Professor Balan scared Finley, so he had learnt to take his time in getting to Potions without being late. This way he couldn't be subjected to anything untoward - or, so the Ravenclaw hoped. Making his way down from the Ravenclaw common room, the prefect wondered what they would be studying that day. Hopefully something useful, so that he would have something for later in life.

Though, Professor Balan was unpredictable.

Slipping through the door to Potions, Finley looked at the board to find it blank of any subject matter. Frowning at this, Finley turned his attention to a seat, and upon finding Madison in the class, he moved to her side. "Sorry, I d-don't like being early." Finley explained, though Madison would know him well enough by now to know that he was talking only about Potions, and not classes in general.

Taking out his textbook, a notebook and a pen, Finley sat quietly, waiting for their professor to start the lesson.

Potions was by far Melody's best subject. Not many people realised just how interesting, how creative one could be when it came to potions. Of course in lessons, it was following the steps put forward by the teacher… But in knowing about the different ingredients, their properties and what happens when you mix it with other ingredients was both equally useful and fascinating. So she walked in happily, well within her comfort zone- the potions, ingredients, all so familiar. She took her rightful seat next to her sister and began taking out her equipment. One of the key differences between her and Madison was the degree of interest in potions. She knew that her sister found it dull, but was more than competent in the subject, whereas it was her favourite subject. Small differences like that made them mesh so well together, and helped with their plans.

She was eager to start class to see what they'd be learning.

Aaron was absolutely dreadful at Potions. He was sure that by now Professor Balan hated him more than he disliked anyone else. He paused right before the entrance to the classroom. He took one deep breath and walked in, taking a seat at the back. Hopefully the Professor wouldn't look his way too much. Pulling out his things, he looked around to make sure there was nobody too close to him so when he did fail miserably at making the potion he wouldn't hurt anyone else or get them in trouble. This was bound to be disastrous indeed.

Aaron was decent at reading and executing instructions. However when it came to potions, no matter what Aaron did or how well he tried to preform it he could never get the potion right. it always created a powerful stench, turned to sludge, or made some kind of small explosion in his cauldron. So he took a seat as he waited for Professor Balan to start the lesson.

Potions was one of Joshua's favourite classes. He was good at potions and he did not mind all of the waiting and reading involved with potions. It was just following directions. Potions was nto a passion, exactly. It was just the most tolerable of the classes Joshua attended. He also liked to instructor. Professor Balan was unlike any other professor he had had. He was unconventional and he did not care much about teaching a class the way most teachers thought they should. He interested Joshua.

When Joshua entered the classroom, he saw that the class had not yet begun. He also saw that Professor Balan had not written the lesson's topic on the board. He hoped that they would be able to decide whether or not they would work with partners. Joshua enjoyed doing potions alone. It was easier to control the preciseness of the outcome, but he was not against a partner.

Though Felipe enjoyed most of his class in Hogwarts, Potions was perhaps his favourite—it was the most similar to cooking, and there was nothing he enjoyed more than the process of making food. Of gauging if something was roasting well from the smell, of tasting the soup to check to whether it had had a right amount of saltiness.

Strolling into the classroom with his hands in his pocket, he greeted the professor and looked around the room for people he might know. There was Joshua Abbott, who he had met over the summer, but what caught his attention was the sight of a familiar Asian girl. Smiling to himself, he took the empty seat beside her.

'Mei Xin.' He didn't bother asking whether the seat was taken—if anyone had wanted that particular seat, they should've come earlier. He wasn't sure what potion they would be making, as Balan hadn't bothered to write it down on the board, but it was his chance to show Mei Xin what he was capable of. Glancing at her sideways with a smile, he asked, 'Ready for today's class? I'm excited. Potions did always remind me of cooking, sort of.'

Potions was one place he really shone in, but that was mostly because he was capable of following instructions. It was formatted, and didn't need any sort of guesswork or stupid application questions, which meant that he could do it with one eye shut should he choose to. It was his strength, and although not something he was particularly passionate about (there really wasn't anything that he truly found joy in) it was something he didn't mind.

Slipping into class, he was about to offer a smile at the Professor, but the look on the man's face stopped him short, and instead he rather awkwardly switched his attention to looking for someone to sit with. If there was one thing he couldn't stand, it was people who looked down on others. Mei Xin caught his eye once again, and though someone was with her, Chee Wye didn't mind and instead moved to join her on her other side.

