Anatomy of a Potion (All Years) Empty
PostSubject: Anatomy of a Potion (All Years)   Anatomy of a Potion (All Years) EmptyMon Feb 18, 2019 6:42 pm

The New Year break had been a welcome relief to the staff and students of Hogwarts, but it was now over and everyone was back to what looked to be the beginning of real winter. Azalea had returned that week to find the castle coated in cold, fluffy snow and had joined her Slytherin students in a rousing game of snowball fight forthwith, stopping only when she'd seen Professor Kessler approach. The witch had only been embarrassed for a little while until the older gentleman had given her a smile and told her to aim better.

Having spent most of December in relative peace, Azalea had some time to focus on her research. Annika's teaching relied heavily on the younger witch's mood, Azalea had learned. And Professor Blackwood had been in a teaching mood all through December. As a result, many a class had been given unexpected pop quizzes and challenged in new ways. Ways that led them to write interesting answers on their tests when Azalea had sat down to mark them.

The brunette should have known it was too good to last. When Annika hadn't returned the week after the break, her assistant had merely assumed the witch was taking a few extra days off, leading the first class of the term to be postponed to another date. But when a word with HR revealed that Annika was simply MIA without word, Azalea was forced to admit she was now taking over until further notice.

So in an effort to catch everyone up, she had organised yet another lecture featuring students from all years. Hopefully everyone would benefit from a brief revision of what exactly made up potions and what went into brewing them. Having sent out the new class dates to everyone, Azalea had managed to make it to the potion labs half an hour early to set up everything before any of her students arrived.

No standard tables and chairs made an appearance in today's class. Instead workstations domination the area, complete with cauldrons and ladles ready on a pile of superficial wood, ready to start simmering. Each workstation was meant for two students

The witch herself stood at a similar workstation in front of the class, dressed in her now usual style of neutral tones to avoid favoritism so early in the term.

Potions had come around again in the New Year with the reintroduction of Professor Harrington, or so it appeared as they entered class that morning. Mimosa et. al had entered the rooom with their usual flurry, but Nikolai's attention had moved to see whom would be teaching them that day, and without thinking on the action in the slightest, Nikolai's features had lit up upon meeting the gaze of the teaching assistant at the front of the room instead of Professor Blackwood.

"Morning," Nikolai acknowledged the witch, before hurrying after Mimosa and taking the seat next to her before Ji Hyun could capitalise on his momentary distraction. The other male shoved Nikolai with a face like thunder as he moved to sit next to Bushrah once more, but Nikolai paid him no mind.

His attention was firmly on the professor, and nothing else in the room mattered in that moment.

Perhaps... and very rarely, Nikolai corrected almost immediately in his head, his dad did manage to make some good decisions about the school. But they were very few and far between, the boy decided as he rested his chin on one hand, not in the slightest bit being subtle as his eyes remained upon the professor.

Mimosa sat talking beside him, but as always, Nikolai could not tell you what the witch was spouting on about. Probably something to do with Christmas at the Palace, again.

Anatomy of a Potion (All Years) Empty

Mariah had returned from winter break refreshed and ready for the new year. She was grateful for the time she'd gotten to spend with her mothers, and her first Christmas in Europe had been exciting - they'd even spent a few days in France to do some sightseeing.

Mariah had always loved the holiday season. She put a lot of thought into the presents she got for people, and she loved watching their faces light up in response. She was disappointed not to be able to see Mr. Weber in person, but they had at least been able to exchange gifts through the mail. He was difficult to shop for. He never seemed to want anything that was good for him. She settled on a box full of famous treats from Hogsmeade, hoping they might bring back good memories of his own time at Hogwarts. He rarely ever talked about his past, but she figured it would be hard to go wrong with Honeydukes chocolate.

In return, she had a received a small, leatherbound journal that only opened at her touch. She now carried it everywhere, grateful that she would no longer have to worry about her privacy when she wrote.

Mariah slipped into the potions classroom and chose a workstation near the back like she normally did, her heart sinking as she saw the cauldrons and knew this would be a practical lesson. She had always struggled with making potions - so far, the only thing keeping her grade up in the class was the theoretical portion where she could simply spit out information and gain points. She sighed, resigning herself to her fate and resolving to pay close attention this time, though she knew it was a hopeless cause.

Potions was one of Lyra's worst subjects at the moment. Not in terms of grades of course, no Lyra's grades were all amazing, but that was more because she'd been working her ass off than than anything else. And because they hadn't as of late been doing actual potions. Her struggles were truly caused by no fault of her own, Ilvermorny had just been behind in a couple subjects, and it just so happened that Potions was one of them. In truth, Lyra enjoyed Potions. But as of late she had been liking them less and less as she attempted to catch up and worked on potions in her spare time that she couldn't quite figure out or understand.

