"Life is Business", that is the Watson motto. The product of an arranged pureblood marriage based in business advancement, Ben was raised with this motto as a fact of life. His parents taught him at a young age that people were merely made up of their weaknesses and faults, and one need only know how to push the right buttons to move them any way they wanted.
Unfortunately for Mr. and Mrs. Watson, their son could care less about other people. As he entered Hogwarts, following in their footsteps into Slytherin, they had hoped that being around children of similar breeding would make him see the error of his antisocial tendencies. They were extremely wrong. In fact, seeing the stupidity surrounding him only instilled the idea that these people weren't worth his time. To Ben, it had nothing to do with blood or money, but power. And power was brought about by knowledge. What good was money if you didn't know how to use it?
He was not surprised to receive his acceptance to an unknown school on the day of graduation. His parents had never mentioned anything to him of their university years, which was just as big of an indicator to the school’s nature. Initially, his usually disappointed parents were thrilled he was following in their footsteps by studying Potions. That was until they realized he was focusing on the experimental side, instead of business. Ben didn’t mind either way.
The summer before his first year, his parents came to him with an ultimatum. Either find a suitable wife to grow the family name, or no longer be a part of this family. It was a simple decision for the young man, but one that surprised his parents. He had enough means of his own, through family savings and personal stock in the family company, that he was not left out in the cold.
Still, he took the presented opportunity to live smartly by sharing a flat with the other person his age he could stand. Mostly. This arrangement continued after their time at University, as Conner and he found a reasonably sized flat in Wizarding London. A nice older lady owned the building and let them rent the upper flat. While Ben knows he’s not the easiest of roommates, Conner still puts up with him. Mostly.
Mother: Laurel Watson (47 – Living – Pureblood – Co-owner of Aconite and Lethe)
Father: Jeremy Watson (52 – Living – Pureblood – Co-owner of Aconite and Lethe)
The Watson’s have always been careful to live on the outskirts of the political fray. While they hold true with pureblood values, they were more concerned with the Watson family business, in the many forms it took, and how they could further their own gains. Benjamin’s parents took the Potions route, creating a manufacturing company called Aconite and Lethe, which they’ve grown to quite a substantial name. They hoped he would follow in their footsteps, but like in all things through Ben’s life, he’s turned out to be a disappointment to them. Since leaving Hogwarts, and refusing to fulfill his duties as the sole heir, Ben has been cut off from the family in as many ways as possible. He much prefers this.
