November 11th [Nikolai] Empty
PostSubject: November 11th [Nikolai]   November 11th [Nikolai] EmptySat Feb 02, 2019 10:13 pm

Andrei was a man of his word.

Before taking the post of headmaster, he made a promise to Marie: he wouldn't change. Sure, time, sickness, and the like could and would continue to change his appearance—he was never so vain as to dabble in cosmetic magic like he suspected his predecessor did. Indeed, in five years he would no doubt look a bit more worn, but his heart would remain. Neither Marie nor Andrei wanted to lose the person they fell in love with to work, fame, and fortune. So, it was in keeping with the person the headmaster had always been, that he now found himself outside on a brisk November afternoon.

Having eschewed his robes in favor of a more relaxed outfit it would be hard to peg Andrei as anyone of any importance. The bespectacled man wore dark jeans, a wool sweater, and a pair of low-cut brown boots that clunked dully on the dock as he walked out onto it. Stretched out before him the Black Lake’s inky waters seemed to go on forever. On the far side, he could make out the ripples that told of an oncoming gust of wind, but beyond that nothing. He was, as far as he could tell, alone.

He hoped, however, that that would soon change.

A few days prior he’d sent a letter to his son, Nikolai, asking to meet him. At first, he’d considered just going to talk to him, but decided against it to ward off the jeers that the boy would surely have to endure after such a visit. Yes, contrary to what his children surely thought, he did not go out of his way to annoy them (Well, not too often anyway). That said, one might have forgiven the father had he indulged his initial instinct. After all, today was a special day for both him and his son.

It was November eleventh; Nikolai’s birthday.

November 11th [Nikolai] Empty
PostSubject: Re: November 11th [Nikolai]   November 11th [Nikolai] EmptySat Feb 02, 2019 10:36 pm

The note from his father had come a few days prior to Nikolai's fourteenth birthday. As he'd sat in the common room waiting for dinner that evening, the note had arrived via a House Elf and Nikolai had read it over as he lounged in a chair by the fire, revelling in the needed break from Mimosa Harrington-Clement that he'd needed for the day. The comfort of a moment's peace was crushed, though, when he read through his dad's words, asking to spend the day with him. Or, the afternoon after lessons, anyway.

Thankfully there was something of a chill in the air that kept people inside the castle walls at this time of year, so Nikolai knew that meeting his dad out on the dock of the Black Lake would not be overseen by too many people. But... the rumours and the teasing may or may not arise if he was seen...

It was after much deliberation on the pros and cons of accepting the invitation that Nikolai had finally relented to the notion of going to see his dad. There would be a present, wouldn't there? And... perhaps, though Nikolai would never admit to wishing for such things, his mum would be in attendance too? Though, that would only scale up the ridicule if people saw, so Nikolai quickly pushed that idea back down, focusing instead on the prospect of spending the afternoon with his dad.

After his last lesson, Nikolai had quickly changed from his robes in to a pair of jeans and a grey jumper, hurrying out in to the common room, only to be confronted by Mimosa. Where was he going? Could she come? Did he need help finding where he was going? Who was he going to see? Being the stupid girl she was, Nikolai had easily dissuaded Mimosa from joining him for a trip to see the Headmaster about some over due Runes homework -- apparently she still hadn't connected the dots, and that suited Nikolai just fine -- and had been out in to the grounds not five minutes later.

All the way, Nikolai looked over his shoulder, worried he was being followed, or he would be seen, but the Slytherin had made it all the way to the dock without seeing a soul. Not a soul, save his dad who stood on the dock in his 'home' clothes, as opposed to the robes he usually wore around the school.

"Hey, dad!" Nikolai greeted, moving to stand beside his dad on the dock and trying to work out what the older Kessler was looking at.

His fourteenth birthday... spent with his dad, because he'd never opted to tell anyone in his common room when his birthday was. Though... somehow Bushrah had worked it out. The small gift hadn't been given to him directly by the witch, but the assortment of sweets and small card had obviously come from the witch who'd asked him if he'd received any presents that day.

