Care of Magical Creatures: Lesson Two - Salamanders (All Years)

With winter here, snow came across Scotland as usual, meaning Hogwarts was comfortably blanketed with a foot of snow. The picturesque scene had been lovely from the Ancient Runes classroom last year, and Daniel had just been given a stark reminder of what it was like to work outside.

Thankful for his planning that day, Daniel moved closer to the bonfire that he'd set up, watching out for any of the salamanders that might be trying to get lucky in getting away.

Hopefully his students would appreciate these creatures, and if not the creatures then the warmth of the bonfire should have been enough to stop the students from growing disgruntled from the weather. Checking his watch, Daniel noted it was nearly time for his students to arrive. As always, he felt a little nervous, especially with the new subject, but he knew his stuff, his degree had made sure of that much.

Care of Magical Creatures was what was to follow for the young Hufflepuff as she strolled out of her Common Room that day. She was dressed warmly in her Hogwarts uniform and her black and yellow scarf was tightly wrapped around her neck, keeping her warm from all the snow that was now covering all of Hogwarts.

Truth be told, she liked the weather. Too many people outside to play with the snow, though, and she despised that, but she always found a quiet place to sit alone and enjoy the calmness.
Though it didn't take long for that calmness to go away since a very specific little monster cat kept following her everywhere.

And soon after, his annoying Gryffindor owner came following which in overall destroyed all the peace she was having. But she had learned to put up with this, since it had happened way too many times.

Arriving to where the lesson usually took place, Elyah smiled warmly at the Professor. She was happy to be taking this lesson. It was interesting!
"How are you doing, Professor?"
Elyah's eyes then fell on the creatures nearby and her eyes widened in awe. Was she scared? Excited? Disgusted? She didn't know.
"Sir... what... what are these?!"

There was a bounce on her step as Gabrielle headed to the grounds, to the area where Professor Jameson usually held the Care of Magical Creatures classes. She didn't even mind the cold and the snow—if there was time, she would've run around with her arms outstretched and played in the snow, but Gabrielle wanted to get to class as quickly as she could. Hugging her robe tighter around her, she ran until she saw Professor Jameson. 'Good morning, Professor,' she said cheerfully. Professor Jameson was one of the professors she liked to greet.

A Hufflepuff girl, a First or Second Year judging by the way she looked, asked about the salamanders by the bonfire, and from the expression on her face, Gabrielle could tell that she was genuinely interested in the class. Well, at least, that was something. She was used to hearing people complain about Care of Magical Creatures. While it wasn't a favourite subject of hers, the fact that they had classes outdoors made it bearable (and maybe even special) for her.

Though their complaints had made her angry at first, she eventually learned to just ignore them and relish in the fact that she knew about creatures more than most of her classmates. She did her best to stop herself from smirking and turned to the girl with a bright smile. 'That's a salamander,' she said, 'except... Professor, these aren't just normal salamanders, are they?' Gabrielle doubted Professor Jameson would bring in a normal salamander for a lesson, and she was excited to see what it can do.

Evelyn was much too small to be comfortable in weather such as this. Her hatred of being outdoors made the cold even worse. The snow blanketed the ground creating a beautiful scene around her, the air chilly, the birds quiet. They likely hid in the warmth of the forbidden forest until spring would once again surface. Evelyn trudged through the snow, her feet creating two small trenches behind her as she wrapped her arms around herself, shivering. Her breath came out in puffs of white air and her face was now numb and likely a vivid red.

It was much too cold to be having a Care of Magical Creatures class outside, surely the professor knew that. She would likely be sick for the next week because of this. Evelyn headed towards the small group that was beginning to gather when her eyes spotted a fire. At least the professor care a little bit. She moved closer to the group and upon reaching them, closer to the fire. She could care less about the class or the creatures, all she wanted was to be near the fire.

Care of Magical Creature was once again the lesson for today, something that brought a big smile on the blonde witch's face. She love Care of Magical Creatures, because she loved all types of creatures. Even the ones she was scared of or disgusted. But it was also her favorite subject because she was given the chance to learn more about her wolf form, but also about TJ.

Things were going great with TJ, even the full moons, and even if it was kind of hard to deal with everything, they managed to get through this together. Amethyst was in love with the Ravenclaw boy, and she was not afraid to show it. Thing was, she was too scared to say it to him.
Sometimes she was really wondering whether he was playing stupid, or if he really hadn't understood anything. Which was weird because TJ understood everything. Everything that involved them, at least.

Sighing, she made her way out of her Common Room and towards the Grounds, already aware of the place the lesson was going to take place. It wasn't hard for her to find the class anymore. This was easy for her.

Walking outside, she made her way down the usual path, a small smile touching the corner of her lips as she spotted the small crowd. It didn't take long for her to arrive, and once she did, she gave her fellow classmates a warm smile before turning to the Professor. She was seemingly not bothered by the cold today.

"Good morning, Professor! Oh! Are these salamanders I see?"

