Magical artifacts.

You'd be surprised how closely linked magical artifacts and the study of magical artifacts are. In Andrei's professional opinion such artifacts got a bad rap due to curses some carried. However, from what he could tell the existence of such cursed items was vastly overstated. Sure, every now and then a particularly nasty piece of work would crop that deformed and killed its user, but not nearly as often as the newspapers would have one think. On the contrary, the use of magical artifacts could be quite useful for all manner of things both magical and non-magical that he hoped to teach his more advanced class about.

To this end on each desk sat a pair of glasses. From a distance, they looked totally normal, but as one looked around the metal rims they would see a string of exceedingly small inscriptions. These inscriptions were, of course, runes and today the intermediate class would see firsthand just what runes were capable of in a magical sense. The older man hoped that such a twist to the memorization they'd been doing right before the break. So, standing at the front of the classroom toying with a pair of the glasses, Andrei waited.

Sasha wasn't really sure how she felt about Runes. This was one of the classes she couldn't understand basically anything. Her mind just didn't understand what was the point of all these different runes but she still decided to show up to this second lesson. She wasn't sure how much she will understand this time.

She was for this lesson in bit better mood already but this wasn't really yet true herself but at least she tried to be. She tried to hide all her sadness and hurt away as always. "Hello, Professor," she said with a small smile on her face. She really hoped she could somehow pass this lesson today.

She took a seat somewhere in the back row and looked at those glasses on her desk. She had no idea what they will do them. She was even afraid to touch them before they needed to do something with them. She didn't really wanna break them even before they start the glass. Also, Sasha wasn't really someone who uses glasses daily.

All she now needed was a wait to others to show up here. So they can start with this class and she hopes that it will be at least interesting for her. Also that she will learn from this lesson something.

As winter really hit Hogwarts, it was easier for Tess to truly take in the beauty that the castle truly was. While she still had not particularly warmed up to many people, she did feel a bit more in place at a place like this. As she had a tight blue peacoat that covered her uniform, she rushed up the stairs making sure to make all the necessary turns.

Her enthusiasm waned a little as she reached the final steps of the sixth floor. 'I should be exercising more' she thought amusedly. Keeping that in mind, she took a few heavy breaths before pushing the door open and smiling shyly at the professor. She was new in class, only just adding it to her schedule, and she wondered exactly what this class really was about. In Beauxbatons they concentrated in other aspects of magic, so this would be a nice change.

Taking a seat near the middle, Tess tilted her head when she saw a pair of glasses resting on her desk. They seemed like an unassuming object, but the quirkiness of the other professors made her realize that this was not a mundane item. Instead she waited patiently, hoping to learn to the best of her abilities.

Elenore had missed the first class of Ancient Runes, something she couldn't help but feel really bad for. Though, after finding out from one of the students who had gone, she hadn't missed too much. It did sound like it had been a fun class, though, so whilst Elenore hadn't missed much, she was sorry to have missed something of a more practical nature.

Making sure this time that she would not miss the class, Elenore moved up to the sixth floor a little earlier than was perhaps necessary to get to the class. She had entered the class just behind Tess -- something that increased her enthusiasm for this class -- but unlike her friend, Elenore turned to the professor as she entered, a warm smile on her lips. "Good morning, Professor Kessler."

With that done, Elenore moved to sit beside Tess. "Morning," She greeted the Slytherin witch as she made herself comfortable at her desk, before looking at the glasses on the desk before her. Elenore made no move to touch them -- she didn't wish to be in the Hospital Wing after all -- but she did note the small amount of inscriptions around the rims...

Deciding not to try to jump ahead, Elenore looked away from the glasses, wondering what they might be doing that day.

So far so good! The day had been going well for Janet and she almost skipped up the stairs and around the corners to her Ancient Runes classroom. While this class wasn't her very favorite, it was certainly in the top ten, and a class Janet always found herself looking forward to. Janet entered the room with an enthusiastic wave to the professor and an energetic "Good morning Professor Kessler".

She proceeded to sit in the front of the classroom and took from her bulging bag some parchment and a quill to take notes with. Next she turned her attention to the glasses, picking them up excitedly and examining them with a critical eye. She noted the runes around the rim with a small smile and squinted at them, trying to interpret them and find out what they could mean. She was able to recognize only a couple of them, since they were oh, so, very small but wrote down the ones she could decipher.