"I can't stay long, Ji Hyun wants a game of exploding snap later." Nikolai offered, but the small smile on the Slytherin male's lips showed that he really had no intention of cutting this short, it was just the said thing of a teenager who didn't want to admit that they appreciated the time they got to spend with their parents. Even if his dad was a sickly, boring, old man, he was still his dad.

PostSubject: Re: November 11th [Nikolai]   November 11th [Nikolai] EmptySun Feb 03, 2019 12:03 am

"Hey Nik, happy birthday," he glanced over at his son with a soft smile on his face. "Don't worry, we won't be gone long; I got permission from the headmaster and everything."

His smile cracked into a wry grin at his own attempt at humor.

"Now, come on," he held out his hand to the boy. "If we keep your mother waiting any longer we'll never hear the end of it."

When and if Nikolai took Andrei's hand, both father and son would soon find the picturesque landscape of the Black Lake folding in on itself like some strange kaleidoscope. For half a heartbeat the two stood in perfect blackness only to be disturbed by the rush of colors and tugging sensation familiar to anyone who had ever apparated before. Truthfully, Andrei much preferred muggle travel, but time was of the essence and he doubted that there was a train fast enough to cover the distance he needed to cover. Plus, what good was being the headmaster of Hogwarts if you couldn’t flout the anti-apparition jinx every once in a while?

When the world finally came to a stop, the two wizards were standing in a light dusting of snow outside their London home. In typical Marie fashion, the front door was already decorated with holly and a wreath. The Christmas holiday was always a big one in the Kessler household and each year the matriarch of the family put up decorations earlier and earlier or so it seemed anyway.

Sighing, Andrei muttered a few words in what sounded like Latin. Runes flared with a blue light around the doorway and then fell dormant once more. After an attempted break in a few years back, the man had taken extra precautions to keep his family safe against the dangers of the world and runic magic was the best way he knew how.

Before he could push open the door, however, it pulled inward to reveal the love of his life, Marie. The fair-haired witch swept out from the doorway and pulled both father and son into an impromptu group hug that the older wizard was certain would break his ribs.

“Oh, I’ve missed you two,” she huffed before pulling away and back into the house. “Helen just got done with the cake, you’re right on time.”

Andrei, it seemed, made timeliness a bad habit in everything he did.

Shrugging to his son, he followed his wife inside. If Nikolai did indeed follow he would have to listen to his mother rattle off a thousand questions a second as they made their way to the kitchen. Was he eating alright? Did he get enough exercise? Did he do his homework? Did he have any friends? Did he get enough sleep? Why didn't he write as much as last year? Did he wear proper safety gear for Quidditch?

The headmaster couldn’t help feeling bad for the kid, there was no way Marie would let him leave until he’d answered all her questions. On the bright side, the smell wafting through the house indicated that Helen made one of her best concoctions, pineapple upside down cake.

Apparently, culinary school was paying off.

November 11th [Nikolai] Empty
PostSubject: Re: November 11th [Nikolai]   November 11th [Nikolai] EmptySun Feb 03, 2019 2:27 pm

"Daaaad," Nikolai groaned in response to the awful joke of having asked the Headmaster for permission. Dad jokes, whatever was going to be next? But, despite himself, despite the appalling joke, a smile touched the younger Kessler's lips, if only a small one, because the humour was appreciated, even if it was completely terrible in every way.

The next sentence caught Nikolai off guard, though, as he looked up to his father with curiosity in that moment. "We're going home?" Nikolai asked, much too eagerly for a boy trying to pretend to be completely cool and not needing his parents love and affection any more. Reaching out for his dad's hand, the now fourteen year old had only to wait for a moment before the crack of apparition sounded and the unpleasant feeling of travelling across the border to England made itself known.

Perhaps being the Headmaster's son wasn't all bad, Nikolai reflected.

He had to be one of the few kids in Hogwarts who could say they'd apparated out of the school, right? Hell, even Mimosa Harrington-Clement couldn't apparate in and out of Hogwarts! Smiling to himself at that victory, Nikolai could dispel the sickening feeling of his dad's choice of travel, before the door was opening without his dad's touch to reveal his mum instead.

"Hey m-" The greeting was cut off as he was enveloped in his mum's arms, his own arm wrapping around the witch instead. After the witch let go, Nikolai looked across at his dad with a playful eye roll, before hurrying inside after his mum who was immediately spouting out the usual questions that came with coming home.

