A Day in the Life (Kam)

His morning had started simple enough; he had come in at seven in the morning and he had immediately began to work n the new oppositions to statutes that were coming in. Letters after letters were coming in because of the summit that was soon to commence. He did not know exactly what to do, but for the sake of being a good junior politician he began to read them.

The whole summit itself did open a lot of wounds for people, wounds that were not properly healed through the two years. His father had grown angry the moment he had heard that the statute was being debated. He had sent lobbyists in protest and had sent a letter to the Clement family wondering what they thought. In turn Mycroft simply promised his father he would try to get as much knowledge as the public could get, and keep him posted.

Soon the afternoon turned to a shit show with protests outside by families and people demanding an answer as to Britain's position. He refused to go outside and instead was called into the Minister's office, much to his surprise.

So here he was, after half a day trapped in the office, he was now waiting for the Minister wondering if he did something wrong or if he had a plan that would give Mycroft another responsibility.

The ICWW was fast approaching, and the pressures of the work that the Ministry of Magic was facing were growing infinitely as each day passed. Kamren had been having to deal with the press trying to get his stance on the ICWW and the way in which the Ministry would be voting. As if anyone needed to ask what they would be doing, the Statute kept the wizarding world safe, and anyone who wanted to abandon that safety... well, they were definitely people Kamren needed to try and sway at the Summit.

Clarinda had been worrying over him, trying to get him to relax as much as possible, to leave work a little easier, because the Healer could see her husband's stress levels were very high. She'd urged him -- and Kamren admitted she was right in this area -- to bring on a second. Someone whom he trusted to see through the Summit in the same way as him, should he be taken ill.

That had been precisely why he'd sent word to Mycroft Holmes to meet him in his office that afternoon. The man was of both French and English background. Kamren had to admit that he did not trust Mycroft one hundred percent -- what with the uncertainty coming from France on their stance of the Statute -- but Mycroft would be an asset on either side of the water, whether the young man realised it or not.

Kamren's secretary knocked -- the young man had been with Kamren for the last six months now, and was very much worth his wage -- before peeking his head around the door. "Mr Holmes is here to see you, Minister."

"Send him in, please, Jack." Kamren replied, putting the file that contained their press release to the side. "And, coffee would be nice, too." Kamren added, and Jack nodded, opening the door to admit Mycroft Holmes, before he hurried off to get some coffee for the two of them. Standing on the sight of Mycroft Holmes, Kamren held out his hand to the man once he'd neared his desk, and then motioned to the seat opposite him.

"Thank you, for coming at such short notice." Kamren said, seating himself again with a soft sigh that came with his age. "But, I think we can both agree the Ministry has shied away from the inevitable long enough now." Kamren added, letting the small piece of information sink in so that Mycroft could quickly be on board with where this conversation was going. But, also because he could see Jack coming back already through the glass of the office.

Kamren waited for the tray to be situated, before taking his own cup and placing it on his desk before him. Boiling hot coffee was not something the Minister liked, and he would wait for it to grow tepid first.

Instead, his attention turned back to Mycroft a moment after the door to the office had closed. The young man was doing well for himself. The papers Kamren got from the Holmes' heir were of impeccable quality, and Kamren knew that the younger man was destined for great things.

"I want to know your personal stance on the Summit, if I may." Kamren explained, not playing around the point of this meeting. They had business to get on to, but first Kamren had to know that Mycroft was on the right side.

As he awaited the proper permission to go to see the Minister he pondered the reasons behind it. He went over the possible options; his first thought was that he simply needed to get some things for his signature; he knew that the official statement of the UK would be needed very soon, so he had gone out of his way to properly write something that would be best suited to placate both the pureblood families and the other bloods. He knew that many purebloods were a bit worried over the idea that a halfblood was representing the British families in something that would sway against their powers. He himself had face some scoffs as he had began to work beneath the man; but to be perfectly honest, despite his parentage, the man worked hard and it was admirable to see him work so hard. It was a lot different from his father who was more of a lobbyist than actually taking a stand.

It was this that he mulled over when he was called into the office of his superior. He smiled politely at the assistant and he moved towards the Minister, shaking his hand firmly. He waited to be signaled to be sit down and once he did, he sat down. His posture seemed relaxed, yet his back was perfectly straight, the typical aristocratic position waiting for the conversation to go straight to the point. While his style was not to be so direct, there was no need for smalltalk for things such as politics.