Clara had enjoyed the last Ancient Runes class. She was happy to be the first one to have figured out the puzzle. She knew from the start that she'd do well in this class, as she did in all her classes--she had high standards for herself, after all--but now she decided she looked forward to it specifically. It was an enjoyable subject: challenging enough to keep her stimulated, but not so difficult as to frustrate her.

They hadn't really gotten the chance to meet the professor last time, so she still wasn't sure what to expect, but she could deduce from the first activity that he enjoyed practical application of the subject, a fact that Clara appreciated. While all knowledge was good, the best knowledge was the kind that could actually be used to achieve a purpose.

She entered the classroom, and noticed that more people had shown up this time, some of whom she didn't recognize. Not that that was saying much--she didn't meet very many people--but she was sure she definitely hadn't seen one of them in the hallways in previous years. Maybe she was new.

Shrugging it off, she took a seat at a desk, and examined the glasses set before her. She didn't touch them--she was smart enough to know that you don't just touch things if you don't know what they do, especially when magic is involved. But she inspected them as closely as she could, her eyes scanning the runes around the rims.

Magical artifacts were incredibly fascinating. She hadn't studied them too much, so she was glad they were learning about them in class. The concept of imbuing an object with magic was something she would love to explore. In fact, the more she thought about it, the more she decided that would be an interesting field of study to undertake in her free time. With Ancient Runes, she decided it was probably like magical coding. Instead of numbers, a wizard could use runes to program an object to do something it wouldn't normally do.

The glasses, for instance, probably altered your vision in some way. It seemed like an obvious jump to make, considering the original purpose of the glasses. She was curious as to how, and exactly what they made you see, but she still refrained from touching them until instructed otherwise.

Avalon had always been intrigued by Ancient Runes, as it was a kind of history class on steroids. Artifacts fascinated him and, if he'd ever learned how to interpret olden languages, Avalon was sure that he'd be an expert by now. He hoped that taking this class would elevate his reading skills as well as his mind.

Walking into the classroom, the Ravenclaw noticed that there were glasses all throughout the room. He wondered if these would be what they were studying today. Were there inscriptions on the arms? It appeared as though there were.

"Interesting," he mused, finding himself drawn to a pair in the back. As he sat down, the boy realised that he'd forgotten to greet the professor. This level of rudeness was very much unlike him.

"Hello, professor," he smiled, waving from afar. Hopefully the man would forgive his rudeness. Avalon would hate to have a grudge held against him for waiting too late to say hello.

Ancient Runes was a topic that Alexei needed for the only fact that Curse Breaking required extensive knowledge of Runes and since Curse Breaking was a job that he wanted to do in the future, he had to take the subject during his NEWT years, his OWLs had been passed with O's all across the board and while he had flunked one year, Alexei was determined to actually head up a year and graduate with this batch of sixth years.

Slipping into the classroom, Alexei took in the students already seated before he slipped into an empty seat himself, his eyes zeroing in on the glasses that were just carelessly placed on the desk; his keen eyesight caught the minuscule runes around the rims and he rightfully theorized that they would be focusing on Magical artifacts for the day.

It was going to be, hopefully, another knowledgeable lesson that would give Alexei more of a chance to land his job as a Curse Breaker.

Andrei nodded curtly and tried his best to put on a friendly act as each student greeted him. He didn't hold it against any one of them, but he rather disliked the hum-drum formalities so often observed. The whole thing felt rather mechanical to the older man who had seen and more than heard his fair share of 'useless talk' or what most people would label as small talk. Sure, he understood people clung to such things in an attempt to impose some semblance of normality on life, but at the same time he also hated it and found it a waste of time.

Nonetheless, he returned each greeting best he could and when the last student filed in he ceased to fiddle with the glasses in his hand.

"Alright, as some of you might know today we will be looking at what cannot be seen." He always enjoyed leading with a paradox. "The glasses you have before you are the bread and butter of any self-respecting student of ancient runes. They allow you to look at a set of runes and see if they are laced with any magic."

He paused, removed his normal glasses, and put on the pair he had been playing with at the beginning of class.

"The ability to see traces of magic is, and I make no exaggeration when I say this, a matter of life and death. As an example, one need look no further than the rather unfortunate case of the group who first broke into the tomb of Tutankhamun. Certainly, they found their fortune and glory, but they also found a particularly nasty curse which accelerated aging. Long story short, it is ill-advised to venture into field work without the proper preparation."

He paused once more this time pulling his wand from within his robes and flicked it back in forth a few times as if he were conducting an unseen orchestra. In response to his efforts, a short string of runes appeared in the air in front of him. Looking as if they were made up of a brilliant white smoke, the runes remained in place even as a slight draft blew through the classroom.