"The House Elves cook us more than we can ever eat, mum, you know that!" Nikolai reminded his mum in respect of the first question, smiling ruefully at the idea of ever going hungry. "And, if you miss lunch in the Great Hall, then you can always sneak in to the kitchens -- though don't tell the Headmaster, I hear he'd not too happy with students ensuring they're not hungry and walking around at night. And, if all else fails, Mimosa Harrington-Clement always has a massive basket of food from her grandparents in France that she shares around. French Fancies are quite the cake, I must say."

But, of course, the questions didn't stop at food as they moved on through their house.

"Don't you think dad would have told you if I hadn't been doing my homework? I can't get away with anything at the school, you know that!" Nikolai pointed out to his mum as she really thought he wasn't keeping up with his school work. "Most of it's too easy, though. Especially Care of Magical Creatures, and Herbology. Potions has gotten a lot more interesting this year, though. Dad made a good appointment in that department.

"But, most interestingly, I got on to the Quidditch team, I told you in my last letter. First match is this weekend, actually..." Nikolai trailed off to look towards his dad, curious in that moment. "Could mum come and watch? Mimosa's... well... Jacques Clement always comes to watch Mimosa play... But, not as a big thing, obviously, just... I don't know... Can she, dad?" Nikolai asked. It wouldn't exactly be cool to have your mum come to watch, but if his mum just came to watch, and didn't come over ot him to talk to him about it, it wouldn't be uncool, right?

Most people -- and by that, he meant Mimosa and her following -- hadn't worked out that he was the Headmaster's son, so they wouldn't be able to place his mum, would they? It was a good idea, Nikolai had decided on that much.

"What's new at home?" Nikolai offered as they entered the kitchen, finding his older sister slaving over... well, he wasn't overly sure. But there was already a pineapple upside down cake on the counter beside her. "Hey Hel," Nikolai greeted his sister politely, moving over to see what she was preparing whilst he waited for their mum to fill them in on whatever was going on in her life, and the neighbourhood.

This time, at least, Nikolai wouldn't be switching off to the female counterparts of the conversation. His mum and sister usually had something interesting to discuss, unlike all the girls at school.

"Well," Andrei cast a sidelong glance over to his wife. "I don't see why she couldn't attend."

"I'd love to," Marie flashed the smile that always tugged at her lips when around her family. "Oh, I'll be right back..."

And with that, the witch hurried out of the room leaving Andrei, Helen, and Nikolai alone. Andrei for his part took a seat at the kitchen table and eyed the cake with hungry eyes. He always had a weakness for anything pineapple, there was something about the sweet yet sour contrast in the fruit that tickled his taste buds in just the right way.

"Hey Nik," Helen acknowledged her brother's presence briefly, but it was clear that her attention was on the task before her. "You'd have to ask mom about what's going on."

Wielding both a wand and a whisk, the young woman had not noticed when her mother left the room. Instead, she focused on the long incantation that now flew from her lips in what sounded like French—the language of the culinary world. Beating the whisk through what looked like colorless goop, she continued to intone until a brown liquid spouted from her wand and into the goop. With a few more movements of the whisk, the goop came to resemble chocolate pudding.

"Look at that," Helen sheathed her wand and lay down her whisk as she turned to her brother. "I just learned this last week, sugarless pudding with all the taste of sugar!"

Helen had always been one for dramatics.

"The chocolate flavoring won't last cause Gamp's law," she didn't bother explaining the law. "But it will last long enough to give us all the flavor and no cal—"

"Come on you two," Marie interrupted as she returned to the room. "Nikolai has some presents to open and we have some cake to eat."

Placing a mess of well-wrapped presents on the kitchen table, Marie took a seat by her husband. Each member of the family got Nikolai at least one present. Marie knit him a dark green wool hat and bought him a book on Quidditch strategy and tactics; Helen got him a gag gift ring that would make the wearer appear invisible to themselves, but not to others and made a batch of lava cookies; Andrei got him a stack of magical creature books and three tickets to the upcoming Quidditch world cup.

All that remained was a little bit of singing, present opening, and cake eating.

