Ancient Runes Lesson Three [All Years] Empty
PostSubject: Ancient Runes Lesson Three [All Years]   Ancient Runes Lesson Three [All Years] EmptyFri Nov 03, 2017 4:12 pm

The sun had not yet risen over the school's ancient grounds; most sensible students and staff still lay in bed and only flickering torchlight illuminated the darkness. The only sound to be heard was the occasional frenzied twitter of birds and the soft crunch of frost underfoot. While most had slept through the night Andrei Kessler had not slept a wink.

Three weeks prior he had distributed permission slips to all his students. Those who had attended his second lesson hopefully picked up the slips in person and those who did not had hopefully received them by owl. Normally, a class such as his did not require such formalities. However, there would be nothing normal about today's class in the slightest as not only would it bring together students of all years, but would also necessitate traveling beyond the school's boundaries.

Yes, a field trip or, as Andrei preferred to call it, an expedition.

Pulling his tattered traveling cloak around him tightly, the runes professor came to a halt a few steps from the forbidden forest. Stuck into the frosted ground stood a long shovel whose gnarled wooden handle seemed just about ready to snap in two. The unassuming excavation implement would serve as the first step in this third lesson.

With any luck, he wouldn't be left waiting in the lightless morning for very long.

[I'll be starting this lesson in roughly a week, so if you'd like to participate please post here before then. Do know that once we start it will require a bit of back and forth so keep an eye out!]

Sasha did pick up the slip where you needed parents permission so you can go on this field trip. For her, it wasn't so easy to get her parents give their signature down there. She somehow managed it and her mother didn't even look what it was even. She just wanted Sasha to stop annoying her. So yeah she actually might even not be allowed to go but her parents didn't care much what she did do.

Sasha walked where they were supposed to meet today. It was near a forbidden forest or so. She had no idea what professor planned this time. She has never really been good in ancient runes but she at least tries to understand this. Even if it takes a lot effort from her. She has never been someone who gives up easily.

"Hello, professor," she said with a small smile on her face. She was bit of excited about this so called field trip for sure. She hasn't been on very much of them. She wasn't sure if she was supposed to give slip to professor now or not.

When the information of a school trip had been given, Dimitri had been rather interested in the lesson. He'd been something of a background figure, truth be told, in the previous classes of the year, but with an adventure on the horizon, Dimitri wasn't about to let that one go without some kind of interaction.

Getting up earlier than normal, Dimitri picked up his bag that he'd packed the night before after changing in to his school robes, and headed down from the Ravenclaw Tower to the Grounds. His permission slip was in his bag -- something easily obtainable because his parents never tried to stop him from doing the things he wanted to -- as he hadn't been sure whether he was supposed to send it back to the professor, or simply turn up with it.

Shortly before the meet time, Dimitri had arrived at the meet point, finding the professor and a Hufflepuff witch had already beaten him to the location. "Morning, professor!" Dimitri greeted warmly, before sending a friendly smile to the other witch. He wasn't sure of her name, but he was polite enough to give a soft 'hello' in her direction.

An outing. Tess had been awfully curious at the fact that they would be going out of the classroom for this particular class. When she had gone home, she had actually asked Mycroft to sign in place of their father; after all, any outing that involved her going somewhere outside the castle made her father a bit wary. It was not really for her safety per say, but in reality, what it meant. To have a young girl such as her unsupervised was a ghastly thought. In turn, her brother merely smiled at her, signed, and kissed her head. She had to admit that she was a bit taken aback by his gesture but thought nothing of it.

The night before, she had packet everything she would need in a fashionable satchel.  While she wasn't sure what would be needed, she made her to enchant her bag to not miss a thing. So far she had put: a spare jumper, a change of clothing, an umbrella, a blanket, a pillow, another scarf, a first aid kit, some salves and herbs, some canteens with water, a change of shoes, some snacks, a hat, and an enchanted portkey just in case she got lost. Was this particularly neurotic of her? Yes, but Myce had made a comment for her to be particularly careful and to overpack.  She had no qualms about this as the bag did not get heavy.

So in the morning, her typical uniform was put on, along with her peacoat, a scarf, a small hat, mittens, and boots. As she reached the edge of the Forbidden Forest, she greeted the professor and smiled shyly at the two other students there. So far she only knew Dimitri by families, but nothing more. At least it was nice to see a friendly face and wondered if Elenore would come along.

Excited that class was going to be held outside instead of the usual Ancient Runes Classroom, Sophie headed to the location with a pep in her step. The permission slip hadn't been a problem at all; her grandparents knowing how much she loved the outdoors and the thrill of the unknown. Whatever was going to be happening today, Sophie felt that it was going to be good.

A small group had already gathered at the edge of the Forbidden Forest and Sophie hurried her pace. She'd been into the Forest before and had seen nothing in there that could possibly relate to Ancient Runes. Perhaps they wouldn't be going into the Forest? The Professor could come up with anything. Whatever it was, Sophie was ready.

