CLASS: Winter Term -- CoMC (Nerisei & Dimitri)

Since the beginning of term, things had... settled between Dimitri and Nerisei. That was probably the best explanation for it. Their understanding of not worrying about the future had helped to take the pressure off of both of them, and with it, something had flourished. Dimitri wasn't sure whether you would call it a relationship, or not, but he knew that Nerisei and he were... well, together, he supposed.

Their days together consisted of studying together, or else practicing the extensive kissing that seemed to occupy every other moment in their lives. Only really spending time apart when their lesson plans didn't match, or when Nerisei had had to go to her Head Girl duties. Anne still didn't like to look at him too friendly when they were together, and Dimitri's friends were insistent that they had to be 'fucking' with the amount of time Dimitri spent with the witch -- "or, she's just in to the puppy face" Phil had joked one time leaving Dimitri to grimace in response. He didn't much appreciate their comments, and gave little and less information up to them because it wasn't their business what happened between Nerisei and himself.

Unfortunately, it didn't stop the teasing, but he would never give up the information about what he and Nerisei got up to.

With the couple of months that passed, the weather had grown cooler. The grounds had shown signs of frost in early December, which made people think that Professor Venizelos had lost his mind with the announcement of a class in the Black Lake. Dimitri had known this wasn't the case, and reminded his classmates that they were witches and wizards, and therefore could perform spells to keep them warm even in almost frozen lakes. This didn't help many of them, but Dimitri had signed up for the class regardless.

The morning of the class had seen Dimitri being one of the first Ravenclaws to leave the Tower, rather excited for the swim -- and what choice of breathing apparatus they would be using to submerge in to the depths of the Lake. He wasn't, however, the first one down to the class. That was saved by the lanky Slytherin Prefect who was talking to the professor excitedly about the aquatic wildlife of the Black Lake, and, if Dimitri caught it right, way too many questions about the Giant Squid.

Dimitri had acknowledged his cousin with a small nod, before waiting for the rest of the class to arrive, his eyes taking in the light lapping of the lake upon the shore and trying not to show his own enthusiasm for getting in to the water as soon as they could.

For Nerisei, Care of Magical Creatures had always been a rather enjoyable subject. Both, for the knowledge but also for the professor who waa teaching the class. Odysseas Venizelos was an amazingly handsome man, and Nerisei was surely not the only girl who attended this class just to stare at the mysterious, yet extremely intelligent man. But this was not the only reason she was attending this class, of course.

The young witch had always been interested learning new stuff, and keeping her grades as high as they could possibly get. That meant that she attended as many lessons as possible. Besides, it did well for her Head Girl reputation. The Ravenclaw had managed to be quite active with the rest of the students, especially with the younger ones, always there to help in case they needed something. But when she was not occupied with the younger years, she found herself busy with the older years. Especially with a specific Ravenclaw male that had stolen her heart all over again.

Her relationship with Dimitri had developed quite nicely now that she didn't pressure him about an unsure future, but rather kept his present quite fruitful. Kissing Dimitri had been Nerisei's new hobby lately, and as the days passed, the teenage witch found herself wanting to be with him more and more. Which was why she had found herself attending today's CoMC lesson, despite the fact that they would be swimming in the middle of the freaking winter.

Dressed warmly, Nerisei reached the Black Lake moments before the lesson started. Dimitri was, of course, already there, looking excited as ever. "Don't be so excited. I'm really scared!" Nerisei admitted, a little sigh escaping her lips. At least she had Dimitri to keep her afloat.

Of all the people Dimitri had been expecting to arrive at the Care of Magical Creatures class, Nerisei hadn't been one of them. He didn't think she'd mentioned it, truthfully, or, if she had, Dimitri hadn't put two and two together to realise she had meant she would be here. For the swimming class. When the witch couldn't swim.

"Hi," Dimitri replied, sobering himself a little in the presence of the witch beside him. Whilst he was excited to explore, he appreciated Nerisei would not be so. "You're going to be fine." He added to her comment about not looking so excited.

They kept up a small amount of talk until the class began, and Professor Venizelos explained what they would be doing that day. The goal would be to swim down to the bottom of the lake, meet with the mermen and ask them questions that came up. The way they would be getting down in to the depths of the water would be to use gillyweed, which would give them about an hour down in the lake. Provided for all, were wetsuits in which to change in to, which had already been charmed to keep them warm.

They were all ushered forward to pull on the wet suits, and after five minutes, the class was looking expectantly between the professor and the water.

"A volunteer... Moreau, come on." Professor Venizelos announced, getting a little bit of a dark look from the teen in return.

