| The partnership with Mimosa wasn't one that Nikolai was overly happy with. He would much preferred to have been paired up with one of the guys in the classroom, but, of course, he had no such luck. At least this wasn't a physical fight, though, so he couldn't be caught in a flurry of name calling around 'hitting' a girl.
Following Mimosa off to the side of the room, Nikolai drew his wand from his pocket as he took his position opposite the younger witch. With a stiff bow -- Nikolai didn't trust Mimosa not to play to her own rules, and thus didn't take his eyes off the witch as he did so -- Nikolai was ready to cast his first spell when Mimosa denoted that he could go first. Frowning at that -- it wasn't like you took this in turns, it was a fight! -- Nikolai shook his head with mild amusement before readying himself.
"Avis!" The boy spoke clearly, birds forming from the end of his wand as he spoke. With the guidance of his wand, they headed straight for Mimosa, swooping for her head as they flew, ready to attack the younger Slytherin as Nikolai wanted them to. ________________________________________________ProfileThanks to Kitty for the signature! <3

| His first spell proved he was silly, as Mimosa already knew he was. But still she couldn't give up on him, specially as he was making some improvement. The pretty birds that shot forth from his wand would not help in a duel, but instead of saying it out loud, Mimosa decided to make her point with a spell.
"Wingardium Leviosa!" the which sang and almost immediately, a few bonks flew to her defense, the thick tomes forming a shield of sorts in front of her. which the birds flew into headfirst because they were silly birds. The little witch giggled, watching their sharp beaks get stuck in the paper as the rest of their tiny furry bodies wiggled to get free.
"Duro!' she trilled once the birds and books were cast aside, her wand pointed straight at Squid Boy's. Hopefully by making his wand heavy or damaging it enough, he would be rendered unable to battle. ________________________________________________

| Mimosa's wandwork was quick, something Nikolai hadn't really anticipated as she brought up a stack of books to defend herself against his birds that were coming in for the attack. There wasn't time to really get caught up on that, though.
Mimosa's next move was to send another spell straight back. One they had only just learned in one of the recent classes with Professor Hughes. Nikolai's own amazement that Mimosa had managed to defend herself capably had left himself at a little bit of a disadvantage as he stood almost dumbfounded in that moment. His own wand did not move to block Mimosa's attack, instead the Slytherin moved out of the way almost too late, and the spell meant for him hit the pair working just behind him, sending the carefully balanced table that was being floated back down to the ground with a loud thud.
"Spongify!" Nikolai retaliated, his wand pointing at Mimosa's feet. The ground would hopefully soften beneath the witch's feet, and catch her off balance, which meant Nikolai could send another spell her way.
But...
Using only Transfiguration spells was difficult, and the boy's mind couldn't conjure up another spell. So, reverting back to his original plan, Nikolai quickly cast Avis for a second time, sending the birds at Mimosa for a second -- and hopefully much more successful -- attempt. ________________________________________________ProfileThanks to Kitty for the signature! <3

| Squid Boy's reaction to her spell was moving out of the way, a good defense but Mimosa would have deducted points for lack of grace. Instead her Duro hit Ji Hyun's table, sending it crashing down and allowing Constance spell to hit him square in the jaw. But Mimosa didn't have time to spare for the other fighting team. Squid Boy was already pointing at her and though she wasn't sure what spell he used, the girl could surmise it wouldn't be anything good.
Employing a move practiced and perfected through her dance training, the little Slytherin spun on her feet, pirouetting about five feet across to where she originally stood only for the ground to go soft underneath her original standing position. However the move left no time to cast another spell and this time, as the birds headed her way, Mimosa was almost sure they would meet their mark.
They wouldn't hurt, birds don't hurt. But it was annoying anyway. The child watched the tiny sharp beaked creatures approach, only to stop once they were close enough. Tiny painful squaking noises emanated from the birds before they all fell, one by one, their feathers singed lightly as if they had been over an open fire.
No time to contemplate how this could have happens - Squid Boy probably hadn't done the spell right - the witch pointed her own wand at the boy. "Transmogrify!" she chanted and a jet of light flew from her wand, missing Squid Boy but finding its mark - the heavy table she had crashed earlier.
Within seconds, the table had sprouted two long, spindly arms, reaching out to restrain Squid Boy from behind. Should the boy turn to deal with the table, she would send a second spell at his back. Using the same bird spell to release tiny airborne creatures to attack the back of his head.
After all, she had to show him how the bird charm was done properly! ________________________________________________

| Nikolai had been sure the double barrage of spells would have been enough to allow him to get something over Mimosa, the softness of the floor meaning that the witch wouldn't be able to keep her balance, distract her as the birds flocked in. And, perhaps another time, this would have been the case, but as the birds swooped in to Mimosa to work the magic he intended, they were scorched from beak to tail without Mimosa moving her wand to do so.
They were being burned as they tried to touch her.
But Mimosa hadn't spoken.
The boy stood dumbfounded in that moment, trying to understand what had happened to his flock of birds that meant Mimosa hadn't been affected. She hadn't cast a spell, so perhaps he'd done something wrong? But... what? It didn't make any sense to the boy, that much was for sure, which was why he did not attempt to block Mimosa's next move, still trying to work out what had happened.
That was the only reason Mimosa's next move bested the boy as something from behind him took advantage of his still state to embrace him in something akin to a bear hug. Almost crushing his ribs in the process as Nikolai tried to unwedge himself from whatever it was holding him, the flock of birds from Mimosa's wand were fluttering his way in the next second. Struggling harder -- and only being detained with more force -- the boy was left to concede the fight as the birds started to peck at his head.
"Mimosa!" Nikolai whined in between 'ow's and 'ouch's that came from his lips as he was pecked incessantly. "Stop it!" He insisted, trying to wiggle free still, but not getting anywhere. After a few more moments of wiggling to no success, the Slytherin slouched in the embrace of an inanimate object, resigned to the fact he'd just lost a duel against Mimosa Harrington-Clement, and undoubtedly the teasing that would be coming his way from his dorm mates later that evening. ________________________________________________ProfileThanks to Kitty for the signature! <3

| Grayson knew this was going to be chaotic. It was hard to keep track of everything going on at once, but from his vantage point, he could observe each pair at a glance to make sure nobody was breaking the rules, at least. He sidestepped as someone summoned a chair from the side of the room. There was some overlap between charms and transfiguration, so he wasn't too bothered about semantics so long as nobody resorted to hexes and jinxes. Almost everybody was following the assignment for the most part, except... "Charles! You cannot stun your opponent. One point from Slytherin, and Catherine wins this round." It seemed a couple people thought he wasn't looking. As the class continued, some clear victors emerged. Constance managed to make Ji Hyun drop his wand. Charles challenged Catherine to a rematch and was able to pin her the second time around without cheating. And, as his eyes drifted over to Mimosa and Nikolai, it seemed the young boy had been captured by a table while Mimosa's conjured birds nipped at his head. "You can call off the attack, Mimosa, I think you've won," Grayson remarked, feeling a bit sorry for the boy. When the bell rang to signal the end of class, a few pairs were still dueling, and Grayson called those matches a draw and sent them on their way. All in all, he was impressed by some of the creativity his students had displayed. Many of them had been quite resourceful when it came to utilizing their surroundings, not to mention the technical skill required to pull of some of those spells. He was proud of all of them. They'd do just fine on their exams. Class is now closed.
