The Ordinary Wizarding Levels sucked.

An the reason Mimosa knew they sucked was because they sapped the fun out of everything. The last really fun night she and her friends had had was on Valentine's Day and after that, everyone had simultaneously found a corner to crawl into with a book. Even people who were always ready to hang out had wondered off towards the library and school was becoming a boring place.

The fourteen year old didn't understand why the students were getting so focused on studying just as all the teachers were actually letting up a little. They didn't receive as much homework as they used to, they were simply encouraged to revise in their free time. Mimosa had done very little of that, mostly because she had a life.

The main reason the young Slytherin had steered her housemates towards Herbology today was because she couldn't take another stuffy classroom. When the timetable for the week had gone up, the witch had declared they would be attending Miss Harrington's class and everyone else had simply resigned to it, including Squid Boy from behind his fairy tale book about mermaids.

Though, as she walked in, hand in hand with the boy, the Seeker had to admit, she was very good at distracting him when she wanted to.

"Hi Miss Azalea,' she greeted the teacher cheerily as she walked in behind Karan and Ji Hyun. "How come you're teaching Herbology? Do you not like Potions anymore?"

"Hello Mimosa, Nikolai, Karan, Ji Hyun, Catherine, Constance, Lilac. And no Mimosa, I'm just filling in for a bit," the older witch replied withe her usual warm smile.

"Miss, you forgot Squ-" Mimosa attempted but just then, a gaggle of Ravenclaws arrived, occupying the teacher's attention. Oh well, it wasn't like Squid Boy had even noticed.

Herbology had been put on their weekly routine by Mimosa, of course. The choice of the class had been a welcome one by the Slytherin male when he'd noted that the professor in charge was Professor Harrington, and not their usual teacher. It had made the choice much more bearable, in truth, as he was pulled down to the greenhouse by Mimosa in her enthusiasm to get out of the castle for a little bit.

She was the only one not affected by the stress of the incoming O.W.L.s, probably because she didn't actually understand the magnitude of the results on their lives would have. It had dawned on him just after, though, that Mimosa wouldn't need O.W.L.s or N.E.W.T.s to get what she wanted in life, she already had everything at her disposal. It had made sense then, to Nikolai, why the witch hadn't really bothered with any of her studying.

As they stepped in to the class, met with the usual enthusiasm from Professor Harrington, Nikolai motioned for them to take up one of the stations closest to the Professor as they stood by to wait for the lesson to begin.

Five minutes, later, and their professor was jumping in to the lesson, reminding them of the presentations they were being asked to make on their chosen plants. Nikolai had looked around when the Professor had called for the first volunteer, and was unsurprised when almost the whole class looked away from the professor.

Almost.

Mimosa's voice chimed in to denote she would go first, though, as usual.

"Mimosa, you must be very confident in your presentation," Miss Azalea said as she called on the young witch to step forwards.

"Of course," the fourteen year old replied with a grin, standing up and making her way to the front of the class. "Because I picked the best plant of all to talk about," she added, taking her lace on center stage, a point where she always felt the most comfortable. "Mimosa" she finished, taking a small curtsy.

When they had all been made aware of a looming presentation, the young prefect didn't have to look for for a topic. Going by the logic that she was the most interesting person in any room, Mimosa was sure the flower named after her would be the most interesting plant in any room. And so her decision had been made.

"The first thing everyone should know abotu the Mimosa plant is that it's really shy. If you try and touch one, it will curl its leaves inwards to try and hide. That's why you have to be extra careful when approaching a Mimosa..."

Her presentation continued, talking of the seed, habitat, different genomes and anything she could Bremen from what Gaspard had once read to her about the flower.

"And finally, the best fun fact of all," she concluded her presentation with a charming grin. "The Mimosa plant was named after me."

The classroom let out a few laughs and claps, cohering her all the way back to her seat.

"Now let's see, shall we have Seema go next?" Miss Azalea suggested, pointing to the Ravenclaw hiding her face behind a thick Transfiguration textbook.

Nikolai had heard only Mimosa's chosen topic, and along with those who didn't like to lap up Mimosa's self-indulgent nature, rolled his eyes and turned away from the subject. The boy was not interested in the Mimosa plant, it had absolutely no use to him, truthfully. Not that many plants did, truth me told. Those who hadn't taken the opportunity to switch off had no doubt been bored out of their minds with Mimosa's talk, Nikolai only tuning back in when the tone shifted in the witch's voice to one of finality.

It wasn't as if it was the boy's fault, there were much more interesting things -- or more specifically, people -- to concentrate on.

