James' final lesson of the year had been more successful than he had thought it might be, a number of students had submitted - and those who hadn't had been handed a Troll for their lack of effort. Hopefully earning them a good ear bashing from their parents which would mean they at least made an effort to attend his class in future.

With the start of term coming in to being, James was always a little bit less agitated than normal - it wouldn't last, but for now he was not as grumpy as usual.

Today's lesson he had not bothered to write on the board, instead the professor sat at his desk waiting for the room to fill with his students for the day. How many would bother to attend, James didn't know, but for those who didn't, the rest of the year was going to be tough on them.

As the bell rang off in the distance, James prepared himself for the rabble that was about to head his way.

Elleon walked to the potions class, talking animatedly with Jelena. The summer holidays had been perfect. He was back where he belonged in the Deaf community. There were no weird stares from hearing people who saw him talking with his hands, no stupid questions they asked him about being Deaf and most of all, no difficulty communicating. He'd caught up with his friends, spending precious time with them before he had to go back to classes.

Seeing his family also brought great joy to him and there were movie nights, board game nights, dancing nights, all the activities they used to do together before he attended Hogwarts. But now he was back in school, back in an environment where only his sister could communicate and understand him. He'd tried conversing with the other students, sometimes with Jelena and other times without. It wasn't completely bad but it wasn't fulfilling either. It was basically too much hard work.

They entered the class. Potions was one of his favourite classes mostly because it didn't require a lot of talking. But the professor could use and attitude adjustment. He took his seat and continued his conversation with Jelena while waiting for the class to start.

Alberi didn't like, nor did he dislike Potions. To a point, it reminded him of Muggle Chemistry, except that Chemistry was much more complicated than Potions or at least that's what he had gathered from his stay at Hogwarts. While in Chemistry they learnt every single chemical that has ever been made, along with it's compounds and even a bit of Maths. Here, it was really just mixing up different given ingredients that are in their books and from that, they make a potion. Honestly, he would have hoped for something more interesting at this school than a lesson in cooking. He was sure that there was more to Potions than that but, sadly, the teacher that he is with would never feel in initiative to actually teach them something more then the potions themself. Perhaps, had they concentrated more on why said potions are one way or another, this lesson would be more interesting.

Than again, one thing he had learnt about wizards from his years staying here is that they don't want to learn more than they should, or think they should. And that should contained doing spells, a little fighting and encyclopedic knowledge of every potion without an explanation on why.

Not very different from the Muggle world, now that he thought over it.

As he walked down to the dungeons, he couldn't help but feel a bit discontent. He was sure that, had the hat not decided that he needed to be in Gryffindor to 'loosen up' or something such, he'd have been in Slytherin. He would have been walking down these corridors, instead of tiring himself with the stairs (not even mentioning that the also had to move!) Sighing a bit to himself, he continued his way towards to room, allowing himself to get deep in thought, the darkness from the dungeons helping him get such quicker.

Entering, he noticed that the teacher was inside. 'Well, one difference from the last time.' he thought sarcastically to himself before greeting the professor and finding a place to sit down, as far from the door as possible. Happily, hardly anyone was in and he had a rather vast choice. He looked up to the board to see any sign of what they would be studying but found nothing such. 'Maybe he was too lazy to write it down.' the boy thought, resisting the urge to mutter something, before he took out a book and began to read it. He still was planning on reading as much as possible, after all.

Brooklyn let out a groan when she entered the class. A younger year Hufflepuff and an older year Gryffindor. She hated that there was no Slytherins to help her in her time of need. Yes she knew some people from her house and she usually tried to associate with kids in her house because well she was like that and was proud of it. The dark haired girl took a random seat and waited for this Professor to start, she had heard only good things about this Professor but this was her first time in this class because she was too lazy to attend the class before.

Brooklyn was a difficult girl to deal with which is why she felt bad for the boy that ended up with her. They would have to put up with all her flaws and that was something she looked forward to seeing. Brooklyn loved watching people try to understand her but the truth was, that no one really could and it was how it was meant and how it was going to be.

Potions. Now this was one class Nico could get to like. He hadn't really done much practice at home, although he had seen people doing it before and assisted in the preparation; he was certain this was one subject he could do well in. Perhaps he might even one day become a great potions master and create all sorts of new and amazing potions for the world! It would, at the very least, set him apart from his siblings, in any case.

Stepping into the classroom, he looked around, making his way to the front. "Hello Professor," he greeted politely. As he walked, he couldn't help but notice that there was a deaf kid up ahead. How he knew? Well, for one, it was obvious he and the person he was with were using sign language, and it was unlikely they had learnt to be fluent in it just to converse without speech. It was also obvious that the female could hear, with the way she glanced around when there were noises like doors opening and whatnot, which meant she was most likely an interpreter - leaving one possibility. The male boy was the one that was deaf.

Fascinating.

He had never met anyone deaf before, and momentarily debated it before going over to them. "Hello," he greeted, looking directly at the female with a smile, before turning to the male and waving at him. Would he be able to read lips? Nico wasn't sure, but he didn't mind taking a risk. "Can I join you guys?" he asked, again directing the question to the female, although he looked at the deaf kid.

