| Another day, another class.
Truth be told, the headmaster found he enjoyed teaching more and more as of late. He suspected it had something to do with the alternative being something akin to watching paint dry. That is to say, approving budgets, courting sponsors, and reassuring parents were not exactly things the aging man cared for in the slightest. It was, however, all in the job description, so he gritted his teeth and made it through. Teaching, on the other hand, was a break from the tiresome role of headmaster.
Indeed, sitting at the head of his empty classroom, Andrei felt the stress of his 'other' job fall away. Today would be especially enjoyable because he would not be the one teaching today. Rather, such a task would fall to the students. After all, today was term paper presentation day wherein each student gave an oral report or presentation on their term paper. One could only hope that each student had been working diligently, but only time would truly tell. |

| Mimosa was actually excited about today's class, it was her grand debut of course! When they were first assigned the term paper, the young model had not intended to do it. After all, she had much better things to do then memorize a bunch of facts about boring old Runes. Bu then Seema had began prattling on about how she was going to make her presentation interesting with additional facts and maybe go dressed as an old time scribe and the Slytherin's interest had been peaked.
This wasn't a boring assignment at all, this was like acting. What she did for work except with more words and more flair. Since then, the child had began work on her "act", choosing ehr topic with a little help from Miss Harrington and supplementing her oral report with special effects sent from the palace for the occasion. the night before, Mimosa had all but dragged Mercy to the Rom of Requirements to show of ehr presentation and the Gryffindor had liked it lots.
Which meant that for once, Mimosa was the first one down to the Common Room to meet the group getting ready to head to Runes, practically bouncing where she stood. Squid Boy and Karan came next, their heads close together as they discussed soemthing unimportant. then came Charles and Ji Hyun, which inevitably brought Catherine and Constance along and the last one was of course Emily. The group was just about to depart when Mimosa noticed Lilac skulking into view and promptly ignored her.
As was usual now, her hand was taken by Squid Boy even as he continued his conversation with Karan, barely looking at her. Almost as if to mimic the action, Charles roughly grabbed Catherine's hand though the girl did not object, merely letting out a giggle. The gaggle of Slytherins navigated the hallways in good cheer, some nervous about the report, others confident. Emily was considering faking illness and Mimosa was almost certain it would work. Professor Kessler wasn't very smart so she doubted he'd notice someone trying to get a free period.
The witch entered class hand in hand with Squid Boy who had now concluded his conversation with Karan and was leading them towards their seats. Telling him to hold on, she gently pulled her hand away and bounded off to the teacher's desk where the Headmaster sat. "Good morning, Sir!' she chirped, her shrill tone ringing off the classroom walls. "How are you fleeing! I feel great! Did you know the House Elves made my favoritest food today? And later on, I get to go to Hogsmeade and see my Jacques. And then I get to come back and do Qudditch practice. And then I can go hang out with Mercy! And then-"
"Mimosa!" someone called, clearly wanting her attention. Of course she would be the first person they'd want to greet upon entering, she was the most important one here after all!
"I'll catch you up to my whole week later," she hurriedly promised the Professor before skipping off to the source of the noise. ________________________________________________

| The report idea of his fathers was, as Andrei Kessler had always been to his son, dull as anything else in the world. Why would anyone want to listen to other students stumble through a short oral presentation on something they really didn't know anything about? Much less, how were they supposed to learn from that? Though, Nikolai was grateful for the breather in actual classwork, he wasn't impressed by his dad's efforts.
His own report had been drafted with little and less enthusiasm, Nikolai really couldn't care less about the presentations, but he knew that they were compulsory, so there was nothing left to say about it. Others were worrying about it terribly, and Nikolai could only find himself amused by such notions.
The Slytherin boy had waited with Karan in the common room that morning, talking rapidly about Quidditch as he waited for Mimosa to appear that morning. His words had only slowed in the moment he'd glanced across at the younger witch, stealing her hand with his own before he wandered up towards the sixth floor with their group, barely acknowledging Mimosa as the steady stream of Quidditch talk continued up the stairs.
