Potions Lesson 2: Years 1-4 Empty
PostSubject: Potions Lesson 2: Years 1-4    Potions Lesson 2: Years 1-4 EmptyWed Oct 18, 2017 9:35 pm

Walking down the halls of Hogwarts gave him a feeling of nostalgia for it all looked the same as it did seven years ago. The ghosts recognized him and asked him about what he was doing; even the naughtiest ghost did so. The only difference he saw was in the staff; they were clearly younger and unfortunately not many were people he knew. Still, when the headmistress reached out to him, he found himself accepting before even realizing he had. The idea of returning to Hogwarts was too great to miss.

When he reached the dungeon, he took it all in; after all this was once a great passion of his. Sitting at his temporary desk, he leaned back and waited for students to enter. He waved his hands in the air, as if he was composing, so his name would be written on the board.

Mycroft Holmes

For the younger students he had a simple enough lesson to go off of:

Undetectable Poisons

Waiting patiently for the students he wondered how this would go.

When Clara entered the classroom, she was surprised to see an unfamiliar man sitting at Professor Andersson's desk. She was generally out of the loop when it came to gossip and personal drama, so she had no idea why Professor Andersson wasn't there, but she dismissed it as none of her business. Glancing at the board, she did a double take at the name. Mycroft Holmes? Sherlock's older brother?

Having read a great deal of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's short stories (and "The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter" being among her top ten favourites), Clara was quite familiar with the name, and found it curious to find someone in real life with it, despite its extreme obscurity outside of the Sherlock Holmes universe. Was he named after the character? It would be strange if he was...he wasn't a very major character in the books, although some film and television adaptations gave him a larger role. Even then, he wasn't the most popular character by any means. But then again, the likelihood of it being a coincidence was just as low, if not lower. "Mycroft" by itself was an incredibly rare name. What were the odds that the one person she met named Mycroft would also just happen to have the surname "Holmes," just like the character?

It was certainly notable, in any case. According to the Von Restorff and Self-Reference effects, she wouldn't be forgetting this class any time soon.

She decided that was probably a good thing, considering the subject outlined on the board. Poisons were fascinating, and a good thing to remember. Not that she expected to encounter them much, if at all, but there was just something so intriguing about killing someone without them noticing. Poison was used in less than 0.5% of murder cases, but women were seven times more likely than men to use poison as a murder weapon. She wasn't sure where that statistic had come from, but it popped into her head when she read the board, so she filed it away under "relevant but superfluous information."

Clara saw that she was the first to arrive, so she quietly took a seat near the front, and set her stuff down, settling in to wait for the class to begin. She was looking forward to this.

Was potions no longer a mandatory class or did everyone simply ditch it? He was genuinely surprised at the fact that out of the whole school, only one bothered to come and attend his lesson. He refused to let it bruise his ego, but rather decided to take advantage of it. When the bell rung signifying it was time to start, he got up from behind his desk, and plopped himself atop of it.

"Good Morning Miss" he smiled. "Since it seems it's just you and I this morning, let's make sure that this is a riveting class. Now, my name is Mycroft, but you can call me Holmes, Myce, just not Professor."

He figured he should be honest when teaching, so he took out a seemingly boring and uninteresting looking phial. At first it looked like clear water just added to it and put it right on her desk before explaining.

"This is the deadliest poison mixture, Deuterium oxide, or heavy water with Tetrodotoxin. Are they the most interesting dynamic or the most interesting looking? No absolutely not. But they are the most toxic mixture due to the clear look and the normalcy where one could find it. Now my first question to you is this: Why would an undetectable poison be considered a useful lesson. And please spare me the whole killing thing. Be creative." his eyes were bright, curious to what the girl would say.

Revenge was a dish best served cold, or so the saying went. Gaspard would be sure to put that into his calculations for his plot to get even with his dorm mates. Just because he didn't want to talk to them didn't mean he was stuck up. He just found it pointless for their little 'heart to heart' of 'getting to know one another'. It wasn't as if their names would stick in his brain. Nor was he about to buy into the whole 'your house is your family' thing. Because he was being honest and had left them to it, they had thought it would be fun to alter his alarm clock. If it had been a class other than the one he had first thing, he wouldn't have minded. As it was one of his favorites that he was looking towards, that was unforgivable.

Seeing the closed door once he had made his way to the dungeons Gaspard felt his irritation rise. This was not a good way to start off the day nor for first impressions. Scowling, he took a deep breath, schooled himself, and carefully opened the door as quietly as he could in time to hear the explanation for the liquid in the professor's hands. Why the man was sitting atop his desk, the boy shrugged off as a personal quirk. There was a table at home that he found most relaxing for laying on to study which caused his mother to resignedly give in and let him use it.

Heavy water, that was something he'd heard before but couldn't place it. His eyes lit up in interest as he glanced quickly to the board and read what was written there. His mind shunted information around in his mind and he glanced back at the teacher wondering if he would mind if he answered even though the question hadn't been directed at him and he was late for the class. He had to bite his lip to keep from blurting out the answer he would give.
