The Talk [Nikolai] Empty
PostSubject: The Talk [Nikolai]   The Talk [Nikolai] EmptyTue May 28, 2019 10:40 pm

Pulling aside a curtain, Andrei looked out onto the darkening street outside his London home. The street lights had just come on, Mrs. Sanford was out walking her dog, and it looked like the Ziers were having yet another house party, but no Nikolai. Admittedly, the younger Kessler boy had no business being home for another hour or so, though it did not stop his father from checking back constantly—he never got this nervous, not even before his largest lectures.

Thankfully, there was no one else home to see the man's less-than-composed state. Helen was out with her culinary school friends on something they called 'Wine Night', while Marie, who had recently convinced herself that she needed to lose weight, was at the gym. This left the aging professor all by his lonesome, which normally he would have enjoyed by translating some of the latest archeological texts or working on a text of his own—you know, fun, relaxing things like that.

Alas, he found himself able to do neither of these things.

Allowing the curtain to fall back into place, the man returned to the living room where he seemed to be spending a majority of his time of late. Settling into his favored armchair, he kicked up his feet on the ottoman and retrieved the book he'd borrowed from Helen some time ago. Typically, he wouldn't read a book featuring a love triangle between a werewolf, a vampire, and a human, but after the first chapter he found himself sucked in. And, despite the jabs and jeers it drew from both his wife and his daughter, he continued to read it whenever he had the chance. Andrei had always been a sucker for a decently written story and it was a great way to pass the time as he waited for his son to return. At the very least, it kept him from obsessively checking the front door every five minutes.

What kind of a name was Bella anyway?

The Talk [Nikolai] Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Talk [Nikolai]   The Talk [Nikolai] EmptyWed May 29, 2019 6:32 pm

Summer had begun with it's usual lacklustre appeal, everyone denoting they would keep in touch over the holidays, and after a week, this grew to be nothing more than an odd text here or there. The first couple of evenings the boys had been more than happy to keep up a stream of chat in their WhatsApp group, but after Nikolai shot down the questions on how kissing Mimosa was with little and less commentary to keep the others entertained, it had fizzled out.

After all, he didn't want the other guys thinking they could get their own Mimosa kisses!

Though, secretly, the youngest Kessler was still immensely proud of himself for doing what he had. He'd made a show to the whole school, and now, he was pretty sure no one could question his claim to the witch. After all, he'd spent six months holding her hand around the school, and in the final days, he'd kissed her. The fact she was annoying as hell put something of a dampener on it, but at least he knew how to shut her up now.

It had been a shame to leave the castle when Nikolai was on such a high, but there was nothing he could do about that much. Once more, Nikolai had opted to work all the hours he could over the summer leading to the World Cup so that he had money for his trip, ready to make all kinds of bets, and buy enough keepsakes of the World Cup to last him a lifetime. His parents didn't seem to mind too much, his mum was busy with her own stuff, Helen was off seeing her friends, and his dad... well, his dad was doing whatever it was he did with Runes.

If it all worked out well, Nikolai would probably have saved ten Galleons by the World Cup, a tidy sum for any teenage boy to have in his pocket.

The day had been relatively quiet at the Quality Quidditch Supplies store, it was much too early in the summer for students to be buying for school, but there were a number of people hurrying in to the shop for World Cup apparel for July. Nikolai hadn't been rushed off his feet, though, finding himself with ample time to sit behind the till to read through the book he'd bought from the bookshop a few days earlier which gave a good overview of the vegetation found in freshwater lakes. The links to both Herbology and Potions were outlined in it, but Nikolai was working through the implementation of this knowledge to Care of Magical Creatures as best he could.

There was still a long way to go in that project, though.

By the time the shop had closed, Nikolai was feeling quite tired, but getting paid to do very little work, and a lot of your own personal research had it's positives. Heading back home, Nikolai was pondering what to do that evening, remembering he needed to text Mariah to see how she was getting on and giving her one of their usual updates every couple of days.