Doing as he was asked, Dimitri moved forward to the front. Presented with the gillyweed, Dimitri couldn't help but feel more than a little self-conscious as he moved to the waters edge. Putting the plant in to his mouth, Dimitri chewed on it for a few moments before the effects came in to being, and he clutched at his throat. The gills stemmed from his neck, and his hands webbed up. The unpleasant, slimy mass in his mouth made him want to throw up, and from the bank the professor called for him to submerge in the water to breathe.

Following the instructions Dimitri dipped down in to the water. Breathing out, the boy cautiously drew air back in. Without filling his lungs with water. Putting his hand above the water with a thumbs up, the boy swam backwards in to deeper water, but not too far, he'd told Nerisei he would wait for her, and he wouldn't go back on his word.

The soft reassurance Dimitri gave earned him a small smile, but Nerisei knew well enough that it was not going to be easy and she would certainly not be fine, if Dimitri weren't there. A small part of her did imagine Professor Venizelos wrapping his arms around her, in case of an emergency, but she was sure that he would end up being pissed at her. So all in all, it was not worth it. Not to mention the embarrassment that would ensue, when the school found out she could not swim.

As everyone moved closer to grab a suit, Nerisei followed suit, changing into it and sighing in pleasure as the warmth engulfed her. At least they would not freeze to death, even though she could not understand why Professor Venizelos decided it would be wise to have an underwater lesson in the middle of the winter! But being magical had its benefits, and Nerisei found herself relaxing in the suit, as she moved back into place.

But then Dimitri's name was called.

And Nerisei's eyes went from the male next to her to their professor and back again. She didn't want to be alone, and Dimitri had promised her he'd stick by her side, in case something happened.

The Head Girl watched Dimitri move forward --like the brave man he was-- and take the gillyweed from Professor Venizelos. Nerisei knew how bad this thing tasted, so the moment Dimitri started chewing on it, Neri felt a shiver of disgust come over her. She was dreading the moment so bad. But as soon as the effects took hold, the young witch watched as Dimitri's features changed right before her eyes. Webbed hands, gills down the side of his neck...

"Go in, Moreau! You need to breathe!" The professor yelled, and soon after, Dimitri was diving in. A moment passed. Two. A single thumb emerged from the water and Nerisei let out a sigh of relief. He was okay. Though, that meant that it was now her turn to do the same. Getting into line, Neri took the gillyweed, bringing it up to her nose and making a small sound of disgust. Pinching her nose closed, the young witch put the slimy mass in her mouth and started chewing.

It was better than drowning, that was for sure.

As the effects took hold, Nerisei's hands went to her throat, as she suddenly realised that she could no longer breath outside of the water, and quickly pushed past a few students --earning a few glares-- and diving in. Breathe!, she kept yelling at herself mentally, and the moment she did, everything felt... normal.

Except she couldn't swim.

Panic ensued in seconds, and the young witch found herself frantically looking around for Dimitri. Water might not enter her lungs, but that did not mean that she knew hoe to survive underwater!

Despite the cold, the water felt nice against the Ravenclaw's skin as he swam around in a small circle. There was nothing like being in the water to make you feel free, and Dimitri now knew that he needed to find ways of obtaining Gillyweed in order to feel more alive when he came swimming. The boy caught himself, though, remembering that he needed to look out for Nerisei.

Turning back towards the shore, Dimitri lifted his head enough to be able to see the witch, but not so much as to compromise his own breathing. Finding the Head Girl on the shore, Dimitri moved across to where she was, and tried to motion for her to come to him. He saw the panic on Nerisei's features as she took the Gillyweed slightly too early, and rather than being half submerged in the water, she was still on the shore. The run in to the water would have been comical had it been anyone else, but as it was her, Dimitri had hurried across to where she was

The flailing limbs of the Head Girl made it difficult to help her in the first instance. The trashing churning up the lake's bed and making the water murky. After a couple of failed attempts, Dimitri had finally grasped on of her hands in his own, and his thumb had made quick work of drawing soothing circles in to the back of her hand.

If the witch took a moment to relax, Dimitri would take her other hand and draw her closer to him with a small, reassuring smile.

"Remember, you have to kick gently." He reminded the witch, his voice carrying weirdly in the water... distorted slightly. Dimitri would bring his hand from Nerisei's up to her eye level and show her the movement she should have been making. Beside them, the rest of the class had gathered, and the Professor was motioning for them all to follow.

