Hair colour and style: Long, dark brown, and dirty, Rurik’s hair falls down to his shoulders and always seems to have twigs, dirt, and leaves in it. For formal events that he deems worthy, however, one will find his hair carefully combed out and sometimes pulled back in a bun. He also often sports a full unkempt beard that never seems too conducive to taming.
Eye colour: Two pools of forbidding blackness, Rurik’s eyes might be described as feral in the extreme were it not for the glint of intelligence that appears in them from time to time.
Height: Towering above his peers at 6’ 7” those who know Rurik speculate erroneously that his height is due giant blood flowing through his veins.
Body type: Muscular and hulking, Rurik’s body tells the tale of a man who has dedicated his life to strictly physical existence. Each limb is tightly packed with well-defined muscle and one will struggle to find an ounce of needless fat on his body.
Dress sense: Modern trends and fads of fickle fashion mean nothing to this man. Instead he can often be seen wearing some form of well-worn outdoors attire if not the skins and pelts of hunts long past. Truthfully, given his attire, the man would look more at home near the frigid arctic circle than in the hustle and bustle of London.
Birthmarks: ---
Tattoos: Etched into the skin of his right bicep one will find seven rings of black runic text written in the Elder Futhark script. The significance of this skin-art is a closely guarded secret of the large man as it is a more than sentimental work.
Scars: If one looks long enough it seems as if one cannot go more than a few inches before finding a scar on Rurik’s body. Most of his scars, however, are small scratches and pale in comparison to the ghostly white line that runs from the base of his throat past his collarbone and down to his right pectoral. This scar is one he owes to a less than cordial run in with a harpy.  
Piercings: His left ear has three small gold ringlets in it.



Likes:
  - Nature, raised in rural Sweden Rurik came to love the simplicity of nature. In nature there are no rules to follow save for the survival of the fittest and this appeals the man. Indeed, he often finds himself wondering how different the world would be if people spent more time outdoors in what—he would argue—is their natural habitat.
  - Magical and non-Magical Creatures, along with his affinity for nature comes a love for the creatures that inhabit it. Big, small, magical or not, Rurik is often more willing to show emotion around animals than he is around humans.
  - Hunting, wait…hunting? He likes nature and animals, but also enjoys hunting?!? What kind of madness is this? Perfectly logical madness, in fact. While Rurik respects both nature and the creatures within it he also willingly fills his role as the apex predator. The thrill is something he finds unmatched by any other human endeavor. None of this is to say, of course, that he hunts for sport. No, rather he hunts out of necessity and makes sure each and every piece of his quarry is put to use after the inevitable conclusion of a hunt.
  - Dueling, magical or otherwise gets Rurik’s blood pumping. Much like hunting, a good fight gives him the adrenaline rush he craves and, moreover, it can pay the bills if worse comes to worse. He’s never one to turn down a chance to fight and will sometimes even go looking for them.
  - Alcohol, sometimes the ability to blunt the world’s sharp edges gets the better of Rurik. Ok, well, a lot more than sometimes. He always has a silver flask on him filled with some concoction or another and it seems as if his paychecks tend to evaporate at the bar.
  - Solitude, while by no means a shut-in, Rurik is not an extrovert by nature. From time to time he needs to be by himself to recharge and recalibrate.

Dislikes:
  - Urban Life, the world of electric lighting, running water, and indoor plumbing never sits well with Rurik. He much prefers sleeping under the stars and as far away from sleepless cities as possible. Unfortunately, his job requires that he occasionally return to the city making him, at times, irritable and cagey like a confined animal.
  - Politics, ah yes, the arena of scum and villains. Rurik despises politics and the bureaucracy attached to it. He never understood the need for tact and honey laced lies. Perhaps this is why he has never risen past his current job position in the ministry despite his effectiveness in his particular line of work.
  - Weakness, every one has them and Rurik does not begrudge people that. No, rather he disdains those who are ruled by their own weaknesses and use them as excuses. Weakness is expected, after all, but being defined by said weakness is not.
  - Cowards, the worst kind of weakness. Those that shy away from a challenge are worse than scum in Rurik’s eyes.
  - Attachment, relationships never end well for Rurik, so he doesn’t bother with them anymore. In fact, he will often go out of his way to end any relationship that has gone on too long.

Strengths:
  - Physical Prowess, if his height were not imposing enough, Rurik also knows how do handle himself in a fight. Moving faster than it seems he should be able to given his size, Rurik can pick apart most anybody in a fist fight—a rare trait for any magic dependent wizard.
  - Survival, his colleagues jokingly call him the ‘cockroach’ because no matter the situation or the environment, Rurik always seems to find a way to survive. Whether it be in the deserts of the Middle East or the tundra of Siberia, the large man always comes out on top.
  - Runic Magic, mastery of a wand is all well and good, but it is no use for trapping. To create the long lasting magical traps that his line of work requires he has become proficient in runic inscriptions. While he couldn’t even begin to tell you the history or story behind the runes he can tell you how to work with them and, for him anyway, that is what matters. Practicality over theory every time.
  - Elemental Magic, fire, water, air, and earth all bend to the magical will of Rurik. While his mastery of fire in particular is the most potent, he has come to be quite resourceful given that he is constantly amongst the elements. After all, survival means using what one has on hand and the elements, it seems, are always on hand in one form or another.