"Zhou san," he greeted her. "Le ho mo?" For a moment, he switched back to his familiar Cantonese without realising; it just felt right when he was with her, and it gave him some sense of comfort to be talking in a language he was so familiar with, especially when he normally couldn't. "Eh, xin xang ho kook hey pau, hor? Cis, sombongnya!" he added, combining Malay where the Chinese failed. "Ho tai meh?"
[Translation: "Good morning. How're you? Hey, the teacher is so grumpy. Ew! So prideful. Does he think he's that great?"]

Slinking into class, she kept her head down and eyes on the floor. At the very least, this was one class she wasn't bad at, since it only required mindless following on instructions, something that anyone could do with ease, so long as they were able to be precise. And, with art as something that came naturally, she was very precise when she needed to be. This meant that Potions (with exception to theory parts) was something she managed to get at least Exceed Expectations in.

Finding an empty table, she didn't bother to look to see who else was around; there was no way she wanted to sit with anyone. She also didn't bother with a greeting towards the Professor; Merlin knew he was as cranky as a woman constantly on their period, and she didn't want to get in trouble with him. It was easier, this way, in any case - she didn't need to pretend to be happy and cheerful and fake politeness, and could simply stick to her own self and do the work before leaving.

There were no indication of what they were going to do in class, but Chrisy just could not get herself to be curious, no matter how hard she tried, instead picking at some fluff on her sleeves, wishing that it wasn't so hot but not daring to wear anything that covered less.

Mei Xin was flipping through her textbook, looking at the recipes for different potions and inwardly scoffing at the idea of ever using a recipe to cook. Potions was more like baking instead of cooking, precise amounts of ingredients for a perfect outcome. Even then, when she baked, she would change the recipe and trust her instincts, none of which she could do during potions.

Her attention was drawn away from her text book when someone took the empty seat beside her. Looking up, she saw it was the gwai low from her workplace. Felipe, if she remembered correctly. "Felipe, hi," she returned the greeting as a shy smile blossomed on her lips. "Okay only lah," she replied to his question. "Eh, where got? Potions very different from cooking lah. Cooking where got use recipe wan?"
[Where got: What are you talking about?/Where did you get that idea? Recipes are not needed for cooking.]

Before she could elaborate more on the art of cooking, she heard a familiar voice and her grin nearly split her face in half at the language. She turned to Chee Wye. "Eh! Chee Wye! Zhou san! Ngor ho," she replied then chuckled at his observation of the teacher. "Hai lor! Hui lau kai lah," she responded. "Ho chee sai low kor kum-yung. Mou pei hei chee tou ngor dei kong hei, ah!"[Good morning! I'm good. That's right. He's throwing a tantrum. Like a little kid. Better not let him know we're talking about him!][/color]

It was so very, very nice to hear Cantonese again, after weeks of English and having to be very careful about what he said lest people misunderstood him, and his smile grew even wider. "Good, good," he commented, slipping in English words as normal. "Hou chee ngor ge kui lut xin xang hai ngor tong yan shee koon," he joked. [Translation: "He's like my disciplinary teacher in my chinese school. ."]

"Hui muih ming pak lah! Ngor dei kong fook keen wah peen tou hui sek?" He flashed her a grin. Talking about teachers right in front of them was something he was used to doing, especially when it came to Malay teachers back in Malaysia. Those were rare, but when they did have substitutes for whatever reason, a bunch of his friends and him would start talking in either Hokkien or Cantonese, confusing the poor teacher in front. [Translation: "He won't understand us. We're talking Cantonese, how would he know?"]

One of the tricks, though, was not to look at the teacher or they would know for certain they were the subject of conversation, and instead Chee Wye shrugged lightly, the grin still there. He loved being multilingual. Almost as an after thought, he added, "Hui choong gu ngor dei kong kan Quidditch." Pausing, he shrugged. "Ho ho geng lor. Hokkien also can, Malay also can, Cantonese also can... Eh, Mei Mei, what else you know ar?" he commented, this time mixing English in. [Translation: "For all he knows we're talking about Quidditch! It's very very cool. We can speak in Hokkien, Malay, or Cantonese... Hey, Mei Mei, what other languages do you know?"]

As Isaline entered the potions classroom, she had very low expectations of what the class would be. Potions was one of her best classes and there was very little that could stump the girl in this subject. She walked with confidence, her feet tapping against the floor. She looked around the room to see who she was dealing with. To Isaline Charlot, classes were a test of two very important skills: the ability to exceed expectations and the ability to make important connections with those around you.

While she was unsure what potion the class would be told to complete, she was sure that these students were not worth her time. She saw nobody who seemed to be even remotely important enough to make her acquaintance. Oh how she hoped that partner work would not be forced upon her.

If she did have to work with a partner, she hoped that she would be paired with someone willing to sit down and shut up. The only way to achieve perfection was to do all of the work herself.
