| Ice-skating was an activity that Ellie was quite familiar with, from a young age her mother took her and her younger brothers ice-skating and her Phil even started taking hockey lessons at the local muggle rec center after a couple of years of the same tradition. Ellie thought it was fun every once in a while so at the beginning of December she took out her skates and went for a lap around the pool. Her mom never minded turning the pool into an icy winterland, even if it was hell for the groundskeepers. After the Halloween Ball ended, she wrote a letter asking for her parents to send her the pair of skates her Aunt Marbella had bought her for the approaching Christmastime.
Her next step was asking Phil and Caelan if they wanted to join her, but both were busy. Caelan had a bunch of assignments to work on and a few books he wanted to read by a fireplace with Stephan, Phil and Corie were going to be engaging in a scavenger hunt. However as if to pacify their sad sister, they both kissed her cheeks and promised to go skating together next weekend. With that in mind, Ellie went out to the Black Lake with a heavy heart as she laced her ice-skates up.
That morning she woke up and dressed warmly, pulling tights on under her thick black and white dress and putting a hairband in her hair after straightening it. She pulled on a pink sweater top to go over her dress to match her pink skates. She deposited her items against a tree and took a deep sigh as she waddled over to the Lake hesitantly, making sure not to fall on her way there.
Once on the ice, she struggled for a moment before finding her feet with a sigh of relief. She slid atop the ice slowly at first, gliding it seemed, she lapped around the lake to find weak spots or spots of danger, and found it rather safe all along the surface. She was glad she wouldn’t have to use her wand that was tucked into her belt to call for help (she had a nifty charm her parents had showed her how to use to cast a flare-like light up into the air.) She did a few spin tricks before landing shakily and pausing her movements totally with wide eyes, and took a deep breath before starting again and going slower and staring at the beauty of the Lake around her, quietly. |

| Jacques had found that he liked the winter in Scotland. It was the only time that he felt something familiar to France, something like comfort that he needed. Having pulled on his black trench coat over his usual attire, and his Slytherin gloves, Jacques had headed out in to the grounds. There were a few groups of people out in the snow, throwing snow at one another, or building snow men.
That wasn't what Jacques wanted to do.
Heading away from the crowds, Jacques moved towards the lake, by a tree he knew to have a large enough cover to not have snow at the base. Sitting down in the snow free patch of Earth, Jacques leaned back against the tree, and let out a slow sigh. This was better than being stuck in the castle for hours on end, of that much he was sure.
It was then, that Jacques noted there was someone on the lake. Ice skating. On. The. Lake. Getting to his feet, Jacques looked around for a professor - there was no way he was getting in to trouble because of some stupid girl again - and made his way to the shore. It was then he realised who was on the ice, the witch he'd met in Diagon Alley. Who he had made jump.
Waiting for her to come closer, Jacques raised his voice, louder than was necessary. "Are you supposed to be doing that?" He asked, hoping to make her jump, maybe lose her balance... ________________________________________________

| The earliest memory Ellie had on the ice was teetering along after her mother, grasping onto her leg at the age of three with her father and brothers waiting on the sidelines. Phil had headlong hit a couple in his speed to lap faster than the others, barely walking but totally in tune with his physical ability. Her father had Caelan on his lap tending to the little wounds on his face from face planting on the ice, and Phil was toddling along just enjoying the cold apparently. Her mother was urging her to go faster, to catch up, always reaching behind her, smiling and encouraging.
Winter was a time for family, a time to enjoy away from schooling and sometimes work too. Mother always took a two week break around Yuletide to make them celebrate an American tradition- Christmas, along with Yule. Yule was spent all dressed spiffy and dancing around aimlessly, dining with Aunt Tess, Uncle Parker, and Aunt Brooke’s families. Everyone was on their best behavior - specifically Phil and Corie. It was something all the adults thought was a sign of true affection the way Phil and Corie fought and competed against each other. Ellie found it to be downright bloodthirsty and power hungry like crazy.
Power hungry, gods above she hated that term and idea. Power was something so fickle and ultimately unattainable. Those who obsessed over it were those without control over the power already given and those who weren’t obsessed with it were lazy. What a fine line one had to mediate on to not be stark raving mad for power, Ellie thought as she slid along the ice in a daze when someone’s voice rung through the air.
Now between all the siblings Ellie had the most grace and tact. Phil was clumsy and just like a male version of their mum and Caelan was quiet and reserved like their father, but when he got too courageous ended up falling all over his words and his feet. Ellie, on the other hand, didn’t tend to fall over herself like her brothers. Of course, when one was deep in thought about human nature they can’t be faulted for forgetting their surroundings and so her reaction.
She spun around in surprise at the sound of the voice, but in her haste to identify the voice ended up moving her left skate in an awkward position that caused her to trip, just enough for her to flail around like a stupid goose before landing on her rump.
“What the fu-” she started ready to let curse words fly like a sailor before noticing the speaker and feeling ire grow in her chest, red hot and angry, “what’re you doing out here? A pretentious jerk like you can’t possibly enjoy the beauty winter hast to offer, and you're a snake; you're cold-blooded. I can't believe you haven't shriveled up and died just by exposing yourself.” She was just saying things now as she scrambled to gather herself, able to get back on her feet but not without a throbbing from her backside that made her wince and grit her teeth, eyes narrowed at the boy from the store.

