It was on the spring of 1993 when life changed for Marianne Caro and Kim Ji Hoon, two university students who were on an 'on-the-job' training trip to Brazil. As aspiring naturalists assigned as partners, the two found themselves incredibly immersed in their work, though it wasn't just the magical creatures that made them ignore the rest of the world. In each other, they found their match—Ji Hoon was going against the family tradition of becoming artists, whilst Marianne chose a career in naturalism despite her parents' wishes for her to find a good man and settle down. Due to the immediacy of separation once the trip was over, the pair had an intense, passionate romance, one that would be forever incomparable to the future romances they were to have with other partners.
It was only back in Paris when Marianne would realise that she was pregnant. Though she considers aborting the baby and keeping it a secret at first, her best friend Colette eventually wrote to Ji Hoon, and Ji Hoon flew to Paris without a second thought. Under any other circumstances, it could have been a good match for a marriage. Both their families can trace their lineage in nobility, and both families highly valued art above all. Ji Hoon, however, was already promised by his grandfather to his best friend's granddaughter, and to dishonour the promise would mean being disowned from the family. Understanding Ji Hoon's position very well, Marianne refused to marry him, claiming that she didn't love him enough. And yet when Ji Hoon left to go back to South Korea, Marianne cried herself to sleep for a long time.
Though Marianne was not disowned by her family, her reputation suffered, and eventually she decided to move to Glasgow. In Glasgow, she continued her career in naturalism and raised Sabrina, named after an Audrey Hepburn character, on her own. Even at a young age, Sabrina was a bright child who showed a lot of talent and potential in various artistic fields. She trained vocally with a choir, learned to dance for school performances, and participated in children's theatre. She also showed a gift for languages, writing and poetry, and her creativity showed in the way she tried to make each playtime a unique experience for her and her friends. Though there were instances when she showed talent in witchcraft, Marianne raised her like a muggle until the letter from Hogwarts arrived.
The Sorting Hat took a while to decide which House to put Sabrina in. Though Sabrina was witty, creative and naturally curious about everything, there was a certain ambitiousness in her that the Sorting Hat felt could develop more in Slytherin. In the end, Sabrina was Sorted into Slytherin, and there she made numerous friends. Aside from being in the choir and getting mostly O's and E's in her classes, Sabrina's Veela charm worked on quite a number of boys in Hogwarts, and though she was interested in some of them, she never took advantage of the Veela charm to date anyone. Perhaps due to the fear that they were only attracted to her because of the Veela charm, Sabrina never had a serious relationship with anyone. The closest person she had to falling in love with was Raffaele Cassan, the Gryffindor Prefect during her years as a Slytherin prefect, and she pushed him away when things started to get serious.
After Hogwarts, from which she graduated with top marks, Sabrina studied literature and art history in the French wizarding university whilst working as a part-time model. Her career was a success—designers fought over her and practically begged for her to walk for them on fashion shows, and even some film directors asked if she would like to star in their hipster indie films. For a time, it was exhilarating. Sabrina enjoyed fame and success, and she loved the luxurious lifestyle that came along with it. However, as the years went by, all the glitter and gold lost their glimmer in Sabrina's eyes, and after not seeing Alexander (her Hogwarts days best friend) for a long time, she decided to contact him. Alexander, who knew her weaknesses, suggested that she try taking a hiatus from modelling and doing a job that would challenge her. Hogwarts, he heard, was recruiting new professors, and if he remembered correctly, Sabrina was the best student in their Charms classes.
Sabrina soon found herself visiting Headmaster Jameson at Hogwarts and asking if there were any vacancies. Being a professor was the last thing her younger self thought she'd be doing, but she was the last person to back out from a challenge—especially if it's from someone she could never seem to completely impress or win over. The Caro's are an Italian-French family from Paris. Though they were never considered to be a part of high society, they value philosophy, education and the arts, and are known to produce artists, especially architects and theatre actors. When Paolo Caro studied Literature in Paris, he met university student Clemence de Rochechouart, a woman of nobility who had an interest in both literature and visual arts. Paolo and Clemence's marriage formed an allegiance between the de Rochechouart's and the Caro's, an allegiance which greatly benefited both families as they were both half-blood wizarding families who wouldn't have been able to marry into pureblood families despite their social status. Currently, though some Caro's remain in Sicily, most have moved to Paris or Rome to to make their mark as artists in the wizarding world.
The Kim's are a wealthy Korean clan from Daegu. Though they are known to be a pureblood family, the claim remains questionable due to the missing records from the 1930s. Still, the Kim's prefer to keep their pureblood reputation in order to appear formidable to rival families (who are of the mindset that purebloods were actually equal to muggleborns and half-bloods), and are therefore very selective when it comes to who gets to marry into their family. The Kim's own textile companies and museums both in the wizarding and the muggle world.