As Mimosa took her seat beside him, Nikolai gave a soft -- and false -- congratulations to the witch, that didn't really register with more than an 'I know' as she took her seat. Hiding in plain view as Professor Harrington looked around their class, Nikolai was more than thankful for the call to land upon Seema instead of himself.

The witch had moved to the front of class, looking a little bit less than happy with having to present her chosen topic. Not really surprised, though, Nikolai was kind enough to switch on to her chosen topic, one that would revolve around the topic of Deadly Nightshade, or Belladonna as it was more commonly known. True to her Ravenclaw name, the witch had indeed done a tonne of research, not only in to the plant itself, but also highlighting key points in Magical History where the use of the plant had brought some key personnel to their knees. Nikolai had listened with half an ear, tuning in for the fun parts, tuning out for the dull facts about a plant that wasn't entirely magical, but had it's uses.

Professor Harrington had congratulated her on the well structured presentation before sending the witch back to her seat, and calling upon the next person in the class.

"Charles, what have you put together for us?" The professor had asked, once again earning a sigh of relief from Nikolai as he was passed over again.

The applause that broke out once Mimosa had concluded her presentation was expected, even Squid Boy was in awe witch, once again, did not surprise Mimosa. the teenager took her seat happily beside him as Charles was called on next to present his plant. If nothing else was good abotu the boy, at least he wasn't crazy over his exams, Mimosa noted with some degree of conviviality.

The boy walked up to the front of the class with his usual, bordering on arrogant grin and spoke. "Now, I've been told this is alright in the pursuit of academia so don't be selling me short, Professor Harrington," he began with a leer. "The plant I chose to study, in all kinds of depth, is the Clitoria Ternatea."

What followed must have been really bad because Mimosa saw some of the girls blush as Charles went on in great detail about the plant, sometimes even calling it a "she". Miss Azalea didn't blush though, in fact she looked rather bored.

When Charles was done, he took a bow. the Professor did not knowledge him further, instead turning to Mimosa instead.

"Nikolai, let's see if we can class this up a bit. What do you have for us today?"

Nikolai had tried not to smile at the choice of Charles' plant for presentation, but he was a sixteen year old boy. Any comment referencing sex was going to get a reaction from a boy his age, and though he knew he shouldn't find it funny, it took some balls to pick that as your chosen subject to present before a professor. It was Professor Harrington's less than impressed look that sobered the Slytherin quickly, though.

Charles eventually finished up his presentation, though, getting a hero's welcome from the other boys in the class, whilst the girls tittered on in hushed whispers about how disgusting Charles was.

If Nikolai had thought he'd get away with another round without being called upon, though, the boy had run out of so much luck. Professor Harrington's eyes had found him in the next moment, and called upon him to follow up from Charles' crude antics. Giving a small nod, and grabbing his cue cards to help him, Nikolai moved to the front of the class, trying to clear the small lump that was forming in his throat.

There were many things Nikolai Kessler had shone in this year.

His rise to prefect had elevated his station in the school. His role as Quidditch Captain had made him more popular than the prefect badge could have. And the fact Mimosa Harrington-Clement had-

The front of the classroom had come all too quickly, and Nikolai looked back at his peers with a little bit of apprehension.

Whatever prefect, Quidditch Captain, and a girlfriend had given Nikolai Kessler, it was not the confidence that came with talking in front of a group of people -- especially not more than seven-- with a lot of confidence.

"Well, I..." Nikolai started, trying not to get overwhelmed by the thirty-ish students looking back at him expectantly. "I did my research, and presentation on, uhm, the gillyweed plant. As many of you will know if you came to Professor, uhm, Professor Venizelos' class in the winter term, the plant is... is used for... well, breathing underwater, to put it simply."

From there, Nikolai would continue on in broken sentences for another five minutes as he tried to get through the origin of the plant, the main uses of the plant, the care section was a little bit easier by the time Nikolai got there for most of the faces in the class had turned away from him, probably bored because he couldn't get the information out in a very interesting manner. By the time he was finished, the only people still listening were Professor Harrington and Seema, after fending off the couple of polite questions each of them had, Nikolai had been more than ready to return to his seat, and all but ran back to his seat when he was told he was done.

The class continued in much the same manner until their time was done. Professor Harrington had denoted they would get their results in due course, and had dismissed them back to the castle. With a sigh of relief, Nikolai had packed up his bag and waited for Mimosa to be ready to leave before he took her hand. The not-so-subtle hint that they should sneak off from the rest of the group for a while because they would be too busy studying -- and therefore being boring -- and they could do something a little more enjoyable.

The agreement from Mimosa -- and the list of more interesting things they could do -- followed, and the two Slytherins left their classmates to go off on their own adventure.