Brooklyn was in the middle of just doing nothing, well that was a lie when she got really bored of just waiting for this damn class to start, she took out her nail filer and began filing her nails to make them sharp. She heard someone chipper come in and she had to stop herself from being disgusted by it. When she heard him stop by her, she looked up from what she was doing and looked at the young boy. She had to hold back and eye roll.

"Go right ahead kid" she said. She couldn't really stop anyone from sitting, it wasn't like she could, this was a classroom and she was going to end up with a partner sooner or later so she might as well end up doing it now because someone was assigned to her and she didn't like them because they probably stunk or something. But she could tell that this kid was clean because she could smell him from where she was sitting. The Slytherin waited for the young kid to sit next to her.

Humphrey walked into potions on his own, as he usually was. Although Humphrey didn't try to avoid people, the truth was he didn't have many friends. There were a few nice people he had met and talked with, but whenever they started getting to know him for some reason most didn't want to stick around. Maybe they were afraid he was too weird and if they associated with him it would reflect poorly back on themselves. Whatever the reason was, it saddened Humphrey a little. The twelve year old did a good job of hiding it by working hard in classes, painting, writing, or reading; but, the boy was hurting on the inside. His only true friend, his little sister, was back at home. Reading letters from her and writing them could never compare to the gesture of a hug, or hearing the infectious laughter, or even just seeing her smile. Blinking his eyes rapidly to make sure none of the slight moisture in his eyes would be noticed, he looked at his surroundings and picked an empty seat.

As he got out his things and ordered them neatly, he noticed Brooklyn and looked over briefly at her. The guy she was sitting with seemed rather cheerful, and it didn't take much imagination to figure that it would probably be grating on her nerves. There was also another Gryffindor, and a Hufflepuff he'd seen before. His eyes moved forward, but to his surprise there was nothing written for them. Getting comfortable in his chair, he simply began doodling on a spare piece of parchment while he waited for the professor to start the lesson.

[[OOC: Italics are sign language, non-italic dialogue is interpreted]]

"Do you remember that time Jason thought it was a snake in the grass and jumped into the lake when it was really just his dog?" Jelena said, giggling with mirth.

Elleon laughed heartily
[Silent laughter while signing ROFL] at the memory of the summer spent with his friends. "Oh Merlin! Yes! That was so funny! And you were such a prankster to tell him it was a snake!"

"But it was worth it to see his reaction!"

Elleon grinned, already missing home and his friends. Back home, he didn't have to worry about people not understanding him, he didn't have to always keep a pen and paper at hand to write what he wanted to say. He could just be himself, be accepted, be part of a vibrant community.

Before Elleon could respond, Jelena was pointing at someone and interpreting. He turned his attention away from her towards the Gryffindor boy and smiled, returning the wave. He caught what the boy said though he looked to Jelena for the interpretation just to make sure, he'd read the boy's lips correctly.

"Yea, sure!" Jelana answered, signing as she spoke to keep Elleon in the loop.

"Go ahead," Elleon agreed. "You can talk directly to me if you want to, you know," he added, Jelena interpreting for him. He'd caught the inclusive look the boy had given him but too often, hearing people talked to Deaf people in the third person, which was very very rude. And many times, they would look at the interpreter instead of the Deaf person. Common mistake but very annoying.

"I'm Elleon," he introduced himself with a smile. "And this is Jelena, my sister and interpreter."

If it were possible to send their house elves or even household help to attend Potions for her, Mina would have done that for the rest of her Hogwarts years. It was utterly unnecessary to learn something other people could do for her, and besides, if they could not do it, there was always money to be spent.

Still, Potions was a core class, and she feared not graduating more than she disliked having to touch horned slugs. More often than not, she ended up finishing last in Potions, mostly because she wanted to make sure that the ingredients did not give her disgusting skin diseases. Why people would want to handle icky ingredients for a living, she would never know.

Mina entered the classroom to see that Professor Balan had not written down their topic on the board. That was most unusual—more often than not, he left instructions on the board, and there was even that one final exam when he let the board do the talking for him. She ignored him as she looked for an empty seat, knowing that he was not the sort of person to greet his students. It was rather rude, really, but that was not her problem. If people wanted to remain unsophisticated, that was their loss.

Smoothing her robe as she took a seat, Mina restrained herself from heaving a sigh. Class would be over soon, and time would fly by quicker if she did not pay too much attention to it. As she waited for Professor Balan to start the class, she entertained herself by writing on her journal.

She had a morbid desire to prove Professor Balan wrong about her.

There was no way she could prove to him that her brother had stolen her potion. She would've stolen it back from him, but Luke took care of it well, and besides, she was quite sure that he had destroyed it not long after showing her what had caused her to be almost held back.

To lose her ballet privileges, and her parents' trust in her.

Dragging herself into the classroom, she held her head high. 'Good morning, professor,' she coolly greeted the man who had given her a Troll. No, it wouldn't do at all to show him that she was upset, that she was in any way hurt by his lack of belief in her. As if inspired by his general disinterest in his students, she flashed him a cold smile before heading for a station near the front of the room.

Luke's mistake was that he had let her know. What he failed to realise was that knowing was half the battle won, and now that Lyra knew who not to trust, she took every necessary precaution so that her brother wouldn't be able to break her.

He must've thought he had broken her back. Blinded by his ego, he failed to see that it was just her wings growing. And she will be unstoppable.