November 11th [Nikolai] Empty
PostSubject: Re: November 11th [Nikolai]   November 11th [Nikolai] EmptySun Feb 10, 2019 11:30 am

With the permission from the Headmaster to allow his mum to come to see his first game of Quidditch, Nikolai couldn't help but smile triumphantly upon getting what he wanted. There, Mimosa Harrington-Clement wouldn't be the only one to get special treatment at Hogwarts now! Not that he would be telling anyone that his mum was coming to watch, of course, but it was a personal victory of his and nobody was going to take that away from him.

"Thanks, dad!" Nikolai insisted from across the room as his mum disappeared to Merlin only knew where.

Helen was then talking about some law or other and then cooking. It took Nikolai a moment to catch up with his sister's explanation and remember the laws of transfiguration. Food couldn't be made out of nothing. Which meant whatever his sister had used to make the brown goop now going in to the food must have been around, but her cooking prowess was somewhat lacking if it wore off as quickly as she had stated? Or maybe it was just one of those things that all cooks had to deal with if they weren't using the actual ingredients, but transfigured ones. Having not studied that field himself, Nikolai was left to simply guessing at his sister's capabilities instead.

"No sugar?" The boy asked, screwing up his nose and retracting the hand that was heading towards the bowl to steal a taste. "You're disgusting, Hel," he added for good measure as his mum returned with an armful of presents that always made the Slytherin boy feel much more warmly towards his family as a whole. Though... this year, Nikolai couldn't help but notice the amount of presents gathered upon the table for his birthday, was about the same about of presents Mimosa got on one of her monthly packages from the Palace.

Trying not to feel too put out by that thought, the boy moved to sit next to his dad, and pulled the first present towards him. Flipping over the tag, Nikolai noted that the first present was from his sister. Shredding the paper from the first present, Nikolai let out a small laugh at the joke present his sister had gotten him, before an idea hit... The smile upon his features turned to one of a smirk at the idea before he thanked his sister. Opening her second gift of cookies, Nikolai's stomach gave a soft growl that showed that all this food around him was working up a hunger in the teenager. "Thanks, Hel! I'll be sure to take them back to Hogwarts for my midnight snacks!" He joked, following on from the earlier conversation with their mum.

Next, Nikolai picked up the squishy looking parcel and after quickly checking the tag, shredded the paper. Inside was a Slytherin green woollen hat, most likely handmade by his mum. It was incredibly soft to the touch, and without hesitation, Nikolai pulled it on to check the fitting. The woollen hat fit snugly around his head, covering his ears in a manner that would be most useful when out in the grounds for the rest of the winter. "Thanks, mum!" Nikolai managed before he pulled his next present towards himself.

There were no prizes for guessing what this present was, and with more care than he'd spent on the previous present, Nikolai unwrapped the book to find something incredibly useful now that he'd made the Quidditch team. Grinning at the book, Nikolai looked over to his mum. "This is going to be great! We definitely need some more tacticians on the team, and perhaps it will help me to teach Mimosa how to use her bat properly!" Nikolai explained, thumbing through a couple of pages to look at the contents of the book before he caught himself and reached over for the second to last present in the stack.

More books followed on from the one from his mum, though this time from his dad. Nikolai has always found this amusing, the fact his parents gave gifts separately rather than jointly. Most parents didn't segregate, Nikolai had learned through his school career, but his parents were unique that way. These books, though, were of magical creatures, and it was quite clear from the excitement on the boy's features that he was very, very interested in getting through them as quickly as possible. With one more present to open, though, Nikolai put the books aside, and pulled the last, flat present towards himself with a curious look.

Glancing to his dad with mild confusion as to what the present might be, Nikolai considered it once more. Curiosity got the better of the boy, though, and as he finished carefully opening the envelope, it popped up away from his hands on it's own accord, moved to the middle of the table, before fourteen small figures made of paper flew from the opening of the card. From each end, the paper transfigured itself up to make six hoops on sticks, and with the realisation of what this meant, even before a disembodied voice filled the kitchen, Nikolai knew.

"THE 2026 WORLD CUP IS YOURS TO ENJOY! COME AND JOIN IN THE EXCITEMENT NEXT YEAR AS ITALY HOST THE WORLD CUP! WITH MANY AND MORE OF THE WORLD'S FINEST TALENT ON SHOW, THERE'S NO REASON FOR ANYONE TO EVER MISS OUT!"