Satisfied with his work, Andrei stepped out from behind the runes so they were to his left, put down his wand, and continued.

"If you've been doing your homework then you know that these runes are from the early Slavic period. And, well..." he shrugged and offered a lazy smile. "If you haven't been doing your homework you should still know this because we see a distinct lack of animal forms within this text. More to the point, this string of runes, in particular, is quite famous as they were used by Harthogun to create what we know today as his phantom army. I was fortunate enough to be on the excavation team of Harthogun's tomb and as we made our way into the burial chamber we found ourselves assailed by what appeared to be specters. Of course, we later discovered that they were essentially smoke given solid form through the use of runic texts. Thus, as you might expect, these runes roughly translate to 'solid smoke attack'. Not the most creative thing in the world, but effective nonetheless."

He was rambling, he knew he was rambling, but he was rambling to a point or at least he liked to think he was.

"Now, you are probably wondering why you aren't currently being attacked. Well, this is a result of a rather unique aspect of runic magic and that is the intention of the words you write. Unlike spoken word runic magic weighs heavily on what the caster's intentions are when weaving said runes—think of it as the 'tone' of a spell. The result is that this type of magic is incredibly easy to mess up if you are not disciplined in your thoughts and emotions. I mess up myself to this day."

"Luckily for you guys I will not task you with trying to imbue your own runes with magical intent today. Instead, I'd like all of you to put on your glasses," he motioned widely to the class. "We'll be working on tuning each of these so that when you look at this text you will see a slight yellow glow around it kind of like a magical highlighter."

He brought his hand up to the rim of the glasses and began moving it around the edge as if he were bringing a pair of binoculars into focus.

"Yes, I will admit it looks a bit silly, but this is how you go about tuning them. Move your hands around the rims until you start to see a yellow glow around the lettering," he once more gestured to the smoky runes hanging in the air. "If you have any questions or are having trouble I'll be making my way around the classroom. Best of luck."

And with that, the older teacher fell silent and began his rounds of the classroom taking special care to watch the way in which his students worked. He'd seen even experienced practitioners in the field get frustrated with the rather temperamental pieces of magical technology as they often jumped in and out of focus wildly. How his students approached such frustration would be interesting, to say the least.

PostSubject: Re: Intermediate Ancient Runes Lesson 2 [4th years+]   Intermediate Ancient Runes Lesson 2 [4th years+] EmptyWed Oct 25, 2017 6:16 am

When she sat down, Tess realized that Elenore was right behind her. She grinned brightly at the Hufflepuff who she now considered her closest friend at the castle. It was always nice to see a friendly face in a slightly scary place as this. When she was greeted with a good morning, Tess softly returned it. Soon the class began to fill with people and she wondered just how popular runes could be.

That thought vanished as soon as the Professor began. His lectures were full of wonder and history and she found herself leaning a bit forward taking as much in as possible. She had briefly read about the tomb of Tutankhamun through her brother; when he had returned from America he had come with a fondness for archeology. She had no clue how it had began but he had shoved the book of the beloved "King Tut" and she found it just as interesting.

It only grew in interest as the runes appeared from smoke. At first she had panicked wondering how quickly they would need to grasp the concept, but as he continued she realized that the real challenge did not lie in translating but rather in patience. Looking down at the glasses, she briefly wondered just how foolish she would look if she tried them on. Still the prospect of doing this correctly won over the social construct of adolescent embarrassment.

When she picked up the glasses, it was with great care, scared of something popping up only for her to seem even more foolish for being so skittish. Still, her hands caressed the edges, paying particular attention to the markings. She briefly caressed it as if she would a book before placing them on her face.

At first her nose wrinkled as the glasses hurt her eyes. This was not was she was expecting, but when he reminded them to turn the glasses to make it clearer, she delicately turned them only for them to grow worse. 'Wrong way!' she panicked. Again she tried towards the left only for one to slightly improve and the other to get worse off. She sighed. Leaving the left one alone her hands fiddled with the right. She closed her eyes briefly as her eyes cried out in pain.

'Are things ever easy?'

She rubbed her temples before delicately turning them again. She turned the left on to the right and the right lens to the left. It took around ten minutes before a light glow began to rise. Her eyes brightened and she continued to turn, but with less movement than before. At last it worked and she lightly clapped her hands together.

'Well that was certainly stressful' she thought.
