| Things had progressed so quickly that, at times, it still felt like a dream. Six months -- or was it seven? Or eight? She'd lost count, somewhere along the lines, although she had it recorded down in her diary in her room so she'd never forget -- had come and gone in the blink of an eye, and it seemed both so long ago and only yesterday that she had been summoned to the Minister of Magic's office and asked a bunch of questions, none of which had seemed significant in that moment.
Then came the dinner at his house with his wife and their adopted daughter -- Lux, a Slytherin from school she had never really talked to before.
Then came the news she was no longer a slave to the department of mysteries, and they were being investigated for what they'd done.
Then came the announcement that she was free to do whatever she wanted.
Then came the question, posed almost shyly, of whether she'd like to come and live with Kamren and Clarinda and Lux.
Then came the adoption itself.
Then came the realisation, sudden and beautifully stunning, that she had a family, a proper home, and that she was cared for by two people other than Oliver.
Then came the day she called them 'mum and dad', a mere few weeks after the papers were signed, and it had felt more right than anything she'd done before.
Serenity shook her head as she stepped into the restaurant, bringing herself back to the present. Without looking up at the waiter, she softly gave the name of the reservation and followed him to the private room -- it had cost a little more, but she had money, now, and it was worth being able to eat at a restaurant without the fear of Seeing anything from the other customers.
Lux wasn't there yet, but Serenity hadn't expected the Slytherin -- her sister -- to be as early as her. After all, the Lux was in university now, and sometimes classes lasted longer or the Professor asked them to stay behind for whatever reasons.
It had been a bumpy start at first, but slowly they had come to what Serenity could only describe as an understanding. Whatever the case was, they were sisters, and that was all that mattered.
Taking her seat, she glanced down at the menu, eyes automatically going to the prices before she reminded herself that she was no longer living with Aunt Sally and needed to scrutinise the amount spent; no, she was the daughter of the Minister of Magic, and they could genuinely afford to eat out if they wanted to. While an idea she was still getting used to, she moved her gaze to the names of the dishes, trying to decide what to get while she waited for Lux to arrive. |

| Lux left class, bidding farewell to her friends as she made her way back to her dorm to dump her things before her scheduled meeting with Serenity. Lux snorted as the image of her sister's face came to mind. Serenity. As Lux set down her textbooks and picked up her fringe bag with all her essentials, she couldn't help but think of how much they'd progressed since Serenity came into the family.
When consulted about the possibility of adopting another girl, Lux had told her parents to do whatever they wanted. In truth, she'd always wanted a sibling to bully and annoy, something Lux took full advantage of when Serenity was adopted. With the age gap - and Lux staying at university and coming home only on the weekends - she didn't get much opportunity to give her sister the full force of her expertise. And she couldn't do much anyway, not with Kamren and Clarinda as parents. It was difficult to bully Serenity with them around but Lux managed to come up with some creative methods. It wasn't as evil as she wanted it to be, but it was better than nothing.
Then there was the whole deal about her being a Seer. Lux wasn't jealous. Instead, she was curious about how it worked but, never one to degrade herself by asking Serenity about it, Lux instead diverted her energy to asking about how the Ministry had treated her and bugging her about it. She revelled in all forms of mistreatment, be it physical, mental, or emotional.
Over the months, they'd establish a form of relationship. Lux would tolerate Serenity's many philosophical and deep discussions and questions, as well as take every opportunity to tease and annoy her senseless. If she couldn't bully her sister, she could at least tease her and make her feel bad. Siblings, after all, were constantly at each other's throats - or so she'd heard. There was a reason for the term 'sibling rivalry'. And although they weren't sister's by blood and were only related by adoption for a few months, it still counted.
Glancing at her watch, Lux saw that she was running late. Lux bit her lip, debating whether she should walk - which she dearly wanted to do - or apparate. In the end, her hunger won out and she took out her wand, apparating to the place she'd agreed to meet with Seren. It didn't take long for her to locate her sister and Lux made her way to the room, dismissing the offer the waiter had made to show her to the private room. She could find a bloody room by herself, thank you very much!
"There's the Seer," Lux said, entering the room and plopping down in a chair. "What's up, brat?" That last words hadn't been said in derision but it was one of the many not-so-nice nicknames Lux had given Serenity. Where people used terms like 'pumpkin', 'dear', 'honey', and the like to show their affection for someone, Lux had her own list of terms which she considered a lot less boring and a lot more interesting to use. |