The first thing she did was went straight to the front of the room where a new woman stood. She offered the woman a hand and a bright smile. "Good morning, my name is Lyra Fletcher. I heard we had a teaching assistant but I don't believe we've met yet? Are you teaching class today? I'm sure you'll do amazing." She spoke with the woman for a moment before going to find a seat.

The sight of the cauldrons brought a sigh from the girl, but she moved to take her seat regardless. She chose to sit next to a girl from her dorm that she had recently befriended just before the break, Mariah and gave her a friendly smile. "I hope we'll be practicing simple potions today. I'm not sure I'm caught up on all the fourth year ones just yet."

Dia slipped into potions. As she knew that she might be a late. And she wasn’t sure if Mercy or Mimosa was there. But she was glad to be focusing on something. As she knew that it would be break soon. Now she would have to worry about potions. As she knew that it was important to keep her marks high. And she knew that she would have to tell her uncle Jackson and Victoria about them. But for now she was just going to worry about potions. Afterwards she can worry about everything else later. Dominique then found her seat and seen that Mimosa was there. And then she noticed that she was sitting with squid boy.

Now she was ready for the class to began. She knew today that she would have to be paying attention in class. Dominique smiled as she saw Professor Harrington. As they both had a love for herbology. Now it was time for her to pay attention and get ready to learn.

Anatomy of a Potion (All Years) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Anatomy of a Potion (All Years)   Anatomy of a Potion (All Years) EmptyWed Feb 27, 2019 5:53 pm

Potions while not her greatest subject or her favourite for that matter, that spot was taken by DADA, it was a very close second and after the last time when she showed up slightly late to the lesson -and considering the fact that Professor Harrington had also been late hadn't made things better for the half-Greek witch- she had woken up early enough that day that she had time to spare to head to the Potions Classroom after her breakfast.

As usual, Apollonia followed her fellow Slytherins to the Potions classroom, only keeping one ear on the chatter coming from the younger Slytherins that Apollonia was somewhat friendly with. She didn't even need to look to figure out who was talking -the tone of voice had been enough of an indication that the head of the group was little Mimosa Harrington and following her was her little entourage of Nikolai Kessler -the only person she personally knew from the group- and the rest of the girl's fanclub. She had no doubt that they were Mimosa's friends but sometimes they just acted like a fanclub of Mimosa Harrington.

Slipping into the classroom, the girl paused in the doorway for barely a second before she was making her way across the room and towards one of the many workstations that stood in the classroom.

"Morning Miss Harrington." Apollonia beamed at the Assistant Professor. "I hope your holidays had been wonderful." Apollonia, personally, had spent her Christmas Holiday at home with her siblings -her parents, once again, at work with no care for their children.

Anatomy of a Potion (All Years) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Anatomy of a Potion (All Years)   Anatomy of a Potion (All Years) EmptySun Mar 03, 2019 7:27 pm

Over her the last term, Azalea had taken care to learn all her students names. Adman ant to not be caught off guard and referring to the attendance list like she had had to resort to in her first impromptu class, the witch now knew all her kids names by heart. From the hesitant first years to the ones who were currently tearing their hair out in preparation for their NEWTs, the brunette greeted them all by name.

"Morning Nikolai, hello Mimosa, Catherine, Ji Hyun, good break you guys?" she managed before addressing the Hufflepuff who walked in next. "Hey Mariah, did you have fun with your moms over the holidays?"

As each student passed by, Azalea greeted them in turn before encouraging them to find their seat. "Hi Lilac, why don't you join Dia? And hi Lyra, I already know you." The new student who had only joined them a month ago was already making waves. Before Lyra Fletcher's arrival, Headmaster Kessler had sent out notes to all the teachers encouraging them to help the young Hufflepuff catch up with her schoolwork.

"Good morning Apollonia, there's my star brewer!" Why don't you join Sterling and lets see if your combination is as inspiring as I suspect?"

Once everyone was settled, the witch cleared her throat slightly, signalling for the light chatter to die down so they could begin. "Now, before we start, some of you may have noticed... I am not Professor Blackwood,' the girl let out a small laugh. "However I will do my best to maintain her standards in this class. Though unfortunately, this means no pop quiz today." A small cheer went up at the back of the lab before the students fell silent once more.

"No, today we're gong to discuss the elements that make up a potion. For whether you're in your first year and just figuring out the right way to light a cauldron, or in your seventh year and trying to distill fresh snow water for Veritesrum, you will all benefit from learning what makes a potion. " the witch paused, making sure she had everyone's attention.