| The moment he'd spoken, Jacques could see the witch beginning to move, turning towards him. His smirk grew, eyes hungrily waiting for her to lose her balance. And it wasn't long before Jacques got exactly what he wanted. The slip, and the unceremonious landing on the witch's behalf was amusing, and he let out a small chuckle to himself, only a very soft one.
She really was quite a jumpy person, and Jacques knew that he was going to enjoy making the most of that during his stay at the castle.
The moment she exploded - because Jacques couldn't think of a better word for her behaviour - the Slytherin's smirk grew. He didn't care what she called him, this situation was funny, she was on her backside on the ice, because she was scared. Not very Gryffindor like, really.
"Now, now!" Jacques responded to her tirade. "That's not a very nice way to speak to people, is it?" He asked, half raising an eyebrow at the witch in a challenge. "I only asked you a question. I didn't know we were allowed to skate on the lake, I mean... you could fall through the ice and drown, or freeze to death. That would be awful, wouldn't it?" He asked, play acting at being the innocent party in all this. ________________________________________________

| Ellie found that being a pureblood was a fact of her life that her parents never really touched upon. They saw their grandparents on off occasions - more her dad’s parents than her mum’s. Mum’s parents showered them in love and affection, but there was always an elephant in the room when her mum was with them. Ellie could read the tension in the room and so she scanned the room to see empty spaces where picture frames should have been and in the foyer a picture of her grandparents and her mum with another girl, with green eyes and a broad grin clearly older than her mother. It was rude to pry so she didn’t however, she could tell that whatever tension was in the room clearly came from the absence of the older girl.
Now Ellie knew something strange was also going because on her ninth birthday party when Auntie Marbella arrived her mum’s parents left immediately after giving them gifts and kisses. Auntie Marbella gave them a quick cold glare that neither of her siblings caught before turning to them and smiling. It was odd to say the least because their mum’s parents typically stayed later than everyone else. Phil said something about old people needing more rest and Caelan told her not to dawdle on it, but she put tow and two together. However that was neither here nor there.
What was here was her embarrassment and what was there was a right jerk. She crossed her arms over her chest and huffed.
“I speak to people with respect when respect is given, I don’t give respect in conversation to rude creeps lurking by a Lake to purposefully frighten girls,” Ellie put emphasis on the last word, she scoffed unfazed by the idea of falling into the ice since she knew how to take care of herself in that situation, “and wouldn’t that just make your day? Scaring me enough for me to fall into the water and freeze to death, gods you’re so,” her brain was in such an angry huff she couldn’t formulate enough words so instead she scrunched her face up and blew a raspberry at him with narrowed eyes.
“Why are you even out here? What business do you have? I doubt you’ve an appreciation for nature in any form besides something creepy like dark hollowed trees and burnt forests.” She mumbled that last bit before brushing a piece of hair from her face irately. |