The commentary had Nikolai stunned as a mini explosion of colour finalised the announcement as the team in red on the paper scored against those in blue. The card resumed it's original state after that, and Nikolai slowly reached forth to take up the card, his hands shaking slightly with the realisation that his dad had just bought him tickets for the Quidditch World Cup...

Inside the envelope were three tickets for the World Cup, likely only three because they were so, so difficult to get a hold of. Looking sideways to his dad, Nikolai's mouth opened to say thank you, but a lump in his throat caught him before he could and instead, the youngest Kessler threw his arms around his father in lieu of a thank you instead.

Sometimes his dad was a boring, old man, but at times like this, he could be... somewhat cool.

But only somewhat.

PostSubject: Re: November 11th [Nikolai]   November 11th [Nikolai] EmptyWed Feb 20, 2019 2:22 am

Returning his son's hug, Andrei found himself almost crushed by a hug almost as strong as his wifes. Every once in a while a father had to spoil his children and the tickets to the world cup were just that. The headmaster had pulled a few strings, sat through a couple boring coffee meetups, and spent more money than he cared to admit getting the tickets, but he had gotten them. Suffice to say he owed a particular Quidditch promoter a favor or two as well—box seats did not come cheap.

Nikolai's reaction, however, made it all worth it.

Finally pulling back from his son after what felt like an entirety, he broke into song along with Helen and Marie. The well-kept secret of the Kessler family was their musical talent and it showed in the two rounds of happy birthday that followed. As was tradition, whoever's birthday it was—Nikolai in this case—would be the one to cut the cake and distribute it in something resembling an equitable fashion. Then, over the next hour and a half or so the small family swapped tales, traded barbs, and shared a good laugh or two more often than not at Andrei's expense.

Alas, all good things eventually came to an end and this family gather was no exception.

"Well," Andrei spoke up having just finished putting the last of the dishes away. "Nik, I think it's time we get going. I'm sure you have better things to do than hanging out with us."

Good-natured sarcasm dripped from the man's words.

"Say your goodbyes," he gave Marie a peck on the cheek as he moved to leave the kitchen. "I'll be at the door when you're ready."

With each step that Andrei took towards the door he felt the weight of his waiting responsibilities more and more acutely. It was nice to spend time with the family, but it was time to get back to work. And yet, in a strange way, the man felt relieved, work gave him purpose and focused his mind. Funny how that worked, no?

Stopping by the front door, Andrei waited.

PostSubject: Re: November 11th [Nikolai]   November 11th [Nikolai] EmptySat Feb 23, 2019 2:47 pm

From the point of getting the Quidditch tickets, Nikolai was much too giddy with excitement. Even the embarrassing singing of Happy Birthday could not dampen his mood -- and that was sung twice -- from the high his dad had elicited with his present. All thoughts of anything outside of the family were squashed as the cake was brought to the table, and Nikolai got to cut and distribute the cake in possibly not the most even slices in the world.

After giving his dad the largest piece -- he both deserved it, and it was his favourite cake -- Nikolai had distributed the rest in an almost equal fashion and tucked in to the pineapple upside down cake with the fervour of a teenage boy. Helen and his mum had out done themselves with this one, though, and Nikolai savoured the last mouthful before letting out a contented sound of approval at the end.

Thanking them for the good food, the family descended in to the different stories of what had been happening. Whilst Helen recounted her tales of culinary school, his mum recounted the news of the families that lived in the neighbourhood and what was going on, his dad talked about boring school stuff for the most part, and by the time all of them had done, Nikolai was bursting to give a blow by blow recount of his Quidditch try out, before continuing quickly on to the subject of the Giant Squid and all the sightings he'd made this year. Everyone got their fair share of time to talk, but Nikolai used his to its full potential with the knowledge he would be listened to, and his tales would be appreciated.

As the hour grew later, though, Nikolai had to stifle a yawn. A whole day of classes, followed by the excitement of going home was getting the better of him, and as if knowing that this was the case, his dad prompted him with the notion of heading back to the castle.