She greeted the professor and noticed the shovel thing almost immediately. It was a strange object that looked as if it would fall apart with the slightest touch. What in the world would they be doing with that?

As soon as Professor Kessler mentioned “Field trip”, Cammie gave the slip to her mother, to give her permission but, Cammie’s mother,Catherine was not really sure if she should send her daughter to the school trip.

Catherine remembered that the last time Cammie went on a trip at school back in New York, Cammie was in an Amazon bookstore while the others students were in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The teachers noticed the young witch’s absence and got worried. They called her mother and, Catherine got worried for her daughter. Catherine quickly left her meeting with an important client and rushed to find her daughter.

Thankfully, Catherine found her precious daughter in the Amazon bookstore buying a book. She remembered clearly that her daughter was just simply buying a book because Catherine ignored the young witch’s wishes to buy her favourite book.

As soon as Cammie noticed her mother’s presence, Cammie knew that she is in trouble. Without causing a scene, she quickly follow her mother into her car and went home.

Cammie finally arrived in the house, and Cammie got a severe scolding from her mom.
Cammie begged her mom to allow her to attend the school trip as it was her first school trip with Hogwarts.

After the numerous amounts of begging, pleading, convincing and puppy eyes, Catherine allowed Cammie to go to the field trip. As soon as she signed it, she gave the slip to Cammie.

Cammie journeyed to the forbidden forest for the Ancient Runes Class and with a smile on her face she greeted her professor, “Good morning Professor Kessler. In case i forget, here is my slip.” Cammie walked back to where the students are gathering, and she just only noticed a shovel was there.

“It must be for today’s lesson” Cammie mumbled to herself. She waited for the other students to arrive and Cammie was curious as today’s lesson will be quite interesting.

Ancient Runes Lesson Three [All Years] Empty

When Roxy received her permission slip from the Ancient Runes Professor, she had blinked at it before she sent it off to her father to have it signed, a day later it was returned with the Förstner Lord's signature in his usual slanted but neat writing along with a note that stated for her to have fun and not do anything that he wouldn't do. Which equated to ruining the Förstner family name.

Sighing as she clipped on her travelling cloak, Roxanne made sure that she was bundled up warmly, her feet snugly fit into the fur covered boots she had been gifted by a friend for Christmas before she made her way out of the tower and out of the castle towards the Forbidden Forest. She wasn't sure what they were going to do but she had a feeling this would be just as an equally fun lesson as the previous ones had been.

Smiling in greeting, Roxanne dipped her head. "Good morning Professor." Her voice was low as to not startle any creatures that might be scattered around them. You never know what sort of animals roamed at this time of day.

Ancient Runes, while not exactly his best subject, was a subject that he certainly enjoyed; it let his mind work and gave him the chance to learn something that he hadn't learnt while he had been in Italy or at Durmstrang. When he received his permission slip, Alexei signed it himself, considering he was over the age of seventeen though his brother would've been more than willing to sign it for him probably.

Slipping on his usual jacket, Alexei made sure that he had his book bag and wand with him before he made his way out of the Dungeons and into the Forbidden Forest. It was still early hours so the only things that one could hear are the chirpings of birds and occasional howl of some sort of animal. Not really being a fan of the Dark Forest, Alexei made sure to keep a little bit further away from the forest.

It didn't take long for the male to approach the Ancient Runes Professor and the few students scattered about; he recognized some of them while others certainly were new faces. Nodding his head in greeting, Alexei stood further back from his fellow students. He wasn't there to socialize and until he got a cup of coffee at breakfast he would make sure to stay as far away from his fellow students as possible.

Ancient Runes Lesson Three [All Years] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Ancient Runes Lesson Three [All Years]   Ancient Runes Lesson Three [All Years] EmptyWed Nov 08, 2017 5:11 am

While Mercy generally wasn't a fan of the subject, she had to admit the Ancient Runes professor knew how to pique her interest. Runes themselves made very little sense to Mercy; however, Professor Kessler did well enough making his lessons interactive, and archeological expeditions (especially those involving potential ancient curses and unforseen dangers) were right up her alley.

As such, she couldn't wait to go on this field trip. She'd gotten her permission slip signed as soon as she received it, and her parents simply couldn't say no when they saw how excited she was about a class. School had never been her favourite thing, and Ancient Runes in particular was not a class they would expect her to be passionate about. In truth, she wasn't. But any excuse to get out of the classroom, and out adventuring in the great wide world, was enough for her.

Mercy overslept slightly that morning, but the anticipation quickly chased away the last vestiges of sleep from her brain. She stuffed all of the essentials--her permission slip, some snacks, a water bottle, her wand, and her phone--into her backpack, and threw it over her shoulder, before bounding down the stairs two at a time, and dashing across the grounds to meet the large group gathered at the edge of the Forbidden Forest. She had yet to venture in there--it was on her list of things to do, she just hadn't gotten around to it yet. She still had six more years to explore, so there was no rush.

