Background
Hamish was born to Lyla Summers and James Greer one bleak, summer day in the Scottish highlands. When he was barely a month old, his mother ran away with him to live with her parents. His father followed, of course, and beat his mother until she fell down a flight of stairs and died. Terrified, his grandparents persuaded to leave Hamish alone as long as they didn't press charges against him for their daughter's death. James left with a smug smile on his face
It wasn't until Hamish was 6 and a half years old that they discovered why James had been so smug. Hamish was a wizard. Being muggles themselves, they were at a loss for what to do or how to raise an emotional child with magic. Still, they refused to contact his father and made do. When he received his Hogwarts letter, he was ecstatic to go to a school with others like him. Thankfully, he'd remained mostly oblivious to the happenings of the first war, and began school completely unaware of the turmoil that had just happened. However, when the second war broke out, Hamish fled for the muggles. He began medical school and graduated with top marks. Unfortunately, med school was expensive and he enlisted to pay off his debts. While in med school, he met Moira. The pair dated for about a year before Hamish proposed. A few months after one of his yearly visits home, Moira sent a letter telling him she was pregnant with a little girl whom they named Lyla Jane for both Hamish's mother and grandmother. He spent nearly fifteen years--with occasional visits once a year--overseas fighting the war on terrorism, but had to return home or good when his wife died.
Now that he's back, he's trying to adjust back into a civilian wizard's life and take care of his daughter.

Family Background
Lyla was a young thing when she met James, barely 20 years old herself, she was charmed by the older man. The first few months of their relationship were happy, but James slowly turned to drink and began beating Lyla. Terrified of what he'd do if she left, she stayed and endured. That is, until she found out that she was pregnant. Barely a month along, she packed what she could and left in the middle of the night, fleeing to her parents.
She managed to remain there for several months, but when she was nearly eight months along, James appeared on the doorstep and dragged her back. Heavily pregnant as she was, she couldn't fight him properly and was forced to go along. Through the remaining weeks of her pregnancy and a month after, she did her best to persuade James into a false sense of security. Enough that she was able to sneak out once more in the dead of night.
James followed and beat her when he found her. Killing her. Her parents agreed to let him go if he never attempted to contact his son. So far, he has held up his end of the bargain.