"I'm home," Nikolai called out as he opened the front door, his feet making a beeline towards the kitchen because his stomach had been calling out for sustenance for the past hour or so. "What's for dinner?" Nikolai asked to the house as a whole, hoping his mum had something good planned despite the lack of good smells in the house. The fridge door opened easily to his hand, and Nikolai reached in to take out one of the pre-made fruit juices his mum had opted for on her current health fix. Next, Nikolai moved to the cupboard which held the crisp packets, and found himself a packet of NikNaks before moving to put his bag on the dining room table.

As always, he would leave it in the way, kicking his shoes off as he sat at the table at started the much too quick process of devouring the crisps and juice to, just about, tide him over until dinner time.

Marking his page, pushing his glasses back up his nose, and taking a breath, Andrei reluctantly pushed himself up from his seat. Nikolai could not have come home at a worse time; his voice called the professor back from Port Angles where Bella had nearly met her end and transported him back to the unpleasant task at hand. Perhaps that was why he enjoyed books like this, they allowed one to escape reality if only for a moment.

"I was thinking of ordering takeaway," Andrei said, wandering into the dining room with book in hand. "Your mom and sister are out for the night and I'm not feeling up to cooking."

Placing his book down, he removed his son's bag from the table and placed it on the ground. For whatever reason, Marie disliked anything unnecessary being on the table and, though she was not here, her husband made it a habit to clear anything off before she had the chance to get herself into a tizzy over it. Truthfully, Andrei wasn't too sure why it so concerned her—tables were made for holding things he figured, but if it made her happy then that was reason enough for him.

"So," he huffed, taking a seat across from his son. "How was work?"

Marie, who had given Helen a similar talk some years ago, had counseled that he not jump right into the whole relationship topic right away. It was better to work up to it first, she said. So, work up to it he would and hopefully it wouldn't end in too much of an awkward silence. He liked to think that Nikolai was a reasonable enough kid and would see the need for such a conversation. But, then again, he was also a teenager...

PostSubject: Re: The Talk [Nikolai]   The Talk [Nikolai] EmptyTue Jun 04, 2019 8:16 pm

The answer coming from his dad instead of his mum made Nikolai look up from his bag of NikNaks with mild confusion. Had his mum denoted that she would be out that evening instead of being home and cooking for him? The teenager couldn't remember, truthfully, and with his dad in charge of cooking... it took all of Nikolai's efforts not to groan aloud. Thankfully he hadn't, either, for the notion of takeaway was given and Nikolai's features lit up.

"Chinese?" The boy asked -- though maybe more insisted than anything -- of his dad, before thinking. "Or Indian food. Not pizza, or fish and chips." Nikolai finished, by this time becoming a little thoughtful over the options of food they could have. "Or... maybe a kebab..."

The final one was weighed up visually by the boy before he shook his head at the idea, leaving it open to the first two options he'd given. But, before he could speak further, Nikolai noted the book his dad was reading and pulled a face. "Seriously?" The boy asked, clearly not liking the idea his dad was reading such terrible literature. "That book is for teenage girls, dad." Nikolai huffed, upgrading the older Kessler to even more dull than he already was in that moment.

"It was work." Nikolai replied without much more enthusiasm than those three words needed. "Wasn't overly busy, but I got to do some research on freshwater habitats in the down time. Apparently it should pick up closer to the World Cup, but I'm not sure. Normally it's busier the last week of the holidays, but I'm getting paid to read, so I don't mind."

Scrunching up the now empty crisp packet, Nikolai placed it on the table before returning his attention to his juice, chugging on the bottle for a short while before placing it on the table. "When are we going to order food, I'm really hungry." Nikolai added, once again returning to the teenage boy thought process of food, food, food.