Dimitri had looked back to Nerisei to see if she was ready to go deeper in to the lake, down to the bed in the middle. He wouldn't push her to go if she didn't want to, but he would lift their joined hands up, and change his grip so that their fingers were interlocked. "I won't let you go." He promised, waiting for her decision on the matter.

Panic did not allow Nerisei to see that Dimitri, the person she was actually frantically looking for, was already by her side, trying to get ahold of her, softly enough as if not to startle her, but firmly enough to show her that he was there. And that he would not let her go. Thankfully, the male managed to find an opening and grab her hand, causing the young witch to whirl around immediately, anxious, but as her eyes landed on Dimitri, she immediately leaned closer, her heart racing. She shouldn't have come to this lesson, deep down she knew that very well, but how could she miss the opportunity of learning and being with Dimitri at the same time?

"Remember, you have to kick gently."

A nervous giggle escaped the witch's lips at the weird sound that ended up being Dimitri's voice. Speaking underwater was weird, and once the sound of her own giggles touched her ears, Nerisei ended up giggling even harder, the tension slowly dissipating. The wizard had lifted a hand to show her what she needed to do, but Nerisei still didn't feel confident enough to try on her own. Class was already moving deeper though, and Nerisei did not want to keep Dimitri waiting even longer.

Thankfully, the wizard had made sure that she felt as safe as possible, interlocking their webbed hands, and catching her eyes. With a small nod, Nerisei started to softly kick her feet, as Dimitri lead the way towards the rest of the class. Deeper and deeper they went, and the more time passed, the more Nerisei neared Dimitri, their bodies almost blending together, their hands still interlocked. She felt safe with him, and swimming was just... easier. Because deep down, Nerisei knew that Dimitri would not allow anything to happen to her. Not to mention that he was an excellent swimmer!

Nerisei was about to ask Dimitri how long until they reached their destination, but a movement on her left had caught her attention. Turning her head to the left, the Head Girl came face to face with a Mermaid, holding the hand of her little one. Apparently, Nerisei and Dimitri had been an inspiration for the creature, who was looking at them with a fascination that was mirrored in Nerisei's gaze. "Dimitri..." The witch murmured, unable to pull her eyes away from the creatures. But there were more...

A few seconds later, Nerisei realised that the class was practically surrounded by Merepeople. A gasp left her lips, and Neri immediately turned to Dimitri, fascination written all over her face. "Oh my God, Mitri! This is amazing!" The Ravenclaw exclaimed with a small laugh. Perhaps, her decision to come was not that much of a mistake.

Nerisei had gotten used to the water much quicker than Dimitri had expected. The fear she had shown before the class started ebbed away as they moved deeper in to the water, and the Ravenclaw couldn't help but feel... proud of her. He knew this wasn't something she was comfortable with, the fact she'd gotten in to the lake was a big milestone, but as they swam deeper, it was just proof of how amazing the witch was.

Dimitri had kept his promise of not letting the witch go, as well, and they'd made easy work of catching up with the class. Just in time to be immersed by the pod of mermaids that lived in the lake. Nerisei's swimming was forgotten in that moment, taking in the creatures before them with wonderment that brought a smile to the boy's lips as he watched.

"Dimitri..."

"It's alright," Dimitri encouraged, taking in all of the creatures around them. Normally, they weren't aggressive unless provoked, so they should be alright. Surely, the professor wouldn't have brought them down here if it was going to be an issue, too.

"Oh my God, Mitri! This is amazing!"

"I told you there was nothing to be worried about!" Dimitri replied, trying not to look too smug with the essential 'I told you so' in that moment.

They didn't have long to thing about it, though, as instead the professor set off with the class. The lecture started with an explanation of the species they were observing. It felt weird, talking about creatures who could understand you whilst they were right there, but it seemed to work, for as soon as the professor had explained the more textbook aspects of the mermaids life, what appeared to be their leader came forth.

From there, they were given a more detailed history of the mermaids that lived within the Great Lake. It was an interesting experience, with information no textbook could have provided. By the time the hour was finished, though, Dimitri was more than glad they'd come for this class, but equally could feel Nerisei getting a little worried over their time down in the water. When the rest of the class turned to head off, Dimitri checked Nerisei was alright before kicking off firmly from the base of the lake, and pulling her up towards the surface with him.

Back on land, the Ravenclaws hurried towards their bags for their towels, the cold weather attacking their skin almost instantly. "Here, warming charm." Dimitri insisted, tapping his wand against the witch's towel before she wrapped it around herself. Doing the same to his own, Dimitri grabbed both of their bags before they turned their attention back towards the castle and the warmth it would provide.