Since she'd arrived a little later than most people, she found herself standing on the outskirts of the group, and she couldn't see much around the older students. She didn't mind much, as it seemed like nothing was really happening yet. When she thought there was something to see, she would weave her way toward the front of the group, but for now, she was content to wait near the back.

Ancient Runes Lesson Three [All Years] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Ancient Runes Lesson Three [All Years]   Ancient Runes Lesson Three [All Years] EmptyFri Nov 10, 2017 5:27 am

The pleasantries—as they always did—came first. A few good mornings here, some friendly nods there, and in no time at all a good-sized group stood at the foot of the forbidden forest. Announcing a field trip really did wonders for attendance, go figure. Interestingly though, it seemed that only one student out of the bunch had an ounce of foresight and gave him her permission slip, not that he’d blame the rest in the slightest—it was still early.

“Thank you very much, Miss. Smith,” Andrei honestly never knew how to go about tackling those hyphenated names and went out on a limb with the Hufflepuff’s name before raising his voice so the whole class could hear. “Good morning, everyone; I hope you slept well because we have quite a day ahead of us. Before we begin can I please get everyone’s permission slips?”

Hopefully, the students had gathered their wits enough to go about this process in some semblance of an orderly manner—death via mob of teenagers would be less than optimal at this point in his life.  Regardless, he’d thank each student who presented him with the required form with a soft murmur. Then, once all the students had turned in their respective slips, the runes professor thumbed through the documents quickly before folding them into one the many bottomless pockets in his cloak.

“Very good, very good,” he affirmed with a nod to no one in particular. “Now, for those of you who do not know, this is a portkey.”

He gestured to the shovel as he spoke.

“It will serve as the doorway to our final lesson. If this is your first time traveling by portkey I will admit it isn’t the most pleasant thing in the world, but it is pretty straightforward: grab the shovel wherever you can, hold on tight, and no matter what you do don’t let go until you feel solid ground beneath your feet.”

Thankfully it seemed that everyone would have just enough room to hold onto the shovel’s handle.

“So, everyone gather round and grab on, next stop Egypt.”

Waiting until everyone had taken up a position around the portkey, Andrei stepped forward, glanced around at what was hopefully a circle of students to make sure everyone had a firm grip, and placed his hand atop the pommel of the shovel. The golden wedding ring on his right hand that served as the portkey’s catalyst burned slightly, but the pain soon gave way to nausea as the world began to seemingly spin out of control. He never much liked portkeys or apparating for this very reason, it felt like someone was turning your stomach inside out.

Probably less than a minute passed before the spinning stopped and the former coolness of the school grounds was replaced by a dry heat. The shovel, which had been stuck into the freezing ground before, now found itself stuck hilt deep in sand. Taking a breath, Andrei couldn’t help but smile ever so slightly: they’d made it safely.

“Class, let me be the first to welcome you all to the valley of kings,” he announced with more than a hint of showmanship and a grand flourish of his hands. “Today we’ll be visiting one of the lesser known tombs of the god-king Hankeman and his wife Nefret.”

These two rulers were of particular interest to the wizarding community because they were one of Egypt’s first magical leaders from the new kingdom era. And, more importantly, their burial place had been shrouded from Muggles, which would allow the class to explore with impunity. In fact, the portkey had transported the class just a few hundred meters from the tomb’s entrance and well within the protective veil—the runes professor wasn’t about to let his class roam free through Egypt, that would be asking for trouble.

“While all the more dangerous traps have been neutralized you will find some more innocuous ones here and there,” the older man started making his way towards the entrance hopefully with his class in tow. “I’ve arranged with the dig team to give us free reign for the next couple hours to explore as we see fit. The artifacts and hieroglyphs here are protected by certain charms that prevent their removal or destruction, but that does not mean you should go touching them. Please be respectful.”

Looking more like a giant fissure in the ground than anything else and marked by yellow tape, the entrance came into view. The stairs that led downwards opened up into a large main chamber adorned with gold as far as the eye could see with walls covered in writing and lit by smokeless torches of eternal flame. Branching off from the main chamber was a maze of other chambers filled with treasure beyond one’s wildest imagining—this was the find of a lifetime and Andrei had to cash in more than a few favors to get access.

“Today’s class will focus on transcription,” Andrei paused at the entrance of the tomb. “I’d like you to sift through the runic script you find here, identify the symbols you know, and copy them down. Just be aware that what I suppose we’d call ‘font’ nowadays might make familiar symbols look foreign so keep a sharp eye and open mind, but most of all have fun, it’s a field trip. If you have questions I’ll be up here, best of luck.”

Stepping away from the entrance, Andrei made room for the class to descend into the depths of the royal tomb. What they’d find below? Well, that would be up to them and how adventurous each student was. Of course, they wouldn’t find anything remotely life-threatening as Andrei had combed over the tomb himself, but he had failed to mention the presence of more than a few ghosts and rune-powered illusions.

Oh well; in the meantime, he’d see to getting breakfast ready.