They entered the class on mass, and Nikolai was about to show Mimosa to their usual desk when the younger witch detached herself from him, instead making her way to his dad to talk, as usual, about herself. Rolling his eyes at that much, Nikolai made his way to their desk, putting his bag on Mimosa's seat to denote it as saved, before waiting for class to begin. ________________________________________________ProfileThanks to Kitty for the signature! <3

| One last stretch and it would all be over. That's what Clara kept telling herself. She just had to make it through exams. A part of her urged her on: You've come too far to give up now.
Another part of her knew that was a logical fallacy.
The sunk-cost fallacy is how door-to-door salesman scam little old ladies out of their retirement funds.
Yet here she was, pushing through anyway. University loomed bright like a beacon on the horizon. Just a few more weeks and she'd be free. Ish.
Freer than she was now, anyway, which wasn't saying much.
But things were finally wrapping up, and every hurtle she cleared was a small but satisfying relief. This term paper, for example, had been nagging at her like a splinter under her fingernail for several weeks now, and today she would finally pull it out and be done with it forever.
Knowing this, she entered the classroom with anticipation rather than nerves. She may not love public speaking or presenting in front of the class, but if it meant she could finally check this project off her list, she couldn't wait to get it over with. She retrieved the report from her bag and set it carefully on the desk in front of her, lining the edge of the paper up with the edge of the desk so it was satisfying to look at.
And then she waited, quietly snapping her fingers together underneath her desk in an attempt to relax herself. |

| Of course his first assignment upon transferring and attending his favorite class would be to do a presentation that everyone else had already had weeks to do.
But, this was Ancient Runes! If he could whip up a report in any class in a short period of time, it would be this one. He was only grateful it hadn't been in something like Care of Magical Creatures, or something like that. He surely would have failed then, and would have beat himself up over it for the rest of the year. But Runes? Runes he could manage. He could practically hear his Père praising him, telling him not to worry about it, and that he had the "Runes gene". Of course, his Père was always the one who'd really and truly loved them, but Gabriel figured the man would be proud of him for taking an interest.
He himself was quite proud of the presentation he'd come up with for the class, and only hoped the professor would like it enough to give him a good grade. He needed all the good grades he could get to make up for the fact that he'd been absent from the school most of the year, through no fault of his own of course.
As Gabe entered the classroom he was much less nervous than he thought he'd be. He didn't like speaking in front of crowds too much, but this was just in front of a bunch of other students who were just as, or more nervous than him. Not too scary, right?
He gave the professor a tight lipped smile as he took a seat towards the middle of the room, trying not to draw too much attention to himself, though his sisters were already there, talking to each other in the back of the room loudly enough to earn a couple of glares from others. He sighed softly and tucked his head down, reaching to pull out his report and reading it over under his breath for the millionth time, though he knew he had it memorized already.
Better safe than sorry. |

| There they were, holding hands.
It took all the willpower in Andrei's being to suppress a sigh—he really had to talk to that boy. He had hoped to put the whole thing off for a few more months, but it seemed life waited for no man. Funny how that worked, time not stopping and all that. Oh well, for now, however, he could put off the much-needed talk because he had a class to teach.
Thank god he had a class to teach.
Greeting each student with the same half nod he always did, the headmaster watched silently as the classroom filled with students. Even after all these years of teaching he still got the same rush of adrenaline he used to get as a freshly minted graduate student right before starting a class. His hands still tingled and the hair on the back of his neck seemed to prickle. The only thing that had really changed was the aging vessel he inhabited.
"Good afternoon everyone," his voice sent a hush over much of the class as he stood up. "Today, as I'm sure you all know, is term paper presentation day."
He paused and began writing on the chalkboard behind him. He scrawled out 'Grading Scheme' in elegant cursive.
"If you recall from the beginning of the term I outlined the grading criteria for this presentation," he turned around and the chalk continued writing of its own accord. "First and foremost you can expect a large portion of the grade to be based on your factual correctness, second will be your interpretation and analysis of these facts, and third—this being a presentation—you will be graded on your speaking skills."
