At the speed of light (Bryant) Empty

When he was not doing his classwork, Joshua found himself spending most of his time at the Quidditch pitch. He enjoyed using the wide-open space to run and work out. He figured that there was probably a room dedicated to working out, but there was just something about being so physical in the outdoors, the sun beating down onto him. There was some relief in the salted sweat that flowed along the indents of his ripped body.

Of all different forms of excersize, running was by far his favourite. He felt as though he could not be touched as his sneakers hit the grass for not even a second at a time. It felt as though he was floating through the air at the speed of light. The only other thing that was even close to this sensation was quidditch. Quidditch was great, but it lacked the feeling of mystery that came with running.

With quidditch, one knew where the flying sensation came from. He knew that his speed came from his broom. When he ran, everything he felt was coming purely from his own body. It was a unique experience.

He had been running for what seemed like minutes, though it had probably been around an hour. He always seemed to lose track of time. Once he began to slow down, he noticed another body in the pitch.

"Do you need the pitch?" he yelled to the figure.

Bryant had realized pretty quickly upon arriving at Hogwarts that he would most likely be on his own when it came to staying in shape for baseball. When he was at home, so many of his friends were either on the team with him or played a similar sport that finding someone to exercise with was easy. He had actually had a standing appointment with one of his neighbors. Every Thursday, they would meet up an hour after school and go running for a while. They never talked or interacted outside of that- heck! Bryant didn’t even know his name-but they were friends for that one day every week.

Here, however, most people were obsessed with Quidditch. Not that there was anything wrong with that! Bryant had watched several games, and it looked like great fun, but it wasn’t the same. It seemed like the teams were more likely to work out with each other at their team practices than agree to meet up and run or play catch with a firstie that they didn’t know. And Bryant didn’t really know anyone else well enough to know if they liked keeping fit, so he was on his own for the moment.

It was probably the reminiscing on his neighbor that gave Bryant the urge to go running again. He didn’t know if there was a specific place to exercise, but the Quidditch pitch was flat, large, and open. All you needed for a nice run. Bryant had changed into the correct clothing and quickly headed to the pitch. When he got there, however, he noticed that there was already someone running. Bryant hesitated, but began to stretch anyways. The pitch was definitely big enough for the two of them.

When the taller teen started slowing down and coming closer, Bryant inwardly panicked for a second. Maybe the pitch wasn’t big enough for the two of them? But he relaxed after the shouted question. Oh, he was just being friendly. Bryant stood up, carefully brushed himself off, and smiled. He jogged over to the other boy and shook his head slightly.

“I don’t need it. I just decided to go on a run and figured this would be the best spot. I guess you had the same idea. Don’t let me keep you from doing your own thing,” Bryant stuck out his hand. “My name is Bryant Anderson. It’s nice to meet you.”

It was not like Joshua had expected some sort of a turf war,but he had expected some sort of "This is my running time, why are you here?" situation to go down. Usually, the people who came to the pitch while Joshua was doing his daily workout would ask him to leave. Exercise was usually a one man sport around these parts. The boy who had come to the pitch was younger looking, most likely a first year. He introduced himself as Bryant Anderson.

When the firstie got closer, Joshua extended a nicely toned arm.

"Good to meet you, Bryant Anderson. The name's Joshua Abbott." He decided that he would test this boy's athletic ability. He wanted to see what he could do. If he could keep up, he may make a good running buddy. If not, well at least he tried.

After getting a bit of a head start, Joshua called to the boy.
"Let's go for a run, Anderson! That is, if you can keep up."

Bryant let out a small sigh of relief and smiled. This guy seemed nice and unlikely to beat him to a pulp if he got angry. Even if he was working out, and obviously fit.

“Nice to meet you, Joshua!” Bryant could tell from the way that he had to crane his neck back that Joshua was older by at least a few years. He was a freaking GIANT! But it was fine… He wasn’t slightly jealous of that or anything… He'd hopefully become less of a squirt as he got older.

Bryant broke out of his envy musings when Joshua abruptly moved away a bit. He gave Joshua a bemused look until the challenge was sent back and Joshua started running. Bryant immediately grinned and began jogging to catch up to the boy.

“No fair! That's cheating!” This was going to be fun! And who knew? Maybe this could become a regular thing, like Thursday Boy. When he caught up to Joshua and worked on matching his pace, Bryant gained a mischievous smile. If this was supposed to be a test of his skills, maybe he should bump up the difficulty? Bryant increased his speed slightly and then turned his head to start talking. Running and speaking at the same time could get hard to maintain over long distances.

“So… How old are you? And do you go by Josh or Joshua? And how would you feel about being called the Quidditch Pitch Boy?” Bryant asked that last question just to hopefully throw Joshua off his game for a second. All’s fair in love and war, right?

Joshua was not travelling at his normal speed. He had just finished his daily workout and now here he was challenging a kid to a race. He had figured that the child would not be able to keep up, seeing as he was easily a foot shorter than Joshua. However, Bryant seemed surprisingly able to run at a similar pace.

“So… How old are you? And do you go by Josh or Joshua? And how would you feel about being called the Quidditch Pitch Boy?”

Joshua would have liked to tell the kid where he could shove his questions, but he figured that that would not be good sportsmanship. Speaking and running at the same time was a rather difficult task for any figure of less skill than the Hufflepuff. Seeing as he was talented and awesome, he took this challenge with a grin.

"16," he responded. "Josh is fine in on the field, but in proper settings the name is Joshua." he managed to sprint a few feet further, trying to keep his distance from the boy. To Joshua, names were power. Being a muggleborn, the boy needed all of the power her could get. He had never been particularly fond of nicknames unless they were used in friendly settings. Nicknames chipped away at the respectability of the original name.

After spending a few moments in total concentration, he added, "Quidditch Pitch Boy is what you can call me if you would like me to lift you up by your scrawny little ass and throw you as far as I can." As he said this, he couldn't help but laugh. Someone as physically perfect as Joshua was quite menacing when giving threats like that. His eyes held the truth though. They kept their friendliness within them, whispering throughout the blue that the threat was nothing but an empty joke.

Though who knew? Perhaps Bryant would become annoying enough to deserve a real threat.
