Janet bit her lip as she wrote, erased, wrote, erased, over and over. She huffed and dropped the pencil and paper to the table, leaning back in her seat and running a hand through her hair.

Why?! Why were the words not slowing as usual? She sighed and leaned over the small journal, picking the pencil back again and doodling in the margins of the paper. She usually had no problems with her book and yet this specific chapter just seemed... stuck. She couldn't make it past the first little part and even that just didn't work how she wanted.

She groans and rips the whole page out, glad nothing is on the back and crumples it up, discarding it on the table in front of her and grabbing a chip, looking around the crowded pub with a sigh. She tapped the eraser on the notebook and stared at the table in front of her, willing the inspiration to come. Writer's block is the worst.

Humming softly, she found herself strolling through Hogsmeade. Her father had allowed her an outing due to a business that would happen in the home and she had tested his patience to be allowed an outing. There were moments where his indifference was convenient and this was one of them. In two weeks time she would go back to Paris and she could feel herself coming back to life at the thought.

She missed her home. She missed her grandmere, she missed simply being free even if it was under another's supervision. Thus, she figured it would be best to simply go through Hogsmeade, buy a few books for entertainment and beginning the tedious packing. Her maid had warned her not to buy too much but as usual she would never listen.

Her eyes lead her to the Three Broomsticks and she briefly looked around. She knew she shouldn't have spent her time there especially unaccompanied, but the thought of doing it was...daring. She smile a bit before deciding that Butterbeer would do no harm.

Walking in, she wrinkled her nose at the smoky feel of the room, but as all the tables looked full, she saw a familiar face. As politely as she could, she coughed hoping to get the other girl's attention.

"Would you mind if I sat here?"

Janet was soon lost in thought, thinking of, and imagining the world of her book and watching it fold out like a movie in her head. She knew exactly where she wanted the book to go. She knew the plot of the beginning and the middle and the end, she just didn't know how to get it there. She knew what she was moving towards in this chapter, but getting there without the whole thing sounding stiff and awkward was a whole different thing.

Janet was in the middle of thinking and doodling on the side of the page when someone cleared their throat. She jumped and almost knocked over her butterbeer in her surprise, reaching out quickly to steady it before it could tip and spill everywhere. She looked up at the girl in front of her with wide eyes.

"Tess! Hi, of course, you can sit here!" She closed her journal and tucked her pencil in to keep her spot, plopping it on the floor beside her and smiling, moving the chips to the middle of the table to make room for the girl.

At the clumsy actions of the witch beside her, Tess immediately felt bad for causing such a ruckus. Janet was still so kind as to allow her to sit. With a murmur of apology Tess did just that and sat down carefully, hoping her father would not notice the smell that might linger on her clothes. It was a bit unseemly to be in a location such as this but she did not mind. She quite liked the idea of being a bit daring and going someplace without her father's supervision.

Instead she put her shopping bags at the chair beside her and smiled politely to Janet before the waiter came to ask for her order. A simple water and butterbeer would do for now she supposed.

"If I may ask, what were you working on? I hope I wasn't interrupting something too important. Summer work perhaps?" she inquired.

Janet waved away the apology with a slightly sheepish smile. "Oh, please. You're fine, it was my fault, it's nice to see you again." Janet smiled at the waitress and then back at Tess before scooting the chips towards her some. "Feel free to have some, Merlin knows I can't eat them all by myself, though alone I'm sure I would try." She chuckled and took a sip of her drink, partly to shut herself up.

As the other girl asked what she was working on Janet gave her a small smile. "Oh, no. Not school work, I've already finished the stuff I was supposed to do over the summer, and no, nothing that can't wait. Some waiting might do me some good in fact. I was doing some writing for my book but it seems I'm stuck at the moment." She sighed and lifted a shoulder in a half shrug. "The struggles of an author."

Janet's politeness and offering of her chips made Tess smile politely. She couldn't eat it, her father had brought her dress that already was a bit tighter than she admitted. (And if she was perfectly honest, Hogwarts and their starchy food had already changed her weight. She blamed the bread if she was perfectly fair, it was too fluffy.). So instead she wasted her calories on the butterbeer. As it was served, she took a sip and hummed softly allowing herself the pleasure of the taste.

Her interest was peaked at the mention of writing. It was a good hobby to have and Tess herself wrote if only in her journal. Her father was not fond of her 'wasting' her time on writing when she could be learning 'better' hobbies such as sewing, singing and child care. Such foolish misogyny that she refused to admonish.

"What do you write?" she asked curiously.

Janet smiled, excited to talk about her book. "It's a science fiction book. It's about a princess from another planet whose parents died when she was really little. She grew up with her aunt, who she recently found out was planning on finding a way to keep the title of queen. The whole book is about the princess escaping the castle and living in the nearby forest, and finding a way to get back her crown." She rubbed the back of her neck and grinned sheepishly. "Er, sorry. You totally didn't ask about the whole thing, but.." She trailed off, knowing better than to start an apology ramble.

"What about you? Do you have any hobbies or anything? I honestly need to think about anything but my book at the moment, obviously focusing on it is getting me nowhere." She chuckled and grabbed a chip, listening to the other girl with a smile.

As Tess listened about her book, she tilted her head in confusion. Science Fiction? She assumed that was a genre of it's own, but very different from something she had ever heard. But as she continued about princess and the classic trope, she realized it was a type of fantasy except with planets. Maybe it was a muggle thing she did not understand.

"Science Fiction..." she mulled over the word. "This is about stars and planets? We don't have that here." signaling her word.

As Janet mentioned hobbies, Tess smiled shyly.

"Well, here I mostly write poetry. But father says that good hobbies I should have are are sewing, singing, dancing and gardening. I am fond of the singing" she laughed slightly. "But having hobbies are a necessity for my family."

It never occurred to her that this was not something 'normal' for people, but for her it was. Her family dictated what she did and when she did it.

Janet tilted her head. "Ah, well in that case that's something I can bring here. I suppose it may be more of a muggle concept, but it's what I'm writing nonetheless." She smiled and thought of her plot. Yes it was more of a book that would be common in the muggle world but Janet read books from the muggles and from wizards, sometimes it was hard to keep track of whcih concepts were found where.

"I love poetry! That's so cool." She nodded as she listened further. "I feel like hobbies are a necessity for everyone, at least in order to be well rounded, but that's just my opinion I suppose. What do you write poetry about?" She played with her drink, trailing her fingers over the sides, creating patterns in the percipitation before she glanced up to look at the other girl as she talked.

Tess smiled, still a bit confused about the science fiction genre, but glad that Janet had a new purpose of bringing a different custom in the magical world. It was probably her upbringing that failed to express the fact she had little knowledge of the world beyond her pureblood roots. And while she was scared of even inquiring about it, she did have a thought or so about how that world was, and if it was a dangerous as her father had once told her.

"I'd like to read it, once you are done" she winked.

Though at the girl's enthusiasm in poetry, she blushed a bit embarrassed that someone either genuinely cared, or was being awfully polite. Poetry was for the weak heart and while she did enjoy writing, she would never show it to anyone. To show someone about a love that can never be? Insipid crushes that can never grow? The yearning to explore the world and truly being free? This was far too out of character for the people that did not know her that well.

"I write about...nature, mostly about water. My family...we are all connected with the water. It's actually thought that the reason that when sorted, the element is always water."
