Runes Lesson One - All Years - Page 2 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Runes Lesson One - All Years   Runes Lesson One - All Years - Page 2 EmptyMon May 11, 2015 11:12 am

Alberi was done with all the stairs at this school. They moved, had trap steps, led to no where and what not! Just as he was walking to Ancient Runes class, he had his foot trapped into one of the trap steps. When he tried to escape, it seemed as if his foot only got stuck in more deeper than before. After ten minuets which will surely make him late for class, an older student instructed him how to escape. After that he began to walk to class. He wasn't going to run. The boy was already late, why waste energy over running?

The boy guessed that he would like this subject. Ancient Runes... It was very interesting! If there was one thing he liked learning, it was languages. And Runes were technically a type of language, he supposed that he will do well in it. The book itself was also interesting.

Soon enough he arrived. With a sigh he opened the door. "I apologize for coming late, professor..." just then he noticed that it was in fact the director. Really? From all the days he could have this problem, it was with the guy who literally owned the place. "May I please sit down?" he asked before examining which places were free for him to sit.

Dan's eyes grew wide when the professor announced that they'd be learning the rune for the fire element. With any luck, they wouldn't actually be using fire since Dan wasn't very comfortable being close to it. He cocked his head when the rune appeared on the board. It did look a little like a flame, if a very crudely drawn one--though, most runes were likely to be very crude representations of their meaning.

He sighed heavily when wooden bowls appeared and they were instructed to carve the rune into the inside of the bowl. Dan was sure he'd manage to hurt himself. One thing he was certain of, though, was that he'd have better luck if he sketched the rune on the wood before actually carving it. So, he pulled his quill and ink from his bag and began to slowly draw the lines of the rune, double checking with the example on the board for good measure.

Once the outline was set, Dan grabbed the tool they were to use and began slowly chipping away.

As the door opened, Daniel looked across to see a late arrival. With the size of the child though, Daniel determined that the boy must have been one of the younger years, and thus didn't get angry. The castle was huge, and navigating it was almost impossible for the first years.

"It's okay." Daniel assured the boy with a smile. "Just try not to be late again, and we'll say nothing more about this time." He added, motioning for the boy to take his seat somewhere in the room. Whilst the boy moved, Daniel levitated a bowl to the boy's desk.

"If you can try to carve the rune in to the base of the bowl, you'll catch up with the rest of the class." Daniel explained, motioning to the board to show the boy what he meant by the rune. "If you have any questions, please ask, but you'll need to copy the notes from one of your fellow students."

Layla held her breath as she pushed opened the door. She wasn't horribly late, but she was late and that's all that mattered. She had walked around the school several times, getting stuck on several staircases before she had finally asked a Prefect for help. At that point, she had wanted to go back to her room and finish the song she'd been working on, but she didn't want to let down her parents by failing. Despite it being her second year, she had new classes this year on undiscovered floors.

She entered after another boy who seemed to be late. She was able to hear the professor speak to him as she tried to sneak past them and take a seat, not being seen. She didn't want the attention focused on her, not right now anyways. These robes were anything but stylish and she hated being seen in them. The worst part about her having been late, was that the professor was the headmaster. She wanted to facepalm at not leaving sooner or scouting out the room the day before.

When the younger Hufflepuff accepted her presence beside him, the older witch smiled. "Thank you." She replied to the boy, genuinely meaning it as she got her things out for the lesson. Quite soon the lesson was starting, and Victoria was writing down her notes quickly but neatly.

Victoria was quite happy with the lesson, elements were pretty fun, and if she was correct in her ideas, they might actually be applying magic to the Runes. Which, if they did, would be very, very interesting. Of course, Victoria was only speculating, but she hoped that that would be what they were doing.

When they were set to the task of carving the rune, Victoria took out a permanent marker she had in her pencil case and drew the shape in to the bottom of her bowl, very carefully, checking the board and her book more than once to make sure she got the shape correct. Looking towards the boy beside her, she held out the pen for him. "This might help you get the shapes right." She told Bennett with a smile, hoping that he wouldn't mind her input as she picked up her carving tool and set to work.

Victoria had always been dainty, and on top of that, she was very precise, so it took her a fair while to get the carving right, but when she finally finished some time later, she was smiling down at her work, excitement filling her as she looked to the professor for an inkling of what they would be doing next.

Naomi lowered her book slightly as Finley sat next to her, blushing when he mentioned how he almost didn't see her. When he told her the Headmaster wasn't scary, she just muttered, "That's what you think," quietly to him. She was sure the Headmaster was perfectly nice, but he was still the Headmaster, and that made her nervous.

Class began and another student answered the professor's questions. Bennett, apparently, from the Headmaster's address. Naomi watched the fire run appear on the board and caught her bowl as it was levitated to her.