Weaknesses:
  - The Fairer Sex, need more be said?
  - Money Management, saving means nothing to Rurik. His bank account is chronically empty, but he always seems to scrape by—anything to avoid asking his father for money.
  - Public Speaking, eloquence is not a gift Rurik possesses. At best he is good for a rousing toast or a battle cry, but nothing more.
  - Academics, books, essays, and teachers never appealed to Rurik, so he never bothered with such things. As a result he can seem a bit less than cultured than those around him as his knowledge comes from doing, not reading.

Positive traits:
  - Confident, onwards and upwards! With a strong belief in whatever he does, Rurik can often give off an aura of command he realistically lacks. Those around him, however, don’t often know this.
  - Decisive, right or wrong, he will follow his inclinations without fail. Sure, this can lead to some less than favorable situation, but more often it works out well for him.
  - Loyal, to call Rurik a friend is a rarity only a few have truly earned. However, once said title is earned he will not waver from a friend’s side even in the hardest of times.
  - Methodical, everything he does have a reason or at least it does when he starts out. He has a tendency to make plans only to alter them in the heat of the moment due to evolving circumstances, but hey at least he has some idea of what he’s doing.

Negative traits:
  - Uncompromising, there is no middle ground or gray area for Rurik. You’re either with him or you’re against him, end of story.
  - Short Tempered, sporting one of the shortest fuses in all of London, he is liable to go off at even the slightest annoyance. This temper is, however, absent when dealing with animals for which he seems to have infinite patience.
  - Obsessive, upon sinking his teeth into something he never lets go until he has had more than his fair share. This is most apparent in his work where he will spend hours upon hours teasing out the location of the latest magical beast outbreak only to spend another series of hours containing said outbreak. Perhaps this trait is why he is such a successful hunter.
  - Callous, soft emotions have no place in Rurik’s heart, they died with his mother. He scorns those who show their emotions and tries his hardest to not associate with such weak people.



Each had their reasons, but neither Sven and nor Amelia could have been happier with their firstborn, Rurik. Amelia loved Rurik as a mother should while Sven loved him as a collector loved a beloved painting or, perhaps more appropriately, a prized stallion—a son was invaluable to carrying on the family name, after all. While a far cry from the elite families of Europe, the Magnusson name carried with it a regional prestige in Sweden and allowed Rurik a privileged childhood. Two short years after his birth he was joined by his younger twin sisters, Hilda and Freya, then three years more brought his last sister Heather into being.

In 1999 the Magnusson family, under the direction of Amelia who wanted to be closer to her dying mother, relocated to London. And so, life continued for the young family, everything seemed peachy keen. Rurik got along with his siblings and both parents doted on him. It was also around this time that the young boy began spending more and more time outside taking to bugging his mother to take him on trips to the countryside. Simply put, the Magnusson household appeared to be a model family and the envy of the neighborhood.

When the time came, Rurik received his acceptance into Hogwarts like his mother before him. Sorted into Gryffindor, he excelled in his first five years at the school. During this time, he showed a particular affinity for Herbology and Care for Magical Creatures during these years. Plus, he had more friends than he could count, even taking up the role of beater on the house Quidditch team. Yes, everything was going well for the boy.

Well, it was until it wasn’t.

In the summer of his sixth year at Hogwarts disaster struck the family. Amelia, lovely blue-eyed Amelia, died in a car accident. This shattered the Magnusson household as each remaining member of the family coped in their own ways. Sven found shelter in drink and began arguing with his only son. Their arguments ranged from the mundane to the extraordinary, but they always ended in a bitter shouting match.

Rurik’s last year in Hogwarts amounted to nothing less than a slow-motion implosion. He shunned his former friends, dropped off the Quidditch team, and his grades tanked. The only aspect that remained of his former self was his love of nature, which he took solace in for hours on end between classes and even during them. Somehow, he made it through this year at Hogwarts, but he knew he could not continue his education.

His father begged to differ.

Sven had already pulled some strings to get his first and only son into university. Upon Rurik’s return this fact became a point of contention leading to further flaring of tempers. This tinderbox finally exploded on the day the young man was supposed to leave for university. He told his father he would not be going and the two exploded into a huge argument, which only ended with his father giving him a black eye.

And so, Rurik resigned himself to his fate at University.

Focusing on magical creatures, Rurik spent a year at University before he left without informing his father. Instead of returning home and by the recommendation of a University Professor he joined a group of hunters for hire who acted as what was essentially an international mercenary group for beasts gone awry. He remained with this group for six years before returning to London in search of work.

At one point he found himself at his old family’s home only to find his father had moved without telling him—Rurik had not stayed in contact with any part of his family during his time abroad. Luckily, lady luck smiled on the large man when he found an opening at the Ministry for a man of his particular skill set with magical creatures in the department for the regulation and control of magical creatures. In Rurik’s case he focused mostly on the control aspect of the department and for the past four years has scratched out an existence as a lowly ‘hunter’ for the wizarding government of England.