As his mum quickly found him a bag to take the presents back to school with, Nikolai allowed his sister to pull him in to a hug to say goodbye. Begrudgingly -- as all teenage boys did -- Nikolai gave her a small hug in return, before insisting she send him food parcels with her bakes in them. Helen pretended to think about it for a bit, before promising to do so. With his sister turning to tidy up the kitchen, Nikolai was once again caught up in a hug with his mum. The usual click of joints that had been squeezed too hard sounded, and as his mum held him out at arms length, she couldn't help but marvel about how tall he was getting.

Rolling his eyes, Nikolai dipped his head enough to kiss her cheek, thanking her for the presents once more and relieving her of the bag filled with presents to take home, before he moved out to find his dad once more. Grabbing his jacket from the peg, Nikolai shrugged it back on before noting himself as ready for heading back home.

Before they would apparate back to Hogwarts, though, Nikolai looked up to his dad with a small smile. "Thanks, dad." He said, truly meaning it, but not elaborating on how much he had enjoyed coming back home, if only for the evening, to spend his birthday with the family.

It was by far better than spending his birthday any other way.

Andrei's soft well-meaning smile was all the response Nikolai would get before the headmaster clapped a firm hand on the boy's shoulder. The room lurched, spun, and faded to darkness as the all too familiar sucking feeling of apparation washed over the aging man's frame. In a matter of moments that felt much longer than it should have the two Kessler men would find themselves back at the end of the dock that they'd left from a few hours prior.

"Nik," his grip loosened and fell away from his son's shoulder. "There's one last thing I'd like to give you."

Reaching into his jacket pocket, Andrei produced a burnished disk of gold. Cradling it in his palm, he held it out for the boy. This would be his final gift for the year, a family heirloom passed down from his mother.

"My mom gave this to me and told me to give it to my son one day," he paused ever so slightly. "And I guess today is that day. I'm sure you'll figure out how it works."

The item in question was a compass whose needle seemed to spin aimlessly with neither rhyme nor reason. In truth, the compass did not seek north unless that was what its holder wished it to do. Akin to a dousing rod, the compass would point to the person, place, or thing that its holder focused on. Ringing the inside of the compass one could faintly make out the source of this magical power, nearly twenty or so rings of inhumanly small runes.

This compass was to blame for Andrei's devotion to the study of runes.

PostSubject: Re: November 11th [Nikolai]   November 11th [Nikolai] EmptySun Mar 03, 2019 12:25 pm

The familiar tugging of apparition pulled through Nikolai, and once again he was not fond of it. Especially after just having eaten, it left the fourteen year old feeling more than a little off when they landed back on the dock at Hogwarts. Taking a moment or two to suck in some cool air, and push the thoughts of throwing up the upside down pineapple cake his mum and sister had worked so hard on.

His attention was pulled from that -- and perhaps his face looked slightly ashen in that moment -- when his dad spoke of having something else for him. Just one last thing for his birthday.

Concentrating on this news, Nikolai turned to his dad to find the older Kessler pulling something out of his pocket. The metal caught in the light of the moon, and Nikolai had to focus on the object quite hard to get it to come in to focus. It was disc shaped, and gold. A pocket watch, perhaps? The boy thought to himself for a moment, mentally sighing that his dad would think he wanted a pocket watch, but his dad continued on.

It was a family heir loom, of sorts, and he had to work out how to use it?

Nikolai took the golden disc from his dad's hand, and turned it over carefully, trying to work it out. He found the latch and gently opened the piece. Inside -- and only just visible in the dark -- was a compass pin, which was spinning around aimlessly where it sat. A frown touched the boy's features in that moment, trying to work it out before looking up to his dad with curiosity.

"Don't I get a clue?" The boy asked, a hint of a smile playing on his lips because the challenge had been set, and he would crack it, or else he could be removed as a Kessler. "Thanks dad, I'm not going to be able to sleep now!" He added, his eyes reverting back down to the compass that had now focused on pointing to the castle.

Curious, Nikolai thought to himself, wondering why it had stopped, but not knowing in that moment.

This was definitely a curious present, but one he would cherish. It had meaning, Nikolai would not miss that fact, but that would not be known for some time.