The Talk [Nikolai] Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Talk [Nikolai]   The Talk [Nikolai] EmptySun Jun 09, 2019 5:54 am

"Chinese it is," the man confirmed, pulling out his rarely used phone and struggling through the process Helen had shown him countless times. First the passcode, then swipe to the left...no the right, find the app, log in, and, finally, place the order. Honestly, the whole process felt much more complicated than it needed to be. It would have been so much easier to have called up the restaurant and ordered but, alas, times were changing and the eldest Kessler would be damned if he was left behind by a technological revolution just because he didn't like it.

"And Twilight's actually a decent story," Andrei chided, looking up from his phone. Criticism of other family members in the Kessler household was perfectly acceptable, if not encouraged. However, both Andrei and Marie were sticklers for perspective and liked to think they had raised their children with the same inclination. Or, rather, they hoped they had. "Don't knock it till you've read it yourself."

Returning his attention to the phone, he clicked through a few restaurants while nodding along with his son's account of his day. Half listening and half trying not to lose his wits to a poorly designed app, the eldest Kessler kept his opinions about Nikolai's extracurricular activities at work to himself. On one hand, it was heartening to hear the boy was keeping up with his studies but, on the other, it was worrying to hear he was not, well, working at work. It wasn't worth a lecture and the subsequent argument that would follow, he'd learned that well the first time around with Helen.

"I just ordered it," he gestured to his phone before putting it back in his pocket. "I think...?"

"So," Andrei's tone softened as he continued to build toward the subject of relationships. "About the Cup, I know we were planning on staying in the main camp but Adri offered to put us up at her estate. You remember her right? She used to watch you and Helen when you were younger back in Egypt."

Adriana Ricci, acquirer of artifacts for the rich and famous, had been a family friend since the Kessler couple met her on one of her assignments in Cairo. Initially, Andrei and Adri—as she preferred to be called by her friends—were at odds as they were both working to acquire the same ancient manuscript, Andrei for a museum and Adri for some rich German. After a strange series of events, the pair found themselves playing a chess game for the manuscript which, after a back and forth game, Andrei prevailed in, winning both the manuscript and Adri's friendship. Since then, from time to time, she would tip the professor off to the location of a few of the rarer artifacts, while Andrei ceded the more common ones he found to her—nine times out of ten Adri's clients couldn't tell the difference between trash and treasure.

"She has a place in Tuscany," Adri had done well for herself with rich patrons the world over. "It's supposed to be rather nice and she has a personal portkey right into the main camp that she's willing to let us use as well."

A pause.

"I know we'd miss some of the festive atmosphere, but it might be fun too. Apparently, she has a pool," he offered a weak smile. "I just didn't want to change plans without running it by you. So, what do you think?"

This was another conversation entirely and, at this point, Andrei knew he was procrastinating. He should have just led with asking about Miss Harrington. And yet, here he was.

Oh well.

The Talk [Nikolai] Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Talk [Nikolai]   The Talk [Nikolai] EmptyMon Jun 10, 2019 1:51 pm

As his dad took out his phone and started to fiddle with it, Nikolai looked away. His dad was useless, at the best of times, when it came to technology. Normally Helen would step in, or worse, his mum would try to aid him and they would both look ridiculous as they tried to work it out. Unfortunately for his dad, though, Nikolai wasn't the sort to offer his help, knowing his dad could do it, even if much slower than was necessary.

"There's nothing to read, dad," Nikolai replied. "It's a stupid book about a stupid vampire and werewolf, who get stuck in a love triangle with a mortal. The vampires sparkle -- which I don't need to tell you is stupid as anything -- and the werewolves can, apparently, change in to their wolf form in mere seconds and at a whim. Which, again, I don't need to tell you is stupid, werewolves have no control over when they change form, and they're not cute little puppies, their very dangerous beasts who should not be around people.