"So without further ado, why don't you all enlighten me as to what we need when brewing a potion. Keep in mind there are no wrong answers. Just think it over, what are some of the things you absolute need to achieve an effective potion."

As she spoke the words, the chalk rose to the blackboard behind her, waiting to jot down the answers submitted by her students.

Anatomy of a Potion (All Years) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Anatomy of a Potion (All Years)   Anatomy of a Potion (All Years) EmptySun Mar 03, 2019 7:35 pm

Nikolai had been quite attentive to the way Professor Harrington greeted each of the students, barely hiding the grin that touched his features at the sound of his name coming from her lips. He couldn't help it now, could he? Professor Harrington was beautiful, and she knew his name! That was enough to brighten any boy's day, especially when it was early in the new term and you were trying to get back on track with your routine.

It didn't take long for the class to kick in, either, and as Professor Harrington insisted there wouldn't be a pop quiz, Nikolai couldn't help but feel a little put out. He would definitely have aced a pop quiz, but Mimosa beside him was happy to display her happiness in knowing that there was no quiz.

Rolling his eyes, Nikolai concentrated on the much more preferable Harrington, and waited for the question. The moment it was posed, Nikolai's hand shot straight up in the air, and for once in his life, he was lucky enough to be granted to speak before Mimosa could say something stupid.

"Concentration." Nikolai supplied, his eyes moving to the Hufflepuff witch, Lyra, as he said it before they moved back to the professor. "If you don't concentrate whilst you're making a potion, all kinds of things can go wrong, explosions, melting desks, loss of eyebrows, and many other and less comedic outcomes. Therefore, I would say its one of the most vital components of any potion brewing.

PostSubject: Re: Anatomy of a Potion (All Years)   Anatomy of a Potion (All Years) EmptySun Mar 03, 2019 9:12 pm

She gave the professor a small smile and nodded as she said she already knew Lyra. "Oh, well, then nice to officially meet you!" With that she took her seat.

The mention of no pop quiz earned no response from Lyra. She really didn't care ether way, as she liked taking tests and quizzes in a way, but it was probably better for right now since she wasn't quite caught up. The news that they were mostly studying what sounded like basics was good news at least, because it meant that she didn't exactly have to be caught up.

She raised her hand to respond to the professor's question. Well, was she a professor if she was still a university student? The look from Squid boy made her blush slightly in embarrassment and look down. What was it lately with everyone pointing her out in classes?! Mary-Kate had pointed out the fact that she'd been the only one shivering in front of Jake, much to her embarrassment, and now anyone who was paying attention to him would know that the comment was at least partly aimed towards her.

When called upon she looked back to Squid Boy, though rather than accusing she simply gave him a smile as she spoke. "Another thing you need is a clean workstation. Including your chopping board, knives, caldron, everything your potion will touch will need to be clean. This prevents cross-contamination." Her smile turned from friendly teasing to amusement as her gaze moved back to their instructor. "But one of the most important things to a successful potion is a good recipe. If you have a recipe that doesn't work, there's no way your potion will turn out the way you want it to without sheer luck."

Anatomy of a Potion (All Years) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Anatomy of a Potion (All Years)   Anatomy of a Potion (All Years) EmptyMon Mar 04, 2019 9:34 am

Apollonia flushed a soft pink at the praise from the older witch and did as requested and move to sit by Sterling, giving the other witch a soft smile before she turned her attention back to Professor Harrington. Like many students, Apollonia was thankful that there was no pop quiz that day but she was also quite put out as she had studied the night before only falling asleep in the early hours of the morning.

Oh well, maybe another time.

Hearing the question asked and then listening to the answers, Apollonia was quite surprised that no-one had spoken the most obvious answer of all. Holding her hand up, the Slytherin fifth year waited to be called upon before she voiced her own answer.

"Ingredients. Good quality ingredients." She specified as she idly looked around the class. "Without good quality ingredients your potion, no matter how much of a great potioneer you are, will turn out to be low quality and could, potentially, lose its potency."

Her siblings had always hammered that into her head when talking about Potions and even though neither of her siblings decided to pursue the art of Potion making all three of them had aced their exams with EE's or O's.

"If you are using Potion ingredients that are stockpiled in shops, your best bet would be to question the shop keeper as to which ones had been picked recently instead of just grabbing whatever you need. If you are picking your own ingredients then the best time to do so would be either the full moon, new moon or one of the Solstices where magic is at it's potent and that leads to higher potency in the ingredients. And, contrary to popular belief, you can use the stasis charm on the ingredients to keep them fresh though it's best if the ingredients are stored in a clear, glass jar before the charm is used."

There, that should be enough of an answer.