The piece of chalk fell to the small ledge by the board having written out the three criteria by which the presentation would be graded.
"So, if we have no questions," he returned to his seat. "I believe we can begin. Let's start with Miss Harrington, then Mr. Kessler, Miss Goldstein, Mr. Fletcher...and so on and so forth."
Leaning back in his chair, the man removed a notebook of his own from one of the desk drawers before turning his attention to what would surely be quite the show. When the Harrington girl was involved, well, the man had come to expect nothing less. |

| The Headmaster didn't really waste any time getting to the point, which suited Mimosa just fine. Of course he chose her first. Who wouldn't? Though the next person she listened for was Squid Boy and his name didn't come up in the first five meaning he'd been pushed to somewhere towards the end of he class. The child would have listened further for a "Mr. Boy" but who could focus for so long? Besides, she had the best presentation ever to give!
The young Slytherin rose to her feet, and promptly curtsied to her adoring audience who gave her a polite round of applause. She had practiced this before so Mimosa knew exactly what she was doing. No papers or books weighed her down as she stepped gracefully up to the front of the class, only a small, cube-like object in her right palm. Should someone examine the object closely, it might appear similar to a tiny rubics cube except most of it was black with only a few colored cubes in between.
"Bonjour and Good Afternoon," she began, a confident smile on her face as her light blue eyes danced across the room, seeming to rest on everyone in turn as they swept the area. She had learned the trick early on in her modelling career and it had stayed. "Today I will be talking about something early civilizations, both wizard and nomag, found to be simply... magical." A subtle tap on one of the colored cubes on her handheld device had the entire room gasping softly.
The projecting device - a custom Clement patent - was send from the palace for just this presentation. It acted as a 360 degree projection device that could change the atmosphere of any room and even reflect or edit existing images once the proper functions had been coed into the system. Jacques had explained it all to her and only because hew as the one explaining had Mimosa actually paid attention. Her favorite part about it all was how it made the room super pretty of course.
Because with the single tap, a sweeping hologram of the ocean enclosed the classroom, making it look like they were all underwater. Transparent sea life glided through the desks and tall seaweeds swayed gently on the classroom floor. Gentle streams of bubbles rose from random parts of the room and a holographic purple octopus slithered on to the Professor's desk, making it's home amidst the pile of scrolls resting there.
"Water," Mimosa announced happily, a stream of bubble escaping her own lips as if she really was speaking underwater. Once her peers had finished admiring what her device had done to the classroom, they would turn to see that the young girl at the front had also been transformed. No longer did Mimosa Harrington stand in her school uniform, the projection having changed her appearance temporarily so she looked to be in a glittering blue gown that ebbed and flowed very much like the water she was speaking of.
"Early civilization though water was magic because it gave them life, it gave them food, it gave them a way to travel and it kept them safe and clean. Some even worshiped bodies of water because of how important it was for staying alive. That's why whenever you see a picture of an old civilization's settlement, it's always near some kind of water source - but not the sea cause you can't drink the sea." Well, technically you could, having grown up in Carmel, Mimosa had accidentally drank the sea a few times, it just didn't taste very good.
So it became really important to be able to convey stuff about water through writing. To leave messages and write letters and tell people things about water. In the second century AD, the Elder Futhark script was really trending, but they didn't spell things like we do now. Instead they had symbols for water. " Another tap on ehr device and a bright gold upside down L with an a sorter lien extended outwards instead of flat floated int the classroom, scaring a tiny school of flounder fish playing about the chalks and dusters. The golden symbol went to rest on the blackboard.
"This is Laguz, the symbol that meant water. This symbol was not just used to talk about any water though, only big water, like lakes and rivers that could be drank. Like, you couldn't say "can I have a cup of Laguz", that would b silly." the girl waited as some of the students chuckled before she continued. "Travelling was really had back then cause they didn't have planes or flying horses or broomsticks, so when someone set out to search for a potential new moving site for their group, it was possible that they might never ever come back. Bu that mean they left a trail of symbols for people who had to follow. And following the Laguz symbol meant they were heading towards water which was good."
the girl waited a bear, before pressing another button on her device. This time, the octopus from Professor Kessler's desk rose. It turned towards the students and then began to emit dark, holographic ink everywhere. "Of course, the older people were also afraid of water because it could hurt them, either by being too much or too little," Mimosa added as the ink cleared, now leaving the pseudo underwater classroom strangely devoid of the previously happy fish and incrustations."If there was too much water, it would flood over and drawn the people who built their houses too close, and if it was too little, it wouldn't be enough. So they believed they had to keep the water happy. And so they made more symbols to represent danger levels of the water.