"Not to mention, the idea of love triangles is stupid at best." Nikolai finalised, knowing enough from what he'd heard from others. He hadn't read it, and upon hearing the creatures in the book were completely characterised wrongly just put the boy off. How could you make such horrible errors? Though, as he spoke of werewolves, the boys mind couldn't help but travel to one Gryffindor in particular, and the unsolved mystery of her monthly illnesses. Not that Nikolai would admit to ever have noticed Mimosa talking about such things, because that would mean he'd listened. But Mimosa always mentioned it, 'her' Mercy was sick, everyone had to know about it.

With the notion of the food being ordered, Nikolai simply nodded, nothing to add there.

It was the next part that truly captured the youngest Kessler's attention, the frown upon his features easily showing what he thought about going to stay in Tuscany. Of course his dad would want to be completely and utterly boring. Stay away from the main camp of the Quidditch World Cup and the atmosphere of the Camp as a whole. He was the most boring man in the world, and anything close to excitement would be too much for him. The memory of the woman in question was there, though not overly prominent, but that wasn't of much concern to Nikolai right now.

"If you want," the teenager replied grumpily. What was the point in arguing, it was probably already organised anyway. Turning his wrist towards him, Nikolai checked the time upon his watch. "What time is the food going to be here? Might as well get a shower in before it comes." The boy asked, already starting to get to his feet without really waiting for his dad.

As if Mimosa didn't make him feel bad about the Quidditch already, his dad just had to make it worse.

The Talk [Nikolai] Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Talk [Nikolai]   The Talk [Nikolai] EmptyFri Jun 14, 2019 3:41 pm

Andrei only shrugged at his son's offhanded dismissal of Twilight. He'd been through this same song and dance before with Helen and, though Nikolai would surely deny it, the two siblings were very much alike. Much like any self-respecting Kessler, they stuck to their opinions until provided with enough evidence to the contrary, and when it came to one's likes/dislikes of literature there wasn't much in the way of evidence. It was purely opinion which was, perhaps, for the best; it would, after all, be rather boring if everyone could be swayed into having the same opinions.

"It'll be fun, I promise," Andrei said, trying to counter the boy's less than enthusiastic response to the change in housing arrangements. "And yeah, go ahead and take a shower, dinner should—"

The headmaster sighed to himself; Nikolai had already slipped out of the room and his distant steps could be heard on the stairs. What did the boy expect him to do, turn down Adri's generous offer? Oh well, he'd have to deal with the fallout later, for now, and with the turn of a few pages, he was back in Port Angles where Bella had just escaped death. Or, at least, he was until his phone buzzed, announcing the arrival of food.

Nikolai, if he returned to the kitchen, would be met by the pleasant aroma of Mrs. Wung's Chinese Kitchen. The smell of freshly steamed rice mingled with stir-fried vegetables and orange chicken reminiscent of the meal Andrei and Marie used to share in Hong Kong together on date nights. For his part, the eldest Kessler had already served himself and was poking around with his chopsticks, waiting for his son to return. For, when the boy had served himself and taken a seat, his father would finally broach the subject he had been avoiding all night—it was best to be direct.

"So," he began, his eyes on his son. "How is Miss Harrington?"

The Talk [Nikolai] Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Talk [Nikolai]   The Talk [Nikolai] EmptySat Jun 15, 2019 1:51 pm

The fourteen year old moved up the stairs with little and less enthusiasm, taking out his phone and checking it only to find boring messages from the boys in his year. Quidditch talk was all well and good, normally, but when your dad had just proved how utterly boring he was, even talk of the impending Quidditch World Cup couldn't bring the boy around.

Grabbing a change of clothes from his room -- a fresh pair of boxers, a pair of jogging bottoms and a fresh t-shirt, Nikolai disappeared in to the bathroom and under the shower. The shower routine was, as was becoming more announced over the summer, longer than it had been before. The fourteen year old would spend anywhere pushing twenty minutes in the shower where before he had managed it all in around ten. Needs must, though.

