Background

Muggleborn Kenneth Abrams was ecstatic to get his Hogwarts letter, because it meant he was unique out of all of his eight siblings. He was the 5th child; young enough that all the great accomplishments had already been achieved by his siblings, but old enough not to be coddled by his parents. He was just... there. He knew is parents loved him, of course, but he was still glad to find out he was so special.

When Ken got to Hogwarts, he was Sorted into Slytherin because of his ambition to outshine his brothers and sisters and his cunning. He had often gotten away with many of his misdeeds at home because of his way with words, which he carried with him to school. That did not, however, save him from Slytherin bullies who still held on to the old Pureblood ideals.

Ken and some other Muggleborn students were targeted by a group of older Slytherins led by a girl name Francine Rookwood. They focussed especially on the few Muggleborns Sorted into Slytherin, making their lives living hell. However, because of their parents and their rich connections, they often got away with a light slap on the wrist.

The victims banded together, and Ken became the leader using his charisma and inventive plotting to win over the bunch. They took an old symbol of fear for Muggleborns, the basilisk from the Chamber of Secrets story, and took it as their own, making it their symbol of hope. Ken used his intelligence to craft a plan designed not only to get revenge on their bullies, but to destroy them. During school, he began The Basilisks as a club to promote Muggleborn equality, but a few of the higher up club members knew the true purpose.

The Basilisks continued as a group after Hogwarts, with some of the members attacking Purebloods and even some half-bloods and others protesting less radically. Although the attackers often wear Basilisk colors and symbols and leave marks that indicate their affiliation with The Basilisks, Kenneth has claimed to the Ministry that it is, in fact, a rogue sector of The Basilisks that carry out these attacks. Though Ken does, in fact, give the orders, it is done untraceably and there is no proof that what he says is a lie. Therefore, The Basilisks must be allowed to continue to operate. The public face is one of peace and a respectful demand for the punishment of Muggleborn (and other) discrimination, leading many people to join the group without any idea of what the true Basilisks do in protest.

Family Background

Kenneth is the first and only wizard to be born into his family. The rest of his family tree is as Muggle as can be, but they're all very proud of Kenneth for his abilities. John and Mary were introduced by friends, dated for a few years, then got married and immediately had Colleen. They had a new baby (or two!) every few years, finally stopping when they had nine total children.

Both John and Mary worked full time to support their family, so Colleen, Keith, and Jacob were left in charge of their siblings more often than not. All of the siblings know how to fend for themselves, especially since they grew up in a rougher part of Liverpool. The older ones learned how to defend themselves and taught the younger ones, leading all of the children to become a bit rough around the edges. John and Mary were happy to get Kenneth out of that environment as soon as possible, but he still learned the same things as his siblings (some of whom resent Ken for being able to leave before them.)

Kenneth stood at the large window of his hotel room for the night, naked as the day he was born and surveying the city of Tokyo. His bedmate for the night, Akio, lay in bed behind him, asleep. Kenneth had made sure the man would stay asleep for the next few hours with a simple spell, as he wasn't in the mood for company.

Down below, revelers were preparing to celebrate the New Year in spectacular style. Thousands of lanterns illuminated the crowds as they surged through the streets. A parade wound its way through the buildings to Ken's left and a small street fair had sprung up on his right. Ken himself felt removed from the festivities; beautiful as they were, he was restless and they didn't satisfy him.

Deep in the night, a bell began tolling and the crowd went wild. The Buddhist temples had begun tolling the bells, 107 tolls on December 31st and one on January first. They represented the 108 sins of Buddhist belief and some people believed that the sound rid them of their sins from the previous year. Kenneth smirked. He doubted anything could remove his sins, but he felt that they were completely justified and he did not regret them.

On and on the bells tolled as the New Year approached. It was a time for new beginnings, Kenneth mused. With the money he had gained from cursebreaking all over the world, he was now prepared to return to England to carry out his mission. He had started The Basilisks back on their destined path from afar, but now he felt that it was high time he rejoined them. The Aurors were growing increasingly worried, trying to meet the renewed threat that The Basilisks posed, but a few whispers in the right ears had convinced the Ministry to keep the news from the public for a while longer at least. The longer they had to gain innocent followers who would back him no matter what, the better.

Fireworks exploded, drowning out the final toll of the bells and Kenneth turned away from the window, another year older. New beginnings indeed. He smirked. He thought it was about time he went home to begin his mission anew.

Ken sat at a table in the corner of the Three Broomsticks, one that still afforded a good view out of the frosted windows towards the school. He sipped a cup of coffee and stared at the towers of the castle, planning.

He had been going about it all wrong. The problem wasn't just the adult Pureblood scum; they just kept making more and more. It was the children he needed to go after. Eventually the adults would die out, but if there was no one to replace them, then finally the cycle would end. No one would be superior; all would finally be equal.

Even Kenneth's twisted conscience squirmed at the thought of killing children, but he pushed it aside. He might not even kill them, if it came down to that. Perhaps kidnapping? He could try for a systematic takeover and forbid Purebloods from marrying each other, but even with puppets in the government, that would take too long. No, he would have to do this the old fashioned way: bloody revolution. No matter how long it took for him to convince himself and others that this was the best way, he would do it.

In the meantime, there were plenty of adults to kill. Kenneth smirked and left his table, leaving the waitress a large tip. Walking out into the snow covered streets, he turned up the collar on his overcoat and headed into the slowly darkening streets.
