| It had been a month since Naomi and Theo had moved in, which meant everything had settled nicely in to place. Theo was still exploring the house and the many different things it had in it, and Naomi seemed to be growing less stressed without the worry of making ends meet with her money. Daniel also felt much better in himself, he had something to look forward to in the evenings when Naomi got home from work, and he had Theo around which meant he never grew bored.
Seeing as it was the summer, Daniel had taken away the need for childcare for Theo, leaving Naomi to go to work whilst he entertained his nephew. Which wasn't too difficult, anything Theo wanted to do, Daniel could usually muster up. They explored, for the most part, finding Theo places to play, showing him the gardens. Anything really.
And today was no different. Daniel had helped Theo get ready for the day, and then they'd enjoyed a breakfast made by the house elves. Theo had then wanted to talk to the house elves for a while to get to understand them more, and Daniel had been content.
From there, Daniel had taken Theo to the library and shown him the books on creatures that could be found in the United Kingdom, watching Theo look through the pictures with wonder in his eyes.
Theo had gone for a mid morning nap shortly after, leaving Daniel to get some work done for an hour or so, and then they'd had some sandwiches out on the patio. Theo talking excitedly about the creatures he'd discovered throughout and Daniel adding knowledge where he could. The rest of the afternoon they'd spent outside, first finding a tree that Theo could have a treehouse in if Naomi agreed, and then playing football on the lawn.
It was a good afternoon, warm, but not blistering heat.
By the time five o'clock had come around both of them were exhausted, heading back inside to the lounge where Daniel had put a television for Theo to watch whatever kids watched. Daniel had been sat watching, feet up on the sofa because it was comfortable and Theo sat in his lap. Both of them were glued to the television, and there was simply no way of knowing which one of them had fallen asleep first.
Daniel holding Theo close to him, and Theo curled in to Daniel. Both of them with their mouths slightly open, and both in a very deep sleep... |

| Things felt right in the world.
No, things were right in the world.
No longer did Naomi feel as if she was being suffocated beyond compare. No longer did she feel like she was drowning or being irrational in who she was. No longer did she feel alone. However, it never really felt like being totally alone because she had Theo, her lovely, terrific son that she could never begrudge despite the angst her ex-husband had given her after his birth. Being a single parent was strenuous and most days before switching living spaces she wanted to bury her face in her hands and cry, but couldn't because of the close proximity that Theo had to her. She never wanted her baby boy to know his momma wasn't as strong as he thought she was, unfortunately he did but he was smart. Theo wasn't selfish or greedy and he tried his hardest to be self-sufficient.
That was what she loved about her son.
Now he was even more self-sufficient, more independent and although it pained her, at the end of the days of the summer once she apparated home and he caught a whiff of his momma he throttled her to the ground. Then after changing into more relaxing clothes, he'd grasp at her hand, grasp at Daniel's hand and start pulling them around the house going off on long spiels about what he found and what the elves told him.
Daniel.
That was another story all on it's own. This man was her salvation, an angel, a diamond amongst coal; light in dark. She could wax whatever poetry about him but in total, he was an anchor. He kept her down on the ground when she wanted to cease to exist, and he was being the perfect male figure for Theo. There was no real way to properly thank him, there was nothing she could do, and for that she felt guilty. Except she would never vocally say that since he was such a great help she felt already too much of a hinderance.
Today was a terrific day, she thought excitedly biting her lower lip. She'd been leaving Theo alone with Daniel for quite some time now, but long since she had trusted her best friend with her little dove's life. She had some rather thrilling news to report to her little family. The Head Goblin at Grignotts had told her that she was being considered, and would most likely be chosen by the British Ministry to work as the Cursebreaker for the Hall of Prophecy in the Ministry. They were transferring her to work in that branch permanently, but she'd been doing work for the Ministry for quite some time.
However, now she'd be handling more cases of more archaic runes and more archaic incantations that had to do with Prophecies. The Head Goblin told her that her ability to de-layer and destabilize curses and jinxes surpassed that of the Hall of Prophecy ones and that the Ministry wanted her working on the cases now. She pulled her hair out of her face as she came home that night. After the resounding pop she waited for several moments, preparing herself for her baby boy to launch himself at her. When nothing happened she raised an eyebrow before following the noise of the TV to the lounge.
What she saw was something beautiful and heartworming. It was something sweet and something terrific and something just utterly spectacular in her sight. There on the couch asleep with the soft sound of some inane cartoon Theo loved droning on in the background was Daniel and Theo. In the back of her mind, there was gentle voice that told her that they made the picture perfect image of father and son. Her heart skipped a beat at the idea, but she ignored it in favor of pulling her son off of her best friend, gently, tenderly. He squirmed a bit, fingers tightening around Daniel's shirt but she merely unlatched him, glancing at Daniel every so often to make sure he wasn't waking up. Once Daniel's shirt was free of Theo's little chubby fingers, she balanced Theo on her hip and started to try and walk away with him when she heard a soft mumble from her son.
"Bring daddy back please, Theo wants daddy."
She could never deny her baby boy anything, so rather than pull him away as usually planned she gently laid him back out to sprawl over Daniel, her heart racing in her chest as she thought of the reprecussions of Theo's train of thought. In all honesty, there were worse men that Theo could pick as a father figure but there was none better. Daniel was the perfect man for Theo to look up to, and with that thought she sluggishly moved back to her room, switching the telly off and turning the lights in the lounge off.
That night her dreams were of sunsets and Daniel and Theo laughing, the sun in her dreams highlighting a little glint of a dot on her hand one she had once worn; the glint of a wedding ring. |