As the boy towelled himself dry and pulled on the clothes he'd picked out, he felt much better. His shoulders much less tense, and his body feeling much less pent up than when he'd left the dining table. Below, the sound of the door opening and voices came, denoting the food was here. Pushing the towel to the side of the room with his feet, Nikolai padded gently back down the stairs to the very familiar smell of Chinese food coming from the kitchen.

Stomach growling, the boy quickly served his own food, picking up the chopsticks that always came with the food and tucked in to the food hungrily without talking to his dad in that moment. He still wasn't happy, and the quicker he ate, the quicker he could hole up in his room for the rest of the evening.

"So," he began, his eyes on his son. "How is Miss Harrington?"

The rice Nikolai had just been eating caught in the boy's throat, and after spluttering it clear of his windpipe, the boy reached for his juice once more and took a deep drink. Did his dad know? But how could he know, his dad wasn't a Legilimens... The fact Miss Harrington had been on his mind only a short while ago, though, was not something he was going to confess to his dad, that much was for sure.

"I don't know, we're on summer. She's probably doing whatever adults do that they find fun." Nikolai replied, incorrectly summarising his dad was talking about the Potions Professor. "Why?" Nikolai added, curiosity getting the better of him.

The Talk [Nikolai] Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Talk [Nikolai]   The Talk [Nikolai] EmptyWed Jun 19, 2019 5:45 am

Watching his son's less-than-subtle reaction, a slim, knowing smile that all parents seemed to pick up by instinct alone flashed across the older Kessler's face. Andrei's body may have started its decline a bit earlier than he would have liked thanks to his brush with death, but his mind was as sharp as ever, if not more so. Then again, it didn't take too many brain cells to put two and two together.

Children, and teens especially in the man's experience, often forgot—or perhaps didn't understand in some cases—that every single adult around them had once been the same age they were. Adults had seen, done, and felt many of the same things the younger generations did many times over, albeit through a different lens and in a different context but similar nonetheless. The whole thing was funny and, indeed, Andrei found himself unable to suppress a light laugh filtered through his nose.

"Sounds about right, but that's the wrong Harrington, I'm afraid," he said, having composed himself. "I mean the younger one who always seems to have far too much energy, you two seem close. What's she doing with her summer?"

Naturally, the man refrained from adding 'You know, the Harrington half of Hogwarts saw you kiss'. He had already decided that a direct confrontation such as that would only result in Nikolai storming off because it was what he, Andrei, would have done at his age. Yes, this way was much better,; just ease into the subject and then take it from there—he could almost hear Marie's counsel in the back of his mind saying the same thing.

Hopefully, she was right.

PostSubject: Re: The Talk [Nikolai]   The Talk [Nikolai] EmptyWed Jun 19, 2019 6:35 pm

As his dad pointed out that he hadn't meant Professor Harrington, Nikolai could feel the dread fill him. Merlin's beard how had he forgotten about Mimosa?! Deciding against trying to save face now that he'd already completely driven off a cliff with the whole topic, Nikolai turned his attention back to the actual question he'd been posed.

How was Mimosa?

"I don't know," Nikolai concluded simply. "I haven't spoken to her since school finished. She's... off in India, or something with her Jacques." The boy explained, the mocking tone of the last two words quite clear as he spoke because Mimosa always used such words and it was just... weird.

Concentrating on his rice -- and perhaps trying to get it on to the chopsticks with a little extra force than necessary -- Nikolai scooped up a couple of mouthfuls of the food without looking to his dad. There was something else that stood out, though, and after finishing his mouthful, Nikolai spoke up once more.

"And we're not close." Nikolai added, quite sure on that point because they really weren't close at all. Mimosa was uninteresting to him, and the witch was much to self-absorbed to know anything about him. "We just have mutual friends and play Quidditch together."

Yes, that settled the account well, there was nothing more to it, and definitely nothing else he wished to discuss with his dad.