More taps, more symbols flew onto the blackboard, this time coming to rest beneath the Laguz one. "As you can see, these symbols represented how much water there was, how much sea life it may contain, how often it flooded the banks and when the water level was at its lowest, like in the summer when the sun was like super hot so the water got lesser and lesser."
As if to illustrate her point, the underwater ambiance began to ebb from the classroom, revealing the ceiling, then the higher walls, then the bookcases. It stopped receding though just above everyone's heads.
"One there was a way to record the moods of the water, it became easier to work around it. People started developing irrigation systems that meant they didn't have to live close enough to the water to risk losing things in floods. They would also build dams that stored water for the time when it wasn't enough. Basically once they started writing things about water, conveying information was easy and they could bold more on that because everyone knows just talking to each other isn't enough. Sometimes you have to write things down so you don't forget. hey wrote down lots of things about water." Another tap, another stream of symbols with their meanings flowing into the now crowded chalkboard. The water symbol found on pipes and aqueducts, the danger water sign on caves and in flooded mountain areas, high and low tides indicated by an amalgamation of the symbols for water, sun and moon, symbols representing deep and shallow waters and so on.
"And then there was magic, real magic," Mimosa added, a look of near wonder on her face which she had practiced for longer than she cared to admit. Her blue eyes opened wide as a brilliant orb of light appeared above their heads, slowly sinking into the water and dispersing silvery ripples across them all. Slowly, the projected water level in the room rose once again, engulfing the classroom and one by one, the vanished sea creatures began to peek out. A turtle unfurled itself from Squid Boy's bag while a gaggle of Goldfish swam out from Ji Hyun's desk drawer. Suddenly, the water was full of holographic life again.
"Some wizards found the really magic in water, and were able to harness it for themselves. They created runes imbued with the power of water, which in turn lead to spell making. Almost all early water related magic was runic because people hadn't invented wands yet. Using magic through your own body was dangerous for most people - though I can't imagine why, it works fine for me - so they used stones, tablets, wood things and even old parchment-y things to write their runes on, and since water was the most available source to draw the magic from, they incorporated it the most. There is also some research that states they befriended mythical creatures like mermaids and stuff who taught them how to use water magic, but I don't really believe that." Of course, everyone knew Merpeople weren't real, there was no need to explain that bit.
"In short, water has been a very important part of our civilization because... of all the stuff I said earlier. Therefore, it had to be presented in written form which started in Runes and then evolved later to more complex symbols and then to the modern alphabets we use to spell out words. I think that how important something is at the time is directly proportionate to how quickly and concisely it needs to be conveyed. That's why you just had the one upside down L thingy to say Lagus in 200 AD but now you need to spell it out properly because now there's like no urgency to find water, its everywhere and our life doesn't depend on it. Also we can drink anything, not just water, to stay alive. But back then people had no hot chocolate or coffee or wine so they had to rely on water for everything. Which was why they had to create symbols to immediately convey things like presence of water, depth of water, quality of water and dangers associated with that particular water supply. Cause it was super important to know that stuff immediately."
A final tap on her cube and the underwater environment disappeared, reality blinking harshly back into everyone's visions. Mimosa was once again in her pristine school uniform, an emerald green ribbon in her hair to indicate her house pride. The symbols on the blackboard however remained, glowing faintly against the dark backdrop.