Glancing around, Naomi saw other students sketching the symbol before etching it and decided that was a good idea. She dug one of her drawing pencils out of her bag and quickly drew the sign. It wasn't hard for her, as she was used to drawing far more complicated things. What was going to be hard was etching, which she had never done before. The tip of her tongue poked out as she concentrated and she ended up with a fairly done, but rather shaky line. It was a good approximation for her first try, she thought as she blew wood dust and chips away from her newly carved fire rune.

Finley had simply raised an eyebrow at Naomi's response. What did she think was scary about Professor Jameson, Finley wondered, before shaking away the thought. Whatever Naomi thought, they could discuss it another time because he didn't want to disrupt the lesson.

As soon as they were told to try and draw the rune in to the wood, or rather, carve, Finley frowned. Why couldn't they just draw them first so they perfected them? Wouldn't that be more useful? But, of course, Finley didn't speak out loud about this, instead picking up his carving tool and making a start.

By the time he got halfway through, Finley had a crude outline of the shape, and was working on digging out the centre. Wood chips were littering his desk. As he looked sideways to Naomi, he couldn't help but let out a small chuckle as she sat with her tongue stuck out. But he turned back to his a moment later, using his fingers to pull out a piece of wood.

Bad idea.

Splinter.

Letting out a small gasp of pain, Finley lifted his finger up, checking the damage. With somewhat careful hands, he reached up and pulled the splinter out, making sure nothing was left. Blood ran out a moment later, and Finley put his finger in his mouth, trying to get rid of the pain. It was a force of habit, and he knew it wouldn't help, but he didn't want to get blood everywhere.

Ellie had no fear when it came to being late. She'd given up mid-way through trying to be on time because her timetable was just all jacked up thanks to summer. She had spent the majority of her break in between classes begging a house elf for breakfast and ten ended up falling asleep. Now that was a stupid idea, and so was thinking that it would be alright in the first place. Gods she felt stupid. This wasn't a new feeling, she felt so awful that she had been late. Tomorrow she wouldn't take her time getting ready or getting to class. Tomorrow she'd wake up early, sit with Phil, loudly talk to Caelan just to make sure he knew he was loved and then head to classes equally as early. Tomorrow would be better. She was too young to be the disappointment of the family.

Still today was a screw up so she may as well roll with whatever came next. With her re-braided hair over her right shoulder she entered her Runes classroom with a sigh.

"Good day Professor Jameson, should I take my seat or just march to your -" she paused as she realized he was the Headmaster and her brows knitted together in confusion, "other office I guess, whatever, anyway what do you want me to do sir?" She asked as she gave a small yawn and shifted her weight between her feet.

Watching as the students got stuck in, Daniel noted the door open and another student slip in to the room. Since the beginning of term, Daniel hadn't seen the witch in question, but this time, it didn't feel like the room had gone icily cold. Still a little cold, but not anywhere near as bad as before.

Her question made Daniel remember he was Headmaster, and thus needed to make sure he set a good example to the rest of the students. But, he also didn't want to be a harsh man either. "This will be the only time I will let anyone get away with being late." Daniel told the witch, but his voice was addressing the whole class in that moment. "Whilst I understand you can't always help it, I don't like people who are late. Don't let it happen again. Take a seat."

Inside, his mind was shouting at him for being such a hypocrite on time keeping, but Daniel ignored it, because now was not the time.

Looking around the room, Daniel concluded that most people were ready to continue. So, he moved back to the front of the class and cleared his throat. "Okay, everyone who has managed to carve out their bowls, well done, to those of you who haven't, you can try to finish it in a moment. To move on, I want to show you how you can use runes in a fun manner."

Picking up the bowl on his desk that he'd carved out earlier, Daniel took out his wand. "You will all need to stand up to do this, otherwise you might end up burning yourself. But, if you trace the carving with your wand, and imagine a fire coming from the carved features..." He explained, doing what he was saying in the same moment. "You get a small level of flames rising from the carving." He explained, motioning to the bowl, the rest wouldn't catch fire, Daniel had already taken care of that.

"Once you have that bit, if you do the same wand movement higher up from the bowl..." He explained, again showing the class as he spoke, the flames growing higher and more hungry. "You will get a more interesting result.

Flicking his wand away from the bowl, the flames went out. "It should be relatively simple, there aren't any incantations for you to remember. Have a go, if you would like to."

Dan finished carving the rune just as the professor began explaining the next step. He looked up in time to see the fire in the professor's bowl. Oh no. No. Fire was not something Dan was fond of messing with. It was wildly unpredictable and far too dangerous for the young boy's liking. Couldn't they do something with water first? Or air? Why did they have to start with fire of all things?

Reluctantly, he pulled his wand from his bag and slowly traced the rune, retracting his hand as fast as he could once he was done. There was no way he was making it bigger. Not going to happen. Dan didn't care if he completely ruined his grade for the class, he wasn't turning an already dangerous element even more dangerous. For Merlin's sake, he didn't even like lit candles on his birthday cakes. So no thank you, the small flame in the bowl was all he was willing to do and the professor would just have to deal with it.