Lux made her way to Care of Magical Creatures. She was dressed in nothing more than the usual uniform with not even an extra garment to keep warm. It wasn't like she needed to anyway. The cold never bothered her and she supposed the reason for that was because she had ice in her veins instead of blood. Well, it wasn't literally true but it might as well have been.

Making sure to mess up the snow as much as possible as she walked, Lux glanced around her as she approached the group. The first thing that caught her eye was the fire and she frowned. Was nobody able to enjoy to the bitter cold without babying up and making a fire? The only thing that could make the class tolerable now was if they learned about an animal other than a unicorn. How anyone could love that sickening animal was beyond her.

She positioned herself near the back of the group and crossed her arms, swallowing the heavy sigh that threatened to leave her lungs.

Phil ran a hand through his hair, lazily stretching as he glanced out the window. The world outside was slowly coming to wake and he felt his sleepiness flood out as he instead remembered what his first class of the day he had. He had Care of Magical Creatures first and he was absolutely excited to see what Professor Jameson had in store for them. Simply put it was mostly because as he thought about his future, the more he found his heart wanted to put his future in line with something that had to do with creatures. Even better, it might even more specifically have something to do with dragons. He liked thinking that one day he would be a Dragon Trainer. One day maybe he'd even get into the same college as his parents, the same college his parents met at too. It was a wistful, but beautiful idea.

"Good morning Professor Jameson, what do we have in store today?" He asked cheerily as he entered, totally on time and finally ready to learn.

It was snowing, so automatically, Kayleigh was in a good mood. Then again, she was in a good mood when it was shining and sunny, and when the leaves were falling around and everything was so colourful and pretty, and when the flowers were just starting to peek out and make everything new. But there was just something about fresh snow that she adored.

With a bound in her step, she made her way down the path, holding herself back from bending down to play with the snow. There would be time for that later. She did not want to be late for her first class ever.

The cold had never really bothered her, and although it was chilly and she had to wear two layers, Kayle was still beaming as she stepped into the clearing and saw the fire. Picking up her pace, she moved closer, and at once let out a gasp. She knew what those things in the fire were - of course she did! "Salamanders! Oh! That's so cool!" she breathed, wondering if she dared step closer.

But then she caught sight of who she figured was the Professor, and moved towards him. "Hello. Professor... Uhm.. James! No, wait. Jameson. Professor Jameson. I'm sorry," she greeted, trying to remember his name from the schedule she had. She took a breath and went on, forgetting to think first. "I'm Kayleigh. I'm new because I missed the start of term because I was sick and I wasn't allowed to come, but I'm better now and they said I could start school so here I am and I'm really excited to be here!" With a wide smile, she glanced at the fire and back at the man in front of her. "We're learning about Salamanders today? That's so cool."

Max had thoroughly enjoyed the first lesson of Car of Magical Creatures. Seeing unicorns so closely was amazing, and scary, but so so cool! Max had been excited for Care of Magical Creatures the night before and had been reading his book late in to the night trying to work out what they might be studying the next day.

But, even tired as he was from staying up late, Max was still full of beans as he hurried down to Care of Magical Creatures that morning after breakfast. A crowd had already grown and he arrived just in time to hear the new girl speak. She sounded as excited as Max felt and he couldn't help but grin.

"Hi!" He greeted her warmly. "I'm Max, I'm kinda new too, but I wasn't sick, you should come and meet Elyah, she's in Hufflepuff, but she's nice!" Max explained, giving the other Gryffindor a warm smile as he moved towards Elyah. "Hey!" He greeted his friend (Max believed she was that, anyway, even if she wasn't always overly nice, they were friends).

"How are you doing, Professor?"

"Hey Elyah, I'm well, you?" The Headmaster responded to the witch who was firm to arrive. The Hufflepuff seemed nice enough, though Daniel was still profiling many and more of his students. "And you'll see very soon as to what they are." Daniel responded to her question a moment later, not wanting to ruin the lesson too much for her.

The next witch to come answered the question though, and Daniel simply smiled at her question, responding with a soft 'hello' before turning his attention to the next person coming. He wasn't going to answer the questions before the lesson was ready to begin.

The group started to fill up, and until a small Gryffindor moved forwards, getting his name wrong and then explaining how she was new, Daniel hadn't done more than welcome those who came.

"It's okay, Kayleigh, you're most welcome now." Daniel responded to the witch, having only a moment before Max arrived and made himself a new acquaintance. The Gryffindors were, to be quite honest, quite something this year, and Daniel couldn't help but smile to himself at how excited all of the students were to learn.

"Okay everyone, listen up." Daniel called out, a small amount of steam leaving his mouth showing how cold it was outside. "Today, as many of you have already rightfully pointed out, we will be studying the Salamander. Can anyone here tell me anything about the Salamander? I am, of course, talking about the magical version of the species, and not the non-magical ones. For those who have not quite seen, they're in and amongst the flames, but please don't try to touch them, you will get burnt, as with any normal fire."