| Ellie's outburst didn't help Jacques to control the smirk that was forcing itself on to his features, but he didn't really care at this point. Instead, Jacques allowed it to form. "I don't think creep is the right word. And, I wasn't lurking." Jacques corrected the witch after a moment. "I simply made my way to the edge of the lake, it was you that didn't see me." He pointed out, looking thoroughly pleased with himself.
"Oh no, if you fell in, that would likely ruin my day. Ministry inquiries. I'd have to deal with my father trying to play the 'I'm disappointed in you' card, which never works and is a waste of my time. Not to mention, I'm pretty sure Headmaster Jameson would be annoyed." Jacques explained. "It would be funny though, in the short term." He explained, sitting himself down on the edge of the lake, as if he'd been talking about something less impertinent in that moment.
The raspberry mad Jacques let out a small laugh, though. "You know, for a Brennham, you're manners aren't very good." Jacques told the witch, because her parents were both Purebloods, they surely had taught her that a lady didn't do such things. Or... had he confused her with someone else?
"I was just taking a walk. To get out of the castle. The dungeons aren't very nice at this time of year." Jacques told her, though he didn't tell her that he liked the outdoors because it reminded him of home. No, that was too personal, and Jacques knew that he didn't want to step over that line with this witch. Not ever. She was too rude for that. ________________________________________________

| Now Ellie had quite the temper. It was something her mother and her shared. The only difference was that her mother would snap and then realize she was being rude. Ellie only did that when she felt it was necessary. Now this was not one of those times and she had no problem holding a grudge (something her father did beautifully) against this kid. She didn’t even know his name. She narrowed her eyes at him in disbelief. They had a multitude of classes together, she saw him but wouldn’t dare talk to him in class because she’d been to detention once for something asinine and she didn’t like the feeling of guilt she got when she had to send her parents that letter to tell them that she had been in detention. Not to mention that out of all their kids she was the only one with a detention on her record.
She needed to not fly off the handle but oh Gods was that hard.
“Who even are you? As far as I’m concerned based off of everything I’ve seen you are a creep. You’re a creepy slithery freak.” She shuddered at the idea as she brushed more snow and dirt off her skirt with disdain on her face as she realized she was a tad dirtier than she’d planned on being. Oh how she wished she could use her magic to clean herself; that was wishful thinking however. “Well I see you now and there’s definitely not much to look at,” she muttered irately as she started to move around a bit on her skates to make sure she wasn’t just causing too much pressure. She did a small circle away from her fall before replying to him.
She felt herself go stock still at his comment about her manners. Gods he wouldn’t last a day at the park with the rest of her family if he thought she was untamed. She wanted to march off the ice and slap him hard enough to send him flying that was for darned sure! She was almost seeing red. The only thing holding her back was her meek conscious reminding her of the repercussions of such actions. She closed her eyes and circled back towards him.
“My manners are none of your business.” Ellie informed him with a rigid back and balled fists. “I give respect where I see it’s given and to those on equal standing to me and all you’ve given me is a pompous haughty attitude. Thanks for that, it makes for real phenomenal company.” She made sure to inject as much sarcasm as possible into that statement as possible and a small sneer too and look of disinterest for good measure.
“I doubt the dungeons are very nice at any time of the year,” she remarked as she contemplated what to do next- leave the unpleasant company that was currently inhaling the same air as her or go straight to ignoring him? Both were tempting paths as was the third unthinkable one of hexing him into the next century with no care or hesitation. |

| The question of who he was had never been one Jacques had been accustomed to in France. Everyone knew the Clements in France, in Paris it was near on impossible to go anywhere without being recognised. So when he had been asked in England, it annoyed him, very much.
"My name is Jacques Clement." He told the witch, his tone defiant because she was still being rude with him. Did people not know how to talk to people who were above them? The girl before him most certainly didn't that was for sure.
After that, the witch didn't say anything of interest. Which was annoying, because in the antiques shop, she had seemed like she was good enough company, but it seemed he had been wrong in that one. Wracking his brains for a moment, Jacques looked across the grounds where groups of people were out having snow ball fights, or making snowmen together. Then his eyes moved back to the witch who was on her own, but for himself.
"You know, if you hadn't been so rude. We could have played together. I skate too." Jacques explained, though he didn't have his ice skates with him today. "But, I guess you like to throw out insults more than making friends." Jacques finished, giving a small shrug and then turning on his heel. He had better things to be doing than wasting his time on an idiot Gryffindor.
Like his Runes essay.
Or something. ________________________________________________
