him when he entered the house for the first time, her arms around his thighs as she embraced her new "brother".
It took an alarmly short time for Ryan to settle down. After a few days, he'd adjusted to having a little sister - someone who followed him around and stole chips off his plate at dinner. They shared a bedroom - mind, not a particularly big one - but he came to care for her like she was his real sibling. Sometimes, he liked to pretend she was.
It only took a week before Josephine and Alexander phoned Ryan's previous home, asking for the review to be brought forwards. He was family, now - and once the papers were signed and his name changed, Ryan Thomas became an official Magness.
Up until he was 10, Ryan attended the local juniors - he attended classes to catch up with the work he missed, and he actually enjoyed school. Ryan liked to learn, and he took an immediate liking to PE - favouring football and tag rugby over everything.
Until sitting his SAT exams at the end of year 6, Ryan never thought of himself as anything special. It wasn't until the end of the test period that Josephine and Alexander sat him down to talk about what they'd noticed - what he was, the names on his file at the agency. Why his parents weren't around, and why he woke up that morning with all his socks on the bedroom floor.
Ryan was a wizard.
His acceptance letter came a few days later. Ryan had been invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he would learn about magic and how to control his powers. Of course, Josephine, Alexander and Selena all knew of the magical world, a part of it themselves - but they had been determined to keep Ryan's life normal for as long as they could.
Throughout his Hogwarts years, Ryan came out of his shell. At first he was the quiet, shy boy - just as he had been when moving around care homes as a child. He made a small ring of friends in his dormitory - the four Hufflepuff boys made a friendship deemed unbreakable - who boosted his confidence and made him all over a much happier person.
In his third year, Ryan tried out for the Quidditch team. The running he did in his free time and the mild resistance training he did whenever he could gave him the edge, making the team as a reserve beater. It wasn't until the first line player dropped out after a head injury that he became a real member, but Ryan was elated nonetheless to be able to play.
It wasn't until his sixth year that Ryan realised, once again, that he was different. His friends, always out on dates with the pretty girls in their house, brought it to his attention one Saturday evening. They asked why he never seemed to date, why he hadn't kissed a girl. Ryan then concluded that it was becausehe'd never wanted to.
Ryan didn't want to be kissing, or dating, or having sex with girls.
The boys all hugged him, and told him he had the bravery of a Gryffindor with the heart of a Hufflepuff - promising him that they'd always be there.
And they were.
Even after they graduated and went their separate ways, the four boys stayed friends. They met for coffee, or beer - or attended Quidditch games together. They played in a Sunday League of Muggle Football after Ryan introduced them to the sport, and they remain the best friends he's ever had.

Ryan's real family are something of a mystery. Josephine and Alexander knew of them - knew the names Annette and William Thomas. A muggleborn wizard and a halfblood witch, both of whom had been on the run for a time that no-one in the world knew of. One day, they had been there - in their little cottage with their two month old son, and the next, he was on a doorstep and they were long since gone.
They had fled at the first notion of another wizarding war. Annette's initial hesitation to leave her son behind had been swayed by her husbands promise of his safety, that he would be better off with a muggle family where he'd never be found. With new names, new identities - Colleen and Frank Riggett - they disappeared from the country and were never heard of again. |