So as the coffees came and the privacy was properly created, he waited patiently for the conversation to begin. It was from the first phrase that Mycroft realized where this was going and he felt a bit nervous if he was perfectly honest. Still, he found himself picking up the hot coffee and taking a long sip. He sighed allowing the heat to trail down before paying attention to the conversation at hand. The Summit brought the sore spot for many pureblood families he had a horrible thought as soon as he realized that there would be no small talk- did his father send a letter to the minister to push for his stance? The thought itself horrified him, that is until he logically pushed that thought away; his father was not so tactless.

Still the question was a hard one to fully respond. He made eye contact to the Minister and wondered if the older man wanted a real response or if he wanted a nice bit size response. He was good at pinpointing what was needed but at this point he figured 'In for a penny, out for a pound'

"If I may be perfectly honest sir, I do not know what you want me to say. And by that what I mean to say is that if you want to hear the politically correct answer that I should give, or the response that my heritage and family would prefer me to respond. So before I truly unravel the point of this conversation I'd like to know...just how honest are we being here?"

Politics was a messy subject and he would not fall so quickly in what could possibly be a trap. While he again thought highly of the man, he would not be so trusting of anyone. It was simply his way to be.

Kamren watched Mycroft with interest. He was not, by any means, the most perfect of body language readers, but he could pick up enough. Mycroft was not at ease in the office he currently sat, and many other Ministers might have been happy with the aura around them being one of fear, but Kamren was not that kind of man. He expected results, yes, but he was not the kind of man who got results through fear.

Mycroft's opted answer, however, was one that Kamren couldn't help but smile at. The Holmes heir was trying to be clever, Kamren deduced from his lack of answer, in that he was trying to show he knew that there was a 'right' answer to the question Kamren had just post. In all honesty, though, Mycroft was wrong in that assumption, Kamren had asked the question of the young man to be sure of what he was about to commit to.

"You misunderstood me, Mycroft -- might I call you Mycroft?" Kamren asked, though he didn't wait for an answer before he carried on, his tone soft and hopefully showing that this was not a firm political meeting where the answer had to be 'right'.

"As I said before, I would like your personal stance on the Statute. Not the one the Ministry expects of you, nor what your family expects you to follow. I'm asking you what you believe is the right way forward with the Statute." Kamren explained, because all Mycroft had just told him was that he would stand by an opinion that was not solely his own.

Something that could be problematic to Kamren's plans.

Mycroft stared intently at the Minister not too sure what to make of him. Was Kamren a good man? At the surface level and what he surmised, the answer was simply yes. The man had good intentions, at least that's what Mycroft saw during the daily grind of the workplace. He had joined the ministry work during the midst of the plague that had hit many witches and wizard and saw the Minister's unwavering hopeful nature at it's work. The man was good, but as a Holmes, trusting few was the norm.

It was clear the man was not fond of the vague answer and then framed it to truly show Mycroft's colors. And as much as he tried he knew that his opinion was needed for this conversation to actually move forward.

"Very well..."he began. "While I am not fond of sharing my personal opinion...and it can be uncouth to do so, I must admit that my opinion is very much mixed. My initial response was one of horror as were many families. My family is old...we hold strong in our convictions and tradition, so for me to not take that into consideration is impossible. To be perfectly frank" he took a deep breath, "I am not fond of the change in statute due to the danger that can come to it. I do not want our society to be forced to integrate to a Muggle one that had done a massive genocide throughout the Middle Ages and into the New World. I lost family...we...we lost strong blood during those times."

And they definitely had. He remembered the tales that her grandmere rambled on, drilling the history of their family through their mantel. The fear was evident. While halfbloods and muggleborns were perhaps part of Muggle society already, the idea of families...of his sister being thrown into the world worried him. After a short pause he continued briefly looking directly at the Minister before continuing.

"I know some of our brethren are for the integration. They see it as a chance to grow in power." his eyes gleamed. "I know that we were once part of the aristocracy and spent out leisure dealing with the royals. But that's not the case now. That world...is chaotic. The world wants wars, warns of wars, constantly in a never-ending arms race and the thought of them realizing something such as magic exists...who is to say that they won't try to use them as weapons. To destroy the long tradition and climate that we have within out society?"

Had her said too much? Perhaps, but when nervous he found himself saying more than need be. "And if disappoints you sir, or changes your perspective of me I do apologize. But I have family to think over...I cannot fathom having a younger generation so sheltered to be thrusted to that world so unprepared."

