Treasure Hunt - Sophie Heart

You realise that you have been spending quite some time staring at the reflection of you. How much time has passed you are not sure, but you do know it has been a while, and you force yourself to turn away from the mirror and head over to the Quidditch Pitch.

It’s large, but as you glance around you realise that both the pitch and the stands are empty except for a broom and a chest in the middle of the pitch.

After noticing the empty stadium, you notice the sound of wings above you. Looking up, you notice that there are keys -- with wings -- flying around. You can’t really tell from where you are standing which key could possibly fit the lock, but you can see that there is a lock on the chest.

There are no instructions awaiting you on this task.

What do you do?

a) Get on the broom and try to catch one of the keys.
b) Go to the chest and try to open it.

(OOC#1: You can use a broom that is limited to how high it can fly if your character is not a good flier, but unless stated in your post, it would be assumed the broom has no limitations.)

(OOC#2: At the end of your post, please make your choice clear by writing it in another colour, or bolded.)

Sophie didn't know how much time she spent looking into the mirror, but she couldn't help it. She'd never seen anything like that before and it fascinated her. And that woman and man..who were they? She had not seen them before but the woman looked too much like her to ignore. Sophie wasn't stupid but Gramma and Grampa never talked about her mom or dad. Was that man and woman her parents? They had to be right? Shaking her head a little, she turned away from the mirror and continued down the path to the Quidditch Pitch.

She'd been here before when she was looking for a place to practice her trick riding. It was a large area and Sophie wasn't sure what she was supposed to be looking for. Once glance told her that the stands were empty, but as she walked, she noticed another chest in the middle of the pitch, this time with a broom by its side. Seeing that there was nothing else to do, she headed towards the objects.

As she neared, she heard the sound of flapping wings. She glanced up, squinting her eyes against the sunlight, and saw flying keys. Looking back at the chest, she saw that there was a lock on it, but from this distance, she didn't know which key fit the lock. Well, there was only one way to find out.

She was a natural flier, as at home on the broom as she was on the back of a horse and she wasn't afraid to go high and fast. There were still things she could learn, of course, but she was skilled for her age. Grabbing the broom, she mounted and took off.

Taking the route that includes the broom, you hurry to the broom. A moment is given to take in that it is a school broom that you will be using for this task, and then you kick off from the ground, up in to the air towards the keys above.

This sets off the keys into a frenzy of fast movements. You look around you, trying to locate a key that would look like it would fit the chest. All of the keys flying around you look very, very new. Your eyes keep scanning though, really trying to find the key that you need.

What do you do?

a) Fly after the keys, trying to locate the key you require.
b) Abort the idea of trying to find the key, and return to the ground.

(OOC#1: Please note that when the keys ‘speed up’ it will be to a speed that your character will find challenging, but not impossible.)

When Sophie came to Hogwarts and discovered the world of flying, she'd been thrilled. She already had years and years of practice riding horses that her body adapted well to the broom. Of course, the two things were quite different but her natural instincts kicked in and she grew to love the sport. The broom provided wasn't one that Sophie would've picked but it was the only one available so she had no other choice.

There was one problem. The moment she launched into the air, heading for the keys, they began moving faster, their speed almost as if they were high on drugs or something. Sophie paused for a moment, hovering still in the air as her gaze darted from one key to another, trying to figure out which would be the one to fit in the lock, but they were moving just too quickly for her to make them out.

It wouldn't be hard at all to just set sights on one key and chase it down. She knew she could fly fast and she wasn't afraid to do so. Mind made up, she fixed her eyes on one key and decided to catch it.

You decide on continuing on the broom and hurtle towards the keys in an effort to obtain the key you need. The keys fly around you, turning and twisting midair. Some fly into your path, making you swerve to avoid them. Others seem to taunt you, flying close to your face and then moving away. The more you search, though, the more you realise that all you can see are brand new keys, shining and glittering gold and silver. None of them appear to be old enough to fit into the chest on the ground. Perhaps this wasn’t the right path to have chosen?

You continue to chase the keys a little while longer, still searching for an older key that would fit the old chest, before deciding that you had chosen the wrong path -- there simply aren’t any keys up here that would fit it! There is only one option left

a) You return to the ground and head towards the chest to give it a closer inspection.

Sophie took a deep breath, dead set on catching one of the keys. She sped up, feeling the adrenaline rush through her veins as the world moved past her in a blur. But the keys did not move in a straight line. They twisted and turned, diving here and there, always just out of her reach. While Sophie was rather adept at flying and could do a few impressive maneuvers, there will still limitations to her flying. Then the keys began to change their movements, instead of avoiding her, they came straight at her, forcing her to turn tightly and lose sight of the key she wanted.

But not one to give up, Sophie kept at it determined that she was going to get one of those pesky keys. She didn't know how long she persevered but eventually, she felt the ache in her bones as tiredness began to creep in. Perhaps she should have just taken a closer look at the chest (maybe even try Alohomora?) instead of just assuming that one of the keys would open it.

Instead of continuing to chase after the keys, you decide to head back down to the pitch. You land your broom and get off before moving towards the chest. It is fairly old, but the lock on the front looks odd. Closer examination proves it to be a false lock, and as you go to touch it, it springs open before you! The chest is now open, and you move forward to get a look at what is inside. Inside is a rolled up scroll and a small velvet bag, drawstring pulled shut.

Picking up the scroll first, you unroll it and two small squares fall to the ground. You ignore them to read the message:

Congratulations! You have completed the treasure hunt. Enclosed are two vouchers, one for Honeydukes and the other for Flourish & Blotts. In the bag you will also find some treats as your prize.

You pick up the vouchers and the velvet bag and start back to the castle.

Her mind made up, Sophie headed towards the ground, gliding until she reached a stop before climbing off the broom. Putting it back where she found it, she made her way to the chest. Kneeling in front of it, she let her eyes rove over the box, noting that there was something unusual about the lock. Of course, it's a fake lock! she thought to herself, rolling her eyes and beating herself up mentally for not thinking of it earlier.

Just before she her fingers could grasp it, the lock sprang open, revealing the contents of the chest. It was a scroll, and a bag. Not very rewarding in Sophie's opinion, especially everything she'd gone through. Reaching for the scroll, she picked it up, catching the two things that fell out. She'd probably use the Honeydukes voucher but as she didn't write a lot and had all the necessary stationery and books, she had no use for the Florish & Blotts voucher. Very unrewarding indeed for all the work that she'd done.

But it was an adventure and she'd completed it and had fun. With a big grin on her face, Sophie picked up the items excited to tell Phoenix everything.
