- Ancient Runes -- though not his father teaching him! Which is somewhat problematic when the man is the professor of the topic at Hogwarts.
- Care of Magical Creatures -- there is the potential they might be going in to the Lake at some point. Which is exciting! If it will ever happen!
- Researching topics not always covered in the school curriculum -- why should you be limited to the subjects offered.

Dislikes:
- Being compared to his father
- Needless chatter/small talk
- Academia as a whole
- Crowded spaces -- these are difficult to avoid when you're pounced upon by the Clement Ward, though.
- Quidditch. It used to be quite cool. Now, though, it seems too full of mishaps in the Slytherin team, and the reason for it is very clear. But no one wants to fix it!
- Transfiguration. It's boring.
- Gryffindors. They're too... much.

Strengths:
- Navigating chaotic situations, from riddles, to social conversations
- Trading and getting the better deal
- An aptitude for magical creature handling

Weaknesses:
- Cocky sometimes to a fault, difficult in ever seeing himself fail/loose making the fall much harder
- Difficulty in letting go when that would be the better option
- Even though he enjoys plotting and attempting to further his own goals, his naivety and youth lead him to not always knows what these goals are. Which can lead to unnecessary deception/lies, or doing activities that don’t accomplish anything other than being deceitful.
- Time management. Nikolai is not very good at remembering to stick to what normal people would call a routine. This has led to him falling asleep in a few classes, by accident, which is never a good thing for a boy who likes more information where available.

Positive traits:
- Tenacious

Negative traits:
- arrogant - Talented in the games of strategy and excite have led him to be slightly arrogant in what he is able to do. This mostly revolves around him thinking he has the best plans, and he is the only one that could possibly see the right solution.
- short sighted - A failing of many youths, Nikolai has a tendency to not see the whole picture. Only concerned and wrapped into the moment. Winning battles, but possibly loosing wars, even including his own disinterest with school and what it will one day mean. Only time will tell if he is able to outgrow this.
- holds a grudge - Perhaps built upon his arrogance and need to one up others, Nikolai has a hard time letting go when someone either does him wrong or Wins. This causes him to remember these instances and can sometimes result in closing doors that could have remained open. Perhaps it’s just being a kid, but don’t tell him that.

Nikolai was born in Hong Kong to a family that had almost blended in seamlessly to the culture. For the first few years of his life, he lived the typical existence of a kid growing up in a family of migrants. He learned Mandarin alongside English and the dialects of Slavic his mother could teach him, he went to school, he had friends, his sister Helen was a pain.

All that changed when he showed his first sign of magic, A spider the size of his father's shoe had somehow ended up in their small apartment and Marie, thinking of protecting her son, had snatched him from the floor where he lay sketching. Marie Kessler had then withdrawn her wand to dispatch of the creature but it hadn't worked. The spider kept performing feats of dexterity well beyond its means and escaped every spell Nikolai's mother tossed at him. When she finally figured out the spider was being controlled by her son, her fear was mixed with pride too.

And then they had to move. Grandparents Nikolai had never heard of were dead or something and now they were in dreary old London where a boy of five had to start all over again. The realest tragedy one could have at any age. Nikolai became more reserved with the move, unconsciously blaming first his father for having parents who had so inconsiderately perished and then going on to blame the academic institutions that kept his father employed and therefore rooted in the United Kingdom.

Nikolai had no particular hopes for starting Hogwarts other than tracking down the Giant Squid that was rumored to live in the school's lake, he certainly hand't expected to be sorted in Slytherin or run into (several times) the annoying pest of a girl everyone seemed to fondly refer to as "Mimosa". Nikolai had never really set out to make friends, too bad the girl hadn't gotten the message and now he is periodically involved in her social activities by proxy. Its annoying but sometimes has its merits.

Andrei and Marie Kessler met in Egypt and married almost a year later because they were both nerds, or so Helen tells the story. They had her first so she has rights to all retellings and Nikolai doesn't really care.

His parents are just like all other parents, sometimes annoying other times okay. His mum is cooler though, while his dad is... sick a lot. Nikolai hasn't really started worrying about it yet seeing as everyone assures him this has always been the case with Andrei. And with Helen graduating soon, the young boy is simply looking forwards to getting the house to himself.