"And that concludes my report, everyone. Please remember to drink eight glasses of water a day to stay healthy." Grinning at everyone, the witch paused when her gaze landed on their sickly professor. 'Maybe ten glasses for Professor Kessler," she added to a much louder chuckle from the crowd before she neatly curtsied and then returned to her seat. ________________________________________________

| Mimosa's report lasted about two seconds in Nikolai's mind, she'd barely started before the witch's irritating tones had been dulled down by the boy. He'd probably have been off elsewhere, truthfully, but something in the classroom had changed at the start of Mimosa's presentation which put them underwater. Well, it made them feel like they were underwater, of course the were not actually under water.
Nikolai's eyes caught sight of the octopus on his father's desk, and for the rest of the witch's presentation, his eyes had not moved from their target. The octopus had moved out towards him in one moment, squirting holographic ink everywhere that brought a smile to Nikolai's lips.
Eventually, though, the presentation had ended, the sound of applause meeting Nikolai's ears bringing him back to the room in time to see Mimosa hurrying back to her seat beside him. That meant it was his turn. With a small sigh, Nikolai stood from his desk, and moved to the front of the class. His eyes did not meet his father's before he turned back to his peers, already knowing he was going to get a mediocre grade and not wishing to see his dad's dislike for such ideas.
"It seems I'm at a little bit of a disadvantage for my presentation." Nikolai started, a nervous smile on his lips as he spoke. The boy's hands were gently wringing themselves together nervously, Nikolai Kessler did not like public speaking. He'd never liked public speaking. "I don't have flashy gadgets like Mimosa to bring my point home.
"Nor do I actually have any fresh material to offer." Nikolai admitted, worrying with his hands a little more. "I was going to do water, you see. Which means... without regurgitating everything Mimosa just said, we've ended up with the same project.
"However, Mimosa did miss a little bit, so I guess I will simply add on to the project she's just given without boring everyone." The boy finished, stealing himself a little bit so he could work out how to go about this.
"Mimosa noted how the rune for water is Laguz. This is correct, but there is also another Rune for water, the rune is known as ūruz. This Rune, however, can be translated in a couple of ways. It can mean water, or rain, but it can also be translated to aurochs, which is a kind of ox. The ūruz rune comes more from the Viking period, though, which may be why Mimosa didn't really touch upon it in her own presentation. Laguz is the most common, afterall.
"In the eighth century onwards, the ūruz rune was simplified to ūr, and normally represented rain or snow." Nikolai added, feeling a little bit out of his depth now that he was running out of things to say. Looking out to his classmates for a moment, the boy grimaced uncomfortably at the bored faces looking back at him.
"And that concludes my presentation." The boy finalised, hurrying back to his seat beside Mimosa and the refuge of his book. ________________________________________________ProfileThanks to Kitty for the signature! <3

| Unlike many of his students, Andrei's eyes did not sparkle with wonder at the Harrington girl's presentation. Sure, he was quite impressed by the girl's theatrics—she was a performer through and through. That said, it would be less than professional to allow one's self to show favoritism in any way shape or form, it just wasn't done. And, well, the girl did need to work on the eloquence of her speech as her age showed true despite the fancy effects, not that he'd hold anything like that against her grade-wise.
Nonetheless, he clapped when appropriate and even spared her a good-natured smile to the joke at his expense. The girl had done well, better than expected even. Scribbling down a few more notes, Andrei waited patiently for the next presenter to begin. Nikolai, he hoped, would provide a more academic approach to the topic than Mimosa—it was why he had allowed the two to work on the same topic.
Alas, it seemed that his own son could not deliver on any such hopes, not that the headmaster's face betrayed any of the disappointment he felt. With all the charisma of a wet paper towel, Nikolai gave an abbreviated presentation with little substance. In fact, it seemed to Andrei that it was more an addendum to Mimosa's presentation more than anything else. Regardless, the man clapped and offered a sympathetic smile before scribbling down a few notes here and there.
The class continued much like this for the rest of the allotted time. Some presentations were better than others, of course. Andrei, however, remained stoic as ever so as to give no clue as to the nature of the grades the students were surely fretting over as they watched their friends present. Soon the last student presented and the bell rang causing the mass of kids to jolt from their seats and hurry out into the halls.
Why was everyone always in such a hurry to leave?