Kamren knew very well that he was pushing the younger man's buttons in asking for Mycroft's personal opinion, but this was important. There was no use in asking the younger man to be his second if Mycroft was going to undo absolutely everything he was working towards with one wrong word.

So, as Mycroft opened up with his opinion, which, though he tried to say was mixed, Kamren could see the young man was more favourable towards the Statute remaining as it was. The Minister couldn't help the small smile that touched his lips as Mycroft finished up, denoting an apology if Kamren did not agree with the ideas that Mycroft had presented.

"Thank you," Kamren said first when the younger man had finished his explanation. "For your honesty. I believe our honesty in this situation is going to be important, if we want to move forwards together." He added, keeping his tone quite calm in that moment, despite the fact his heart was racing just a little bit faster than it needed to.

"I'm very much like yourself, Mycroft. We can both see that there is no perfect outcome from the Summit. Keeping the Statute in place will keep things comfortable. But, it's not progressive. Throwing it away over night, however, would put the younger generations at great risk, and Merlin knows what else." Kamren continued, showing that it was okay not to know fully of the outcome.

"Now that I know I can trust you not to be irrational," Kamren continued, though he'd never believed the Holmes' heir to be so and that showed in his tone. "I wish to propose you come with me as my second to the Summit. Many of the delegates will likely be bringing their wives and, or, children. I don't believe this is the right way to do it. The Cayman Islands are not exactly known for being safe, but I trust you won't mind a little bit of adventure."

A pause, and Kamren considered for one last time.

"I plan to vote for keeping the Statute in place. For now, until we -- all of the delegates -- can come up with a more long term solution for the integration of magic in to the Muggle world." Kamren finally told Mycroft, making him the second person in the world to hear it from Kamren's lips. "And, I plan to take you with me, to enhance your grasp on International Politics."

It would be left unsaid that Kamren was shaping the younger man for his job in the future, but the hint would be there. Quite clearly there.

Mycroft was a man who was not known to speak too much; in fact he was blamed for being too quiet. But this was not out of meekness of shyness, but rather observing. Every action at every turn could result in a different outcome and despite the probabilities, it was daunting to say the least. Still, looking at the older man in front of him, he felt like he had possibly admitted more than he should have.

A foreign feeling of dread arose feeling foolish for being so honest with the man before him, but the idea of having his sister fall into such a dangerous world had made him simply express himself with his displeasure. As he was thanked, he tried not to look confused; very much showing just how young he was. But as the Minister continued, more and more, it was clear that this was much more than he expected.

His surprise was clear on his face before his eyes brightened at the opportunity that was coming his way. He never expected to be noticed so quickly and to be even trusted. Taking a deep breath, he looked directly at the Minister.

"Sir, I-I thank you very much for his opportunity. I am glad that we are both on the same position and I can only hope that I don't disappoint you."

Kamren waited for Mycroft's reaction to the news he'd been selected to help him on the International Summit. Whilst Mycroft would not be standing up for the speeches, or in any way leading at the Summit, it would do the younger man a great deal of help to see how these things worked. To shadow Kamren through the whole ordeal, and when they were dismissed for tea, lunch and dinner, Mycroft could mingle with the other delegates and make connections.

Connections, after all, were key.

The surprise that grew on Mycroft's face -- momentarily, but clear enough for Kamren who was known for watching such things -- the older man couldn't help the smile that formed on his lips. It was good to see the younger man had not expected to be given this opportunity, the boy is grounded, at least, Kamren thought to himself.

"I'm quite sure you won't disappoint me, Mr Holmes. Now, I suggest you get to prepping. I would like you well versed on the Statute before we depart. I'll make the necessary arrangements for our trip." Kamren explained. "If you wouldn't mind sending my secretary back in on your way out, I'll forward all details, and my requirements to you shortly."

With that, the Minister waited for Mycroft to vacate, there was no need to oversell the importance of their work in the coming months.

When he was a child, he dreamed of being in a position of power. Not for his name, or his breeding, but rather his work. It seemed like a silly thing, for a young boy born into power to properly work, but he wanted to. To work, to strive, to move from his families' power and into his own. And the Minister himself was giving his opportunity.

He knew he looked a bit foolish as he shook the Minister's hand and thanked him profusely. As he walked off, he felt like this was all surreal. He wanted to call his father and inform him of the news, he wanted to pull Tess from school and inform him. He wanted to let them know that this was the first step to his success.

But instead what he did was sat down and continued to work. He worked through the law and motion calendar, worked through some edits and knew that he would soon be leaving. He didn't ask for much but things were truly looking up.
